Children’s teeth need to be looked after gently and carefully.

Baby teeth or primary teeth help children to speak clearly and chew, they also pave the way for secondary teeth. By following a simple dental routine, you can help give your children healthy teeth and gums.

It is very important not to wait until your child experiences a toothache to visit the dentist. By having routine check-ups from an early age, it can help to eliminate the fear of the dental setting and establish a good dental routine they can follow throughout their lives.

The first visit is usually a short one. Our aim is to give your child a chance to get to know our fantastic dental team and experience our modern clinic in a friendly and non-threatening manner.

Cavity risk assessment

Examine your child’s teeth for decay

Examine your child’s gums and soft tissue for disease or problems

Evaluate the way your child’s teeth fit together, “the bite”.

Identify any potential problems or deleterious habits.

Show you and your child how to properly clean his or her teeth at home.

Answer your questions or concerns.

Present your child with a “showbag” of goodies

We will help eliminate the fear of the dental setting and establish a good dental routine children can follow throughout their lives.

To encourage children to visit Hastings Family Dental Care we offer “gap free examinations” for patients with ‘extras’ cover on their private health insurance. We also accept Medicare Teen Vouchers.

For children without private health insurance we offer affordable examinations for further information please call 5979 1717.

A gardening solution that A gardening solution that won’t break your backwon’t break your backHASTINGS Garden and Mini Mix has a great idea for spring gardens – a raised garden tub.

The popular, raised garden tubs are great for people with limited space who still want the con-venience of growing their own fresh herbs and vegetables.

They are perfect for renters or those living in small apartments or units as they are easily disas-sembled.

Vegetable garden beds are fun and educational for the kids and also keep the garden out of reach of family pets and unwelcome pests such as rab-bits.

The raised garden tubs come in three sizes and stand 800mm tall. The sizes of the tubs range from one square metre to two square metres.

There is no more bending with raised garden tubs. They have a protector strip on the top edge so there are no sharp edges to worry about.

Construction of the raised tub is of heavy grade BlueScope corrugated steel available in many colours.

The tubs are great for the whole family and are the way of the future – energy effi cient, water ef-fi cient, convenient, healthy and money saving.

They are ideal for growing a wide variety of fresh herbs, salad vegetables, Asian leafy vegeta-bles, tomatoes and more – and all just seconds away from the kitchen.

They are a great gift idea for a friend or rela-tive.

Hastings Garden and Mini Mix is able to offer full service for raised garden tubs. Not only can they supply the tub, but also the soil and drain-age.

An installation service is available for people who are unable to assemble their tub.

Hastings Garden and Mini Mix is a one-stop shop when it comes to the purchase and setup of raised garden tubs.

Call Hastings Garden and Mini Mix on 5979 1706 or drop in and see them at 2165 Frankston-Flinders Road in Hastings.

Using Skeyndor for facials and any spa treatments, the aim of the salon is to obtain results from the products while enveloping the client in the spa atmosphere to create total relaxation and a general feeling of serenity.

Treatments such as waxing electrolysis, tinting, tanning and makeup and massage – including Swedish, relaxation, therapeutic, deep tissue and pregnancy massage – are available at BBB

By Keith PlattTHE $6 million “affordable” homes project in Marine Pde, Hastings, will not be fi nished until next year.

A halt was called on work to complete the 20 homes earlier this year when builders unearthed a disused fuel tank.

Since then the land has been exten-sively tested to gauge the extent of contamination from the tank left over from a former service station.

“It’s really sad this has happened,” state manager for Community Housing Ltd Brett Wake said on Monday.

“We’re very confi dent we’ll be able to fi nish the project, but it won’t be un-til the next calendar year.”

Mr Wake said Community Hous-ing had put off seeking tenants for the homes.

Seven people with disabilities had been lined up by the Department of Human Services, but he did not believe anyone had been left with “accommo-dation stress”.

“We were about 16 weeks off com-pletion when the tank was found and it won’t take much to fi nish the project.

“It seems a complex situation, but I believe we will get to the end of it.”

The process involves Community Housing hiring consultants to carry out soil testing under the direction of the Environment Protection Authority.

“There is another round of testing to be done and we will need remediation, certainly at the front facing Marine Pde,” Mr Wake said.

“There are also pipes under the road and that’s where the problem seems to be.”

EXPERT ADVICE: FAMILY OWNED AND RUN BY LOCALS WITH OVER 26 YEARS EXPERIENCEPeninsula Homemaker Centre. Nepean Hwy (corner Bungower Rd), MORNINGTON

5976 8811 www.riseandshine.com.au

Planning needs Planning needs visionvisionIN my years in local government, no one impressed me as much as Alan Hunt, the Planning Minister in the Hamer state government.

I couldn’t understand why he didn’t eventually become premier because he stood out as an honourable, astute and principled man with a broad appre-ciation of the common good.

In The News last week, Mr Hunt praised the foresight of previous go-vernments for introducing, and usually maintaining, Melbourne’s green wed-ges (“Hamer the green wedge vision-ary”, 16/10/12). Being a loyal person, he refused to criticise the pre sent gov-ernment’s new planning proposals.

However Mr Hunt’s previous state-ments calling for clearly understood and gradual change to planning policy are being ignored by the present Plan-ning Minister, Matthew Guy, who in newspaper articles and on air pro-claims the need for fast-tracked radical planning changes to our green wedges, and to our farming, residential and business zones.

Our local politicians, state and fed-eral, fully support the Guy version of vision but now say it will not apply to the Mornington Penin sula because of a sweetheart deal presently being or-ganised – sparing us the turmoil to be unleashed on the rest of Victoria.

They promise to avoid Mr Guy’s pro posals to: Increase the “as of right” commer-cial uses in residential zones with no right of appeal. Allow ad hoc development along main roads even in residential and farm ing zones. Promote unprecedented commercial development in national parks and green wedges.

Increase his overriding planning powers over local government and resi dents.

By the way, I recently challenged David Morris, MP for Mornington, to a public debate about these drastic new planning proposals.

As Mr Morrison hasn’t bothered to reply, I now extend my challenge to any local MP willing to publicly de-fend Matthew Guy’s draconian vision for Victoria.

David Gill, Balnarring

Pressure on Pressure on planningplanningBALNARRING Beach Ratepayers Association (BBRA) is fi ghting to pre-vent hasty changes to planning laws from damaging the future of the Morn-ington Peninsula.

At a meeting on 6 October the asso-ciation’s committee explained its con-cerns to Hastings MP Neil Burgess, Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO Mi chael Kennedy and shire strategic planner Alan Cowley.

The association set out its grave con-cerns with the radical proposals for huge changes to the state’s planning laws that were recently published by the state government.

These include: The lack of appreciation that most planning decisions can reverberate through our society for 100 years or more, and should therefore be careful-ly considered and not rushed into like a bull at a gate. The economic argument being given priority should not be at the expense of proper social planning policy, en-vironmental considerations, residen-tial amenity and the right of residents to appeal against poor plan ning deci-sions. The possibility that the proposals

could easily lead to commercial and industrial zones expanding into our resi dential, farming and green wedge zones in an ad hoc manner.

Messrs Burgess and Kennedy pro-mised that that there will be a planning statement, created for our peninsula by the shire council, that will protect and shield the peninsula from the worst of the proposed statewide changes.

Mr Burgess assured the association that the government would try to get both the planning changes and the pen-insula planning statement into action at the same time. But he could not guar-antee this, as it was a very involved task involving both the council and the government.

The association cannot understand why the government is proceeding with undue haste to introduce such ex-tensive changes to planning zones in a period largely coinciding with local council elections and the holiday sea-son.

In last week’s paper the former Lib-eral Planning Minister, Alan Hunt, urged that planning changes “should be done gradually, and only through a full process of public consultation”.

We agree with Mr Hunt that plan-ning is too important to be changed in a rush of blood. Our future generations deserve better.

We feel it would be a lot more pru-dent to create the peninsula-specifi c planning statement fi rst before going ahead with any statewide planning changes.

We urge all residents to write to their parliamentarians and let them know what they think.

OPEN 7 DAYS

By Keith PlattFEDERAL politicians are about to get a colourful reminder that polio survi-vors still exist.

The disease was declared eradicated in Australia in 2000, but it has left a legacy of complex health issues for an ageing population of survivors.

Hastings resident Fran Henke is one of 46 people with post-polio syndrome going to Canberra next week to lobby politicians for more money to support Polio Australia.

They will be dressed in orange and have appointments to meet with MPs from their respective areas, in Mrs Henke’s case Flinders MP Greg Hunt and Dunkley MP Bruce Billson.

“There are hundreds of thousands of Australians in urgent need of support and specialised services to diagnose, treat and manage the complex and de-bilitating symptoms of the late effects of polio and post-polio syndrome,” Mrs Henke said.

“Government has been supportive of polio vaccination overseas, but has refused funding to Polio Australia an-nually since inception. Why? We are still here.

“The last thing any of us want is another person to go through what we have and then fi nd it bounces back in later life.”

Mrs Henke said few doctors still practising were around for the acute phase of polio during the epidemics when children in callipers were a com-mon sight in schools, “so are not on top of the late effects”.

“It can take six years to get a diag-nosis of late effects of polio, so many

Polio’s colourful campaignersPolio’s colourful campaigners

wrong diagnoses have been made dur-ing that time, including fi bromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or mostly, ‘it’s all in your head and you’re getting old any-how’. I had both of those.

“We are all getting old and there is wear and tear on the body that has been forced along by people determined to be as normal as possible, if not better.

“But there is more going on. We don’t respond well to anaesthetics, joint replacements need extra time and rehabilitation. Polio survivors have died being pushed along after joint re-placements.”

Mrs Henke said Mr Hunt was co-

convenor of Parliamentary Friends of Polio Survivors and Mr Billson had raised the needs of polio survivors in parliament “as well as being guest speaker at the Mt Eliza Polio Australia Retreat”.

“We need federal funding for ser-vices, for education of health profes-sionals, and to help fi nd many people who were told by their embarrassed parents never to mention polio again,” she said.

“They now fi nd it excruciatingly hard to come forward and seek help or to attribute the new pain, muscle weak-ness, fatigue, brain fog, respiratory and

swallowing problems to a virus that af-fected their lives as children.”

Mrs Henke has created a Facebook page to help people with polio in Asia, Africa, China and India.

“These countries have even less sup-port than us. Many of the beggars in In-dia and China are polio survivors, and you should see how they are forced to get around in Mexico.”

An online petition to support the Australian polio survivors’ efforts to gain federal funding can be signed at www.communityrun.org/petitions/federal-funding-urgently-needed-for-polio-survivors

Bashing chargesA SECOND man has been charged over the bashing of a man in Morning-ton last month.

A 23-year-old man from Morning-ton was charged with assault and drug traffi cking offences in relation to the alleged attack in which Mical Jones, 28, sustained serious head injuries. He was due to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

Kyle Pollard, 22, has also been charged in connection with the alleged attack. He fronted Frankston Magis-trates’ Court after he was arrested at his Frankston home around 6am on Tuesday 9 October.

He was charged with intention to cause serious injury and other assault-related charges and was remanded in custody to appear at a committal hear-ing in January.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rohan Brock of Mornington crime investi-gation unit said police would argue Pollard was the “main offender” in the alleged bashing.

Mr Jones, a house painter of Rose-bud, had been on a night out at venues in Main St, Mornington, and had left The Bay Hotel alone when it closed at 3.30am.

He was discovered unconscious and lying next to a rubbish bin by passers-by about 20 minutes later in Empire St Mall.

Flasher warningROSEBUD police have warned beach goers to be alert after reports of a fl asher at McCrae.

Detective Senior Constable An-drew Hodgson of Rosebud crime investigation unit said two young women were walking on the beach near the yacht club when a man emerged from between boatsheds and deliberately exposed himself.

By Keith PlattA MAN who spends much of his time protecting endangered birds has been attacked for the second time in eight months.

It appears Malcolm Brown is be-ing blamed for an inquiry that could lead to dogs being banned on beaches within Mornington Peninsula National Park.

“A drunken dog walker who lives nearby knocked on my door Saturday night, threatened me, pinned me up against my front door, stopping my ability to breath, and tore my shirt,” Mr Brown said on Monday.

In February, Mr Brown was thrown to the ground by an irate dog owner af-ter taking pictures of an unleashed dog near nesting hooded plovers.

Both assaults have been reported to police, although Mr Brown has not been told of any prosecution following the earlier incident.

“I think the police will be doing something this time. I’ve given them a statement and understand they’ll be going to see him this week.”

Mr Brown, an environmental con-sultant, fl ed to Gippsland from his Rye home after Saturday night’s attack.

“The life of being an activist is not very glamorous,” he said.

Mr Brown plans on returning to Rye later this week to break the news to his wife who has been in northern NSW.

“I was lucky to be able to come here to hide for a few days,” Mr Brown told The News from his rural retreat.

He said his assailant had been drunk “and so the actual conversation was not that clear”.

However, there was no misunder-standing the threat of further physical violence – “I’ll cut you into pieces and bury you out the back” – if Mr Brown persisted in advocating a ban on dogs in the national park.

“Luckily, I was on the phone talking about the threatened plovers when I answered the knock on the door,” Mr Brown said.

“It seemed a bit strange, so I kept the phone live and the person I was speak-ing with heard the whole assault.”

Mr Brown said his attacker and his female partner alleged a woman had left a message on their phone threaten-ing to poison their dog.

“I told them that had nothing to do with me,” Mr Brown said.

Mr Brown said he would continue to support a dog ban, but said people were misguided in thinking any ban was due to him.

“You can’t let people bully you like this. I don’t make these decisions and thumping me won’t make any differ-ence.

“If they had their dogs on a leash and kept them away from nesting birds there’d be no problem.”

Mr Brown said there was 75 per cent compliance with dog laws on beaches on the Western Port side of the penin-sula, but 90 per cent non-compliance on the ocean beaches, such as St An-drews and Rye.

As reported in The News two weeks ago (“Dog ban could protect endan-gered species”), Parks Victoria is seeking community feedback before deciding whether to ban dogs from the park, which covers the beaches and foreshore from Portsea to Bushrangers Bay and inland along Main Creek to Greens Bush at Main Ridge.

Chief ranger Libby Jude said there had been “numerous reports of dog at-tacks and threats to local wildlife”.

“There are 32 fauna species listed as endangered, vulnerable or near threat-ened living in the Mornington Penin-sula National Park and we need to pro-tect them,” she said.

The article also quoted Mr Brown saying the ban was long overdue and that giving the public a say was “ri-diculous”.

“It is the worst park in the state for protection of the hooded plover,” Mr Brown said.

Submissions close Friday 30 No-vember, so a decision is unlikely be-fore the end of the year or in time for this year’s nesting season.

By Mike HastESSO is fl aring more gas than normal from its twin stacks due to a planned partial plant shutdown.

The fl aring started on 18 October and will last until Monday 5 November.

The company notifi ed the Hastings community when it sent a fax to West-ern Port Chamber of Commerce & Industry on 2 October.

Chamber president Lisa Dixon said the information from Esso about the increased fl aring came as a result of the company’s community dinner in August.

“Esso and Mobil acknowledged [at the dinner] that they would like to become more involved in the local com munity,” she stated.

“They would like to become more approachable. To help start this, they have sent out an explanation about increased fl aring and what it means to put residents at ease.”

Colloquially known as the candle-sticks, the fl ares are safety devices used to stop fl ammable gas escaping into the atmosphere in the event of occasional process interruptions, Esso states on its website.

“Instead of venting the gas to the atmosphere, it is burnt off safely under controlled conditions that minimise the environmental impact.

“Flare management is a priority task in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the pro-duction of oil and gas.”

In the letter to the chamber, Esso acting plant manager Neil Wainwright stated the Environment Protection

Authority had been notifi ed of the increased fl aring and “we will continue to update the EPA as required”.

“The Country Fire Authority, Vic-toria Police and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council have also been notifi ed.

“While you may notice the additional

fl aring, we do not anticipate any impact to the community when this work is being conducted.”

The company said fl aring had been reducing since 2006 “because the acti vities of Longford plants, Long Island Point [Hastings] and our ethane

customer were well coordinated”.The exception was between Decem-

ber 2008 and March 2009 when a container ship’s anchor ruptured the pipeline under Port Phillip between Mordialloc and Altona (see box) that carries ethane from the Hastings plant.

Esso operation with flareEsso operation with flare

THE ethane pipeline under Port Phillip was ruptured on 13 December 2008 when an anchor of the container ship APL Sydney snagged it during a storm, causing about 60 tonnes of gas to escape.

It forced Esso to stop producing ethane while repairs were carried out.

The pipeline was fi xed by early March 2009, but then followed a drawn-out legal process with pipeline owners BHP Billiton and ExxonMobil (Esso), and Altona gas customers attempting to recoup cost of repairs and losses from the ship’s managers.

Almost $100 million was claimed, but only a third was awarded by the Federal Court.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation found the ship’s anchor had been let go too close to the pipeline in gale force winds and insuffi cient anchor cable had been deployed.

In March 2010 the Federal Court strongly berated the Port of Melbourne Authority and a Port Phillip sea pilot for failing the ship’s captain, who had been ordered to remain anchored while his vessel was pushed closer to the undersea ethane pipeline.

Continued from Page 7Mr Wake said in the meantime an option was to

fi nish and use homes built at the corner of King and Victoria streets.

“It will be two months before we know when we’ll be able to fi nish.”

Remediation yet to be confi rmed by the EPA will include removing and replacing soil on the site and then capping it with concrete.

The unfi nished homes in Victoria St are next to a $1.5 million group house for six people with severe disabilities supported by a live-in carer.

When completed, the “affordable” homes will offer secure, long-term rental accommodation to senior citizens, families on low incomes, and people with intellectual and physical disabilities who can live independently with support.

Dubbed the “Hastings model” the project is be-

ing built with money from state and federal gov-ernments as well as Frankston Peninsula Carers.

The 20 homes were originally slated for com-pletion in March.

By Mike HastTHE heavy lift ship MV Blue Marlin steamed through The Heads into Port Phillip on Wednesday morning carrying the newest vessel of the Royal Australian Navy.

The hull of LHD Canberra, the fi rst of the navy’s two new amphibious ships, was built at the renowned naval shipyard in Ferrol in northern Spain by Navantia and launched in February 2011.

Canberra is a Landing Helicopter Dock ship and will be fi tted out by BAE Systems at Williamstown shipyard before going into service in 2014. The hull of her twin, Adelaide, will arrive in Australia in 2014.

They are 230 metres long, 32 metres wide, have a maximum draught of 7.18 metres and replace the navy’s existing amphibious ships, which support land forces.

Canberra will be partially “unfastened” over about two days near Geelong on the western side of Port Phillip, fl oated off when Blue Marlin submerges over about 24 hours in 23 metres in the middle of the bay and then towed by three tugs to Williamstown, where shipping lanes will be closed until Canberra has docked.

Carrying Canberra 12,000 nautical miles around the Cape of Good Hope in 45 days was not the heaviest task for Blue Marlin but was a challenge to load and transport as the hull protrudes 55 metres at the aft of Blue Marlin. A new attachment system had to be created.

At full load, Canberra and Adelaide will each displace 27,851 tonnes, making them the largest ships to serve in the RAN.

Blue Marlin – the world’s largest semi-submersible vessel – can carry up to 76,000 tons, usually oil rigs, and was built in 2000 for Dockwise. It is 224 metres long and 63 metres wide. She will be superseded later this year by Vanguard, a bowless semi-submersible that will carry 110,000 tons.

WESTERN Port Secondary College was last week transformed from drab to fab thanks to the efforts of some clever year 9 students and the Hastings Community House Craft Group.

A spring-themed yarn bomb was undertaken on the school grounds to brighten up a small outside sitting area.

Assistant principle Hannah Lewis supervised the event as the students decorated the area with donated items as well as pieces they had previ-ously made at a community house workshop.

“The results speak for themselves; the space is now a vibrant and unique place where students can relax and enjoy their creativity,” community house coordinator Lisa Glover said.

“The display can be seen from the school’s car park, so if anyone’s driving past they should check it out.”

By Mike HastTHE last chapter in the Solomon Lew pool saga played out on Monday last week when contrac-tors started demolishing the $400,000 horizon pool built on Crown land at Mt Eliza.

Workers from Templestowe-based demolition fi rm DEC moved a heavy-duty concrete saw, small excavator and other equipment onto the property in Osprey Ave.

The pool was built without a planning permit and in secret on public foreshore land next to the Lew family holiday property above Moondah Beach.

It caused a huge ruckus when discovered by authorities after workers were heard bragging in a bar about building a pool that neighbours thought was a water tank.

Mornington Peninsula Shire ordered the pool be demolished and remediation of the land on which the pool, a retaining wall, fence and land-scaping had been placed.

Then followed months of controversy as law-yers acting for Mr Lew, a billionaire clothing re-tailer, tried fi rst to buy the public land and then lease it.

Mornington MP David Morris lobbied strongly for no sale of the land and shire councillor Leigh Eustace pushed the council to take legal action.

The shire closed part of Moondah Beach over

fears the land would subside when cracks were discovered in the retaining wall.

Last December an agreement was reached with the shire before the case went to Frankston Mag-istrates’ Court.

The shire became aware of the pool in a se-cluded part of the foreshore in August 2010.

The pool’s existence became public in May 2011 after a report in the Sunday Age.

The pool was emptied last August and covered to prevent its use while the council investigated the stability of the site and conducted negotia-tions with representatives from Lew family com-pany Shuttlehall regarding the safe removal of the pool.

The Osprey Ave property, believed to be worth more than $2.5 million, is used as a holiday re-treat by Jacqueline Lew and also has an indoor pool.

Last week, The News sought comment from Cr Eustace.

Cr Eustace said he had not “been offi cially informed by council of the works being under-taken” but knew they were pending.

“This is a good result for the protection of Crown land owned by the people of Victoria and the pool removal and restoration of the land be-ing at no cost to Mornington Peninsula ratepay-ers or the state government.”

McCrae Homestead manager Sharon Bowen said peninsula residents could “keep alive our pioneer heritage”.

“There is an urgent need for more people to assist in guiding visitors, housekeeping and maintenance of the house, visitor centre and gardens,” she said.

Volunteers are asked to give two half-days each month.

Built in 1844 on Arthur’s Seat Run, the largest lease in the fl edgling Port Phillip colony, the homestead is Victoria’s oldest original house and the only original pioneer property on the peninsula that is open to the public.

The historical value of the property is enhanced by the diaries, journals, music books and paintings left by the homestead’s designer and original resident, Georgiana McCrae.

A volunteer information session will be held at McCrae Homestead, 11 Beverley Rd, McCrae, on Saturday 27 October at 1.30pm. Details: 5986 1017.

Historic home closure threatHistoric home closure threatGEORGIANA Huntley Gordon, daughter of the 5th Duke of Gordon, was already an accomplished artist and well-educated young woman when she married Andrew McCrae, a solicitor of Edinburgh, in 1830.

The couple lived in London before deciding to follow Andrew’s mother and brother, who had emigrated to Sydney. In 1839, just three years after Melbourne was founded, Andrew landed in Port Phillip colony. Georgiana and their four children followed the next year and they settled in a small house in Lonsdale St.

It could not have been more remote from her well-to-do life in London – in distance, amenity and fashion.

Melbourne had no made roads and the few declared thoroughfares were dotted with stumps that, being encountered by carriage wheels, frequently caused passengers to be violently ejected. They were dry and dusty ways in summer, impassable quagmires in winter.

There were few permanent buildings, but lots of tents.

Social life was very limited, especially for women, and Andrew struggled to make a success of his legal business.

In this environment, Georgiana had two more children and continued painting with distinction, although she was prevented from pursuing it as a career by Andrew’s family, who considered any profession, let along painting, unfi t for a lady.

McCrae decided to try his hand at farming and in 1844 obtained the lease of Arthur’s Seat Run, 8300 hectares that took in what is now Safety Beach, Dromana, McCrae, Arthurs Seat, Red Hill, Red Hill South and Main Ridge.

Georgiana designed the homestead and it was built by Andrew, his sons, their tutor and other men, who lived in timber huts. The principal builder was Henry Tuck who later took up Manton’s lease in Western Port.

The property was three days’ journey from Melbourne by horse and wagon or two days by boat. The nearest neighbours were at Cape Schanck and Mt Martha

Stores came from Melbourne by sailing vessel and were unloaded on the beach this is now McCrae.

Georgiana continued painting, played the piano, entertained visitors when they passed by, planted a garden and orchard,

and generally set to and created a home for her family. She gave birth to two more children while at Arthur’s Seat Run.

In 1851, Andrew could no longer afford to operate the lease and the family returned to Melbourne.

The house was owned by the Burrell family for 70 years and Arthur’s Seat Run was steadily reduced by subdivision until just 40 hectares were sold off in 1929 after Kate Burrell died.

From 1930 to 1950 McCrae Homestead had several owners until Georgiana’s grandson George McCrae purchased the property in 1961 and set about restoring it to be a museum to his grandparents.

On his death in 1970, it was sold to the National Trust and opened to the public after being restored as near as possible to its original form.

The house is only one of two drop slab timber pioneer dwellings in Victoria and stands just as Georgiana envisaged it.

Visitors to McCrae Homestead and Museum in Beverley Rd, McCrae, get a vivid glimpse into the family life of a pioneer past that can scarcely be imagined.

The homestead is open from midday to 4pm each weekend.

Early birds hoping to snap up winning fishBy Jo WinterbottomTHE early bird will catch the big fi sh in the an-nual Tea Tree Snapper Fishing Competition next month.

Anglers hopeful of winning the title of Victo-rian Amateur Snapper Champion can start fi sh-ing from 5am on Friday 2 November and fi nal weigh-in is at Mornington Racecourse at 2pm on Saturday 3 November.

The annual competition hosted by Snapper Point Angling Club, now in its 29th year, is billed as “the competition for the serious Port Phillip and Western Port fi sherman” and last year at-tracted 2100 people in 845 boats.

Last year’s winner, Mark Sullivan of Tyabb, got an early start to hook his 10.5kg “big red” about 8am. As in previous years, the heaviest fi sh was caught in Western Port.

Fisheries offi cers will be out and about at boat ramps and popular fi shing spots during the com-petition to ensure competitors are fi shing within the rules. The bag limit for snapper is 10 fi sh at least 28cm long, only three of which may be sized 40cm or larger. Recreational anglers may not sell the fi sh they catch.

For the sixth year, the Tea Tree competition will have a rule that snapper must be at least 40cm to be accepted for weigh-in.

John Beasy of Snapper Point Angling Club said the minimum size was designed to decrease the overall number of fi sh taken during the tourna-ment.

He said discarded fi sh found fl oating in the bays had been a problem in past tournaments, but

he dismissed suggestions for a catch-and-release competition, saying it was “not viable”. Very few anglers knew how to safely release live snapper, he said.

November is when the best snapper catches are usually made in Port Phillip and Western Port, as adult fi sh enter the bays in large numbers to spawn. Catches of large snapper usually tail off at the end of summer, but good catches were main-tained throughout the winter just fi nished.

However, fi sheries researchers of the Depart-ment of Primary Industries have warned we could be coming to the end of a few years of bumper catches.

A DPI snapper fi shery forecast based on the number of baby snapper that settle in Port Phil-lip each year predicts smaller catches in coming seasons.

“The forecast for snapper fi shing in Port Phillip is for the recent exceptional catches to moderate over the next three years,” the report said.

It said snapper spawned in Port Phillip were the mainstay of Victoria’s western snapper stock, which extends from Wilsons Promontory to about the Murray River mouth in SA.

More than $120,000 of prizes is up for grabs in the Tea Tree competition, including three boats and all manner of fi shing tackle and boating ac-cessories. Winner of the heaviest fi sh also wins a wooden trophy carved by Mornington boatbuild-er Peter Adcock.

Entry is $60, or $30 for juniors. Forms are at tackle shops or online at www.teatreesnapper.org.au

AROUND THE REGION

By Jo WinterbottomA BIGGER part of the southern Mornington Peninsula has been declared an extreme fi re danger area for the coming fi re season.

Large areas of Sorrento and Portsea will be included on the extreme danger map for the fi rst time this year. Blairgowrie and the part of Rye from White Cliffs to Canterbury Jetty Rd will again be classifi ed an ex-treme risk, as they were last summer.

The CFA has called a public meeting in Sorrento on Satur-day 28 October to discuss the extreme danger rating.

Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley told a public meeting in Blairgowrie that Victorians had to accept that bushfi res were now a threat ev-ery summer.

“Our research has told us that it may take years before the Victorian community comes to terms with the annual threat of bushfi res,” he said.

Concerns over a helter-skel-ter fl ight to Port Phillip beaches were raised at the meeting ear-lier this month.

While Mornington Peninsula Shire had designated 12 Neigh-bourhood Safer Places where residents can marshal as a “last resort” during a bushfi re, Mr Lapsley said many residents would wait until the danger was extreme, then head for beaches, causing potentially catastrophic traffi c jams and other safety concerns.

“We will need to do further work to establish how this [evacuation to beaches] could be done safely,” he told the meeting at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron.

“I am aware that many peo-ple on the peninsula have ad-opted a wait-and-see strategy on high bushfi re risk days.

“If a bushfi re takes hold, it would move very quickly through coastal vegetation and if people are going to move to the bay beaches, they would need to do so early in the morn-ing and be prepared to stay on the beach all day and into the evening.”

The safest strategy for resi-dents in high-risk areas, espe-cially for families with young

children and the elderly, would be to leave the peninsula the day before a declared code red or extreme fi re danger day.

He singled out the area be-tween Melbourne Rd and Morn ington Peninsula Nation-al Park, which is packed with holiday houses, as of “major concern to our fi re fi ghters” and said permanent residents had an important role to play in educating visitors.

“When people come to the peninsula for holidays they tend not to read newspapers or listen to radio and televi-sion; they are in holiday mode and the bushfi re message does not reach many people in this group,” he said.

Mr Lapsley said high fuel loads in extreme risk areas had been allowed to build over “several decades”.

“We have identifi ed the fi re danger areas, but it will take a number of years to get this un-der control,” he said.

Murray Homes of Blairgow-rie Community Fire Preven-tion Action Group called for a plan to decrease fuel loads and reduce the fi re classifi cation from “extreme” to “moderate” within three years.

The situation on the penin-sula was complicated because there were four authorities re-sponsible for different areas – the shire, Parks, VicRoads and the Department of Sustainabil-ity and Environment, which in-cludes foreshore management committees.

It was further confused by the perceived competing inter-ests of conservationists and fi re prevention advocates.

He commended a shire fuel reduction scheme in Canterbury Jetty Rd, Blairgowrie, where undergrowth was being cleared from stands of Moonah trees, as “the basis for an agreement be-tween conservation groups and fi re prevention advocates”.

The meeting called for a fi re-break to be cleared between the national park and residential areas in Blairgowrie, Rye and Sorrento.

Frankston company out to ‘crush’ the USFrankston company out to ‘crush’ the USFRANKSTON-based Bin Buddie Com pany has developed, registered and patented a new product called Garden Bin Buddie.

The company says it was formed to manufacture and market an innova-tive and inexpensive garden and household tool in Australia, with the objective of tackling the mas-sive United States market. It has a design patent pending, has applied for a trademark in the US and has had interest from a number of American manufacturing companies as well as from one of the nation’s leading hardware retailers.

Garden Bin Buddie was created to assist homeowners to safely and eas-ily compress the contents of garden wheelie bin by up to 70 per cent, the company states.

“No more cuts and scratches from manually trying to crush the garden and grass clippings, and no more danger of falling while jumping in it to try and create more space in an overfl owing wheelie bin.

“People would be surprised at the number of householders who undertake this practice so they can get more of their garden rubbish collected each fortnight,” said Jimmy Rylands, owner of Nu Age Tube Bending, which manufactures Garden Bin Bud-die for the company.

“It ends in many broken bones and bruises, without even counting the serious cuts, scratches and infections that are often sustained by handling the sharp sticks, thorns and prickles in the garden waste.”

Mr Rylands said Garden Bin Bud-

die would work effectively on any wheelie bin so is useful in compacting general rubbish and recycled refuse bins as well, but it is on garden waste where it is really necessary.

“The garden bin is never big enough for the cuttings, clippings, fallen leaves and broken branches found even in smaller gardens,” he said.

“Garden Bin Buddie will allow the avid gardener to get so much more in their bin without causing it to become stuck. In two years of extensive test-ing on all types of waste bins, no bin compacted with a Garden Bin Buddie, either on garden or household waste, has ever failed to empty under normal collection conditions.”

Mr. Rylands said this is due to the unique tamper plate and lever design

of Garden Bin Buddie, which causes the contents to be “pulled away” from the bin walls, while also easily break-ing the sharp sticks and branches that are the main offenders in causing the rubbish to stay stuck in the bin during pickups.

The product isn’t available in stores yet, but is being offered to con-sumers via the internet or telephone ordering, with an offer of free home delivery in the Melbourne and Morn-ington Peninsula areas.

“At $49.95 including GST it is a robust, superbly designed, superbly manufactured product with a three-year guarantee.”

Bin Buddie can be contacted via www.binbuddie.com or by telephon-ing or faxing 9783 6422.

Time to refresh the Time to refresh the walls and buildingswalls and buildingsBy Ross of Rosco’s Paint PlaceTHIS issue I thought we’d tackle a signifi cant problem – chalky, weeping alkali, salt, lime scale and years of pollution that can make buildings and walls look dirty.

It’s time to refresh those surfaces. Let the exterior have a new lease of life by using the new Paint Place Bold and Vivid colours to grab attention.

A great product to use is E-B Emulsa-Bond, which has an excellent track record.

The job: After thoroughly cleaning the surfaces by hand brushing only and making sure all cracks and voids are taken care of, apply a 50-50 mixture of E-B Emulsa-Bond and acrylic paint. Apply by brush and roller. E-B Emulsa-Bond will make the paint fl ow into all of the

crevices and pinholes on stonework, and allow the paint to adhere tightly and evenly. Follow this with a top coat of quality acrylic Paint Place paint to complete the job.

The result: With the use of E-B Emulsa-Bond, excellent coverage and solid hiding is achieved. With only two coats and without using a special sealer or binder, the paint will stay fi rm and the paint fi lm even. It adheres tightly and resists cracking.

The bottom line: E-B Emulsa-Bond should add years to the life expectancy of paint work. It will save a substantial amount of money because the cost of sealers and binders is eliminated.

For help with this job or any others, speak to Rosco and the experts at Hastings Paint Place.

By Stuart McCulloughTHERE’S a moment when man and machine are so completely fused that it is no longer possible to tell where fl esh and bone end and steel and oil begin.

It’s a kind of alchemy that cannot be imitated and, once lost, can never be retrieved.

I had such a bond for a time. Not with a hotted up Commodore, Falcon or even the family Tarago. I had it with a ride-on lawn mower.

It wasn’t pretty and was far from sleek. To be honest, it was about as aerodynamic as a box of tissues and when it came to “torque” this thing was almost entirely mute. In terms of horsepower, it was a broken down old nag destined for the knackery. With a top speed of fi ve glorious kilometres per hour (downhill, with wind assis-tance), it was substantially slower than walking. That, however, was beside the point. Our ride-on lawn mower represented one thing – freedom.

In a house with two brothers and two sisters, opportunities for solitude were few and far between and mostly located in the bathroom. The hallway was like Flinders Street Station. And while the thunderbox was one of the few areas of the house that was not a thoroughfare, any respite it offered was necessarily brief. Were you to lin-ger for more than fi ve or so minutes, impatient little fi sts would begin to rap on the door and pointed questions

asked. At the time, I avoided answer-ing, but let me say now – for the re-cord – no, I had not fallen in. I was just trying to get a little peace and quiet.

We lived on 20 acres, most of which my father had fenced off for lawn. I can say with great certainty that it takes a very long time to mow that much grass. Like painting the Sydney Opera House, no sooner had you fi n-ished shearing the last blade than you had to return to the beginning and start over. In spring it was especially bad. The combination of warm weather and moisture meant that the grass re-grew within the hour. It was like trying to destroy the Robert Patrick T-1000 in Terminator 2. There hardly seemed any point in trying. It could be treach-erous, too. We lived on the remnants

of an old orchard, meaning that the landscape came in waves. You could easily become seasick just by taking a walk around the yard. It was worse on the mower. There were many trees and their skeletal branches would claw at you as you went past, ripping your T-shirt. Then there was the gulag.

The bottom right-hand corner of the yard was nearly always soaked through. Even during periods of drought. I’ve often suspected the day will come in which it will open up as a giant sinkhole and begin swallowing unsuspecting livestock. In fact, now that I think about it, everything I’ve ever misplaced may, in fact, have been swallowed by the gulag. It remains the case to this day that when you get to this part of the yard, you’ll likely fi nd

yourself beginning to sink well past your ankles as the ground prepares to swallow you whole. The risk was that once you rode to the right-hand corner on the lawnmower, you wouldn’t be able to get out. It never occurred to me to ask for help. Having to do so would be to surrender your freedom.

But as dangerous as it was, I was ready. The ride-on mower was a hulk-ing beast that sounded like the apoca-lypse once you got it going. However, getting it started was just the fi rst of many challenges. Frankly, keys and ignition switches are for lightweights. Real engines need a ripcord. The term ripcord is entirely appropriate as it ac-curately describes the injury caused to your shoulder. There were whole peri-ods of my youth during which I could barely lift a knife or fork due to rip-cord injuries and there was no shame greater than being unable to start the mower.

But once seated astride that mighty mechanical stead, the hours that fol-lowed were blissful. You even had to dress for the occasion. Using the ride-on lawnmower was always a gumboot job; although what use a thin layer of rubber was going to be against a rotat-ing metal blade probably doesn’t stand thinking about. We also wore special goggles and noise-reducing earmuffs. It was like having a microphone plugged into your eardrums. Despite the noise of the engine, the effect of the earmuffs was to put you inside

your own soundproof booth. As a re-sult, the hours I spent on the mower were often accompanied by loud and raucous singing. It is just as well we had no neighbours. There were, sadly, the occasional casualties. Stray tennis balls or plastic fi gurines came off not so much second best as a distant last when pitted against the mower’s steel blades of justice. Ordinarily, destroy-ing something belonging to a brother or sister would get you in trouble. Not when you were mowing, though. It was a little like having diplomatic im-munity.

When I got a driver’s licence, it was surely no coincidence that I bought a Daihatsu Charade – a car that had a lot in common with the ride-on lawn-mower, save that it wasn’t quite as fast. Leaving for university, I took the Charade. In truth, I should have taken the lawnmower. Instead, it remained in Tyabb to cut the lawn and do battle with the gulag. Each year, when spring rolls around and the scent of fresh-cut grass fi rst wafts in through the win-dow, I think about the lawnmower. It has been a very long time since I’ve had any lawn, much less a mower. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as peaceful as I did cutting the grass of our back yard. Perhaps I’ll volunteer. This sum-mer, as the day draws to a close in Tyabb, look for me sitting on top of a ride-on lawnmower, heading off into the sunset. Ride on.www.stuartmccullough.com

HASTINGS CRICKETBy Greg BradshawHASTINGS Firsts fi nally got to play cricket on the weekend after two week-ends of bad weather.

In the one-dayer substitute for the washed out two-day match versus Flin-ders, Hastings won the toss and batted fi rst.

Brad Watson and Issy Dias opened the batting with Dias being dismissed in the second over for a duck. Jake Hewitt joined Watson and they hit a quick/fi re 45 runs before Watson was out for a lusty 40, 2/52 off 9 overs.

From this point wickets fell at regular intervals with only Tim Birch showing any great resistance with 30 while Scott Phillips made 13 and Aaron Wil-son 10 as Hastings was dismissed for 113 in the 37th over.

As per previous seasons, Hastings’ bowling has been the side’s strength. Dias started with two wickets in his fi rst over, having 2/3 off his fi rst six. Phillips, who bowled fi rst change, also captured two wickets in his fi rst

over, and bowled two very quick spells taking 3/14.

Luke Hewitt bowled second change and joined the party, claiming a wicket in his second over.

At this stage Flinders was in tatters at 6/22 in only the 12th over. The tailenders showed some resistance, batting another 21 overs before Dias ran through them, fi nishing with 10 overs, 4 maidens, 5/10.

Flinders made 79. Hewitt fi nish ed with1/13 off 5 overs and Birch took 1/28 off 7 overs.

The bowlers from both teams were backed up by some sensational catching by their fi elders. This was a good fi rst-up win, but next week the team will have to bat 75 overs to win.

Hastings Seconds travelled to Flin-ders and batted fi rst. The blues started poorly, falling to 4/28 in the 12th over before Jason Slocombe (25) and Phil Stone steadied the ship, putting on a 77-run partnership with 8 overs to go. Stone batted brilliantly, smashing 83 before being bowled trying to get his century in the second-last over.

Hastings fi nished with 8/157 off its 40 overs. Morgan Darrer made 15.

The bowlers started well, having Flinders 2/12 in the 7th over but their three experienced batsman contributed to them getting over the line with one over to spare, 5/159.

Wickets were shared around with Wade Delahaye taking 2/50 off 10, Jake Ryan 1/29 off 10, Luke Gibbons 1/47 off 10 and Steve Thomson 0/25 off 9.

The Thirds played Boneo, which batted fi rst. Boneo slumped to 4/4 in the third over with Travis Hewitt taking two wickets in his fi rst over, then came a runout and Gavin Doig started with a wicket.

The next pair put on 50 before Boneo lost 5/22 being 9/76 after 30 overs. The last pair batted for 10 overs to reach 9/111. Hewitt fi nished with 2/14, Kevin Watson took 2/11 off 8, Dave Craig 1/12 off 4, Chris Marsh 1/20 off 6, Matt Sawosz 1/23 off 7 and Doig 1/22 off 7.

Hastings batted well, completing the run chase in the 24th over with Pat Foy

scoring an entertaining 49, Craig 22 and Glenn Jansz 14.

The Fourths played Carrum Downs away with Carrum Downs batting fi rst and smashing 199 off 29 overs. Chris Lehmann took 3/15 off 5, Aaron Vinson 3/30 off 5, Steven Robb 2/22 off 5, Nathan Goodacre 1/3 and Nishan Easwarapadacham 1/27 off 4 overs.

Hastings had 40 overs to chase down the runs. Lehmann opening the batting and smashed an impressive 53no, Vinson made 17, 3/88 in the 12th over. Nishan played a steady innings, making 53 retired, Kyle Robb hit a quick 21 and Goodacre struck the winning run and remained 18no.

Juniors: Hastings under-15s played Tyabb in a 20-over per side match with Tyabb batting fi rst and scoring 37. Wickets were shared around with Matt Foy taking 2/0, Andrew Jeffs 2/2, Jesse Moffatt 1/3, Sean Hewitt 1/5 and Brodie Prestage 1/5. Hastings batted well, scoring 4/57 in reply with Foy making 20 retired and Prestage 13 retired.

The under-13s played Crib Point in

the derby. Crib batted fi rst, scoring a very competitive 4/71 off 20 overs. Regan Taylor took 2/1, Thomas Finn 1/4 and Jackson Coles 1/7. Hastings batted well, scoring 2/98 to win the game. Shelby Lothian-Burdett hit 20 retired as did Ryan McNamara, and Coles made 12no.

The under-11s played Moorooduc on Friday night with Hastings scoring 7/121 off 20 overs with Devlin Webb making 18 retired, Pat Wilson 12 ret, Thomas Finn 16 ret and Thomas Buckley 4no. Moorooduc replied with 13/51, which included 9 runouts with Nicolas Gregg taking 1/4, Lochie Robertson 2/3 and Wilson 1/0.

The under-13 and 11s played in new shirts thanks to sponsors MB Plastering, and L Coopers Real Estate.

Bakers Delight Hastings is providing bread for afternoon teas for the season and Hastings Camping provided a gazebo for players and supporters who watch the cricket on the small oval.

Coming event: Melbourne Cup Day 6 November at the club starts at 12.30pm.

PROVINCIALBy IT GullySORRENTO coach Nick Jewell made it two centuries in as many innings when he blasted 128 in his side’s vic-tory over Long Island in MPCA Pro-vincial cricket.

Opening the innings, Jewell treated the Islanders’ bowlers with contempt before eventually falling to spinner Greg Lamb.

Lamb snared all fi ve of Sorrento’s wickets, but it failed to prevent a com-fortable fi ve-wicket victory.

Chasing just 126 for the win, Sorren-to fi nished on 5/205 in the 55th over.

Leigh Poholke scored 31 for the Sharks and Jedd Falck opened with 27.

Lamb was the best of the Long Island bowlers, snaring 5/73 off 16 overs.

Sorrento had a sneak peak at a pos-sible outright victory, sending the Is-landers back in, but Justin Bridgeman

(42no) and Paul Hartle (9no) dug deep. Peter Connell retired hurt.

Newcomers to Provincial cricket Mt Eliza sits at the top of the ladder after knocking over Mt Martha.

In a one-day match because of last week’s washout, the Reds won the toss and elected to bat. They were bowled out in the 40th over for just 128.

Mitch Darville was the best of the Mt Martha batsman with 50, and skipper Chris Holcombe contributed 22.

Lyle House was once again the de-stroyer for the Mounties with 4/32 from seven overs, and Justin Savio snared 3/22 from 9.5 overs after open-ing the bowling.

Mt Eliza had little trouble chasing the total, passing it with three overs to spare.

Shane Speedie opened with 41 and Jason Mathers continued his good form with 34.

Jordan Pomeroy was exceptional

with the ball for the Reds, taking 2/15 from 10 overs.

Along with Mt Eliza and Sorrento, Baxter remains the only other unde-feated side in Provincial after knocking over Mornington.

Chasing 196 for victory, the reigning champions got the runs with 12 overs up their sleeve. In fact, they batted on and scored 275.

Shane McComb opened with 61 and Trav Sawers hit them as well as he has for a couple of seasons, scoring 60.

Leigh Paterson got among the runs for Baxter with 37 and Dale Irving contributed 29.

Matt and Luke Harper picked up two wickets each for the Doggies.

Peninsula Old Boys makes up the top four after defeating Rye.

The game was restricted to a one-dayer, POB batting fi rst and scoring 6/210 in its 40 overs.

Dylan O’Malley opened the innings

with 46, keeper Wade Pelzer scored a half century and Johnny Forrest was superb at the end of the innings with 58.

Rye skipper Darren Groves opened the bowling and snared 1/35 from eight overs. Tommy Barrand was the pick of the Demons’ attack with 2/60.

Glenn Prendergast was the unlikely match winner for POB with the ball, grabbing 3/20 off three overs. The De-mons were bowled out for 167 in the last over.

Ben Ashworth scored 54 for the De-mons to be their most productive bats-man, while Rhys Wynne scored 34 and Aaron Vernon 26.

Crib Point completed the expected and cruised to victory against Heath-erhill.

Chasing 172 for victory, the Magpies got over the line with eight wickets in hand.

Henry Dolphin scored 66 when

opening the innings, Matty Blake hit 46, Adam Keulen 41no and skipper Luke Herrington made it a thoroughly enjoyable day for the batsmen with an unbeaten 48.

Brad Maxwell and Matty Meagher were the two wicket-takers for the Heatherhill.

Moorooduc recruit Stuart Plunkett was the star of the show in the side’s victory over Ballam Park.

Plunkett starred with the ball, bowl-ing 10 overs and fi nishing with the im-pressive fi gures of 5/27, before open-ing the innings with the bat and scoring 24.

Moorooduc bowled out the Knights in the 38th over for 119, before passing the total in the 37th over.

Shane Garlick top-scored for the Ducs with 36, and Matt Mitchell help-ed himself to 31.

SUB-DISTRICTBy IT GullyTOOTGAROOK is the only MPCA Sub-district side with two wins from two matches after getting the points against French Island.

The Tooters had already won the match after week one having bowling out the opposition for just 44.

Although they had passed the total last weekend, as expected, Tootgarook batted on to build an outright win to-tal. They also gave Luke Thompson every opportunity to get to 100. He was removed for 79.

Declaring at 3/170, the home side sent the Islanders back in.

This time, French Island offered some resistance, making 205.

Skipper Matt Spark made 57, Ben King 46 batting at three and Matt Ho-

sken kept the tail wagging with a half century at number nine.

With fi ve overs left in the match, Tootgarook needed 80 runs to win outright.

They did okay, scoring at 10 runs an over and fi nishing the fi ve overs on 4/50.

Red Hill recruit Simon Dart hit another century on Saturday while fellow opener Riley Shaw scored an unbeaten 93 as the Hillmen fi nished 0/208 in the match against Skye.

Skye had a fair dinkum crack at the total, falling short by just 20-odd runs.

The visitors got away to a fl yer, skipper Jason Hartigan scoring 71 and Davyd Stockman 37. Skye lost its fi rst wicket with the score on 73 and its second when the score had past 100.

However, it was all downhill from there. Red Hill quick Luke Doyle

snaring 3/28, Andrew Mock 2/47 and Ross Corfi eld 2/28.

As expected, Rosebud went for the outright win against Dromana but the Hoppers hung tough.

After Dromana scored just 55 in the fi rst innings, the Buds went about scoring runs quickly, compiling 3/190 in 29 overs. Skipper Darren Kerr scored 80 and Mat Maher 62.

Dromana number four batsman An-drew Thomson was the thorn in Rose-bud’s side in the second innings

The Buds had the opposition 4/22 before Thomson and Zacc Klan (30) dug in.

Skipper Jason Clarke offered some resistance at the end with 21.

Rosebud opening bowler Jason Nagel fi nished with match fi gures of 12/63 after picking up four of the six Dromana second-innings wickets.

Balnarring picked up its fi rst win in some time after getting the points against Tyabb.

Batting fi rst, Balnarring scored 9/152 in 40 overs, Chris Murphy top-scoring with 42.

Tyabb opening bowler Nathan Hudgson took 3/22 to be the pick of the bowlers.

In the chase, the Yabbies could only muster 127 in 38 overs. Luke Rus top-scored with 40.

Luke Chapple was the best of the Balnarring bowlers with 4/27 and Jacob Cook picked up 4/43 from 9.4 overs.

In a less than ordinary game of cricket, Seaford Tigers beat Carrum Downs by just 18 runs – 59 to 77.

Both sides batted again, which add-ed some intrigue, but it was the disas-trous fi rst innings of Carrum Downs

that brought about the result. The Cougars batted fi rst and at

one stage were 6/19 before the tail wagged. Chamara Perera top-scored with 15, batting at nine.

Corey Hand and Tom Sinclair each picked up four wickets for the Tigers.

Seaford got away to a reason-able start before losing 6/23 midway through the innings.

Perera did the damage with the ball for the Cougars, picking up 5/20.

The Cougars hit 138 in its second in-nings before sending Seaford in to try for a reverse outright.

However, Ash Mills was solid at the top of the order with 37. The Tigers collapsed, losing 6/22, but managed to hold on. Ryan Lynch took three second-innings wickets for Carrum Downs.

DISTRICTBy IT GullyLANGWARRIN sits at the top of the MPCA District table as the only unde-feated side after two rounds.

Coming off two grand fi nal losses in two seasons, the Kangas shook things up in the off-season in the hope of get-ting a different result in 2012-13.

So far, so good for Langwarrin, scoring 7/307 on Saturday against Main Ridge.

Chasing 149 for victory, Langwarrin passed the total with just two wickets down.

Andrew Johnson came in at four and, after snaring two wickets last week, cracked 115 runs with the bat to take man of the match honours.

Ben Wells found some much-need-ed form with 49 runs, Simon McE-

voy opened with 45, Jake Prosser has started the season well with 33 and Mal Coutts was unbeaten at the end with 32.

Former Wedgewood medallist Dan-ny Weare scored 33 in his comeback match in the seconds.

Boneo has started the season in wonderful fashion, getting the job done against Baden Powell.

After bowling out the Braves for just 102, Boneo went about doing a num-ber on the opposition, eventually scor-ing 6/215.

Skipper and former Frankston play-er Leigh Lowry did as he liked, scor-ing 109 from 265 balls. He hit 14 fours and two sixes.

Teenager Jack Fowler hit three fours and four sixes on his way to 48, bat-ting at seven, while Ryan Jellie (22) and Matt Rogers (25) both had some

time in the middle. Brendan Jovic was the best of the Braves bowlers with 3/58.

Former Langwarrin skipper Nathan Volpe turned it on for his new club Seaford on Saturday, taking out the man of the match with 34 runs and 5/11 off nine overs against Delacombe Park, including the prized wickets of Chris Brittain and Simon Dignan.

Chasing 200 for victory, Delacombe Park was rolled for just 73 in 34 overs. Jon Guthrie was the highest scorer with 12.

Seaford sent the Parkers straight back in and they batted for another 32 overs, fi nishing at 5/93.

It was an easy victory for Seaford and the team sits in third place on the table.

Hastings is in fourth place after an easy win against Flinders.

It wasn’t the highest quality match, Hastings winning with a score of 113. Recruit Brad Watson was the best of the Hastings bats with 40 and Tim Birch scored 30.

Shane Beggs was the pick of the Flinders bowlers with 4/31, and Adam Mirabella snared 3/19 from eight overs.

Hastings quick Isuru Dias then made light work of the Flinders batting line-up, ripping through with 5/10, and Scott Phillips picked up 3/14.

Flinders was bowled out in the 32nd over, Nathan Hunt top-scoring with 34.

Carrum successfully defended its 152, bowling out Somerville for 124 in the 54th over.

Teenagers Lachy Dobson and Jack-son Fry picked up two wickets each for the Lions and Cory Foster snared

three. Ben Delaney topped the card for the Eagles with 48, Nick Marshall was looking the goods before being run-out for 27 and Craig Black hit 23. Keith Burdett was picked up by Foster for a duck.

Pines got the 12 points against Frankston YCW but it came after a big fright.

Defending 250, Pines got home in the 74th over, bowling out the Ston-ecats for 221.

Luke Hutchison wound back the clock for the Stonecats with 93, while 17-year-old Jack Greenwood hit 33 and the evergreen Craig Burch made a nuisance of himself at the end with 45.

Brett Remy was the pick of the Pin-ers’ bowlers with 5/56 from 22 overs, while Nick Wilcox and Ricky Rams-dale each snared two wickets.

CRAIG Williams has Cox Plate vic tories to his credit on Fields Of Omagh (2006) and Pinker Pinker (2011) so he knows all about winning Australasia’s most prestigious weight-for-age event.

Now Williams, who was born and raised in Cranbourne, is hoping his judgement will be vindicated when Sat ur-day’s renewal comes around at Moonee Valley.

Faced with a diffi cult de-cision, Wil liams chose the imported Green Moon ahead of the exciting three-year-old Pierro.

“It was virtually impossible to com pare them because I hadn’t ridden Pierro,” Wil-liams said.

“But I have ridden Green Moon in his four races this year and would rate him a fi ve lengths better horse than when I fi rst rode him in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington in March.

“That plus the fact he has 59kg when I would have had to waste severely to ride Pierro at 49.5kg made the difference.

“The Cox Plate is usually a hard-fought affair and Green Moon is a horse I am happy to

go to war with.”Green Moon, who is raced

by former Crown Casino boss Lloyd Williams, stamped his Cox Plate credentials by scor-ing an authoritative win in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Fle mington on 6 October. He raced three wide throughout and was going better on the line than any of his rivals.

On this basis, his stamina won’t be an issue and he has the tactical speed to race in a forward position if Williams wishes.

On the other hand, the boom sur rounding Pierro was pricked when his colours were lowered by All To Hard in the Caulfi eld Guineas on 13 October.

There were excuses for his effort, but it did raise a ques-tion over whether he would run the 2040 metres of the Cox Plate.

However, supporters of Pierro can take solace from the fact that both Octagonal (1995) and So You Think (2009) won the Cox Plate after being beaten in the Caulfi eld Guineas.

Racing’s No 1 woman train-er Gai Waterhouse has a par-ticularly strong hand this year with More Joyous and Proisir backing up Pierro.

A winner of eight group one races, More Joyous was

fi fth behind So You Think two years ago but prospects diminished when easily beaten into fourth place in the Toorak Handicap (1600m).

At the same time she has proven to be an elite performer so can never be underrated.

Like Pierro and More Joy-ous at their most recent out-ing, Proisir was a short-priced favourite when beaten into second place behind It’s A Dundeel in the Spring Cham-pion Stakes (2000m) at Rand-wick.

All Too Hard, who is Black Caviar’s half-brother, will certainly be among the main chances if connections press ahead. A slow maturing type, he show ed he is benefi ting from patient handling by com-ing from last to capture the Caulfi eld Guineas, giving the impression the Cox Plate dis-tance won’t be a problem.

Kiwi four-year-old Ocean Park has an impeccable record so far this season. After win-ning in New Zealand, he came across the Tasman to score resolute victories in the Under-wood Stakes (1800m) and the Caulfi eld Stakes (2000m).

Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell won last year’s Cox Plate with Pinker Pinker and the region will have two wor-thy contenders this year in the Mornington-trained Rekindled

Interest and Ethiopia.Rekindled Interest, who is in

the stable of Jim Conlan, was an unlucky third last year and indicated he is racing in simi-lar vein with a stout third in the Dato Tan Stakes at Moonee Valley in September. He then fl opped in the Turnbull Stakes, but this poor performance can be blamed on racing in the worst part of the track.

This year’s Australian Derby winner Ethiopia, who is in the care of Pat Carey, stormed home when sixth in the Turn-bull Stakes. This was only his second start in the preparation and he will go into the Cox Plate with stamina very much on his side.

Now that Craig Williams has won the Caulfi eld Cup on Du-naden, he has another opportu-nity to achieve a unique feat.

After winning last year’s

Caulfi eld Cup on Southern Speed he took the Cox Plate on Pinker Pinker.

Then a suspension – incurred at Bendigo – cost him the win-ning ride on Dunaden in the Melbourne Cup.

Achieving the next step in his attempt to be one of the few jockeys to win the “Triple Crown” depends on Green Moon on Saturday.

But if he is successful Williams will go into the Melbourne Cup brimful of confi dence because Dunaden could have hardly been more impressive.

He produced a performance rarely seen in a major race when he stormed home from near last to score in effortless fashion. His effort was even more dominant when it is con-sidered he was carrying 58kg.

Horses to catch my eye as

potential winners over the next few weeks are Catered, Crystal Web, Subiaso, Sum-merbliss, Gondokoro, Galah, Altar, Extra Zero, My Quest for Peace, Pear Tart, Soft Sand City Of Song, Pharo-mac, Cheviot Beach, Specter, Dear Demi, Mabsam, Mena-dos and Zuma Roc.

Best: Dear Demi.

ON THE LINEBy Paul “Tracker” Pingiaro

IT’s not the fi sh that are hard to catch at the mo-ment, it’s the fi ne weather when you get a day off.

When you get on the wa-ter it becomes even more important to make the most of your time. Anglers often head out with only one type of bait; this can be a big mistake as fi sh often will only eat one type of offering, totally ignoring other baits.

It’s critical to have a good spread of baits to fi nd the fl avour of the day. For example, if you’re after snapper, a good early sea-son spread would be squid, pilchards, silver whiting and soury. This should be supplemented with a good quality burley.

Baits should be fi shed with as little lead as possi-ble as this presents the bait in the most natural form.

When using burley in light currents, spread from the top to the bottom. Throw pellets directly over the side and as they sink, they burley the entire water column.

If you’re using frozen tubes, simply tie them off against the side of the boat and as they thaw they will

disintegrate and disperse through the water column.

When you’re fi shing fast-er water, the best position for burley is the top of your anchor chain. As the boat moves up and down it lifts the chain, which shakes the burley pot and aids in the dispersion.

What’s bitingSnapperIn Port Phillip the snap-per are still a bit up and down; this is simply due to weather patterns. However some great catches of fi sh are coming from Mt Mar-

tha to Chelsea. It would be fair to say the fi sh are pretty much everywhere but getting them to bite has been a little harder. While the surface temperature is getting higher, it’s still cold at the bottom. My No 1 tip for this time of year is patience.

In Western Port, snapper are feeding a little bit more freely. Spots worth a try include between Hastings and Warneet.

Land anglers can try the rocks at Mt Martha and Mornington, which are

producing some nice fi sh. Brighton and Mordialloc are also worth a try.WhitingThe whiting are back up and about with some great catches. In Port Phillip good catches have been made from Portsea to Mt Eliza. The best baits have been mussels, squid and pippies. Burley has been very effective in bringing the fi sh on. In Western Port, we have seen some monster “ting” with a few fi sh to 52cm being landed. Watsons Inlet has contin-ued to fi re, and best baits have been pippies and mussels. SquidWhile starting to slow a bit in southern Port Phillip there are still some lovely specimens being caught. The piers at Sorrento, Port-sea and Blairgowrie are fi ring at night. In Western Port, Stony Point to Tyabb continues to see squid to 3kg. Best results are on Hirate squid jigs and silver whiting. For the land-based in Western Port, Stony Point has been the pier of choice as Flinders and Warneet continue to be hit and miss.FlatheadSome great catches of fl at-

ties to 40cm have come from Mornington in 10-18 metres using squid and silver whiting. In Western Port, Quail Bank has seen some sand and rock fl at-head landed to 45cm, with best baits being mussels and pilchards.Yaringa HarbourLast week we saw King George whiting to 52cm, grass whiting to 40cm, gurnard to 55cm, garfi sh to 52cm, fl athead to 45cm, squid to 2kg, gummy sharks to 10kg, snapper to 5kg. The fi shing has been good considering the weather and will only get better. Best places to wet a line have been Watsons Inlet, Eagle Rock, 18m off Tyabb and Quail Bank.Tight lines and calm seas. Paul “Tracker” Pingiaro has been fi shing since he could hold a rod and stay in the boat. He has boat hire businesses in Morn-ington and Yaringa Boat Harbour in Somerville. driving for years and developed survival skills that only come with experience, and, may I say, a little luck.

Some have driven to work in peak hour, have travelled interstate numerous times, both in daylight and in darkness, with little more than a fl at tyre to ruin the trip.

Now you are getting ready for retirement or have decided the kids need a more comfortable place to sleep when on holidays. The next step up from the trusty tent trailer or camper is a caravan. What size? What layout? How heavy? Pop-top or a full caravan? Does it need to have a shower and toilet? How do I connect it? How should I tow it?

These and many other questions can be answered by attending a four-hour caravan towing course.

At Utow Caravans we have Certifi cate 4 trainers who can provide the information that you need to get started on the road to success.

Our course covers areas such as: Compatibility of driver and vehicle, car and caravan.

Hitch types and applications. Weight distribution types including sway control. Caravan weights – loading, ball weight, legal limitations. Safety, servicing, travelling on the road, site selection and various state road laws relating to towing.

We have the training and qualifi cation to test and tag your electrical items. Most caravan parks now require the external lead to be tested and

tagged for safety. But are your inside electrical appliances still safe?

U-Tow Caravans can do servicing for your caravan at our premises.

We also have a wide range of caravan accessories at 25 Simcock Street, Somerville.

We can be contacted on www.utowcaravans.com, email [email protected], or phone 5978 0083 or0400 777 698.

MT Martha Retirement Village is a well-designed, environ-mentally friendly and ideally positioned retirement village complex.

The village is the desire of many people who have spent time on the Mornington Pen-insula and can now retire to a secure facility suited to them.

The peninsula, just over an hour’s drive from the city on Melbourne’s “doorstep”, and is rightfully described as Melbourne’s playground. It is one the most popular informal recreational areas in Victoria and will become more popular with the opening of Peninsula Link freeway in early 2013.

The village is quite differ-ent from existing facilities in the region as it provides a distinctly higher standard of accommodation and is one of few villages with its own fully accredited residential aged care facility.

The village provides in-dependent living options for older Australians on the penin-sula and allows local residents and second home owners, who would otherwise focus outside the area for a suitable retirement village facility, to stay connected to their com-munity and families, while also attracting new retirees to the area.

Accessible from the village is a health club including a

large indoor pool as well as a large recreational park.

Mt Martha Village features: Sympathetically designed village. High-quality furnishings and fi ttings. Extensive landscaping to enhance the environmental values of the site. Five-star water and energy use requirements. Total site accessibility for all levels of mobility, including people using a wheelchair or walking frames.

The village is close and accessible to the town centre, retail outlets, recreational

facilities, medical facilities and restaurants.

The village meets the long-term strategic planning requirements of both local and state governments.

It meets the needs of the community, especially retirees, through provision of this development. Retirees today are looking for a lifestyle that offers comfort, convenience, security and quality facili-ties for recreation and social living.
