On the rainy day of October 7th, Farrington Key Club volunteered for clean-up at the Children’s Day event. At this event, we picked up litter --such as candy wrappers, school size milk cartons, and plastics-- around the State Capital. Looking around while we picked up trash, we got to see what this event had to offer. From enormous bouncy houses, to incredible dancing, and seeing other members volunteer to play tennis with the children was interesting. Towards the end of this service project, we went around and replaced the trash can that were filled, with new trash bags. The service project provided food for the volunteers, and ended up making too much. Since there were extra plates left, we all agreed on taking some of those plates and taking it to Aala Park to feed the homeless.

Throughout this event a ton of laughters and memories were created in the time spent together --from covering ourselves from the rain using trash bags, to singing Farrington songs all together as we replace trash bags. In this event we learned to be more aware of the trash that surrounds us and to clean it up, regardless if it’s our trash or if it’s someone else’s. Even though giving food to the homeless was not part of our service project, we learned to give our blessings --the free food-- to those who needs it.

For the service, some of us arrived earlier and the rest arrived 11:30. Some of us cut out letters for the names of the football players and the cheerleaders while others cut out the paper to put the letters on. A little later when we finished cutting, we went on to put all the cut out letters all together for the seniors’ names. In the process of this we all helped one another to get the work done. We all worked together to get it done quickly and get as much names completed. The posters were made for seniors and we used our creative minds and skills to try and decorate it as nice as possible. It’s the football players’ and cheerleaders’ last year of their high-school journey so of course making the posters is one way we can make it even more special for them.

Overall, everyone seemed like they had fun, everyone was smiling and communicating well with one another. No such drama occurred thankfully no matter how stressed we may have gotten since the posters were done only two days before senior night occured. Even with such limited time left to do the names and posters, we successfully completed this service project for the seniors. Ms. Schubert, the Farrington High School Events Coordinator, told everyone that she was glad everyone came to help out. After the service, everyone went home feeling tired yet happy knowing they contributed once again to their community.

On the day of October 19, 2018, Farrington Key club volunteered to help bring joy to the Kiwanis Family dance. During this event we danced all night with other people and we also get to meet them. Some of the people at the dance had disabilities and if they needed help with anything we would assist them. We would also dance with them and help them enjoy the dance. Another thing we would do at this event is help pass out items that the people in charge of this event would give. Such as, stuffed animals and snacks. They would also have a raffle and the people who win the raffle get stuffed animals and we would give the person who won, their prize. We would also cheer for them.

Overall, during this community service project we had fun and laughed by dancing with others and also meeting new people. Not only that, we helped other people enjoy this event. This also showed how lively and supportive Farrington Key club is. Furthermore, some of the people at the dance had disabilities and even if they did have a disability we would dance with them. This shows that people with disabilities are equal to the people without disabilities and at this event we treated them equally by dancing with them and talking to them politely.

On Sunday, October 21, 2018, Farrington Key Club helped out at Honolulu Museum of Art for the Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday. The theme for this month was “Hocus Pocus” in which the kids were all dressed up for Halloween. As for the event, we did arts and crafts relating to Halloween. Members had to design cup lanterns, which were made up of a plastic cup and an electric candle.

Our procedures were to make Halloween themed pieces to put on the cup. For example, we done paper ghosts, spiders, pumpkins, bats, and more. It was crowded and a bit messy because the wind was blowing all the paper around, but it was still enjoyable helping the kids. Each table was called to eat lunch one by one. Then we continued to help cut out pieces for kids or to help them draw and paste them on their cups. When there was 15 minutes to spare, we decided to clean our station and floors.

On October 26, we went to Puuhale Elementary School for the Trunk or Treat event. There were different groups and clubs from Farrington so we all were basically grouped to a certain section of the event to which Key Club were mainly in charge of the bouncy house. But before that we were able to decorate the whole cafeteria with materials given to us such as sledged webs, ghost, and other decorations to make a spooky outlook of while cafeteria. As for the bouncy house what we basically did was collect the tickets, arranged the kids shoes to neat and organized, and made sure that their was no fighting or pushing inside the bouncy house. The kids in the bouncy house seemed to had fun and enjoyed as much as we did.

For me personally I enjoyed the event a lot because it was a different experience. I had as well as everybody decorating the cafeteria and making it spooky for the vibe of the place. For the bouncy house everybody pretty much had fun and the kids were so cute in their costumes which the Key Cluber’s admired the most. Towards the end since not that much people were coming and people were starting to leave we had a little fun ourselves and some of us actually went inside the bouncy house which was fun.

Officer’s MessageHey, Farrington Key Clubbers!

My name is Bernadette Castillo and I served as your Treasurer for this school year. I’m really happy that this year we have new and active members in our club. Also, I have been hearing that our members are having fun and likes going to the service projects we are providing. It makes us, the board members, feel happy because it means that our hard work is paying off and it’s worth it. For those who are still new to Key Club, I would encourage you to try and go to monthly DCM’s because you get to know that Key Club is much more than doing service projects, we fundraise for organizations like UNICEF, March of Dimes, and much more. Also, you get to meet other people from other schools in our division. So, if you don’t know this we are in Division 22 Hikina, the schools in this division are ‘Iolani, Kaiser, Kalani, Kamehameha, Maryknoll, Punahou, Roosevelt, and Saint Louis. It’s really a fun experience to try because when I went for the first time last year as a member, I realized that Key Club brings a lot of people and you have so many opportunities to build friendships from other people from other schools. If you can’t make it to the DCM’s, then try go to our social because it’s a chance for everyone to know each other in the club. As you know, one of Key Club’s values is inclusiveness, so the socials are a good way to get everyone to know each other. Joining Key Club is the best decision I’ve made during my high school years because I am giving back to the community and this can bring me new opportunities in the future. It’s good to have extra-curricular activities in your resume because colleges see that you care for others, not just yourself and grades. I hope everyone a nice school year and I hope everyone continues with our club.
