ORGAN DONATION AND SUPPORT

In loving memory of a family member who has passed, a Wicks Opus 5443 organ is being gifted to the church by two members of our congregation! This organ will have two rows of pipes (two rank) and two keyboards (two manual) along with new digital technology that will expand the richness of the sound and will also increase the flexibility in the types of sound used in worship and concerts. The organ has already been transferred from a church in Ramsey, Illinois, to the Wicks shop in Highland. The extensive upgrades will take up to one year to complete, with installation occurring sometime in mid to late 2020. Our current organ, a Wicks Opus 5069, will be sold or donated prior to the arrival of the new organ. Although the donors are willing to finance 100% of the costs associated with this purchase, the members of your Church Council are encouraging anyone who feels moved to help with this initiative to please consider doing so. This is a very substantial gift to the church. Any help, either in the form of a one-time contribution or as an ongoing gift, would be deeply appreciated. A down payment has already been paid, with three additional payments expected to be made in the upcoming months. If interested in helping, write your check(s) payable to OLLC, indicating “organ” in the memo line of your check. This organ donation support is in no way connected to other improvements planned for the future at Our Lord’s. Similarly, it is not meant to be in competition with any upcoming upgrades to our facilities. We are excited about this opportunity to enhance the overall worship experience at Our Lord’s Lutheran Church!

WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

WEEKEND WORSHIP DURING OCTOBER

Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6

Fourth Sunday in Creation: Animal

The scriptures for this Sunday are linked by their attention to fauna (the animal world both wild and tamed). The rhythms of nature, divine and human wisdom, and the overarching care and concern of God for all creatures will get our attention on this final weekend in our Season

of Creation Series. On Saturday night, there will be a Blessing of the Animals.

Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Luke 17:11-19

Washed in the Waters Healing miracles in the scriptures help us to connect the waters of healing with the waters of holy baptism. Healing allows people to

return to their rightful place as members of a community. Give thanks!

Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20

Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Luke 18:1-8 Persistence

On this first weekend in our financial stewardship series, we hear of Jacob’s prosperity and a widow’s poverty. For them, and for us,

persistence can reshape our lives. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed.

Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 Reformation Sunday: John 8:31-36

Facing the Truth On this day we commemorate the work of Martin Luther in starting

the reforms needed in the church. Over 500 years latter we continue to be reformed by the Holy Spirit. Facing the truth about ourselves in

all areas, including our use of money, opens us to receive the healing grace of God.

THE ABC ‘S OF THRIVENT Thrivent Financial serves Christian communities so that we grow in the ability to “Be Wise with Money” and “Live Generously”. All 78 members of Our Lord’s who have funds in Thrivent are eligible to use the ABC’s of Thrivent to benefit the congregation and ministries beyond our walls.

“A” stands for Action Teams. Thrivent members are eligible to apply for a $250.00 grant and other Action Team materials twice a year. Pastor Darla Ann is a Thrivent member and has applied for this to help fund the OLLC booth at the Maryville Fall Festival.

“B” stands for Builds, as in Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity. In the next year or two there will be opportunities to help at home building sites.

“C” stands for Choice. Eligible members have the opportunity to recommend where Thrivent distributes some of their charitable grant funds. Congregations, camps, and social ministries are among the organizations who receive funds through Thrivent Choice. Eight to ten people have designated Our Lord’s to receive a portion of the Choice dollars they can designate. In the current year, Our Lord’s has received $3,052.00. For more information on how to use the ABC ’s of Thrivent, contact Pastor Dar.

“MAKING CONNECTIONS” New Member Class & Recognition

Our Lord’s will officially welcome those who choose to become members of this congregation during the weekend worship services on October 19 and 20. Those interested in joining OLLC this fall are asked to attend a two-session course at 9:30 am on Sunday, October 6 and Sunday, October 13. The course will explore connections between participants and three areas of life in this congregation; 1) the practices of the faith, 2) the purpose of Our Lord’s, and 3) people and ministries at Our Lord’s. For more information, please call Pastor Dar at 330-244-7963 or at the church office at 618-345-5692.

SUNDAY ADULT BIBLE STUDY The Adult Bible Study meets on Sundays at 9:15 am in the Worship Center Conference Room. The group finishes the DVD Course from The Great Courses Series: “Jesus and the Gospels” by Professor Luke Timothy Johnson of Emory University. The study concludes with two last lessons about “Jesus in and through the Gospels” (Oct. 6) and “Learning Jesus in Past and Present” (Oct. 13). The Sunday Adult Bible Study will then begin a new DVD Course from The Great Courses Series: “Thinking about Religion and Violence” by Professor Jason C. Bivins of North Carolina State University on Oct. 20th. This course explores some of the factors involved in the increase in religious violence by looking at its history, multiple manifestations, scriptural justifications and how its perpetrators perceive the world. It looks at the power of religion and violence, how religious tenets are cited to justify violence, and to police identities, like race, gender and sexuality. It will examine case studies of persecution of other religious traditions. It will also address religious terrorism and how we can respond to it in our time. All men and women are welcome to these studies led by Dona Racich.

QUESTIONS BIBLE STUDY

The Questions Bible Study meets Mondays at 10 am in the Life Center Conference Room. The DVD Course from The Great Courses Series: Science and Religion by Professor Lawrence M. Celebrate Faith in Action Sunday by Volunteering for CFIA

Faith in Action’s Answers on Aging Can Help Seniors

with Medicare Open Enrollment

“Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.” (Proverbs 19:20)

Medicare’s open enrollment period runs this year from October 15 to December 7. This is the time when anyone with Medicare can change their health coverage for the following year to better fit their needs. If you’re uncertain how to make Medicare or insurance changes, or how to enroll in the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, Faith in Action’s Answers on Aging (AoA) program will help you to work your way through all the information. AoA services are offered without charge to seniors and their caregivers. This program is not affiliated with any insurance company or product. Faith in Action’s Answers on Aging Specialist, Social Worker Laura Goss, is a caring, trained professional who can help you with up-to-date information on benefits and resources to meet your aging needs. Laura is available for advice on Medicare, Medicaid eligibility, and information on housing, assisted living, nursing homes, respite care, and hospice care. Call Laura at 344-7788, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to schedule a private appointment for insurance counseling. Don’t wait until December to seek advice. Time to assist in changing or enrolling in Medicare programs will be limited if you wait until the last minute. Why struggle with complicated forms and information by yourself? Call Laura Goss at 344-7788 to make an appointment and get the help you need.

New hours after Labor Day: Tuesday – Saturday: 10:00 – 12:00 Tuesday Evening: 5:30 – 7:30

MIND THE GAP Update

Mind the Gap update: The most common phrases heard from the brothers and sisters we, as faithful Christians, serve on Thursday nights are “Thank You!” and “God bless you!”. This is very humbling for us. As you probably know, the homeless persons we serve have many problems, but who among us do not. When we are able to talk with individuals one on one and establish a little rapport, people will risk opening themselves to us sharing both good and bad news. In this article, I will focus on some good news items from our ministry. A couple who have not had a roof over their heads for 11 years were certified, because of mental health issues, for lifetime housing assistance and support. A drug addicted veteran, through some assistance from one of our group members is in daily outpatient drug treatment and receiving supportive services to collect documents so he can apply for V.A. services. Two weeks ago while we were stopped at Christ Church Cathedral, one of our regular feeding sites, we encountered a gentleman who was epileptic and was in need of medication. He had the script in his hand which he felt necessary to prove he was not a scammer. The price of the drug he needed was $21 and we were trying to come up with the right amount because he absolutely would not take anymore than the price of the script. During this interaction, he revealed to us last week he suffered a seizure on the street. When the seizure ended a complete stranger was at his side and upon learning his condition took him under wing for the whole day by letting him ride in his pickup truck in the normal course of his travels so he would not be alone. The man then said, “How blessed am I”. Lastly a young pregnant woman needed some diabetic testing supplies, because she has gestational diabetes. I am a diabetic and because of recent technology to treat diabetes I no longer need a glucose meter to check my blood sugars, so I was able to give her a meter and test supplies. Thanks for all of your support for Mind the Gap. The blankets are a big hit and the monetary support from the congregation helps sustain and expand our ministry.

Dave Gocken

PRAYER LIST As you may have noticed, Our Lord’s Prayer List is always a long one. We have many within our congregation, or who are connections to a member, that are in need of prayer that are included on the list. The church office “purges” the list approximately once a month. If we know that there is a long-term illness or condition, we tend to not delete the person. However, we don’t always know why a person is included in our prayer life. But you can help. If the person for which you have requested prayer has improved enough to come off the prayer list or has passed away, please let the church office know. We want to keep the Prayer List as current and viable as possible. Thank you for your help. LORETTA
