a letter from our president

Dear Members,

During a whirlwind summer, we had over

300 campers per week throughout the building

exploring everything that MJCC Day Camp

has to offer. We touched so many lives with

our increased traditional and

specialty camp offerings as

well as our Early Childhood

Camps. The MJCC would

like to thank all of you for

entrusting us with your

children, and we hope

you will sign them up

again next summer.

This fall is an exciting

time at the MJCC. Our

Markell School of Dance

has introduced a dual program which allows

dancers to dance in either a recreational or pre-

professional capacity. Recreational dancers enjoy

dancing but have many other extra-curricular

activities and commitments, so they may only

have time to dance with us once a week. Pre-

professional dancers are interested in dancing

in college and professionally and are able to

commit to attending many dance classes during

the week. We believe that this change will make

dance classes more accessible to many more

students and will help to continue to build

an even stronger Markell School of Dance.

Also this fall, the Second Annual MJCC

Literary and Cultural Arts Festival will take

place beginning October 30. With outstanding

speakers and additional events, this year’s

festival shouldn’t be missed. The author lineup

is tremendous, including Memphis Native

Robert Gordon, Geralyn Lucas, and Nate

Hausmann. You can learn more about the

Festival on pages 12 and 13.

I hope that you have heard

by now that beginning in

August 2015, the MJCC will

be opening an Infant Care

Center for children as young

as nine weeks old. A waiting

list is already forming, so

if you know anyone who

might be interested, please

encourage them to speak

with Lindsey Chase, Early

Childhood Director. In order to make room

for this change, the 2014-2015 school year

will be our last Kindergarten class. While we

will miss the Kindergartners, we are excited

for the opportunity to begin our connections

with families at an even younger age.

Save the date for our Second Annual Health

and Wellness Expo, which will take place

Sunday, January 18. Kick start your New Year’s

Resolutions with us for a happy and healthy 2015.

As always, if you have any questions or

suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact

me at [email protected] or Larry

Skolnick at [email protected].

Hope to see you soon!

Craig Weiss, MJCC Board President

HEALTH&WELLNESSEXPO Sun, Jan 18

10am–4pm

SAVE THE DATE!

Craig Lewis came to the MJCC just over two years ago after attending a training workshop at the MJCC, and he hasn’t left since. Starting as a group exercise instructor and personal trainer, Craig is no stranger to those who frequent the Fitness Center.

He has also instructed many different developmental and fi tness programs for the Sports Department and the Early Childhood Center, making “Coach Craig” a familiar face to even our

smallest members.

Before the MJCC, Craig worked in the private school system as a Physical Education and Health Educator as well as a tutor and coach.

Craig became interested in Fitness professionally

when his struggles with his own weight and bad habits were brought to his attention by his doctor. His wake-up call came at the age of 26, when he was told to start cholesterol medicine. With proper exercise and nutrition, Craig lost 150 lbs. and has since vowed to help others do the same.

Craig’s personal philosophy is, “It is the daily actions compounded over time that make the difference. One salad and one workout will not make

you skinny, any more than one hamburger will make you fat.”

He also feels that it is our responsibility to help others any way possible, and that is hard to do if we are not taking care of ourselves.

Craig is a runner and cyclist and can be seen on the Greenline many times throughout the week. When not at the MJCC he can be found running with his dog, Wrigley, painting in his studio at home, or in the garden working with his plants.

The TRX Suspension Trainer allows you to unload and leverage your body weight while performing strength, mobility, and fl exibility exercises. Any exercise can be modifi ed to suit your range of motion and strength level.

To get the most out of your body for both sports and everyday life, you must make fl exibility and mobility training part of your workout program. If you don’t, you may injure yourself by short-stroking the movement or forcing yourself through it.Flexibility refers to your total available range of motion around a joint.Mobility refers to how well you can move through the appropriate range of motion for a joint.
