John Foster upon the death of his

daughter, Susan Featherston.

Our family wishes to express our deepest

thanks and gratitude for your many prayers,

gifts, and thoughts we received from our

church family on the loss of my daughter,

Susan. A church or house of prayer

functions on the heart of its good Christian

members. May God Bless us always.

Dear Rev. Sykes,

I would like to thank my church family for

the $300 Mary Hadley Leath scholarship. It

is a big help and I used it to purchase my

books. I’m really grateful that the Leaths

were so generous in creating this scholar-

ship.

Love, Christian Deane

Thank you, FUMC of Rockingham, for

your fabulous support of the UMW’s salad

buffet held in September. Because of you,

UMW is able to fund various mission

projects. THANK YOU! See you again

next year on September 19th!

Coming soon……Our Annual Stewardship Campaign! The Stewardship Team; Chair, G.R. Kindley, Vice-Chair, Ron Ballard, and team members; Ann Crotts, Rachel Ellwanger, Myers Waddell, Sandy Ridley, Bob Marshall have been meeting to offer prayers and planning for our 2012 cam-

paign, Relay Race for Christ. The basis for our campaign this year comes from the following scripture text;

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,

and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,” (Hebrews 12:1-2a) NIV

We will use the race theme to deliver a baton containing commitment cards to each member family in the church. Neighbor-

hood groupings have been put together so the baton can be delivered from house to house and then back to the church. Begin now to prayerfully consider your commitment and be ready to fill out the commitment card when it arrives at your house.

The schedule for the campaign will be:

Date Sermon Topic October 14 Prayers Baton Send off in worship with prayers October 21 Presence Laity Sunday October 28 Gifts Batons returned and prayed over during worship November 4 Service All Saints Sunday – we will read the names of our deceased members November 11 Witness Covered dish lunch to celebrate

A Message from Rev. Allison Farrah

The theme of our Stewardship Campaign is centered on the first two verses of Hebrews Chapter 12.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and

let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…”

This is also Scripture that we have been studying in the book, Faith from the Back Side, in Tuesday Morning Bible Study. The author,

J. Ellsworth Kalas, reminds us of the dramatic picture painted by the writer of Hebrews in these verses. If you just watched the Olympics in

recent months or get excited over athletic events, you will relate to what the writer is describing. He sees the present generation of those who

believe in Christ as runners in a grand race and a great cloud of witnesses who cheer us on. We are urged to “lay aside every weight and the

sin that clings so closely” so that we can “run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our

faith.” The Letter to the Hebrews was written at a time when Christians were being persecuted and when many were tempted to give up on the

Christian faith. The writer wants them- and us- to know that we are being cheered on by the faithful who have preceded us, and Jesus has led

the way. All of us who are believers in Christ are part of this grand race. We are not in the grandstands or on the sidelines! We are on the

course with our eyes fixed on Jesus! The race is for those who have, not a blind faith, but a faith with extraordinary vision and steadfast

obedience.

This year my daughter, Mary Catherine, is running Cross Country. I was not very familiar with the sport but I’ve learned a lot. During each

meet, the runners run 3.2 miles. It is a run of endurance, perseverance and focus. I notice how intent the serious runners are about keeping

their eyes fixed on the finish line, allowing the markers to keep them on course. The goal is to stay on course, power through and finish

strong. As believers in Christ… as the CHURCH, our goal should be the same. As we keep our eyes on Jesus, we are able to run with perse-

verance the race that has been marked for us. We are grateful for our friends and family in Christ, mentors, teachers, and ministers who help

get us back on course when we lose our way, and we are thankful for those who have gone before us, who, through their faithfulness, exempli-

fied what CHURCH should be and are now cheering us on. With such legacies of faith and with the strength of Christ, we can stay on course,

power through, and finish strong. As faithful stewards, we are paving the way for those we will follow us. We are carrying the torch of faith

that symbolizes we can never give up! With perseverance, we must boldly and courageously live out the call of Christ. I encourage us to stay

in the race, to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, to power through in our giving and our living, to pave the way for those who will follow, and have

confidence in knowing that we WILL finish strong with the hope and promise we have in Christ our Lord. Lace up your running shoes and get

on course! Church, we have a race to run!

Our FUMC Open House and Community Outreach day –

otherwise known as the HOLY SMOKE BBQ and Music

Festival – is Saturday, October 6, from 11-4. Admission

is free all day and everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair

and stay. We’ll have BBQ and hot dog plates ($5) and a

variety of musical groups on stage. The children’s area will

have a bounce house/slide, corn hole games, face painting

and playground. Several church ministry groups will have

members present to inform attendees of their activities.

It’s a great day for folks to visit FUMC, meet us and learn

about all that we have to offer! Invite your friends,

neighbors and everyone else to be here on Saturday!
