PAGE 3 Trigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION

The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylo-nian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God’s love and care for us. “Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weep-ing, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm 126:5–6). Al-though God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the prom-ise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God.

Question of the Week

First Reading — I will lead the people to brooks of wa-ter, on a level road, so that none shall stumble (Jeremiah 31:7-9). Psalm — The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading — It was not Christ who glorified him-self, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you (Hebrews 5:1-6). Gospel — Immediately the blind man received his sight and followed Jesus on the way (Mark 10:46-52). Question for Children: What would you like to ask Jesus for? Question for Adults: What does it mean for you to “see”? Are there blind spots in your life?

Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be be-atified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contem-plative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedic-tine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the com-munity in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at www.tyburnconvent.org.uk.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s readings begin with a joyous reunion of the blind, the lame, and those who departed in tears. All are consoled and guided. The psalm celebrates the return of captives, filled with laughter, their lives transformed from weeping and sorrow to rejoicing. The reading from Hebrews reflects upon the Old Testament priesthood and the Jerusalem Temple, and contrasts it with the priesthood of Christ. The priest’s glory comes from being, like all of us, a child of God. In the Gospel a blind man, crying out to Jesus, is rebuked, told to be quiet. Nevertheless he per-sists. Jesus calls to him, and his request is simple and straightforward: “I want to see.” Jesus recognizes his faith, returns his sight, and sends him on his way. His way, it turns out, is to follow Jesus. The blind, the lame, the sorrowing, captives, and priests who, like us, are weak—are not successful by worldly measure. Yet they are the ones whom God seeks.

PAGE 7 Trigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Be a Trusted Resource if a Child Dis-closes Abuse Parents are in a unique position to know about not only their own children, but their children’s friends. If you are a trusted parent, your child’s friend may come to you with secrets. What do you do if a child tells you about abuse? As an adult, it’s critical that you remain calm, and don’t overreact. Child victims are often frightened and confused, and your con-fusion and anger does not help their situation.Your concern and support, however, will affirm the child in important ways and can help begin the healing process for a child victim who has suffered at the hands of a predator. To learn more about steps to take if a child tells you about abuse, email [email protected].

Greetings from Allendale, Michigan! I cannot believe that it has already been a few months since I left Los Angeles and moved to Michigan. I have been thoroughly impressed with the students I have encoun-tered on this campus. I can see how the Lord is working in them and how they each desire to grow in relation-ship with Christ. Over the first few weeks it seemed that everyone who I med desired to grow in their faith and many have already made a commitment to spend more time this year dedicated to Christ. I have been able to teach some men how to altar serve and lector at Mass. The Catholic group her has over 50 students who come to their weekly activities on Thursday nights. For the month of September they focused on the them of authentic friendships. I gave a testimony about my experience with friendships. Many students shared how they were really inspired by the testimony to seek virtuous friendships. Please continue to keep my teammates and I in your prayers. I can see the wonderful things God is doing for the students of this campus and I know that this because of your prayers and support. Thank you once again

for all the support you have given me. This mission is not possible without your generosity. Know that I keep you all in my prayers daily and please let me know if there is anything you would like me to pray for you about.

Community News FIVE INGREDIENTS TO CREATE A HAPPY FAMILY

By: Fr. Marco Reyes 1. Adoration.

• Individually and together as a family, we must love God above all things, obey His commandments, and treat others with kindness out of love for Him

• Christ must be the King and Sovereign Lord of the

Family (not the T.V., the computer, career, money, or any other thing). Pray to Him daily, study His word and worship Him together as a family on Sundays and holy days.

2. Appreciation

• Don’t wait until your love ones are dead before you recognize their worth and express your appreciation and gratitude!

• Try to see each member of your family is a unique

child of God. Realize that he or she is a means of sanctification – an opportunity for you to practice the virtues of patience, charity, kindness, and mercy so that you can become holy.

3. Affirmation

• Instead of being discouraging and constantly critical, be encouraging! When you have to criticize, try to sandwich every criticism between two layers of praise.

• Look at and confirm the good in others, not just their

faults. Be supportive – build up rather than tear down! 4. Attention

• Make time to listen to, help, and play with your fam-ily. Put the needs of your family first whenever possi-ble.

• Be ready to help before being asked. Remember that life can at times be very difficult for all of us. We all need to receive and give understanding, love, and sup-port.

5. Affection

• Show by your kind words and respectful actions, show each other genuine affection

• Do little things – even mundane household chores –

with great love for God and those you love.

• Never, never, never be rude, discourteous, sarcastic, cynical or disrespectful.

A Pro Life Rosary for the Unborn Every Tuesday at 6:30pm inside church before mass

Many lives depend on us advocating for them!

Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pray daily for your spiritually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happi-ness with him/her.

Two Months: Your baby is making progress developing all of his/her external features and internal organs. Your baby’s brain is func-tioning at 40 days. Her mother can hear his/her heartbeat now on an ultrasonic stethoscope. Your baby’s milk teeth buds are present at 6 ½ weeks, and it has been reported that a two‐month old baby can suck their thumb. From this moment onward, your spiritually adopted baby grows and refines their body, but everything they need to survive once they are born is already present by the end of the eighth week.
