Director General’s Message On the threshold of the New Year and at the dawn of the last quarter of the financial year, I am glad to report phenomenal performance of CPRI in all spheres – be it the number of research publications or testing activities. This could not have been possible but for the support of our clients, which is kindly acknowledged.

We now have young research scholars as JRF/SRF who will work towards their masters/doctoral program at CPRI on being confirmed as a research center by the Visvesvaraya Technological University and shortly we are in the process of inviting post-doctoral scholar, which will add a fillip to our activities and also contribute our mite to the research community. This is in addition to the CPRI chair which is established at the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore.

This quarter, many foreign clients utilized our test facility and also witnessed the tests. M/s Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, Dubai visited CPRI, for Pre-Qualification of our facilities in the area of Power Transformers, Switchgear, Cables, Capacitors, Overhead line accessories, Seismic facility, Transformer Oil and Surge Arresters.

We are glad to report many a accolades : CPRI awarded the of Best National Research Institute by “ENERTIA Journal” instituted ENERTIA AWARDS for fostering and encouraging the Excellence in the Power and Energy Sector. The Director General of CPRI being selected CEO of The Year (Research) by the 6th India Power Award 2013, CPRI website being granted Website Quality Certificate for Quality Level-1 under STQC Website Quality Certification Scheme. “CPRI News” has been awarded as the “Best News Letter” by the Town Official Language Implementation Committee.

Not one to rest on our laurels, we shall strive to serve our stake holder and emerge as the best in the world.

To harness the solar energy and supplement conventional power generation systems, the solar PV power plants with grid tied systems are being installed in India. In these systems, inverters play a major role in pumping the power into the grid. Inverters work by taking the DC power from the source, such as an array of solar photovoltaic modules (typically 250 to 600 V DC) and inverting it to AC power. According to working principle, there are many different types of inverters, such as central inverters for wide power range from 1 kW to up to 600 kW or even more, string inverters and module inverters. Inverters are based on microprocessor circuits, classic or RISC, and on power MOS or IGBT transistors. Inverters of different technologies operate with wide variations in power quality and efficiencies.

In order to test the compliance of grid tied inverter with international standards and also to standardize the specifications, a test facility for solar/renewable based grid connected inverters has been establishes in CPRI, in its Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Division.

Using this facility performance of the inverters can be evaluated and tested as per MNRE specifications/ IEC 61683.

Special Test conducted :

A Temperature rise test was carried out at 25000A on 24 kV 3 phase 50 Hz isolated phase busduct of M/s Reep Industries P Ltd, Maraimalainagar, Tamil Nadu at the 25 kA TR facilities at CPRI, Bhopal on December 18, 2013. The busduct is due for supply to the 2 x 800 MW Kakrapar Project of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. The test was conducted as per IS 8084, 1976 and IEEE C37.23, 2003 in general and the performance of the unit found satisfactory. This is the highest rating of equipment tested for temperature rise at CPRI so far.

Observance of “Vigilance Awareness Week – 2013” at CPRI

In News

The Institute at Bangalore celebrated the 122nd Birth Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on 9th October 2013. Prof. S G Siddaramaiah a renowned Kannada Writer delivered a talk on Dr. B R Ambedkar on the Occasion. Merit Awards were awarded to the children of employees who have passed 10th & 12th Standard Public examinations.

As per the directive of Central Vigilance Commission, New Delhi “Vigilance Awareness Week – 2013” was observed at CPRI from 28th October 2013 to 2nd November 2013 with the theme of “Promoting Good Governance – Positive Contribution of Vigilance”. As a part of observance of vigilance awareness week, CPRI organized a series of events including taking vigilance pledge at 11 AM on 28th October 2013 by all staff and officers of CPRI at all its units at Bhopal, Hyderabad, Noida, Nagpur, Kolkata and Guwahathi. Vigilance awareness week was observed with active participation by the employees of CPRI.

A programme was organized at CPRI, Bangalore, on 1st November 2013 inviting Lt. Gen Ramesh Halgali PVSM, AVSM, SM , Army Deputy Chief (Retired), Indian Army as the Chief Guest. Dr. H N Ngamani, Chief Vigilance Officer CPRI, welcomed the gathering. Shri N. Murugesan, Director General, CPRI in his address expressed the importance of vigilance and steps to be taken for preventive vigilance. Lt. Gen Ramesh Halgali PVSM, AVSM, SM, delivered a talk on “Role of ethics and human values in public life” and also distributed the prizes to the winners of the competitions. Dr. S Seetharamu, Director, CPRI proposed vote of thanks.

During the observance of Vigilance Awareness Week from 28th October, to 2nd November, 2013, different programmes were organized, at STDS-CPRI, Bhopal. CPRI & ITMA jointly organized the “12th International Conference cum Exhibition “TRAFOSEM 2013” at CWIEME International Centre, Bangalore, on 15th November, 2013. More than 200 delegates participated in the conference and about 25 technical papers were presented. A stall was set up by CPRI showcasing the technology and materials related to transformer at the exhibition. The conference was inaugurated by Shri K.H. M/s PowerGrid Corporation of India Ltd., Moga awarded the job of Measurement of Earth Resistance, Step and Touch Potential at their 765kV Substation, Moga to CPRI, Bangalore.

Measurements were to be carried out for three different seasons in a year. CPRI have carried out the measurement of earth resistance for the interconnected Earthing system of 765kV Substation at Moga during winter season besides Step & Touch Potential measurements were also carried out. For the first time such a measurement is being carried out for a 765kV class of substation.

Central Power Research Institute was identified as the Nodal Agency for conducting State Level Painting Competition on Conservation of Energy for the State of Karnataka. In all 45,000 students belonging to standard 4, 5 & 6 in the Category A and 7, 8 & 9 in the Category B, took part in the competition at the school level. Among the paintings received from the School Level, 50 each in the Category A and Category B were selected for State Level Painting Competition.

The Institute organized one-day “State Level Painting Competition on Energy Conservation” on Tuesday the November 12, 2013 in association with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE, under Ministry of Power, Government of India).

About 100 students of both the categories drawn from various schools across the state of Karnataka took part in the competition. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in each category along with 10 consolation prizes were awarded with certificates. The prizes were selected by the jury consisting of eminent officials/personalities of Art & Culture, Government of Karnataka. The following are the students who won the first three prizes in the State Level Painting Competition in Category A and Category B :

The certificate award function was held at Silver Jubilee Auditorium of CPRI and the Chief Guest was Shri Mohammed Mohsin, IAS, Commissioner of Public Instruction, Government of Karnataka, who distributed the certificates to the winners.

A workshop on “R&D projects in the area of Hydro Generation” was jointly organized by CPRI and CEA on 25th November 2013 to showcase the achievements of projects under taken through National Perspective Plan (NPP) and Research Scheme on Power (RSOP Schemes). More than 100 delegates attended this knowledge sharing workshop and there was a panel discussion about hydro projects for the 12th plan period.

More than 300 dignitaries and delegates from Switchgear & Controlgear Manufacturers, Utilities, State DISCOMS, academic institutions and PSUs such as BHEL, PGCIL, NTPC, NHDC, NHPTL from all over the country participated in the conference. The delegates from Italy, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Middle East also participated in the International Conference. Over 48 technical papers were presented by various organizations like L&T, TAMCO Malaysia, BHEL, Crompton Greaves, ABB, Siemens, UL India, GE, GETCO, Schneider Electric and CPRI. Director General CPRI felicitated the eminent switchgear experts from all over the country.

The chief guest of the function Shri V.S. Verma, Member , CERC mentioned about the challenges being faced in the field of Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution Sector. He emphasized to enhance CPRI testing facilities for the forthcoming requirements for next 10 to 15 years. He also suggested CPRI to make proposal to Government

of India based on the recommendations on the outcome of this International Conference. In this conference various aspects of power sector problems in switchgear and controlgear and emerging trends in design of LT/HT Switchgear were discussed in detail.

During the concluding session the Director General CPRI awarded the 3 best papers each from Industries and CPRI. The manufacturers expressed their concern that some of the utilities and DISCOMs are still following the old specifications which needs to be updated as per the present scenario.

The 16th Meeting of Standing Committee on R&D (SCRD) was held on 7th December 2013, at CEA, New Delhi under the chairmanship of Ms. Neerja Mathur , Chairperson, CEA to discuss the Technical and Financial Progress of on-going Research Projects under National Perspective Plan, review the action taken on the decisions of 15th meeting of SCRD held on 29th July 2013 and to seek approval of SCRD for proposals recommended by the Task Forces.

Distribution Systems Division of CPRI, Bangalore organized a two day workshop on “Workshop on Grounding Practices” during 21-22 November 2013. 41 delegates from different organization and institutions participated in this workshop. Various aspects of Grounding system were made followed with field demonstrations of Soil Resistivity and Earth resistance measurements. National Conference on “Recent Trends in Overhead Transmission Lines” was organized by Mechanical Engineering Division, CPRI, Bangalore from 19th & 20th December 2013 at SJ Auditorium, CPRI, Bangalore. About 75 delegates representing power utilities, tower/conductor manufacturers, state electricity boards participated in the conference.

Dielectric Materials Division had conducted Tutorial Program on “Testing of New & In-service Transformer oil and Lubricating oil during 16-12-2013 to 20-12-2013. The tutorial program was organized in Four different modules: Module 1 – Testing of New Transformer Oil as per IS 335:2000 RA 2010 and IEC 60296 standards. This module was conducted for two days on 16.12.2013 and 17.12.2013. About 25 delegates from various organization participated in the program. Module 2 – Testing of In-service Transformer oil as per IS 1866:2000 RA 2010 standard. This module was conducted on 18.12.2013. There were 30 delegates participated in this module. Module 3 – Diagnostic studies . This module was conducted on 19.12.2013. There were 32 delegates for this module. Module 4 – Lubricating oils. This module was conducted on 20.12.2013. There were 15 delegates for this module . At the end of each module, the tests were demonstrated to the participants in the Laboratory.
