From the editorial team September brings to a close what has been a memorable Summer, whether you wish to look at it from the point of view of the Olympic/Paralympic Games, Diamond Jubilee or other events happening at the same time. It is the traditional time in which children return to school, start at “big” school or even go off to university, and it’s all change in my household at the moment as Isaac has just started at nursery.

So what for the rest of the year as the temperatures drop and the nights draw in? We have the ADVA Curry and Quiz night, followed by Messy Church and the Kenya Barn Dance in October alone and it will be fantastic to see as many people as possible supporting these events. There may not be quite the same opportunity to sit out on rugs and laugh at people old enough to know better being silly in the name of a Jubilee celebration, but the village has not gone to sleep either.

I’ve turned my hand to my weaker suit this month, that being a roving reporter covering the Produce Show. If anyone does fancy themselves as a journalist on a local scale, please drop me a line via email ([email protected]) or phone me on 01794 341980 as I’d be thrilled to have your input! It gets boring if one person does all the writing after all…

From the chairman’s PenThe show turned out well considering that it was such a difficult year for growing anything in the garden or orchard, a few entries down on last year but different people took part. Thanks to Paul for undertaking the auction afterwards, this was enjoyed by all. A BIG thank you to every body whether you took part, came to view, judged or helped with all the jobs on the day.

We have been asked to repeat it next year so watch this space for the date. This year we did include some of your ideas, so if you have any more on how we can improve the show send your comments to the editor by email or letter.

Looking forward to seeing you at the curry and quiz night.

the Village website workshop 8 nov ** come Along - All Are welcome **The village website is now live, so we will be running a small workshop on the 8th November at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. There will be a short demonstration of how to use the site, whether you want to sell something, chat about the local walks or just post some interesting facts, you can join in and get online.

We are trying to establish a community feel on the site so we need you to all register and get involved and start using it!

The workshop will be especially useful for all those who will be looking after their particular pages on the site.

committee Profile – Paul HarveyI grew up in Gloucestershire but lived for over thirty years in Staffordshire, most of that on the fringe of Cannock Chase.

I am married to Pam and have two sons and one grand-daughter. I worked as a teacher and later head of a languages department in state schools for most of my working life. Initially, I loved the job and immersed myself in clubs, overseas exchanges, trips and staff societies.

I have a number of interests: music, theatre, DIY, hill-walking and amateur radio. I got my radio licence 20 years ago and was for many years a keen member of the Stafford clubs.

I recently joined the tool refurbishing charity in Netley Marsh and really enjoy my weekly session of metal-bashing. It enables me to get to know people in the area and hopefully make a useful contribution. I am also a volunteer for Neighbourcare.

It is good to be part of ADVA, as it is friendly, well-run and gets things done. I still feel very much a novice member and have much to learn, but I am enthusiastic and keen to support and help organise whatever events come along.


All saints Awbridge - october 2012 We have just celebrated Harvest so thank you for all your generous donations which have been given to Southampton City Mission and for decorating the church so beautifully for harvest time. We also enjoyed a wonderful lunch provided by our social committee in the village hall.

operation christmas child: the power of a simple gift: It is now time to be thinking about making up our shoeboxes. In Awbridge there will be a special coffee morning promoting Operation Christmas Child on Saturday 10 November 10 – 12 noon at the village hall, sponsored by ADVA. Do come along with your completed boxes or bring items to go in boxes so we can make up some more. You should have received a leaflet on how to make up a shoebox with your ADVA newsletter. Awbridge neighbourcare

The village lunch held on Wednesday 26th September at the village hall was very well attended and everyone enjoyed a friendly chat over a delicious meal. The last village lunch of the year will be the Christmas lunch on Wednesday 5th December. This is always a special event with a full Christmas dinner and all the trimmings for a cost of only £6 per person. Why not put the date in your diary now? All villagers are welcome to join in.

The Paralympics proved to be very inspirational and again the volunteers played a vital part. Volunteering is very worthwhile and as well as fulfilling a need in society it also promotes personal well-being. Awbridge Neighbourcare relies on volunteers to provide transport for villagers who would otherwise find it difficult to attend appointments. A friendly face and a chat can be very reassuring for someone waiting in a doctors’ surgery or hospital clinic. Please consider becoming a volunteer for Awbridge Neighbourcare. If you would like to use Awbridge Neighbourcare, please could you try to give at least 48 hours’ notice when you need to book transport so that the duty co-ordinator has time to make the necessary arrangements. Although we will endeavour to help if shorter notice is given, we cannot guarantee the availability of our volunteers.

“Operation Christmas Child: the power of a simple gift”

www.operationchristmaschild.org.ukCome and help us celebrate Operation Christmas Child by making your own shoebox gift and bringing it to our special coffee morning on Saturday 10 November 10 00 am – 12 noon at Awbridge Village Hall. Last year 1.1 million shoeboxes were sent from the UK including to this little girl in Montenegro.

So if you have never made a box before, or haven’t done one for a while, make this a special year when you can give that hope to families like this, so take part and join in and it will help you to discover the joys of giving and sharing.

Part of our local celebration will be the Romsey Deanery service for Operation Christmas Child which will be held on Sunday 18 November, at 3 pm at All Saints, Braishfield. All the communities in our benefice are busy getting involved in shoeboxes.

The collection dates for dropping off boxes are 1-18 November. Leaflets, posters and resources are now available to order from the website and leaflets are available from churches in the benefice and at Choice Plants, Timsbury, if you would like to order your own and see current stories or find knitting patterns then have a look at www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk. AwbridgeVillageProduce Show 2012

Awbridge Produce show – 1st sept2012 was always going to be a difficult year for produce in the village, as the lack of warm weather and excessive rain earlier clearly wouldn’t be ideal growing conditions for most things. There were plenty of jokes about raiding the farmers market and hoping no-one would notice, but there was no need to worry as the Village Hall was full of wonderful fare once more. For those with a head for figures, we had 170 items entered this year, which given the year we’ve had is not to be sniffed at.

I managed to have a good long look at all the produce before the doors were opened and to use a cliché, they were all winners in my eyes. It was slightly disappointing though to see that the men only baking class hadn’t any entries in it – there will be one next year as I’ll enter, so to the men of Awbridge – take up the challenge!

The village hall looked a treat, and after a frantic half hour of totting up scores the refreshments went down a treat as well. A big thank you to all who gave their time to set up, judge, handwrite placing cards and man the desks on the day – the event simply wouldn’t run without your input.

Polite request From Hansard Pet centreAs we are approaching the season where fireworks are let off, please remember to consider neighbours who are elderly, those who have pets and livestock owners.

A quick chat with your neighbours could save unnecessary upset and embarrassment when it was never intended.

Such was the owner’s excitement at watching the Olympic sailing, he forgot to put suncream on. Let that be a cautionary tale to anyone who is of a slightly forgetful disposition!!!

Awbridge gardening clubOur September meeting took place on Wednesday September 12th when Paul Templeton came to speak about “Fruit growing.” He covered all aspects of his subject and the interest of the meeting was obvious in the number of questions asked at the end of his talk. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday October 12th at 7.30pm in the Awbridge Village Hall, when Mrs. Patricia Elkington will talk on “The secret gardens of Hampshire.” Visitors are welcome to come to hear this interesting speaker.

More musings from Maurice

Even in the caravan my wife and I could not miss the fact that the country has been involved in many major events involving competitions. The Olympics, Paralympics and Andy Murray winning the Grand Slam in the USA to name just a few, so when I heard that farmer Will Hillier was going to enter a “Fruit Cake” in the Awbridge show I took the information in my stride and presumed he was going to enter his wife Bev! I suspect a full article about the Awbridge Show is elsewhere in this magazine so perhaps I should move on to The Romsey Show.

May I explain we left the caravan on the Monday and returned to Romsey on Friday staying in B&B accommodation. It took me most of Thursday to find anywhere to stay so I took the first available offer with both hands, but more of that later!

The organisers must have been delighted both with the weather and the excellent turn out. Margaret and I arrived at 09.15 and were directed to an already very busy parking area. One thing that I could not help noticing was the signs which were very helpful. I thought the sign by the sheep pens may have had something to do with Will Hillier, who managed to get an award for some of his sheep, (not a fruit cake!) which said “It is unadvisable for pregnant women to be in contact with sheep”. I imagine the same sign could have been used in conjunction with some of the equestrian events and the Bournemouth Carnival Band who kept the crowds entertained with their music as they marched round the site. The band, which is a registered charity, were all dressed as “Spidermen, and women” so I suggest if you require more information you should look them up on the “Web”!!! The day became very hot during the afternoon but with plenty of stalls selling food and drink I doubt anyone suffered except perhaps in the region of their wallet. Having said that, the Church tent had a busy day with their free tea and biscuits. One or two trade stands also had hospitality areas too. A group of us met at the ”Scats” area about 4pm where we were treated to free tea,coffee and/or fruit juices for the youngsters plus a nice slice of fruit cake....(I think I am getting a fixation about fruit cake).

Near the end of the day those of us that had braved the heat and enjoyed the free fruit cake (there I go again) watched as Jason Smyth hurtled through the air on a quad bike. Hitting a ramp at speed on two wheels is, to say the least, frightening, but on four wheels does not even bear consideration. The take off point appeared to be considerably lower than the landing platform about thirty or forty feet away. I am pleased to say every leap was greeted with applause and success which is more than can be said for one of the visitors who had spent the day in the sun. The police were very considerate and helpful when he reported his car had been stolen. The first question he was asked he was unable to answer...”What is the registration number of your vehicle sir”. Colour and make he was on the ball with but again when it came to which area the car had been parked he was not sure. With the help of staff and police the car was discovered where it had been parked originally and the owner was given a lift by one of the stewards driving a small buggy back to the field. I must remember that move for next year..”Sorry constable. I have lost my car can I have a free ride to find it?” I don’t care if they do think I am a fruit cake!

Margaret and I left the show after most people had gone home and drove to a local pub for a quiet drink... The drinks did not make a sound but the pub was so noisy we made a hasty retreat back to our B&B. In the peace and quiet of our room, with twin beds, I pulled back the bed cover and went to lay down only to realise the bed was soaking wet. My first reaction was to look at the ceiling expecting to see a leak but everything was dry, which thinking about it, if there had been a leak the bedspread would have been soaked as well, not bone dry.

I called the owners and they asked me if I had spilt anything... I explained we had been out for about eleven hours and we did not have that amount of liquid in the room anyway. Everything, including the mattress had to be changed. So how could a bed get a complete soaking UNDERNEATH a bed cover? When we arrived on the Friday the owners little dog dashed into the room and went under one of the beds and did not want to come out. The owner laughed and said it was her dogs’ favourite room! We know the owner had been in the room when we were out on Saturday at the Romsey Show because clean towels had been placed on the dressing table. Was it possible the dog had managed to get in the room and under the bedspread without being seen? If the door had been locked I can only guess the dog would have made a noise when it wanted to be free, after it had answered the call of nature!! We will never know - I do know I have no wish to own a water bed.

barn dance to support Kenya Fundraising teamTickets are selling fast for the Barn Dance to raise funds for our volunteering trip to Kenya in July 2013. We would love you to join us on October 20th at Awbridge Village Hall, dancing to the Woodsiders Barn Dance & Ceilidh Band. A licensed bar will be open from 7pm, with dancing from 7.30 – 11pm.

From western country watchWe have had a number of reports across the New Forest and Lower Test Valley that the travellers visiting the Great Dorset Steam Fair are seeking out new settling grounds. We currently have a dozen travellers at Furzley crossroads.

Now that the events in Dorset are finished, expect to have many sightings of suspicious vehicles and travellers seeking easy access to land.

Please secure all gates and remain vigilant.

Awbridge Hill wildlife sanctuary october 12broad leafed helleborineOne species of flower that has appeared out of the blue at the wildlife sanctuary this year is the broad leafed helleborine. This is a plant of the orchid family that establishes itself on woodland fringes and clearings in southern England. Flowering in July and August, the broad leafed helleborine has broad green leaves and flowers which vary in colour from green, to purple and red. It seems to live a precarious life growing along the side of pathways, hedgerows and woodland edge, where they are prone to either being nibbled back by pheasant, rabbits and browsing roe deer, trampled on by badger and foxes, or cut inadvertently by machinery used to keep pathways clear. Also to be found growing in the wildlife sanctuary is the green flowered helleborine, which is easily overlooked by passers by but which first appeared in the wildlife sanctuary in 2009.

Helleborine like other orchids, produce nectar to attract insects to pollinate their flowers, these ripen to produce pods full of seed as fine as dust, which can be dispersed hundreds of miles in the wind. In order to thrive, helleborine need to live symbiotically with a fungus that grows underground and which helps provide the roots of this plant, with vital nutrients. The damp summer also saw a large number of common spotted orchids sporting massive blooms, three times their normal size, whereas the dry hot weather in the spring resulted in early purple orchids failing to flower.

As a species, helleborine thrived as Neolithic man chopped down clearings in the dark wildwood that once covered southern Britain. With the subsequent introduction of sheep, these clearings were eventually turned permanently from forest to grassland and meadows. As land was turned permanently from forest to pasture and field, helleborine declined in their range as woodland became fragmented.

The word “helleborine” derives from Greek and roughly translates to the sun princess of the northern forest where rams graze. In legend, Helle was a Greek mythical princess, carried by the ram with the golden fleece and who met her fate by drowning in the sea. Helios was the sun god, whom perhaps the princess was chasing? The “bor” in helleborine equates to the Latin word boreal, which is geographically descriptive of the area of the forests of northern Europe, but also in Greek, denotes the god of the north wind. The “rine” in helleborine appears to derive from the word ram, which in ancient times was descriptive of horned sheep, male or female.

The reasons behind the naming of most of our plants and flowers, has been lost in the mist of time and antiquity. Some flowers such as selfheal and woundwort spell out their medicinal qualities, whereas others such as the cuckoo’s pint hint at vulgar folklore. Our national flower, the bluebell, has the Latin name, hyacinthoides non

scripta (the hyacinth that is not to be written about) hence blue is to this day the colour of censorship. To the Romans it was the rose that was their national symbol - the flower’s appearance in early June, marking the start of their summer fertility rites. However about two thousand years ago, all images of the rose were by law, banished from Roman culture. This was a state of affairs that lasted for about a hundred years.

To illiterate country dwellers, the names of plants that grew around them, embraced an encyclopaedia of unwritten knowledge, folklore and wisdom.

Further Update From southern water & clancy docwraAfter a bit of a slow start in Romsey Road following problems with the road surface breaking up, we have upped the workforce and are now progressing well. In Saunders Lane 400m of new main is already in commission, with all the services transferred. We anticipate that by mid-September the work in Saunders lane will be complete.

The main has been laid in Cowleas Cottages and is currently undergoing pressure-testing and chlorination, so all going well, service-transfers on that section should be starting week commencing 24.09.2012.

Cowleas Close and the unmade road by the care home we have since discovered are under private ownership, and we are awaiting the appropriate land entry consent.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank the residents for their understanding and patience, especially while we were working in the narrow section of Saunders Lane where there were a few difficult moments we had to overcome, with Tractors towing hay bales becoming slowed by our works.

Awbridge evening w.i.John Donaldson, a Chartered Financial Planner, was the entertaining and informative guest speaker at the September meeting. He was able to advise members on some of the pitfalls which abound when we start to need residential care - and how to avoid them. What could have been a difficult subject was made easier to understand by his advice on a feasible ‘Game Plan’.

Members expressed their opinions on the Romsey Show W I tent. All had enjoyed their visits to ‘Kiss Me Kate’ at Chichester and to see the Queen’s diamonds at Buckingham Palace. Several members are going to the Autumn Council meeting in Portsmouth and to the Group meeting early in October. A team will represent Awbridge at the Group skittles, to be held at Mottisfont Social Club.

Outings to Bath and London and a short holiday in Matlock to visit the Christmas market are all in the pipeline for the next couple of months. The next fund raiser will be a Casino Evening with supper on November 3rd. Tickets are already available for this and it promises to be great fun.

Next month’s speaker will be Cdr. M Hill who will tell us about life below decks on the Royal Yacht, so if you still have Jubilee Fever why not come and join us on 11th October, you will be very welcome.Burnet

slightly salted water on to boil and cook the diced potato until tender. Drain off the water and mash the potato. Set aside.

In a frying pan, melt the butter and add the onion, garlic and chilli. Fry for a few minutes until the onion becomes translucent, but not brown. Add the ground coriander, cardamom and turmeric to the pan with a little water. Stir in the mince and carrot and fry until the mince browns.

Transfer the mixture to a lidded pan and add the tomatoes and ketchup. With the pan covered, simmer very gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Now take the lid off and add the fresh coriander, dried fenugreek leaves, garam masala and salt. Continue with a gentle simmer until the moisture has evaporated.

Combine the mashed potato in to the mixture and sprinkle in a little flour to bring it to the consistency of sausage meat. Allow to cool.

Beat the egg in a bowl with a little milk to make ‘egg wash’.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry to about 3mm (1/4”) thick, unless you have the pastry already in sheet form.

Cut the pastry into four equal pieces, so once down the middle, top to bottom and once across the centre, left to right. Now cut each quarter into three equal strips, so cutting left to right.

With each strip, put a line of filling along the centre. Roll the pastry over the filling and cut in half to make two rolls.

Prick with a knife and brush with egg wash. Repeat until all the strips are made into rolls.

Place the rolls onto a greased baking tray and place into 200˚C (180˚C fan)/Gas Mark 6 oven for 20 minutes until golden brown.

Serve either warm or cold.

CURRY ROLLS

It is National Curry Week (8th-14th October 2012). Here is a recipe which uses lamb keema (mince) to make an Anglo-Indian version of the sausage roll. You can try these at the Kimbridge curry buffet evening on 12th October. This makes 24 rolls.

Shopping List:500 grams of frozen puff pastry block or sheet,1 small potato, peeled and diced, 50 grams of butter,1 small or ½ a medium onion, peeled & finely diced,1 clove of garlic, finely chopped or minced,2 small green chillies, finely chopped, 2 tsp of ground coriander,1 tsp of ground cardamom, 1 tsp of turmeric,350 grams of lean lamb mince, coarsely ground,1 small carrot, very finely diced, 1 tsp of tomato ketchup,200 grams of chopped tomatoes (1/2 of a standard 400g tin),25 gram packet of fresh coriander, finely chopped,2 tsp of dried fenugreek leaves, 2 tsp of garam masala, Half a tsp of salt, plain flour, 1 egg, a little milk
