Welcome to the Colours of Autumn Sale that must surely by now be considered the highlight of the fall sale season for Limousin breeders in eastern Canada. Now we all realize that 2020 hasn’t just been a bowl of smarties but for those of us lucky enough to be in the beef industry it has been good for business. Consumers now appreciate where their food comes from, recognize the value of a quality product and that in turn has reflected in a strong demand for cull cows, bulls and a good looking forecast for the fall calf run.

The hosts and consignors of this sale always put their best foot forward and you can bet this years’s offering is packed full of opportunity and promise. It could be an exciting new brood cow calving early next year or a fancy heifer calf that will hopefully have more chances to chase banners in 2021. The sale has moved a month or so earlier as the fall opened up a bit for more flexibility, and hopefully by then we won’t be into long John season yet, so plan on a comfortable and safe setting to appraise your selections this year. Confidence in your truck to start in the morning, confidence in your equipment to get the job done, and confidence in your breeding program.Some things you can be more confident in than others. When we selected Flatliner from the Hewson/Double B consignment at the Solid Gold Sale in Regina, we were confident that he was going to be a key player in our herd going forward. He had just come off the Reserve National Championship at the CWA Show. Everything we had seen and heard about this young bull was positive. From the amount of hip, hair, muscle shape, disposition and the program he was coming from just added to our confidence. We used him heavily on our own cows, and even bred a few heifers to him. This past Spring our confidence was affirmed with the arrival of his first babies. They had low birth weights and very high vigor. Calves weren’t on the ground 15 minutes and they were up and ready to get to work. Our confidence was exceeded when the first calf heifers started calving. Never before have we owned a bull that works as well on heifers as he does on mature cows. As the calves have grown on grass over the summer, the muscle shape, disposition and hair have all been passed on from Flatliner. Bulls are rugged, heavy muscled individuals with smooth heads. Females are long, pretty and have fantastic front ends. Flatliner also adds extra length to these calves without compromising birth weight. As one fellow said just last week when in to purchase the first Flatliner bull calf “ you can’t build them with their ears too close to their backside; these are some great calves.” We sold some limited semen to some progressive breeders and the compliments on the Flatliners calves have been over whelming. He was also campaigned on the show road in 2019 and brought home 3 Grand Championships along with 2 Overall Championships and stood very competitively at the RAWF- again, confidence was reaffirmed. In today’s world, where you cannot always be confident in everything, Flatliner is proving his worth and is about to make a tremendous mark on the breed. Every year there is always at least one “Rose” heifer in our offering simply because they work so good period! We love these females, they are hard-working, feed efficient and look good doing it. Earlier this spring this heifer was slotted to be our consignment for the Royal Elite Sale, unfortunately that was unable to happen and this heifer will have to wait until next year to set foot in a show ring. We were excited to acquire her dam last fall in this very sale and she did not disappoint one bit, this will also be one of your first chances to purchase a Flatliner daughter at public auction. The first crop of Flatliner calves are correct, long spined and full of performance, and this heifers EPDs sure do help add to the total package. The heifer is halter broke and quiet, she would make an excellent project for 2021.

She is part of the second calf crop of Earmark, a bull that has us excited for the future of his daughters, they are all ultra attractive, easy doing, sound and complete with great udder development. 22G is a barn favourite, she is dark cherry red and very fancy with lots of size for a May female. 22G is out of arguably one of our best result females that have come from Windy Gables and our provincial Champion bull in 2017 Darling Eliminator 31E.
