The Glasgow gridders played their final game of the 2015 regular season at home this past Friday night against the Mustangs of Malta. Despite the final score of 48-0 in favor of Big Blue, the Scotties played an excellent first half defensively. They gave up one big play midway through the first quarter when Malta’s Allen Williamson broke a big one for 91 yards. A successful PAT had the ’Stangs up 7-0. a bad injury and his season could be over,” explained Pierre, who was on the sidelines this past Friday night, “but that’s just my uneducated guess.” The Scotties also had some costly injuries, Benji Phillips with a dislocated shoulder in the first half (one tough kid, Benji would get it popped back in and return in the second half and see some limited offense), while Cache Younkin got his bell rung in the second half, resulting in a concussion and is done for the season. Coming out in the second half, the Mustangs would show why they are now 7-1 and a contender for a state title. They scored three TDs in the third quarter and would tack on two more in the fourth with Trace Simonson scoring four of those. Malta had 330 yards of total offense including 168 rushing yards (zero yards passing) in the second half. The Scotties had 101 yards in the first half and a mere 49 yards in the second half for 150 yards of total offense. The Scotties will now travel to Baker on Saturday for the first round of the Class B Playoffs. The Spartans steam-rolled us 40-0 in the third game of the season, but as Coach Greg Liebelt pointed out on KLTZ’s Saturday morning sports show, the Scotties have grown as a team and he expects them to be more competitive this time around, although the injuries to Cache and Benji certainly don’t help matters one bit. Other first round pairings are: Colstrip at Thompson Falls; Anaconda at Fairfield; Manhattan at Columbus; Deer Lodge at Malta; Huntley Project at Boulder; Cut Bank at Missoula Loyola; and Bigfork at Roundup.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus hosted a ship-naming ceremony Sept. 2 to announce SSN 794, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Montana.

The submarine will be named to honor the history its namesake state has with the Navy.

The future USS Montana will be the second commissioned naval vessel to bear the name. The first, commissioned in 1908, was a cruiser that operated largely off the east coast of the United States and the Caribbean until the beginning of World War I when it transported supplies and men. After the war, the cruiser made six round trips from Europe, returning 8,800 American troops.

Montana was the only state among the 48 in the union when America was building battleships to never have one named after it. Montana (BB 51) had her keel laid in 1918, but construction was cancelled after the Washington Naval Treaty limited the amount of warship tonnage the United States could have after World War I.

Montana (BB 67) was slated to be the lead of the Montana-class of battleships, which were a third-larger than the Iowa class, with improved protection against underwater weapons and shellfire. The five-ship class was authorized under the “Two Ocean Navy” building program for Fiscal Year 1941. However, with the need for more aircraft carriers, amphibious ships and anti-submarine vessels, the Montana-class building program was suspended in May 1942 and cancelled the following year before any of the keels were laid.

Conceived as a less expensive alternative to the Seawolf-class attack submarines designed during the Cold War era, Virginia-class attack submarines provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation’s undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. They have enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements that will enable them to meet the Navy’s multi-mission requirements.

These submarines have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert, long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; mine delivery and minefield mapping. They are also designed for special forces delivery and support.

Each Virginia-class submarine is 7,800-tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. They are designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time.

The submarine will be built under a unique teaming agreement between General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) and Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division wherein both companies build certain portions of each submarine and then alternate deliveries. Montana will be delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding. Virginia-class submarines will be acquired through 2043, and are expected to remain in service past 2060. Based on recent updates to the designs, some of the Virginia-class submarines are expected to still be in service in 2070. During the ceremony, Mabus also acknowledged the naming of the littoral combat ship USS Billings (LCS 15) — the first ship in naval service named after Billings, Montana — which occurred in 2013. A fast, agile surface combatant, the LCS provides the required warfighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute a variety of missions in areas such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.

Sailors man the rails as they bring the ship to life during the commissioning ceremony for the Virginia-class attack submarine USS John Warner (SSN 785) at Naval Station Norfolk. John Warner is the 12th Virginia-class attack submarine to join the fleet. Montana and Iowa are the 23rd and 24th members of the Virginia class, which is scheduled to total about 28, according to the Navy’s Virginia class statistics. “A ship’s naming is the first milestone in bringing it to life, and here continues the long tradition of strong connection between the people of Montana, Iowa and our Navy,” Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said. A farmer drove to a neighbour’s farmhouse and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. “Is your dad or mom home?” said the farmer. “No, they went to town.” “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” “No, he went with Ma and Pa.” The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself, when the young boy says, “I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Pa a message.” “Well,” said the farmer uncomfortably, “No, I really want to talk to your Dad, about your brother Howard getting my daughter Suzy pregnant”. The boy thought for a moment, then says, “You’ll have to talk to my Pa about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the boar hog, but I have no idea how much he charges for Howard.”

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher whose hand wascaught in the squeeze gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up aconversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obamaand his role as our president. The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obamais a 'Post Turtle''.*

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so hecontinued to explain. "You know he didn't get up there by himself; hedoesn't belong up there; he doesn't know what to do while he's up there;he's elevated beyond his ability to function; and you just wonder what kindof dumb ass put him up there to begin with.

You turning gay on me?"The man considers her remark for a long moment."You're right honey, I should only talk about things I actually know about.""It's as cold as a witch's tit out there."
