Dear Attendants,

Welcome to the 8th annual Foothills Invitational at North Iredell High School. We are so happy you chose to make today part of your 2019 competition schedule. Th is event is meant to be a celebration of all of your hard work and dedication to the marching arts. All students have put in hours of rehearsal, practice, and performance to bring their shows to the competitive level you see today and their work should be celebrated.

Our goal is for your band to have a positive performance experience. Our panel of judges has been selected to provide excellent feedback for your groups and we want you to have a stress free experience. Let me or a NIHS Band Parent know if there is anything we can do to make your day more enjoyable.

MEET THE JUDGES

Barry Howard is the Director of Athletic Bands at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC, and the Director of Middle School Bands at Carmel Christian School in Matthews, NC. He is also the owner and senior attorney of Howard Law in Indian Trail, NC. Mr. Howard earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wingate University in 1989, the Master of Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina in 1994, and the degree of Juris Doctor from the Charlotte School of Law in May of 2011.  He taught both middle and high school band in North Carolina for 19 years. He served as the Associate Director of Bands at Piedmont Middle and High Schools in Monroe, NC from 1989-1992, and at East Union Middle School and Forest Hills High School in Marshville, NC from 1989 - 1999, and as the Director of Bands at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, NC from 1999-2008. 

Mr. Howard is a member of the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA), has served as the District President for the Northwest NC District Bandmasters Association, and was a charter member of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association’s Marching Band committee, which was responsible for the creation of the NCBA’s evaluation instrument for marching band. In the past he

has been honored to serve as a judge for both marching and concert band competitions across North Carolina and as a guest clinician for All-County band events in Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland, Forsyth, Gaston, Mecklenburg, and Union Counties in North Carolina and Carroll and Grayson Counties in Virginia.

Mr. Jimeson is a graduate of Appalachian State University where he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 2007. He is in his 12th year as Director of Bands at Davie County High School where he serves as the conductor of the Davie High School Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, War Eagle Regiment, and Jazz Ensembles. Since Mr. Jime-son has been at Davie High School, the band has received 15 Superior ratings at the NC State Music Performance Assessment. Under his direction, the DHS Wind Ensemble was awarded the “President’s Cup” at the U.S. Army Band’s National Concert Band Invitational in 2016. Mr. Jimeson was selected as Davie High School Teacher of the Year in 2013-2014 and currently serves as the chair of the Fine Arts department. Prior to coming to Davie High School, he served as the Director of Bands at Forbush High School in East Bend, North Carolina and at Yadkinville School in Yadkinville, North Carolina. In addition to his duties at Davie High School, Mr. Jimeson serves as an active clinician and an adjudicator across North Carolina. He has served the North Carolina Bandmasters Association as the NW District President, treasur-er, and the Immediate-Past Chairman. His professional affi liations include National Associa-tion for Music Educators, North Carolina Music Educators Association, American School Band Directors Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In his time away from school, Mr. Jimeson loves spending time with his sons, Maddox and Ryland, and wife, Karen.

Jeff Kleiber has been part of the Wake County Public School System (Raleigh, NC) since August of 2010. Currently, he is an assistant principal at Durant Road Middle School, aft er completing his Mas-ter of School Administration degree from Th e University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018. Prior to his current appointment, he served as the band director at Reedy Creek Magnet Middle School in Cary from 2010-2017. Also, he served as the band director at Carroll County High School in Virginia from 2007-2010. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from East Tennessee State University in 2007 and earned a Master of Music degree in music education from Th e University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2012. He was the recipient of the Cary Chamber of Commerce’s Honor a Teacher Award in 2013 and 2017. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he previously served both as the WCPSS band department co-chair and as a mentor teacher with the Beginning Teacher program.

MEET THE JUDGES

Being in love percussion and education his whole life, Brian started working with high school and college battery percussion sections and front ensembles. In 2018, Brian became an interna-tionally known online drum educator and drum clinician. Intrigued with how social media and online teaching can impacted the drumming community, Brian is releasing an online drum edu-cation subscription service on October 21st. From listening to the needs and desires of others and what they want to learn and strive to achieve in their careers, Brian will be releasing thou-sands of online lessons and weekly talks on how to advance in your career. Brian currently lives in Nashville, TN with his wife Jennifer and son Cooper. Brian writes for high school and college marching band shows and drum cadences for schools that are grade 1 all the way up to grade 5.

Courtlyn Reeves is an experienced drum major and clinician originally from West Jeff erson, North Carolina. He was a drum major for the Ashe County High School Husky Vanguard Marching Band, which was under the direction of the late Scott Turnmyre. He attended college at Wake For-est University and continued serving high schools as a drum major coach.

Courtlyn won numerous fi rst place awards at regional band contests and also won fi rst place awards on the national stage at the Toyota Gator Bowl and Autozone Liberty Bowl. He coached drum majors who took top honors at numerous regional and national competitions including the BCS National Championship contest.

In addition to coaching drum majors, Courtlyn has conducted leadership trainings for various levels of management at Wake Forest University, Teach For America, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and two consulting fi rms. Professionally, Courtlyn has served as a teacher, program director, dean of instruction, assistant principal, and principal. Currently a resident of Charlotte,

NC, Courtlyn Reeves is the Principal at Greenway Park Creative Arts & Sciences Magnet School in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Reeves is honored to serve as the drum major adjudicator at the Foothills Invitational for the eighth year.

Michelle Beekman was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio where she was active in both marching band and winter guard. Aft er graduating from Miami University in 2001, she began instructing color guard at several Northwest Ohio high schools. Michelle and her husband moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 2004 and she began assisting with fall guard and winter guard at several triad schools. Michelle was employed with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system with the Exceptional Children’s department for fi ft een years and is now staying at home raising two active young children.
