LET’S GIVE THANKS

Traditions are a hallmark of the holidays. One center tradition is for St. Leonard Chef Michael Wilhelm to prepare our annual Thanksgiving luncheon. This year the celebration will be on Friday, November 17 at 11:30 AM. The menu is the customary turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, roll, and pumpkin pie. However, don’t expect a traditional nap after the feast. The beat of the New Horizons Jazz Band makes drooping eyes an impossibility. Sarah Williams, Hannah’s Treasure Chest director, will be on hand to accept our final donation of clothes, toys, and everyday items during this party sponsored by Village at the Greene, a brand new facility offering skilled nursing and therapy services.

Cost is $15. Reservations required by November 10.

VIVA LA HOLIDAYS!

What do the colors red, green, and white bring to mind? The holidays of course. Also the flag of Italy. That leads to a holiday party menu on Friday, December 15 at 11:30 AM that is pure Italian, beginning with a Whole Foods buffet of pasta, marinara and alfredo sauces, meatballs and grilled chicken, broccoli and tossed salad, and garlic bread. Dessert is peppermint stick ice cream. Bring a holiday ornament valued at $5 or below (red, green, or white would be nice) and you’ll go home with another that the universe picks out for you during a fun group exchange. Finally, we’ll show the holiday classic “White Christmas”, knowing that red and green will also have to show up somewhere in the film. Special Nights at Woodland Lights

Leaves may be falling now but snow will soon be swirling along the paths of Countryside Park, creating a festive atmosphere for our 25th season of Woodland Lights. Santa opens the community festival at 6 PM on November 24 and, after two weekend openings, Woodland Lights begins its nightly run December 8-30 (closed December 24 and 25). Two special nights are set aside for Enrichment Center patrons to explore Woodland Lights together at half-price ($4). Generous sponsorships make this offer possible. December 13: Bethany Village and Graceworks at HomeDecember 20: Symphony at Centerville

Those who have “walked the path to holiday fun” in the past now consider it a family tradition. Generations of families gather at the gate with the same anticipation they felt their first year, anxious to share the magical experience with younger family members.

However, you don’t have to be a child or have children with you to delight in what is now a holiday hallmark in Washington Township. All you need is a whimsical spirit and a friend or two or ten to accompany you through the eight acres of dazzling lights and animated displays in Countryside Park. Add a nostalgic carriage ride, a taste of festival fare and a personal chat with Santa and it’s the holidays just like you remember them!

If you would like to experience Woodland Lights in the company of friends and through the generosity of our sponsors, meet at the Enrichment Center at 6 PM on one of our special nights. Staff will lead you on this magical journey. Who knows what holiday surprises might be in store for you!

Monthly Highlights

We are entering the season of giving and thanksgiving. Many of us have everything we need, and more. Others are not so fortunate. Let’s show our gratitude for all the good in our lives by giving to others. One way to do that is by stocking the warehouse at Hannah’s Treasure Chest.

Hannah’s is a non-profit clearinghouse that collects and distributes tangible items to children and families in need through a collaboration with 50+ Miami Valley social service agencies. We will be accepting donations of new or like-new clothing, toys, and essential everyday items beginning Monday, October 30 and ending at our Thanksgiving Luncheon on Friday, November 17. Wooden cribs will be set up in the Rec Center and Enrichment Center for your donations and a wish list will be posted online and in facilities. Our goal is to fill the cribs many times over during the collection period.

TENNIS ANYONE?Follow the bouncing ball, whether it’s jumping over a table or floor net. Playing tennis in any form is a great way to work up a sweat while feeding your competitive streak. Table tennis has a healthy following on Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30-3:30 PM, in the Rec West gym. Many players go on to win state and national tournaments. Short tennis does just what the name implies on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11 AM. It uses a shortened court, smaller rackets, and softer balls to provide a great workout without the intensity of regular tennis. Walk-ins welcome.

FITNESS ORIENTATION AND PERSONAL TRAININGGet the most out of your fitness room workout by learning safe and effective ways to use the equipment. A one-hour orientation is offered at 10 AM on October 4 & 16, November 1 & 13, and December 6 & 18. It is free for Silver Sneakers and Complete Pass Holders. Fees for others are online. A personal trainer is available to work with you one-on-one to help you achieve your fitness goals. Cost is $30 for 1 session, $74 for 3 sessions and $119 for 5 sessions.

FOR SILVER SNEAKERSThe Rec Center has three classes designed by and for SilverSneakers. Each is limited to 30 participants and is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Rec West gym. BOOM classes are done standing and require participants to wear sneakers (silver is optional!) and be able to move in all directions without stability issues.

Silver Sneakers Classic • 10:45 AM

Move to the music using a variety of exercises designed to increase muscle strength and range of motion. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a resistance ball are used. A chair is available for seated or standing support.

BOOM Move It • 1:00 PMGet your cardio workout during a dance fitness class featuring dances from the 1960’s through the 1990’s. The class is achievable for beginner to experienced dancers. Classes finish with a signature “Group Groove” where participants perform a group dance.

BOOM Muscle • 1:45 PMAchieve a total body workout through a unique tri-muscle combination of three progressive exercises. Participants select the intensity and complexity appropriate for their individual fitness level.

Why It’s Important To…Return library materials • The books and videos in our library are the property of the Washington-Centerville Public Library. The library must charge us for excessive losses. We cannot afford to continue the service if books are not returned.

Register for classes • We plan and promote activities months before they occur. There are times when classes are canceled or changed after they are publicized. Those who register at the front desk or online can be contacted when changes happen; walk-ins cannot.

Dress in layers It is impossible to set the temperature to a degree comfortable for everyone coming to the center or even participating in the same activity. Pleasebe prepared to add or subtract clothing to reach your comfort zone.

Busy Hands Make Happy Hearts & Gorgeous Quilts!

Hand quilting is good for the soul. Just ask the ladies who meet every Thursday at our quilting frames. Not only does quilting make them feel good, they are doing good for the center by creating a quilt for us to raffle during the holidays. “Blue Hawaii” is a queen-size, hand-appliqued and hand-quilted Hawaiian sampler with dominant colors of blue, gold and white inspired by former quilter Ruth Lewis. Raffle tickets go on sale October 16 and are $1 each or 6 for $5. The winner will be drawn at our holiday party on December 15. A class in the art of quilting will be offered this winter. In the meantime, stop by on Thursdays from 1-3 and get a quick tutorial from our experts.

Please be prepared to add or subtract clothing to reach your comfort zone.

Autumn Leaves

The slower pace of autumn will quickly be replaced by the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Take time this fall to get things in order by attending our Wellness Festival and Medicare Reviews. Then, plan your 2018 vacations during our Travel Showcase; bake and decorate holiday cookies with our community partners; and party with your friends at our Thanksgiving luncheon and holiday party. You can also gather new knowledge during our Lunch & Learn series and educational programs sponsored by the Ohio Consumer’s Council, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, and local community entities- the historical society, library, and park district. Add in workouts in our fitness room and exercise classes and you’ve got a well-rounded schedule to get you from falling leaves to blowing snow.

All activities listed in this newsletter require registration, unless otherwise noted. Visit the center, call 433-0130, or go online at washingtontwp.org/reg

This special get together is sponsored by Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices.

Cost is $15 plus one ornament to exchange. Reservations required by December 11.
