Brought to you monthly by Cathy and her team at your local cafe
October/November 2013
It's on again - your chance to tackle Saddle-
back. The aim is to put Kiama on the map
for a fitness event, to challenge participants
physically and mentally, and to help raise
much needed funds for Kiama Rotary Club.
The race record was set in 2011 by David
Mainwaring who ran the 6km uphill course
in 27 minutes and 4 seconds, and the profile
of the event in the wider running community
is increasing each year.
The 600 metre uphill climb starts at Kiama
High School before continuing the rest of the
way to the summit (and we all know the
steepest bit is right at the end!). Participants
range from elite runners to joggers and walk-
ers. Anyone who makes it up there deserves
congratulations in my book!
Dave from Oxygen Fitness has been running
free training sessions for people taking advan-
tage of the early bird registration discount, so
some people are taking getting a personal best
very seriously. Definitely more character
building than Sydney’s Heartbreak Hill...
Details: Sun 13th Oct, 8am start from
Kiama High School, Saddleback Mountain Rd.
Free Shuttle buses back down.
Rego fee: Adults - $50, Kids Under 16 - $30

If you’ve been meaning to come to dinner this
year, you have two last chances.
25 October – South African I’ve been assured by our many South African customers there is some amazing fusion food to showcase, and been promised some great
recipes. Should be a great, if noisy, night.
22 November – Fifty Mile Dinner Our yearly homage to the wonderful produce
of our region. Who needs 100 miles?
$45 for three courses and coffee. Bookings essential.
Out & about Open gardens in Robertson Forgot to order the bacon from the butcher at
Burrawang the other week, so had the excuse
to enjoy an early morning trip up there. Such
a beautiful drive in Spring.
I noticed signs for an Open Garden weekend
on 12 and 13 October that I thought could be
of interest. Eight beautiful gardens, ranging
from smaller town gardens to larger country
gardens, will be open from 9.30 to 4.30.

It is a great community resource you can enjoy
at home.
Preserving our heritage It past me by when
it happened, but one
of our Boys' Club
(and member of the
Kiama Historical
Society) alerted me
to the news an area
of Pheasant Point
has received National
Trust listing.
According to the
Trust, the Pheasant
Point Heritage Pre-
cinct at Minnamurra, Devonshire and Fitzroy
streets has historic significance as its houses
and their streetscapes provide important
physical evidence of Kiama’s 19th century
history, particularly the Basalt Boom. They
are the only complete collection of quarry
workers' houses where there has been no
demolition or unsympathetic infill.
The precinct is part of the original lease of
farming land to William Gard, and its sub-
division in the 1870s. The picture above
shows 12 Fitzroy St, which differs from the
timber workers' cottages as it is an amalgam
of the original Gard buildings (including the
remains of the Figtree Inn in its grounds).
The Kiama Historical Society is based at the
Pilot's Cottage at Blowhole Point, and is keen
to welcome new members.
Freddie takes a bow
It is over 60 years since the
iconic Fred Addison opened
his garage, but he has only
recently hung up his over-
alls and retired. His move
to the country marks the
end of an era for genera-
tions of Kiama drivers.
If you’ve ever wondered
what was in his shed have
a look at this lovely video:

Find out more about living sustainably Last year's Future Fest Illawarra & Sustainable Living
Expo event was attended by around 3,000 people
keen to find out more about sustainable living
practices and green business products.
This year’s speakers will include the ABC's John
Gabriele talking about growing backyard vegetables,
local biodiversity expert Michael Fox speaking on
the importance of frogs in the urban environment,
and Tass Schmidt from Jamberoo Valley Farm talking
about producing and accessing local, sustainably
grown produce. Masterchef's Dalvinder Dhami will also run a cooking demonstration using home
grown produce.
There will be free plants for Kiama Council ratepayers, information stalls on waste, energy and
biodiversity, children's activities, lucky door prizes and free show bags.
The only way I seem to get to go to these things is by working there, so we are again operating the
canteen (featuring local produce, of course). See you there!
Details: Sunday 20 Oct, 10 – 3, Kiama Pavilion.
Entry by gold coin donation, with all proceeds to Lions.
Space is big, really big If you haven't taken the opportunity to visit Bundanon,
Arthur Boyd's extraordinary gift to the nation on the banks
of the Shoalhaven, then the yearly SITEWORKS open day
is a marvellously inspiring way to do so.
Now in its fifth year, SITEWORKS brings together inter-
disciplinary artists, scholars, activists, scientists and
environmental specialists to focus on a theme (in a similar
way to TEDex). Last year the focus was on the future of
food, this year it's the big one - space.
Think astronomy, star gazing, campfires, moon cycles, nocturnal animals, Indigenous cosmology
and UFOs. There will be talks and presentations about stars and emerging galaxies by leading
Australian astronomers, art performances, and the spectacular Celestial Radio, a yacht covered
with 60,000 mirrored tiles. It will sparkle on the river while broadcasting a soundscape created
especially for the event, with a special performance by Jeff Duff. And it is all for free.
This is the first year camping has been allowed, to make the most of the night theme. Look out for
our daughter Margot if you manage to get one of the last camp spots.
Details: 4pm to midnight, with astronomy talks starting at 7pm.
Camping spots $25/tent (must be booked ahead of time)
Follow the signs to Bundanon from the traffic lights just north of the Nowra Bridge.
Please note: While we try to get everything right, we are only human and cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions.
Choirs rule, OK

featuring Kiama's own intermezzo Angela
Quinn, will launch the new performance
space at Christ Church Point Ministry Centre.

Christmas on the horizon We've already taken bookings for Christmas
events, so if you or your group require
catering or a venue for your festive get-
together give us a call soon to avoid disap-
pointment. As is our tradition, we will be
making puddings and cakes again this year,
as well as taking orders for hams from
Maugers Meats at Burrawang. Get planning!
Monochromania Cafe regular (and cover girl of our flyer),
Paula Schiller Gowans, has an exhibition
of her work in an art bar in Wollongong
throughout October. The fascinating mono-
chrome works are inspired by old photos.
Details: Alibi, 76 Crown St, Wollongong.
