From the Principal... Homecoming 2018 at KHS is almost here. The students and staff are gearing up for an exciting and memorable week. Between the float building, spirit assemblies, dress up days, and the parade—there is something for everyone to do to get into the Kearsley spirit. Don’t forget the big game on Friday, October 5th against the Dragons from Swartz Creek. The theme for this year is “Marvels”. Each class has a character that will be depicted on their class float as well as in a designated hall- way in the high school. ALL STUDENTS are encouraged to get in- volved. It’s not easy pulling off a Homecoming Parade and all that goes in to making it successful in such a short time frame. Students should see one of their class officers or sponsors for details and directions on how they can help complete their float. This is always a great way to meet fellow classmates and spend quality time together outside the school setting. Float building after school and during the evenings is always supervised by a staff member and food is usually provided. Each day during Homecoming week, students can get involved in a variety of activities. These exciting activities kick off on Monday with a fun and entertaining Spirit Assembly at 1:00 p.m. put on by our Stu- dent Council. On Monday night, the girls start the battle for the Powder Puff title, with the Juniors vs. the Freshmen at 5:30 p.m. and the Seniors vs. the Sophomores at 7:00 p.m.. The Powderpuff King will be crowned between the games. Tickets are $5.00 per person. This is a senior class fundraiser so passes will not be accepted. On Wednesday afternoon, the winners from Monday night’s games will play for the title at 1:00 p.m. Cost for this fundraiser is a $2.00 donation to Kearsley Christmas Chari- ties. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night, float building occurs at student homes for all classes (maps are available in the main office). On Friday, the action lasts all day long. Our Queen’s Court As- sembly starts at 1:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. The Homecoming Parade starts at 5:00 p.m. and travels from Paro Educational Center down Gene- see Road to Daly Boulevard, ending at the high school. The football game begins at 7:00 p.m. with the new Queen to be announced at half- time. Once again our Board of Education and administration are hosting a Tailgate Party at the conclusion of the parade in the high school cafeteria. Stop in and grab a variety of “MARVEL ous” treats from around the world. For the cost of $5 you can eat from any or all of the different stations—all proceeds from the tailgate will go to Kearsley Christmas Charities. Live Grades and

Homework on

ParentVue

As the excitement of Homecoming ar-

rives, keeping students focused on their aca-

demics is undoubtedly a challenge for our

teachers and for you. It is vitally important

that you as a parent keep in touch with your

child’s teachers and stay up on their progress

in all courses. You can do this by using

ParentVue in our Synergy System. This can

be found on our website under the Parents

tab. I truly believe that if you show an inter-

est in your child’s education, and they know

you are checking on them, they will do better

in the long run. Working together and keep-

ing open lines of communication will ensure

that your child receives the best education

possible at KHS. We are now in our fourth

week of school, Please check your child’s

grades daily!

Kearsley High School Policy Changes

At KHS, we have been hard at work over

the past few years developing comprehensive final

exams that align to all the state course content ex-

pectations. We believe that students who can earn

at least a “C+” on these comprehensive final exams

have demonstrated that they have a satisfactory

grasp of the content covered in the course.

Students are allowed nine (9) absences per

semester, excused or unexcused.

Should a student reach ten (10) or eleven

(11) absences in a class, he or she will be

required to attend one or both of the Sat-

urday School sessions scheduled late in

the semester to make up hours.

If a student fails to “lower” his or her ab-

sence total to 9, the student will be re-

quired to earn a minimum of a “C+” on his

or her final exams to have his/her grade

calculated for the semester. If the student

does not attain a “C+” grade on the final

exam, the student will receive a “WF”

(Withdraw Failing) for the course.

Due in part to the state course content ex-

pectations, Kearsley High School has altered its

attendance policy to help improve upon student

attendance. Tardies will count in the overall at-

tendance count. Every three tardies that are accu-

mulated in any one class will be converted into an

absence. This tardy will appear as an ABT on the

attendance recorded found in both StudentVue and

ParentVue.

Tardies count in the overall attendance

record– 3 tardies = 1 ABT.

MAKE-UP WORK We are expecting students to be responsi-

ble for making contact with the teachers to

acquire missing assignments and homework. As

stated in the Code of Conduct. “It is the student’s responsibility to contact his/her teachers . . to secure assignments missed during an absence.”

Contact can be made through:

E-mail (see the attached e-mail list)

Phone (see the attached phone list)

ParentVue/StudentVue (you can e-mail

directly from here)

Face to face contact upon the student’s return

Students will be expected to:

Maintain a reasonable standard of wearing

apparel appropriate to the learning environment

and in keeping with standards of health and hy-

giene. (ex: clothes that have not been washed, no

pajamas allowed, bare feet are not allowed, no hats/

headwear or sunglasses are to be carried around or

worn during school hours. No coats are allowed in

classrooms, and no blankets are allowed during

school hours.)

Avoid dress and grooming which is distract-

ing, disruptive or sexually explicit. For example: no

bare midriff, girls’ tops to have straps of a minimum

of two inches in width, no excessive skin showing

(cleavage, lower back/bottom, etc.), no pants too

tight (example: stretch or yoga pants) or dresses/

skirts/shorts too short, avoid shirts too loose or tops

that do not meet the bottom, pajamas, slippers, etc.

No clothing which glamorizes illegal or inap-

propriate behavior. (ex: sexual innuendo, tobacco/

alcohol/drugs)

DANCE POLICY The attendance policy, in conjunction with the

Dance Policy, will help students improve upon

their attendance. The Dance Policy states that stu-

dents who go over their allowed absences(9) or re-

ceive a level 5 discipline referral or higher, will not

be allowed to attend any high school dance during

the next semester at Kearsley High School. Other

high schools in the county have implemented

similar policies with great results.

The Kearsley School District will continue to award Positive Behavior Support

(PBS) in 2018-19. PBS is a great way to teach kids our expectations for behav-

ior and to reinforce the positive behaviors we see. Too often, we spend most of

our efforts correcting the poor behaviors of a small minority of the students in-

stead of rewarding and celebrating all the good things the majority of our kids

do daily. In addition to the “three R’s” being posted around the school, we at

KHS have initiated the PBS Student of the Month, and offer students quarterly

incentives.

JD School Pictures will be back on

Tuesday, October 9th

7:45am-10:30am

to take pictures of any students who

missed getting their pictures taken or students

who are unhappy with their original photos.

You must return your picture packet at

time of retake to avoid being charged.

Call JD School Pictures if you have any questions

Students who took Drivers Ed In June/July need to attend the SEGMENT TWO classes in November. Classes are on Saturday, November 4, 11, and 18th. Students should attend the same class time as their summer class, either 7-9am or 9-11 am.

Final Exam Schedule

for this year’s Graduates

In past years, the schedule for Seniors has

required them to attend class up to and including

the last Friday in May. In recent years, it was decided to change the

schedule, making the Senior’s last regular day Friday, May 17,

and requiring them to take final exams on Monday, May 20 and

Tuesday, May 21.

Students will then return on Friday, May 24th to pick up their

graduation caps, gowns, and tickets for the Commencement

ceremony.
