the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weep-ing they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

The Word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

Psalm 126

When the Lord restored the fortunes of / Zion, * then were we like those who / dream.

Then was our mouth filled with / laughter, * and our tongue with shouts of / joy.

Then they said among the / nations, * “The Lord has done great things for / them.”

The Lord has done great things for / us, * and we are glad in / deed.

Restore our fortunes, O / Lord, * like the watercourses of the / Negev.

Those who sowed with / tears * will reap with songs of / joy.

Those who go out weeping, carrying the / seed, * will come again with joy, shouldering their / sheaves.

The Gloria Hymnal S278

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King,almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect of the Day The Lord be with you.And also with you.Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lesson Jeremiah 31:7-9[You may be seated]

A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah.

Thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Ja-cob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; pro-claim, give praise, and say, “Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel.” See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and

4. He pardons all thy sins,prolongs thy feeble breath;he healeth thine infirmities

and ransoms thee from death.

5. He clothes thee with his love,upholds thee with his truth;and like the eagle he renews

the vigor of thy youth.

6. Then bless his holy Name!whose grace hath made thee whole,

whose lovinng-kindness crowns thy days:O bless the Lord, my soul!

Gospel Mark 10:46-52The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bar-timaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is call-ing you.” So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon[You may be seated after

the sermon opening prayer]

Lesson Hebrews 7:23-28[You may be seated]

A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.

The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and ex-alted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made per-fect forever.

The Word of the Lord.Thanks be to God.

3. He will not always chide;he will with patience wait;

his wrath is ever slow to riseand ready to abate.

Nicene Creed BCP 358[Please stand as you are able]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory

If I take the wings of morningand to foreign lands I flee;

If I force the night to hide mewho will then come seeking me?

There, O Love, I know you’ll find me,there, O Love, I know you’ll be.

With Love’s light you’ll blind the darkness,with Love’s light you’ll rescue me.

If near Eden’s tree I wanderin the place where sin began,

where the serpent mocked obedience,separating God from man.

If I build an ark to bear me safely to the mountain’s crown,If the tower I raise to touch youwounds me as it tumbles down:

If fears bid my tongue deny you,if to treachery I yield,

if remorse and bitter sorrowsend to me to that potter’s field.

Neither death, nor life, nor angels,present things, those yet to be,

neither height or depth can ever separate God’s love from me.

Presentation Hymn Hymnal 380, St. 3[Please stand as you are able]

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;praise him, all creatures here below;praise him above, ye heavenly host:

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP 361[Please stand as you are able]

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus Hymnal S128

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the Highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the Highest.

[Please stand or kneel as you are able]Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remem-brance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Fa-ther, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Re-calling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we of-fer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your peo-ple the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacra-ment, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Fa-ther, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer BCP 364

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction Anthem Hymnal S169

Invitation to CommunionThe Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

[You may be seated]

Communion of the PeopleDuring this season of coronavirus, each communicant should decide their preferred form of communion. You may receive bread only, bread and wine, or a contact-free blessing. For bread only, cross your arms over your chest after receiving the bread. If you choose to receive wine, you may consume the bread and then sip from the chalice, or extend your hands with the bread given to you to the chalice-bearer who will intinct, or dip, the bread into the wine and place it in your mouth. You may not intinct the bread yourself. Our tradition tells us that to receive communion in one kind (bread or wine) is to receive communion fully. You may receive communion at the altar rail, either kneeling or standing. Please reserve the accessibility station by the baptismal font for those who cannot ac-cess the altar rail.Please sanitize your hands before and after receiving. If you wish to refrain from communion, you may come forward to receive a contact free blessing. Cross your arms over your chest to indicate you would like a blessing.If you require a gluten-free wafer please tell the priest when you come forward.

Communion Music Hymnal 339

1. Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness,leave the gloomy haunts of sadness,come into the daylight’s splendor,there with joy thy praises renderunto him whose grace unbounded

hath this wondrous banquet founded—high o’er all the heavens he reigneth,

yet to dwell with thee he deigneth.

2. Sun, who all my life dost brighten;Light, who dost my soul enlighten;

Joy, the best that any knoweth;Fount, whence all my being floweth:

at thy feet I cry, my Maker,let me be a fit partaker

of this blessèd food from heaven,for our good, thy glory, given.

3. Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray thee,let me gladly here obey thee;

never to my hurt invited,be thy love with love requited;

from this banquet let me measure,Lord, how vast and deep its treasure;

through the gifts thou here dost give me,as thy guest in heaven receive me.

Hymnal 302

1. Father, we thank thee who has plantedthy holy Name within our hearts.

Knowledge and faith and life immortalJesus thy Son to us imparts.

Thou, Lord, didst make all for thy pleasure,didst give us food for all our days,giving in Christ the Bread eternal;

thine is the power, be thine the praise.

2. Watch o’er thy Church, O Lord, in mercy,save it from evil, guard it still,perfect it in thy love, unite it,

cleansed and conformed unto thy will. As grain, once scattered on the hillsides,

was in this broken bread made one,so from all lands thy Church be gathered

into thy kingdom by thy Son.

Post-Communion Prayer BCP 365Let us pray.

[Please stand or kneel as you are able]

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living mem-bers of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. The DismissalLet us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.Thanks be to God.

Closing Hymn Hymnal 429

[Please stand as you are able.]

1. I’ll praise my Maker while I’ve breath; and when my voice is lost in death,

praise shall employ my nobler powers.My days of praise shall ne’er be pastwhile life and thought and being last,

or immortality endures.

2. How happy they whose hopes relyon Israel’s God, who made the sky

and earth and seas with all their train;whose truth for ever stands secure,

who saves the oppressed, and feeds the poor.And none shall find his promise vain.

3. The Lord pours eyesight on the blind;the Lord supports the fainting mind

and sends the laboring conscience peace.He helps the stranger in distress, the widowed and the fatherless,

and grants the prisoner sweet release.

4. I’ll praise him while he lends me breath;and when my voice is lost in death,

praise shall employ my nobler powers.My days of praise shall ne’er be pastwhile life and thought and being last,

or immortality endures.

Postlude Praeludium in C Georg Böhm

The flowers on the altar are given to the glory of God in thanksgiving for the first day of marriage of

Cheryl Smith and Jana Plowman.

HYMN NOTESHymnal 429 - I’ll praise my Maker while I’ve breathIsaac Watts, author of this text, has made a wonder-ful paraphrase of Psalm 146. This was one of John Wesley’s favorite hymns and he sang it, instead of any hymn by his brother Charles, as he lay dying. Although it begins with God in creation, it ends with concern for the blind, the troubled, strangers, widows, fatherless children and prisoners. God whose concern reaches to everyone is worthy of praise, in this life and the life to come.

TODAY’S MUSICSergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a prolific composer and wrote symphonies, chamber music, solo works for many instruments, and vocal music. As a pianist, his contributions to piano literature have become standard and virtuosic repertoire for any serious pianist. A vocalise is essentially a vocal work without words. Choir warm-ups usually contain a certain amount of vocalises. Rachmaninoff’s is perhaps one of the most substantial and beautiful. It has been transcribed for many instruments including violin, cello, bassoon, and many more. Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936), a contemporary of Rach-maninoff and was head of the St. Petersburg Con-servatory from 1905 - 1930 when he left the Soviet Union permanently. His meditation, composed in 1891, was originally for violin and written as a salon or concert hall piece. Georg Böhm (1661-1733) was the organist at the church of St. John in Lüneberg for almost his entire life. His praeludium in C is a great example of the improvisatory and contrapuntal styles of the time including Stylus Fantasticus or ‘fantastic style’ which is highlighted at the beginning and end-ing of this work.

Today’s Offertory anthem is a new text with new music. If I Take the Wings of Morning has a light, almost folk-like melody. The refrain returns after most but not all verses. Amanda Husberg (b. 1940) lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she came soon after graduating with a B.S. from Concordia Teach-ers College in Seward, Nebraska where she majored in organ. Her M.S. in Early Childhood Education is from Hunter College, in New York City. She is retired from being a New York City Day Care Center Director. She has been Director of Music at St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church, an inner-city, multi-cultural church in north Brooklyn, for 41 years. She has 190 hymns published in various hymnals and supplements in the U.S., Canada, and Brazil.
