National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships (NSF GRFP)

The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base in biological science, technology, engineering, mathematics, physical science, earth science, and social science in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study.

General Fellowship Opportunities

American Association of University Women (AAUW) American

Dissertation Fellowships Dissertation Fellowships offset a scholar’s living expenses while she completes her dissertation. The fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation. Applicants must have completed all course work, passed all preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposals or plans by the preceding November. The program provides fellowships for women pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math fields or researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.

AAUW’s Career Development Grants provide assistance to women who, through additional higher education, technical training, or participation in professional development institutes, are making career changes, seeking to advance in current careers, or reentering the workforce. American-Scandinavian Fellowship and Grants to Study in Scandinavia The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships (up to $23,000) and

grants (up to $5,000) to individuals to pursue research, study or creative arts projects in

one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Grants are considered suitable for

post-graduate scholars, professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or

study visits of one to three months duration.

Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship In honor of Dr. Maria Teresa Velez, Associate Dean, University of Arizona Graduate College, and her lifelong commitment to promoting graduate student diversity and inclusion and pushing for the highest of excellence, the Graduate College established the Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship. This award is given annually to a doctoral student who, through their teaching, research, or outreach and service, has demonstrated a commitment to furthering diversity in education, higher education, and the community at large. The award consists of $25,000 plus full base graduate tuition and student health insurance (excluding mandatory registration fees and any differential tuition) for one year only. The selected Fellow may not hold concurrent graduate assistant/associateships or student wage positions or defer the award for the following year.

Environment & Society Graduate Fellows Program (UA) The Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) program is currently accepting applications for the 2020 Environment & Society Graduate Fellows Program. This fellowship supports currently enrolled University of Arizona graduate students from any degree-granting program whose work is focused on the nexus of environmental research and decision making. The Environment & Society Fellowship provides an opportunity for graduate students to develop their knowledge, training, and experience in applied environmental science and outreach. Projects should incorporate a use-inspired research approach meaning that the project meets a need expressed by a stakeholder (an organization, community, or person affected by your research outcomes).

EPA People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Student Design Competition

EPA's P3 - People, Prosperity and the Planet – Program is a unique competition that is open to teams of college/university students working to design solutions for a sustainable future. P3 offers students hands-on experience that brings their classroom learning to life, while also allowing them to create tangible changes in their communities. This annual, two-phased research grants program challenges students to research, develop, and design innovative projects that address real world challenges involving all areas of environmental protection and public health.

Faculty for the Future The Faculty for the Future grant program seeks to positively impact gender balance in

science disciplines by reinforcing the presence and qualifications of women university

teachers in developing and emerging economies. We firmly believe that better gender

Good Works College Scholarship

Students who are dedicated to making their community a better place by planning community service projects are cordially invited to join its the Good Works College Scholarship. The program is being designed by the Fairfax criminal defense attorney Karin Riley Porter. The candidates who will fit in the awards are an undergraduate, graduate, and law school students, and incoming college freshmen at an accredited U.S. educational institution. They also need to be in good academic standing to apply.

Health Equity Internship Program The Health Equity Internship Program was created to support the diversification of the public health and health-related workforce. Like several areas of health, the public health nutrition workforce also needs assistance with diversification and recruiting a new generation of nutritional professionals. Since 2002, the internship program has prepared nearly 1,000 students with practical skills in the Essentials of Public Health Services and Core Competencies of Health Education and Promotion. Federal, regional, state and local health agencies provide real-world work experience to students for 12-weeks to complete health equity projects in the areas of HIV, Cancer, Obesity, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Lupus, Nutrition, Mental Health, Program Planning, Health Policy, Tobacco, Injury/Violence Prevention, Aging, and more.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (also for the Humanities) The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship Program provides recent PhD recipients and ABDs (please see program eligibility requirements) with opportunities to conduct research in Japan under the leadership of a host researcher. Fellows are encouraged to advance their own research and at the same time closely collaborate with young Japanese researchers and contribute to Japanese research communities. Applications are welcome from all social science and humanities

National Institute of Justice Research Assistantship Program The NIJ Research Assistantship Program (RAP) offers highly qualified doctoral students the opportunity to bring their expertise to NIJ to work across offices and program areas to obtain a practical and applied research experience. The RA program is a research focused professional development opportunity for doctoral students. We welcome students from all academic disciplines to apply who wish to connect their research to the criminal justice field.

Presidential Management Fellowship The Program attracts and selects the best candidates possible to develop a cadre of potential government leaders. It provides some sustenance during the first years of employment and encourages development of leadership capabilities. Fellows are hired at the civil service ranks of GS-09, GS-11, or GS-12 (or equivalent pay band, depending on agency) with Excepted Service appointment status at the beginning of the Fellowship. Following satisfactory completion of each year of the Fellowship, Fellows are eligible for promotion to the next GS level (or equivalent pay band, depending on agency) but cannot be promoted higher than GS-13 during the Fellowship. After successful completion of the Fellowship, agencies may noncompetitively appoint Fellows to permanent positions and grant Fellows career or career-conditional status.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows The fellowship supports a 12-month residential experience in Washington, D.C., with additional support for health policy leadership development activities. The program seeks exceptional mid-career health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care, and prepares individuals to influence the future of health care and accelerate their own career development. Applicants must have earned an advanced degree in one of the following disciplines: allied health professions; biomedical sciences; dentistry; economics or other social sciences; health services organization and administration; medicine; nursing; public health; social and behavioral health; or health law.

Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses von Berlin (for study in Berlin) The Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses von Berlin sponsors a scholarship program for students and young scholars of all fields from France, Great Britain, the United States, Russia and other successor states of the former Soviet Union. Applicants should work on projects that require access to research facilities in Berlin. The scholarships are awarded according to various criteria, including academic merit and civic engagement. During their 10-month stay grant winners will not only experience their research areas from an international perspective, but also the political, cultural and social dimensions of public life in Berlin.

UA Water Resources Research Institute Small Research Grants The University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) invites proposals for research grants under the Water Resources Research Act, Section 104(b). Proposals are requested for research that explores new ideas to address water problems in Arizona and expand understanding of water and related phenomena. Grants of under $10,000 are encouraged. Research proposals will be considered from the social, biological, physical, and engineering sciences, including water management, water law, and public health. Proposals should demonstrate that projects will foster improvements in water supply, addressing issues of water yield and water reliability, water quality, treatment, infrastructure, and assessment of management practices.

Boren Awards Graduate Fellowship The Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad. The Boren Fellowships are designed to give graduate students maximum flexibility to pursue their academic goals alongside their study of the target language. Boren Fellows may concentrate only on language study during their time abroad—such an application will be given equal consideration. Language study throughout the duration of the grant may be supplemented with any or all of the following activities: Academic Internship, Classroom Study, or Research.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature. In the current Newcombe competition, at least 20 non-renewable fellowships of $25,000 will be awarded for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing; in addition, Fellows' graduate schools will be asked to waive tuition and/or remit some portion of their fees.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers Multi-Country Research

Fellowship The CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their PhD. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Approximately eight awards of up to $11,000 each will be given. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Dynamic Language Infrastructure-Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement

Grants This program supports doctoral research focusing on building dynamic language infrastructure (DLI). Developing language infrastructure includes the documentation and preservations of languages in ways that articulate or advance linguistic theory, as well as the use of digitization techniques and novel computational methods that support and advance the study of language. Special emphasis is given to human languages that are endangered, i.e., understudied and at risk of falling out of use. The program supports the development of the next generation of researchers that contribute to language data management and archiving, and to the analysis of these archives to advance language infrastructure. Funding in this solicitation is in the form of doctoral dissertation research improvement grants (DDRIs) for up to 24 months and this solicitation addresses the preparation and evaluation of proposals for DDRI proposals.

Getty Foundation Graduate Internships Getty Graduate Internships are offered in the four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust—the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Foundation, as well as in Getty Publications—to students who intend to pursue careers in fields related to the visual arts. Training and work experience placements are available in areas such as curatorial, education, conservation, research, information management, public programs, and grantmaking. Internships are located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles or the Getty Villa in Malibu.

Hagley Center for Business, Technology, and Society Dissertation

Fellowships Henry Belin du Pont Dissertation Fellowships are designed for graduate students who have completed all course work for the doctoral degree and are conducting research on their dissertation. We invite applications from Ph.D. candidates whose research on important historical questions would benefit from use of Hagley's research collections. This is a residential fellowship with a term of four months. The fellowship provides $6,500, free housing on Hagley's grounds, use of a computer, mail and internet access, and an office.

History of Art: Institutional Fellowships Advanced training in European art history requires direct exposure to the object of study, prolonged access to key information resources such as libraries and photographic archives, the development of professional relationships with colleagues abroad, and sustained immersion in European cultures. These related needs are often best satisfied by extended engagement with a European art research center. The Kress History of Art: Institutional Fellowships are intended to provide promising young art historians with the opportunity to experience just this kind of immersion.

Humane Studies Fellowship Humane Studies Fellows not only gain financial aid, but also connect with IHS and our network of scholars working to advance classical liberal ideas in the academy. This

includes access to academic advising and invitations to our career development seminars, research workshops, discussion colloquia, and other networking events. Accepted Fellows research a broad range of topics from migration and 18th-century property rights to bioethics and environmental policy. Jennings Randolph Peace Scholarship Dissertation Program Thank you for your interest in the Peace Scholarship Dissertation Program! The United States Institute of Peace is dedicated to supporting advanced research from top academics in a variety of fields that contribute to a wider understanding of how to manage conflict and build sustainable peace effectively. Dissertation scholarships last for 10 months, starting in September each year.

Marshall Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Today the Marshall Foundation, continuing Louise’s legacy, seeks to enhance the lives of the citizens of Tucson and Pima County through its support of charitable and educational institutions. To that end, The University of Arizona Graduate College with assistance of the Louise Foucar Marshall Foundation offers the Marshall Foundation Dissertation Fellowship to help Arizona graduate students complete their doctoral dissertation. A Fellowship is provided annually for up to six students by the Marshall Foundation and a Graduate Tuition Scholarship that covers in-state base graduate tuition is provided by the Graduate College.

Society for American Music Robert Walser and Susan McClary Fellowship Intended to diversify the field of scholars working on American music, the Robert Walser and Susan McClary Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding Ph.D. candidate at a U.S. or Canadian university who is a member of a historically underrepresented group in the field. Applications are especially welcome from African Americans, Native Americans, Native Pacific Islanders, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans, and, from Canada, aboriginal peoples and visible minorities (as defined by Canadian legislation). The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems.
