PASTOR’S NOTE

One of my brother priests recently shared about his daily examination of conscience. He mindfully asks the question: “Was I a divider or was I a uniter today?” I found this question to be very provocative and right on point. In a Church, world, and country that is tragically divided -even in our own families and communities- this is an important question to ask. I believe all of us, if we are truly honest with ourselves, would acknowledge that we have been a cause of division at times. I know I have! This division has only one origin and that is the Evil One. Since the beginning with our first parents Adam and Eve, Satan has been sowing seeds of division. His lies severed the communion that they had with God and with each other. The Evil One continues to propagate division to the present day, and none of us need to look very far to see his handiwork. However, this does not have to be so. All of us can choose to be unifiers rather than to be dividers.

The readings this Sunday illustrate how God intended humanity to live in harmony and unity specifically revealed in marriage. When God created the first human being, Adam, the Creator did not want him to be alone. Since humanity is made in the very image and likeness of God, we must be in communion with others because the one God Himself is a communion of love between the three Divine Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In other words, we cannot be truly human without another. As one of my professors would say, “one human is no human.” Marriage is the highest revelation of this truth. Spouses mirror, although imperfectly, the mysterious communion of the most Holy Trinity. It is from the sacred institution of marriage that spouses give themselves to each other and create new life. This is why Jesus teaches that marriage is not some mere contract of an exchange of property; rather, marriage is a Sacrament – a visible sign of an invisible grace.

Whether married, single, widowed, or celibate, we find our humanity in our relationships with others. One human is no human. Friendship, fraternity, and family fill the void of loneliness and isolation. Let us strive to avoid being pawns of the Evil One, who sows division and discord instead of unity. Jesus prayed this on the night before he died: “Father, let them be one as You and I are one.” Let us answer His prayer by building and preserving unity, for this is the work of God.

They are making a prayer (by Archbishop Fulton Sheen) card available for you to pick up after the weekend Masses. This simple and beautiful prayer can be prayed every day for 9 months for a baby you “spiritually adopt” that is in danger of an abortion. At the end of 9 months, you can optionally donate money or a gift to your local crisis pregnancy center in honor of the unborn baby that you spiritually adopted.

— MATTHEW 25:3

Are you or someone you know unable to attend Mass and receive Communion due to an illness, disability, or hardship? Our SPX Homebound Ministry supports parishioners unable to attend Mass by visiting and bringing Holy Communion to them. Homebound Ministers make weekly visits to private homes, care centers and other living accommodations in our SPX area. We invite you to contact the Parish Office (www.stpiusx.org) or (503) 644-5264 to arrange for a visit.

Are you interested in becoming a Homebound Minister? Volunteer ministers make one visit per week on a day of their choosing.
