We’re here to help support you on your faith journey, so you can find

true peace, happiness, and purpose in life. If you would like to join one of

our parishes, contact any staff member, and we will be honored to

officially welcome you home!

New-member registration forms are also available in the church

entrances and on our website.

Please contact Deacon John in the parish office to schedule the baptism and the baptism preparation class.

Congratulations on your engagement! Please contact Fr. Reker at least 6

months in advance to begin preparation.

If you or a family member is homebound or in the hospital and would like a

pastoral visit, please notify the office.

Sometimes we move rather quickly from place to place. We usually choose the most direct or fastest route to our destination. Every now and then, it is good to get off the fast lane and take a meandering path to where we want to go. This happened to me last week. When our annual priests’ meeting ends in Okoboji, I usually connect with a few of my family members who live in SW Minnesota and SE South Dakota. I had a little extra time on Wednesday afternoon, so I took the back roads from the (“so-called”) Iowa Great Lakes to my hometown of Worthington. It was a beautiful afternoon for a trip down memory lane.

As I crossed the state line and headed north by northwest, I drove by the apple orchard that we used to visit when I was a child. We could enjoy an apple or two as we picked the amount my parents wanted to bring home, but the best part was the end result – homemade apple pie or crisp. I could almost smell and taste it as I drove by the apple trees. Next on the path was a small lake where my Dad would take us fishing, an activity that did not appeal to me because it was not active enough. I wasn’t much of a fish-eater in those days, perhaps partly due to the type often caught, bullheads. As I drove into the big city of Worthington, now over 12,000 inhabitants, I decided to visit the Catholic cemetery where my parents are buried. After visiting their graves and saying a prayer, I checked to see who was nearby and remembered the different parishioners with whom we worshipped. I found the grave of my boyhood pastor, Msgr. J. Stanley Hale, and was pleasantly surprised to see that an aunt and uncle were buried nearby. I was grateful that I had a little time to meander over that hallowed ground.

My sister wasn’t home yet, so I drove past places that no longer exist – the drive-in theater and the root beer stand – on my way downtown. I hadn’t driven down Main Street for ages; it was interesting to see what had changed and a few stores that still remain. I recalled my part-time job in a downtown store and the people with whom I worked. No trip down memory lane in my hometown is complete without driving around part of Lake Okabena. Times spent with friends and classmates came to mind, especially when I saw the band shell in Chautauqua Park (but no popcorn wagon!) and the beach where I first took swimming lessons. Given the bright, but cool day, I headed toward the golf course to see if nine holes might be a possibility; it was and I walked a slightly soggy course in the company of past rounds with my Dad, siblings and friends. After visiting with my sister for a while, we headed to meet other family members in Luverne and took the “old highway” as far as Adrian so that we could stop at the cemetery to visit the graves of my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and a good priest friend who died 20 years ago, Father Jim Timm. No, it wasn’t a very “productive” afternoon, but quite renewing. Perhaps you might want to get off the beaten path and choose a memory lane.

Sincerely in Christ,

P.S. Our sister parish in Haiti, St. Lucy, has certainly been in my thoughts and prayers; Thursday evening I received a short video of some of the hurricane damage, but no word from the pastor yet. You can check it out on our Facebook page, which has a link on our website. More when I hear from Father Harold.

St. Joseph the Worker is still $15,494 away from meeting their CMA goal of $36,600. $21,106 or 57.67%

of their goal has been raised to date. Out of the over 600 families at SJW only 90 have donated so far. If you

are able, please make a contribution to the CMA. Any percentage of SJW’s goal that is not reached by the end

of the campaign is taken out of the parish’s general operating fund. Thank you!

Congratulations to Holy Family

for meeting and exceeding their

Catholic Ministries Appeal goal of

$10,270. To date they have

contributions/pledges of $10,620!

What did you learn today … Luke 17:11-19

The lepers suffered from the disease of leprosy, now known as Hansen’s disease, which causes deformity with the loss of limbs and sometimes blindness. They also suffered because they were outcasts, who were driven away from their homes and families to live far away from villages and towns. Their lives were miserable and their suffering was very great. Jesus took pity on them and told them to go and show themselves to the priest. The priest was the person who decided whether their leprosy had gone and gave them permission to live with their families again. They showed how much they believed in Jesus by setting off at once and trusting him to cure them. Talk about it … What did one of the lepers do when he realized he had been cured? Do you think that Jesus was pleased that one said “thank you”? Do you remember to say thank you for your many gifts?

impact, but putting all the bottles together throughout the Diocese will help a number of women with the financial boost they need to choose adoption or parenting rather than abortion for their unborn child.
