“The Raven”• Now, let’s take a look at another interpretation of
the poem!• The Simpsons’ annual Halloween show did a
rendition of “The Raven,” and as you are watching, think about the questions that are on your handout! You will need to answer them afterwards because we will discuss them!
“The Raven”• Please answer the following questions in your
notes or on the handout:• Do you feel this version stayed true to the true
intent of the poem?• Did it show the sadness and loss that Poe poured
into this poem?• Why would the creators of this version create it in
the manner they did? ASSESS: How was THEIR intent different from that of Poe?
Death Comes Knocking…• Today, we are going to read another poem that is
going to use personification! (Page 145)• Please write the following questions in your
notes – you will answer them after reading the poem:– What was the gardener’s motivation for running to speak
with his master? What was the author’s purpose for having the gardener come into the garden?
– Who then enters the garden to speak with the man? What was this visitor’s motivation, and why is the ending of the poem ironic?
– What universal theme is being addressed in this poem?– What is the visitor a symbol of? Draw a picture of how the
author depicts him! – Final Inference: How are both poems, “The Raven,” and
“Incident in a Rose Garden,” alike?
Incident in a Rose Garden…• Now that we have finished reading, get with a
partner and the Literary Devices questions listed below!
• Literary Devices:– Irony – How is the ending of this poem ironic?– Personification – What is personified in this poem? Is this
a common theme to be personified?– Rhyme and Rhythm – Does this poem follow the same
rhyme and rhythm rules that “The Raven,” did? Do you like how it was written? Why or why not?
