DESCRIPTION

The official October Newsletter for Division 6 Key Club!

Citation preview

Hey Division 6, I hope school is going well for everyone so far! All Key Clubs should’ve had their first meeting by now, and I hope that some of you have even attended your first event! If your club has gotten off to a slow start, and you’re not exactly sure how you can get involved, remember that October offers a lot of different service opportunities! Check and see if any walks or food drives are being held in your area, or you can try and organize your own! You can also try and contact your local Parks Department and see if they need a group of young volunteers to cleanup an area in your community. If you ever have an idea for an event, but no one in your club seems to be listening, don’t hesitate to contact me and I can try my best to make your idea a reality! I hope that everyone who attended Fall Rally on October 14

th

received a lot of new ideas on how to make their club better. Fall Rally was informative, fun, and filled with

service, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of LTG Alex Janello, LTG Jason Roman, LTG Sean Charles, DPG Rickie Santer, Eliminate Project SLP Subcommittee Member Erika Lim, KCR Kim Scharoff, and KCR Michael Berthel! Thanks to everyone who attended, and especially those who participated in the service project. Also, don’t forget that Novembers is K-Family Month! Make the effort to organize an event with the Builders Club, K-Kids, or Circle K in your area! If you’re not sure what K-Family clubs are nearby, check out the newly created resource here. Finally, please save the date for the next Divisional, which will be held on November 15th at Uniondale High School at 7pm!

Yours in Service,

Summer Recap

Although most people believe Key Club only runs during the school year, Key Clubbers are actually encouraged to participate in service all year long. This year, Division 6 Key Club was very active during the summer, but I would first like to congratulate all the clubs who organized their own events and fundraisers over the summer! The first event Division 6 Key Club participated in was the Operation Care and Comfort event at Old Navy. Key Clubbers from all around the Division came together to collect donations to provide overseas troops with much needed supplies. During the weekend of the event, almost 500 articles of clothing were donated thanks to the hard work of the K-Family.

Another event we participated in was “Camp Old Navy” in July. At this event, Old Navy showed a few D6 Key Clubbers what it’s like to work at Old Navy as a part of their Field Team Grant program. The Field Team Grant program provides volunteers with real-world experiences and information about what it takes to launch a career. After a long day of organizing inventory, learning sales techniques, and watching training videos, Division 6 received a $250 grant that I have chosen to donate to the Eliminate Project.

On multiple occasions, Division 6 assisted LTG-elect Ann Torcivia with her organization, the Joey Foundation, which was started in honor of her son who passed away from Aplastic anemia a few years ago. The Joey Foundation raises funds and donates them to children’s organizations of any kind. Every so often, Ann and a group of volunteers set up a “Jewels for Joey” booth at local craft fairs in order to sell jewelry. 100% of the funds raised go towards the Joey Foundation. The fairs are always really fun to attend, so if you’re interested in volunteering in the future, please contact me.

Finally, Division 6 Key Club was extremely involved with the West Hempstead Court Aktion Club over the summer. In addition to attending regular Aktion Club Meetings, Key Clubbers served on an Aktion Club Mini-Convention Committee that planned the first ever Aktion Club Mini-Convention. The Mini-Convention had informative workshops for the Aktion Clubbers as well as an Eliminate Project themed service project. Anyone from the Division is allowed to help out the Aktion Clubbers at their monthly meetings, so if you’re interested in volunteering let me know!

Youth Opportunities Fund

Governor Daniel

YOF, also known as the Youth Opportunities Fund is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. The fund allows Key Clubs and their members to serve the world, have fundraisers, and other great events by providing grants for service opportunities. Clubs are allowed to apply for these funds if necessary to assist their club's functioning and to help them accomplish things that they want to do like raise money for Eliminate, host a local senior center dance, etc. You too can apply for these funds. Clubs may request funding assistance anywhere from $100 to $2000. Although the due date for applications this year have past, please start considering applying for next year. YOF is a wonderful service offered to Key Club that needs to be utilized more often.

I hope this will be a helpful resource for your club for the years to come. For more information please follow the links provided. Trick-Or-Treat for Unicef- Every year during the month of October, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and Key Club partner up in order to raise money for children all over the world. This year, UNICEF has pledged to donate the funds raised specifically to the Eliminate Project, whose goal is to eliminate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus from the world. If you haven’t already ordered your boxes from the Kiwanis store (http://store.kiwanis.org/product/2727), don’t worry because you still have time to participate in the event! UNICEF recommends that you send in your boxes anytime during October or November. When you receive your order you might notice that the boxes this year aren’t the classic orange color they used to be. As part of a campaign to redesign the boxes, Kiwanis is asking that you draw your own Halloween character on the box and then submit a picture of it. Winning designs will be used to create next years’ UNICEF character boxes. For more information visit their website here.
