THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE Gospel Reading October 28, 2018

Mark 10:46-52

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me." And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, "Son of David, have pity on me." Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you." He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see." Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." Immediately he received his sight. and followed him on the way.

Last week most of the staff and I attended the Amazing Parish Conference in Milwaukee. In the past this conference started with many suggestions on improving parishes, but there was one thing missing. They want the pastors to build a parish leadership team, not only to advise him on the running of the parish and its many ministries, but who will work together to accomplish the Mission. Pat Lencioni is a well respected author and consultant on organizational health. He led this conference and his love of the Church is very evident in his passion for the Mission of the Church.

The first step is for the pastor to commit to this, and going into the conference I was sure it would be a good thing but, without the "buy-in" of the staff nothing would happen. We didn't come back with a thousand idea of how to change our parish. We came back with a determination to form a healthy team. This means praying together and for each other, learning more about each other and building trust.

I don't know about you, but I have noticed a large increase in the number of young adult, teenagers and children at Mass. I believe a lot of it is due to moving our formation programs to Sunday between the 8:30 and 11:30 Masses. There has been a lot of congestion in the parking lot, with most of it due to the month long parking lot project (it was supposed to be a one week project).

We have formulated a plan that will almost double the number of handicap spaces on the south side of the church (when relined in the spring). The north most entrance will become an enter only. The south side between the church and cemetery will be exit only, as well as the exit south of the parish offices. This new pattern will start next weekend (see insert map). The parking lot will not be finished until spring, we still have a finish layer of asphalt to be laid. The drainage issues had to be resolved, which added a long time to the project.

Reflecting on the Word Bartimaeus was blind so, not being able to work for a living, he was begging at the side of the road. Imagine sitting along a dusty road in complete darkness. Everyday you hear the voices and footsteps as people pass by, and anxiously listen for the sound of a coin landing on the ground beside you. One day the crowd sounds different - excited, louder. What’s going on? He must have wondered. “Jesus is coming,” someone tells Bartimaeus. Jesus, the one who has been working miracles, is coming his way. He can’t see Jesus, so he begins shouting to get his attention, and he keeps shouting even when others tell him to stop. He knows he needs Jesus! When you need Jesus, don’t give up seeking him. Sometimes we can be in darkness, but remember that Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus tells Bartimaeus that his faith is what saved him. Have faith. Seek Jesus. And if you have to shout for him on occasion...well, what’s stopping you?

On the way home from Mass What part of this story really speaks to you?

Living the Word Without our sense of sight, our sense of hearing is sharpened. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can be safe, and sit either in the dark or with your eyes closed. Do this for a minute as you get accustomed to listening without your eyesight. If you feel relaxed now, go ahead and call to Jesus in your mind and heart. You may be tempted to fill the silence by doing all the talking, but in the stillness, try also to listen. Share this experience as a family.

The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes

were our topic in RCIA, last Sunday.

Ray Herpe walked the class through the

Commandments and explained why our Lord

had to give the commandments to Moses not

once , but twice! (Read Exodus 24:12, &

Exodus 32 and 34)

Jesus wanted

the crowds, just

like he wants

us, to live

happy and

fulfilled lives.

He wanted it so

much that He

gave all of us,

"His Answer

Sheet" on how to make this happen, and that

my friends is The Beatitudes.

Bishop Barron's (Word on Fire) homily on the

Beatitudes, takes each Beatitude and explains

them in language that we understand.

Example.: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for

theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

The Greek word makarios, means blessed,

lucky, happy. Happy are the people who

empty themselves, who let Jesus take up

residence in them. That is what it means to be

poor in spirit.

ALL SAINTS All Saints' Day is an important holy day of the Catholic Church which we will celebrate on November 1. This is the day dedicated to all the saints of the Church - in particular those who are not officially recognized as such! We probably have some idea of all that is necessary for people to be officially named as Saints. It is generally a lengthy process, which we call canonization. We may have noticed how many of those canonized are religious sisters or priests - and how few are “regular folks” - farmers, housewives, teachers, businessmen and so forth. It is easy to get the idea that this is because people called to secular life or marriage are unworthy of sainthood. No!

Undoubtedly the prevalence of vowed and ordained saints is due simply to the fact that the process of working for the cause of someone to be canonized, is complicated, time-consuming and much more easily accomplished within the organized environment of a religious order or diocese.

Every officially canonized saint has their own “feast day”. On most days, in fact, the feasts of several saints are celebrated. These feasts, spread throughout the year, make up what is known as the Church’s “sanctoral calendar”. We are familiar with St. Patrick’s Day, St. Valentine’s Day, etc. It is great fun to celebrate the feasts of the lesser-known saints throughout the year! Our parish library has books about saints’ days; you can also find much information online - one good site is: https://www.catholic.org/saints/

Back to All Saints Day. All Saints Day is a day to recognize those who are worthy of veneration, who lived holy and pious

lives, but who were never officially named a saint of the Church. You may know such people! You may be related to such people!

Irving Houle, from Wilson, Michigan is a recognized mystic and visionary. You can search

his name on google, and learn more about him!

Rhoda Wise lived in Ohio with her husband and daughter. She converted to Catholicism and after two miraculous healings, her mission to lead others to Jesus began. A book has been written about her heroic life.

Do not doubt that you, too, and your children are called to be saints!

By 18 weeks in your mother's womb, you could swim, somersault, suck your thumb, and even cover your ears if you heard loud music.

From your first moments of existence, you had all the DNA that would determine your sex, facial features, physique, and the color of your skin, hair, and eyes. At 24 days, your heart began beating. By 8 weeks, all your organs were present, and your unique fingerprints were forming. If you'd been born just 23 weeks after conception, your chance of survival would be 50-80 percent; by 25 weeks, it's over 90 percent.

Life in poverty

We often receive gifts of all of kinds in Outreach. No, the gifts are not for us, but for those who society considers disposable.

People who are affluent often cannot understand why the poor are poor or why people don’t raise themselves up by their

bootstraps. I have learned through working with the poor that they have no understanding of our cultural norms. I have learned

that what we take for common sense often isn’t common among the poor.

You see we breathe in our culture without even knowing we are learning or absorbing the information. We learn how to speak

and how to listen. We learn how to act in an interview and even to be clean and wear appropriate clothing. Everything we see

daily is absorbed into our consciousness.

This isn’t the case for many of the poor. They have never had an example of working a 40 hour week. They do not understand

that if you go to an interview dressed inappropriately you will not get the job; or even taking a shower before the interview

might be a good Idea. Their ability to choose the proper words are definitely challenged. They speak what they have learned

throughout their lives and know nothing better. These people do not consider planning ahead, they have a day to day existence.

There really isn’t anything to look forward to tomorrow, as they understand the world.

Poverty is what they know and what they expect. Generational poverty is all they know. We try not to feed into the ‘hand out

system’. What they need is to learn how to function, how to get jobs and how to dress, speak and carry themselves. They need

to learn how to function in this culture. Handouts are not the answer training and education are. Over the summer we had men

training and learning the trades. They all found work. We need to find another group of men and women, train them also.

In short they need a cultural education. That happens by personally being there with them. They need job training to

prepare them to go out and seek work. We have to give them the tools (Knowledge and skills) to believe they can do it.

Sister Carol and St. Luke’s Center is an example of a way to change lives.

An Education in Faith Happy Fall! My name is Mrs. Wright. This is the be-ginning of my ninth year as technology teacher here at St. John School. You’ll find me teaching students in our computer lab, in classrooms helping with technolo-gy issues, or in the middle school teaching 7th Social Studies. In my free time I enjoy long walks, cooking, reading, and playing the piano.

During the first two months of school, all of our stu-dents have been very busy in the Computer Lab. All grades have learned about how to stay safe, both in the Real World and Online. Our Kindergarten students have also been trying their hand at Mousing Around, Tux Paint and Fuzz Bugs to perfect their mouse skills. The 1st through 3rd grade students have begun re-viewing the tools they used last year in Microsoft Word along with learning how to type on the home row keys.

Our 4th and 5th graders have learned how to log in to their Google Apps for Education account, both on the laptops in the computer lab and on the Chromebooks in their classroom, and have been working on learning about all the tools available in Google Docs (a word processing program). They have also been work-ing on their typing skills.

The 6th graders are learning about the best ways to do searches on Google, skills that will come in handy for years to come. In 7th grade, students are collaborating on an If-Then Story using Google Docs and Google Slides, while 8th graders are investigating careers using our Career Cruising program. The middle school students also get a chance to warm up their fingers with some typing prac-tice and will be taking timed typing tests as the year progresses.

This year I am also teaching our 7th grade students So-cial Studies. Our focus is on World Geography and the five themes of geography (location, place, human/environment interaction, movement and regions). We just finished studying the United States and are now moving on to take a look at Mexico.

Blessings to all, Mrs. Cheryl Wright

of time to finish the parking lot this year. We

have made the decision, with the help of the

asphalt company and the diocese, to winterize

the parking lot. This process will allow the

parking lot to be temporarily put on hold until

the the job is completed in the spring of 2019.

Due to the time frame we had after Applefest

and the repairs that needed to be done we were

unable to finish and we want to ensure that we

are getting a great finished product. Please keep

in mind this is not the end result of the parking

lot. There is still a top coat that needs to go over

what is already there. We will be able to use all

of the parking lot for the time being. Please see

the new layout of the parking lot on page 13 of

this bulletin. Some areas have changed. Please

note the new One Ways in the parking lot. I

appreciate everyone's patience in making sure

that we are getting the best parking lot for our

parish.

OCTOBER WEEKEND ROSARY

October is both Breast Cancer and Respect Life month. We will be praying the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary during October for both intentions. Both of these concerns address preserving life and assuring dignity. We are called to "Respect life from the moment of conception to natural death." As always your personal intentions are included.

the DOMESTIC CHURCH CCW- COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN NEWS...

I read a cute story this week and wanted to share this powerful message. Two donkeys were walking in Jerusalem when one of the donkeys said to the other, "Just yesterday I was here carrying Jesus and the people were singing and shouting and throwing down their cloaks for me to walk on, and today they don't even recognize me". The other donkey replied, "that's how it is my friend….. Without JESUS you are nothing.” Just something to think about.

Thanks to those of you who have paid your CCW Dues. Our yearly membership dues of $12.00 are collected Oct., Nov., and Dec. The money collected is our operating budget for the year. If you misplaced the envelope packet you can use a plain envelope. Mark it CCW Dues, your name, address and phone number. You can put it in the collection basket.

November 14 we meet in the Founders hall of activity center for a craft night, making small items to be donated to the local nursing care facilities. Jean Carindoff is chairing this evening along with Deanna and Cheryl. Next week we will have some suggestions for things to bring along. We will just have one dessert and time to put together our crafts. Call Shirley at 810-6294775 to let her know you will be there.

On December 12, we will have a Christmas Luncheon away from the parish. Location and more information will be announced. We are planning a CCW Fund Raiser for late January. It will be a jewelry sale. We ask you to start going through your jewelry and finding nice things you don't use any more. We plan to collect for a few weeks and then have a sale open to the parish and the community. Watch for Jewelry Sale information in coming bulletins. Any questions contact Kathy Williams--810-629-1173.

Please remember to thank God for your faith and the freedom to practice it. Pray for our parish. Ask God for vocations to the priesthood. Have a Blessed week. Sandy Tryles

The term “domestic church” describes the identity and mission of a Christian family. The purpose of these bulletin articles and of the Knights of Columbus Domestic Church Committee is to help one another to desire, and stay motivated to, live as a Catholic Christian family. It looks different for every family except for one thing – we all depend on God’s grace! It is a gift from God. It is His life in us! So how do we get more of this gift from God? We go to Him for it, over and over and over again.

The realization that I needed to pray more than just at Mass once a week came to me when the Sunday Gospel was about the apostles asking Jesus to teach them to pray. These were Jewish men whose culture it was to pray three times a day- and they needed to ask how to pray? They must have seen Jesus pray differently and they wanted what He had. Jesus had a personal relationship with God the Father. He identified with God and God’s mission and was one with Him. Jesus was fully alive with the life of God and everyone around Him wanted it.

One resource that the Knights of Columbus offers is a booklet entitled, The Family Fully Alive, Building the Domestic Church. It contains prayers, meditations and activities to enrich family life. Check out the website at www.kofc.org/domestic church. Advent is coming quickly and the prayers and meditations begin with the month of December.

Take the family to the sacrament of confession, as sin separates us from God. This reconciliation with God opens us up to receive His grace.

Another suggestion is the book, 77 Ways to Pray with your Kids by Jerry Windley-Daoust and is available through the Dynamic Catholic website, www.dynamiccatholic.com.

Perhaps we can set a date with another family to pray together. We are sometimes afraid to come across as too “holy” and yet that is our identity and mission as a Christian family. Jesus’ holiness attracted others. Holiness is attractive and fills us with grace. Let’s pray for it, Amen!

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

Confession is offered in the church: Saturday: 3:00 p.m.— 4:00 p.m. Monday 9:00 a.m.— 9:30 a.m.,

Wednesday 5:30 p.m.—6:30 p.m. Friday 9:00 a.m.—9:30 a.m.

October 28, 2018 St. John the Evangelist 175th Anniversary Pastor Apprecia on Page

I often noticed how busy the priests were in our parish, and just thought they must be gifted with super human strength. (Which I guess they are in a way)

I have several favorite memories of the priesthood—this one actually didn’t include my own pastor, but a group of clergy that came to the retreat center where I worked:

That particular Thursday afternoon the priests began to arrive, carrying their luggage to their rooms. Other than dinner and social hour, nothing else was planned for the night. In the common room was a row of recliners facing a wall of windows. As I walked through the room it was so silent that I was surprised to see that every chair was occupied with a priest either quietly looking out the window, reading, or dozing as they waited for dinnertime. They are exhausted, I realized, and my heart was moved for them. I also felt a sense of satisfaction to be a part of the beautiful sanctuary where they could recharge for a few days.

I nervously approached our associate pastor for some counsel.

I was self-conscious and found my thoughts and feelings

difficult to articulate.

He listened carefully to me, even as I stumbled over my words.

When I finished, his first response was to offer empathy.

After asking some clarifying questions and offering some

helpful suggestions, he stopped. He said, "I don't want you to

leave without really knowing how much God loves you."

What a wonderful experience! I left feeling heard and loved.

The faith of this priest and work of the Holy Spirit in him was

evident.

A very nice woman here in the parish was recently dealing with a relative who was very ill. All of a sudden she was the decision maker for his life - and end of life - decisions. Something none of us would like to take on.

By coming to the parish priest, she was able to share her feelings and fears. Our priest, (Fr Robert) was able to help her right away. He was here for her before her loved one died, when he died and after his death. From the funeral planning to the burial, Father Robert was there for her and her family.

Day in and day out, our priests take on this part of their ministry, and do so with so much compassion and care. Those of us that have dealt with a similar situation, can really appreciate what a true blessing these men are to us.

I was in 6th grade and had a priest that would come and play basketball with all of us. Whether it was a game of HORSE or PIG, the animal depended on how much time he had to play. It was so fun to have a priest outside playing with us kids!

The following is part of a Tribute to one of the early pastors of St. John, Father Maurice Walsh, which took place November 4, 1942. Fr. Walsh (who was to become a Monsignor) was responsible for the construction of the present rectory and Chapel.

In Fenton, Michigan, there are a Church and a rectory, under the patronage of Saint John, that reflect the manhood and priesthood of Father Maurice Walsh. In their cragged hewn beauty, there is the skill of a builder who took hold of the bare simple grandeur of nature with his own hand, and there is the mind of the liturgist, who running in advance of his time, designed the sanctuary with the eye of the ecclesiastical artist and the heart

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY OCTOBER 28TH

Priesthood Sunday is a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the US. It is essen al to note that the number of priests in the US has steadily declined in the past 50 years. Meanwhile, the number of parishes without a resident priest pastor has sharply increased in the same period of me. The men who answer the call to priesthood are working harder than ever before. Don’t wait un l a priest re res or is transferred to celebrate their service. Like Father’s Day, let Priesthood Sunday be the one day a year when we can make priests feel appreciated and special. You can leave cards at the Welcome Desk or Parish Office. There are coloring pages of Fr. Robert as well as other pages to color for the younger set, and cards to sign if you don’t have your own.
