2 AG ROUNDUP OCTOBER 2020

By Anna Dragseth

MonDak area sugar beet receiving stations have been receiving truckloads of sugar beets since the end of September.

The Sugar Valley site kicked off sugar beet pre-pile on Monday, Sept. 21. Followed by the Sidney factory yard, which began on Wednesday, Sept. 23, and the Savage site, Friday, Sept. 25; Culbertson and Pleasant View started pre-pile on Monday, Sept. 28.

As of Tuesday, Sept. 29, Duane Peters, Sidney Sugars Incorporated Agricul-ture Manager, estimated harvest to be “roughly 10% complete.”

Peters explained that the area had to stop pre-pile on Tuesday, Sept. 29, due to warm root temperatures. “We are shutting down due to the warm temperatures of the beets. When they go to stockpile, some of them will not be processed until January or February, so we would like them to be at an internal temperature of 55º or less,” stated Peters.

The high internal temperature of the beets is caused by the dry soil – when the soil is dry it prevents the root temperatures from cooling down. So therefore, they have to put off pre-pile until those temperatures decrease.

On a positive note, Peters explained that the sugar content of the harvested

is very good for the start of harvest. We are seeing sugars beyond our expectations. Some areas have had over 20% sugars. We are averaging 18.81 sugar and we are very happy to see that this time of year,” said Peters.

He explained that the sugar content usually increases later in harvest, but because of the frost /freeze, the area had at the beginning of the month, those sugar levels were high.

Peters added that the tons of beets are averaging around 29 tons, as of Tues-day, Sept. 29. He explained that they predicted 31.5 tons, but the current number of tons is expected to increase as harvest continues.

Peters hopes that everyone has a “safe and bountiful harvest.” He said,” We would like to remind area drivers that the beet harvest is on, and those beet trucks

for the next few weeks.”

North Dakota producers need to be vigilant about keeping Palmer amaranth, a particular noxious weed, off their land, ac-cording to North Dakota State University Extension specialists.

This weed has been found in new North Dakota counties every year since 2018, and 2020 was no exception.

One source of introduction in 2020 was through con-taminated grain screenings. Samples pulled from a pile of

seeds per pound of screenings from one source. In one case, screenings had been fed to cattle and Palmer

“This serves as a reminder that grain screenings can be a major pathway of Palmer amaranth introduction into the state, especially if the screenings originated from areas of thecountry where Palmer amaranth is the most abundant weed,” says Joe Ikley, Extension weed specialist.

“Grain screenings are usually a price-competitive source

Great Falls, MT- COVID-19 has disrupted the agricultural sector in a variety of ways. The pandemic has exposed a break in the food supply chain that was compounded by the loss of foreign trade, low farm gate prices, and multinational packing plant disruptions. This pandemic also highlighted the importance of access to rural broadband and rural healthcare. Montana Farmers Union held a series of town halls with Senator Tester along with candidates for governor, U.S. Congress, U.S. Senate where they discussed the effects of the pandemic on agriculture. The town halls also focused on Country-of-Origin Labeling, trade, corporate consolida-tion, locally grown opportunities, renewable fuels and climate change. Candidate for congress Matt Rosendale refused to participate.

The virtual town halls are open to the public and will be posted online at

Montana Farmers Union President Walter Schweitzer served as moderator. “We appreciate Senator Tester, Senator Daines, Representative Gianforte, Gover-nor Bullock, Lt. Governor Mike Cooney and candidate Kathleen Williams for taking the time to participate in the town halls. I am disappointed that Matt Rosendale refused to discuss rural and ag issues last spring and again this fall. The issues discussed affect not just rural Montana, but all Montanans.”

On the topic of food security and truth in labeling Lt. Governor and candidate for Governor Mike Cooney said he is in favor of truth in labeling and sees real value in the Montana made product. “People are concerned with their food security,” said Cooney. “They want to know how it was produced and they are willing to pay for that. I would rather see the dollars paid for these products going back to the producers rather than some middle man.”

The group also met with Representative and candidate for Governor Greg Gianforte. He does not support mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling but he does support requiring the voluntary label “Product of USA” to be born, raised and slaughtered here in the U.S.

On the issue of access to rural broadband, candidate for Congress Kathleen Williams said the Broadband DATA Act recently passed by Congress is a step in

the right direction, but more needs to be done to help rural communities.“ One of

Senatorial candidates Governor Steve Bullock and Senator Steve Daines dis-cussed their work at the state and federal level in regards to rural and Ag issues.

On the issue of reductions in service in the U.S. Postal Service, Senator Daines acknowledged the vital role that the USPS plays in rural Montana and said that he is not in favor of privatizing the agency.

When Daines was asked about “Right to Repair” he said he was not familiar with the issue and he would have his staff look into it.

Senator Jon Tester also discussed the affects that the reduction in servicethat the USPS can have on rural Montana. “The postal service has been underattack since I got here in 2007,” said Senator Tester. “There are a lot of people

The Montana State University Eastern Agricultural Research Center has been harvesting sugar beet plots since Monday, Sept. 21. Chengci Chen, MSU EARC superintendent and cropping systems agronomist, explained that harvest has been going smoothly for the center thus far.

“The scholarship donors that we honor each year at Celebrate Agriculture truly change the lives of so many of our students,” said Bajwa, who also serves as College of Agriculture Montana Agriculture Experiment Station dean and di-

and recognition of the importance of agriculture that makes so much of what we do possible.”

Virtual content for Celebrate Agriculture will be available Nov. 13 on the Collegeof Agriculture website, http://agriculture.montana.edu/celebrateag. The weekend will also include the annual Science as Art Contest for MSU agriculture students, who are tasked with translating their perceptions of science and agriculture into art projects using a variety of media.
