Welcome

But for me it is good to be near God. — Psalm 73:28

We have no greater privilege than to draw near to God. We come to him through the merit of Christ crucified. We come by the power of the Holy Spirit. And we come with God’s promise that he will draw near to us (James 4:8).

If your faith has not yet come to rest in Christ, and if God is awakening in your heart a desire to take the next step, please use one of the prayer cards in the pew rack to contact the pastor or speak to him as you leave the sanctuary. A husband and wife team will also be available at the front of the sanctuary following the service to speak with anyone interested in exploring what it means to know Jesus Christ or to join this church.

May our gracious Lord draw near to you wonderfully in this service today.

THE MORNING SERVICESReformation Sunday

October 31, 20108:30 and 11 a.m.

(† Indicates the congregation standing)

The Theme: Reformative Grace

The Choral Prelude - Let All the World in Every Corner Sing ................arr. GiardinereChancel Choir

(The congregation is invited to read Colossians 3:12-17 page 1834 in the pew Bible) Let all the world in every corner sing, “My God and King!”

The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly:The earth is not too low, his praises there may grow.

The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out;But above all the heart must bear the longest part.

† The Peace

† The Call to Worship .....................................................Isaiah 41:1; Lamentations 5:21

Let the peoples renew their strength; let them approach, let us together draw near.

Restore us to yourself, O LORD that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Let us worship God.

† The Confession of Faith .................................................. Heidelberg Catechism Q. 60

Q. How are you right with God?

Only by true faith in Jesus Christ.Even though my conscience accuses me

of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandmentsand of never having kept any of them,

and even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless,

without my deserving it at all,out of sheer grace,

God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ,

as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner,as if I had been as perfectly obedientas Christ was obedient for me.

All I need to do is to accept this gift of God with a believing heart.

The Old Testament Lesson ............................................................................Isaiah 12:1-6 page 1078 in the pew Bible

The Response

The grass withers and the flowers fall,

But the Word of our God stands forever.

The Personal Confession of Sin

6

The Corporate Confession of Sin (Please kneel)

O Lord God, eternal and almighty Father, we confess and acknowledge most sincerely before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners, conceived and born in sin and corruption. We are prone to do evil, incapable of any good, and in our depravity we break your holy commandments continuously. Therefore we deserve your righteous judgment. Father, we are grieved that we have offended you and we plead for your grace to relieve our distress. O God and Father most gracious and full of compassion, have mercy upon us in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Remove our sins and stains. Increase in us every day the grace of your Holy Spirit; that we might be brought to true repentance, that we might mortify our sins, and that we might produce the fruits of righteousness which are pleasing to you. Through the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Adapted from John Calvin’s Form of Church Prayers – 1545

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace ...............................................Ephesians 1:7-8; 2:8-9

In Jesus Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

The Offertory - Psalm 46 ........................................................................................... Beck

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth be removed and the mountains be carried away to the very midst of the sea.Though the waters roar and the mountains quake at his majesty.

There is a river the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God.The holy place of the tabernacle, the holy place of the Lord.God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; He shall defend her from the night through the dawn. The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Judah is our refuge.

Be still and know that I am God.I will be exalted above all nations,I will be exalted upon the earth. The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Judah is our refuge.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. His everlasting love will guide us from above. All glory to his name, from age to age the same:His Kingdom is forever; forever and ever and ever.Amen, amen, alleluia. Amen, amen, amen.

Offering and Prayer of Dedication

Offertory - Lord Dissolve My Frozen Heart ...................................................MurphyAmy Patton

Lord, dissolve my frozen heart by the beams of love divine. This alone can warmth impart to dissolve a heart like mine.

The love of Christ passes knowledge, the love of Christ eases fear. The love of Christ hits a man’s heart; it pierces him like a spear.

O that love, how vast it is. Vast it seems, though known in part.Strange indeed, if love like this should not melt the frozen heart.

Savior, let thy love be felt. Let its power be felt by me.Then my frozen heart shall melt, melt in love, O Lord, to thee.
