Afifah loves writing and colouring activities. If I ask her anytime what she likes to do, she would say ‘ I want to do writing.’ Very often she comes to me and asks, “ Teacher Rosy, can I do writing?” while the other children were doing Montessori activities or some other activities. At An-Nur we have a variety of literacy and numeracy worksheets that children love to work with. So, the other day when Afifah came to me and asked for some writing work, I got a few different kinds of work sheets out for Afifah to choose from and Afifah chose the letter ‘Dd’ to work with. This worksheet includes tracing the letters: capital and lower case, read words, find out and circle all the ‘d’s, write missing letters and last of all colour the pictures. Afifah knows what to do, because she has done Aa, Bb and Cc before. Afifah just sat with her work and concentrated on writing. Before she started colouring she asked me, “Teacher Rosy, can I colour this like a rainbow?” She was sitting and chatting with other children while working on her own worksheet. Afifah is such a cheerful and friendly person that everyone enjoys her company. Throughout these activities Afifah was improving her literacy skills such as: learning to read words, recognising particular letters and circle those, expanding vocabulary, improving hand writing by tracing letters, developing hand eye co-ordination and creativity. What’s next? We will ensure that Afifah gets opportunities to improve her literacy skills, such as practice letter sounds and practice writing three letter phonic words.
