SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: OCTOBER 22-23 MISSION SUNDAY COLLECTION: I know! We just had a Mission Collection but they are different. This collec-tion benefits Home Missions. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

The previous Mission Collection was for support of Missions abroad. Thank you for your generous spirit! OCTOBER 28-29 LOCAL CHARITIES COLLECTION: Helping the poor in our midst with basic needs.

REFLECTION: BEARING THE RIGHT KIND OF FRUIT Today’s readings focus our attention on vineyards. Isaiah’s song concerning his friend’s vineyard begins with inspiring and poetic images of an idyllic vineyard where the choicest harvest is expected. Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries out to God, asking that God once again take care of the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The parable told in today’s Gospel offers a stern warning that those who commit treachery in the hopes of attaining person-al wealth will be “put . . . to a wretched death” (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his listen-ers not to act like the murderous tenants in the vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: The vineyard of the LORD is the house of Israel (Isaiah 5:1-7).

Psalm: The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Isra-el (Psalm 80).

Second Reading: God’s peace will guard your hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6-9).

Gospel: The kingdom of God will be given to those who will produce its fruit (Matthew 21:33-43) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights re-served.

Bishop Edward C. Malesic Statement on Las Vegas Shooting “It is with tragic irony that the Catholic Church’s observance of Respect Life Month begins with the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas. My prayers, and those of all in the Diocese of Greensburg, are with the victims of this senseless tragedy. We also pray for their families and loved ones. We can never become numbed to the seemingly endless stream of outra-geous crimes that show a lack of re-spect for our fellow human beings. We continue to teach and proclaim that every human person is created in God’s image and has the right to life. Although the event in Las Vegas is deeply disturbing for all of us, we will continue to pray that the light of God’s love will reach into the darkest places in our nation and our world. As Jesus said, ‘Be not afraid.’”
