Wednesday, October 8Jennifer Ceska, Conservation CoordinatorState Botanical Garden of GeorgiaThe Rock House5:00 p.m. Cocktails5:30 p.m. Program$5.00 per personReservations begin September 8

A walk anywhere in Georgia is a walk through biodiversity. We

have a dizzying array of species here, the most diverse of any state this side of the Mississippi. From mountains to seashore, from sun-seared granite outcrops to lazy rivers, Georgia has it all. And while we can celebrate the beauty of Georgia’s great outdoors, there are people across our state working to make sure that this natural heritage remains for future generations.

Meet Conservation Coordinator Jennifer Ceska for “Postcards from the Field” and learn about the great work going on in plant conservation at the State

Botanical Garden and elsewhere. Jennifer is the coordinator of the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance, a network of conservation organizations actively working to save rare plants. Winner of a national award in 2013, the GPCA is regarded throughout the continent as ‘the’ program to emulate.

Jennifer will bring specimens of endangered species that

you can hold in your own hands and take you on some visual and exciting journeys from her work in plant conservation.

Jennifer received a Master’s of Science degree from the

University of Georgia in the early ‘90s, the 1994 Beattie Fellowship from the Garden Club of America and the 2000

Professional Citation from the American Public Gardens Association for her contributions to plant conservation in the United States. Dynamic, animated, and inspiring, Jennifer will educate and entertain you; and who knows? Maybe she’ll sign you up as a botanical guardian! For more information on Jennifer Ceska and the State Botanical Garden please visit their website at www.botgarden.uga.edu.

Monarchs in a Changing WorldBiology and Conservation of an Iconic Butterfly

Lecture & Discussion

‘If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies.’ Author unknown

Thursday, October 9Dr. Sonia AltizerUGA Odum School of EcologyThe Rock House5:00 p.m. Cocktails5:30 p.m. Program$5.00 per personReservations begin September 9

Monarchs are arguably the most popular

insect species in the world and are an icon for conservation groups and environmental education programs. Both monarch caterpillars and adults are easily recognizable as welcome visitors to gardens. Monarchs are well known for their spectacular migration in eastern North America, which has captured the imagination of the public. Monarchs also face growing threats from humans as they navigate a changing landscape marked by deforestation, pesticides, genetically-modified crops, and a changing climate, all

of which place the future of monarchs and their amazing migration in peril. This lecture will share some of the most exciting new discoveries on

monarch migration, and take the audience on a virtual journey to the monarchs’ magical overwintering sites in central

Mexico. We will also discuss active conservation efforts to ensure that monarch populations persist into future

generations. Dr. Altizer is a population ecologist whose research focuses on animal migration,

monarch butterfly ecology, and animal-pathogen interactions.

Cézanne and the ModernMasterpieces of European Art from the Pearlman Collection

Lecture & Discussion

Monday, October 13 Julia ForbesHead of Museum Interpretation and Digital EngagementHigh Museum of Art, AtlantaThe Rock House5:00 p.m. Cocktails5:30 p.m. Program$5.00 per personReservations begin September 13

Cézanne and the Modern showcases the extraordinary vision of Henry

Pearlman (1895–1974), a modest American entrepreneur who amassed an astonishing collection of modern art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including perhaps the greatest collection of watercolors by Cézanne outside of France. Julia Forbes will bring this astonishing collection to life through an illustrated lecture. This exhibition, on view at the High Museum October 25, 2014-January 11, 2015, marks the first international tour of the entire collection since Pearlman’s death in 1974.

The talk will offer highlights of the more than 50 masterworks which include Manet, Pissarro, Degas, Gauguin, van Gogh, Soutine, and Modigliani. Forbes

will focus on the group of twenty-four oil paintings and watercolors by Paul Cézanne, an artist whose work bridged the two worlds of the Impressionists and modernists, and continues to be celebrated and admired for its innovation, rigor, and beauty. For more information on the High Museum, please visit their website at www.high.org.

Voting With Your Feet in GeorgiaState & Local Taxes and Government Spending

Lecture & Discussion

Thursday, October 23Deborah A. Carroll, Ph.D.Department of Public Administration and PolicyUGA School of Public & International Affairs (SPIA)The Rock House5:00 p.m. Cocktails5:30 p.m. Program$5.00 per personReservations begin September 23

A scholar by the name of Charles Tiebout proposed a theory in 1956 in which

he argued that households are mobile and individuals will choose communities with levels of taxation and spending for public services that best satisfy their preferences – as Tiebout described, people “vote with their feet.” As a result, state and local governments, rather than the federal government, are better adept at meeting the needs of their unique constituent populations. Although the Tiebout hypothesis has been the subject of much criticism over the years, it helps to explain and describe the trends and significant variation in state and local public finance we see all around. So, what do individuals’ feet say in Georgia? Dr. Carroll will discuss the context of taxes and government spending in Georgia, particularly compared to the broader fiscal climate of the United States.

Dr. Carroll is an Associate Professor, Graduate Coordinator, and Director of the Master’s in Public Administration Program at the University of

Georgia. She teaches graduate courses in government and nonprofit finance, state and local taxation, and economic development. Dr. Carroll’s research focuses on: 1) financial management and fiscal policy issues of state and local governments, particularly related to taxation, revenue diversification, and urban economic development; and 2) the interconnectedness of the public and nonprofit sectors and the implications for tax policy, tax burden, and public service provision. For additional information, please visit the Department of Public Administration and Policy’s website: http://padp.uga.edu/.

Linger Longer Living welcomes back Pittsburgh Symphony violinist Christopher Wu, who returns after a highly successful, sold-out performance at The Sandy

Creek Barn last year. This year, Chris brings his good friend guitarist Tom Jones to perform music from Bach to Broadway.

After a wonderful dinner, sit back, relax, and listen to the sweet sounds of strings. Christopher and Tom perform Amazing Grace, Girl from Ipanema, I

Could Have Danced All Night, Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and many others in a night of music spanning four centuries. Performing on a Nicolo Gagliano violin from 1727 and a 20th century Taylor guitar, the duo will play and share stories that bring new meaning to these familiar pieces.

Described by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review as a musician of “virtuoso command with depth of musical understanding,” Christopher Wu has enjoyed

a diverse career as an orchestral and chamber musician, teacher, and soloist. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Mr. Wu has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Nancy Wilson, Mandisa, Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, and Emanuel Ax. Christopher is a 25+ year member of the Pittsburgh Symphony and has played for Pope John Paul II, President Obama, and other world leaders at the G-20.

Thomas Jones is the owner of JW Jones Inc., a Manufacturer’s Representative Sales Agency in

Pittsburgh. Tom began studying guitar at age 7, and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has toured nationally and internationally with various music groups throughout the years and has recorded with several local artists.

Seventy Five Years in the Garden Historical Memoriam to Georgia’s First Garden Club

Lecture & Discussion

Thursday, November 20 Maureen O’BrianCurator & Horticulturalist, Founders Memorial GardenUGA College of Environment & DesignThe Rock House5:00 p.m. Cocktails5:30 p.m. Program$5.00 per personReservations begin October 20

The Founders Memorial Garden commemorates the twelve founders

of the first American Garden Club, the Ladies Garden Club of Athens, which was founded in 1891. With funds raised by the Garden Club of Georgia, Dean Hubert B. Owens, his staff, and students of the Landscape Architecture Department began designing the garden in 1936; the project was completed in 1946. The layout of the two and one-half acre series of gardens, the grounds of the former Headquarters House for the Garden Club of Georgia, consists of a formal boxwood garden, two courtyards, a terrace, and a perennial garden as well as two informal areas surrounding a rose-brick, Greek Revival Style Antebellum home; the house and garden are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Maureen O’Brien serves as curator and horticulturalist at the Founders Memorial Garden as well as a part-time instructor and lecturer within the

College of Environment and Design. She will present a chronological history of the garden and the national and international contributions it has made to advance the discipline of Landscape Architecture and the preservation of historic properties and rare plant species. To learn more about the location of the Founders Memorial Garden please visit http://gardenclub.uga.edu/foundersgarden.html.

English Proverb

“from little acorns mighty oaks do grow”An old English proverb –“from little acorns mighty oaks do grow”– reminds us that little seeds mature into mighty generations. Similarly, our knowledge and intellect are strengthened by the seeds of cultural experience. At Reynolds Plantation, we have chosen the acorn to represent the seeds of our cultural experience. The acorn is the fruit of Georgia’s state tree, the Live Oak, and offers much symbolism as we prepare an exciting series of programs to entertain and enlighten you. The Linger Longer Living cultural lifestyle programs combine the best of visual and performing arts (including exhibitions, music, lectures, excursions and instruction) with a uniquely diverse audience to create an unparalleled cultural experience for the South’s Premier Golfing and Lakeside Destination. Grow wise and experience this season of Living.

Join us for an educational and entertaining experience with the Linger Longer Living series. To register for these events, please contact the Member Concierge at 706.467.1111.
