MY529 PROVIDES A NEW MEASURE FOR ACCOUNT PERFORMANCE Now available to my529 account owners—your account’s personal rate of return.

The personal rate of return (also known as a dollar-weighted rate of return) represents an account’s individual performance as calculated by my529. It measures the performance of the account (including dividends, interest and fees), and it considers the impact of the size of contributions and withdrawals over the date range being evaluated. Market fluctuations are also included.

Withdrawals are not treated as a decline in a return, but they will decrease the account’s principal for the return calculation. Account performance is calculated every business day for each account.

The personal rate of return differs from the monthly performance returns published on my529.org in that the monthly performance returns are normalized and do not reflect individual account transactions but are a measure of market activity of the underlying funds that make up my529’s 13 investment options.

Your personal rate of return

Account owners can view their personal rate of return through Account Access. The rate of return is automatically calculated for year-to-date, but account owners can adjust the date range as far back as January 1, 2005, or account opening, whichever is the later date.

The personal rate of return should not be used to make investment decisions. The personal rate of return is provided by my529 as a courtesy for informational

purposes only with respect to the unique transaction activity that occurred within an account. You should consider other factors like your time horizon, risk tolerance, investment objectives, personal financial situation and tax implications before making changes to your investment options. Past performance is not a guarantee of future performance.

An FAQ about the Personal Rate of Return is available in Account Access.

You can find the personal rate of return for your my529 accounts in Account Access.

my529 joins national campaign to promote saving for higher education Do your children or grandchildren love “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood”? my529 has partnered with Fred Rogers Productions, creators of the animated PBS series, for a national campaign to help parents prepare their children for higher education.

As part of the campaign, the College Savings Plans Network (CSPN) has published The Roadmap For Their Future, a guide for children from infants to high school seniors to help families financially prepare for college. my529 is a member organization of CSPN.

The free guide is available for download at 529forcollege.com. It includes interactive activities for children, ideas to encourage thinking about future careers, suggestions to mark and honor areas of success and strategies to teach children of all ages about money.

The Roadmap is CSPN’s latest initiative after launching the campaign in March 2019 with ads on “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.”

The goal of my529 and CSPN is to encourage families to invest for higher education and reduce reliance on student loans, including the interest that comes with those loans.

529forcollege.com also features a “How Much Could You Save” college savings calculator, basic information and quizzes on 529 plans, Daniel Tiger coloring sheets and “A Tigertastic Activity” to help children learn generosity.

IN A TIME OF GIVING, MAKE EDUCATION A PRIORITYGiving Tuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a day when people are encouraged to donate to various causes and organizations.

Take a moment while starting the holiday gift-giving season to support your favorite charity. In addition, it’s a great time to remind your family and friends that the gift of education is a lasting gift.

Enroll in the my529 Gift Program, where loved ones can give the gift of education directly to your beneficiary’s account. It’s easy to sign up, and simple for friends and family to contribute.

While the holiday season is a great opportunity for family and friends to contribute to your beneficiary’s my529 account, they can donate for other occasions as well, such as birthdays, holidays, graduations, milestones or just because.

Visit gift.my529.org to find more information and learn about other options like gift notices.

YOU CAN USE MY529 FUNDS AT ELIGIBLE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ABROADAsk anyone who has gone away to college—attending school far from home creates opportunities beyond the classroom. Explore a new city and form lasting friendships, all while earning a degree.

But how about a different part of the globe? A semester abroad can be meaningful, or you could consider enrolling full time in a college or university in another country. Connect with a different culture, and you may find that this path opens doors you never expected.

my529 funds can also be used for qualified higher education expenses at eligible educational institutions outside the United States. To locate potential schools, search the quarterly U.S. Department of Education list of eligible educational institutions that are qualified to participate in federal student aid programs.*

Here are seven college destinations that may not be on your radar.

IRELAND—Discover your Irish roots—or set down new ones—at universities in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Limerick or Belfast.

AUSTRALIA—Say “G’day” to an Australian university in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or Brisbane, as well as many other institutions throughout the country. If you’ve ever wanted to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, traverse the Outback or visit the famed Sydney Opera House, you’re on the right continent.**

ISRAEL—If Israel is more your style, try The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, or the University of Haifa. Learn more about the political history of the region, the challenges it faces today, and how the ancient and modern intersect to

create a vibrant, thriving culture. Study technology in Tel Aviv, diplomacy in Haifa or ancient Near East studies in Jerusalem.

CANADA—If you prefer to stay in North America, look to a wealth of Canadian university offerings spanning the country in provinces from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. Practice your French in Montreal, take in Toronto’s metropolitan skyline or enjoy proximity to world-class skiing near Vancouver.**

WESTERN EUROPE and UK— Figure out why Scandinavians are so happy in Sweden and Denmark and learn to embrace hygge like the Danes. Put high school language classes to work in Germany, France, Italy or Spain. If you’re worried that your language skills won’t impress the locals—or you’re not sure about trial by immersion—think about England, Scotland or Wales.

SAND and SURF—Feeling beachy? Study medicine or veterinary medicine in the Caribbean at St. George’s University in Grenada. Other universities with nearby beaches include Costa Rica; Cape Town, South Africa; Greece; or the Dominican Republic.

BUSINESS—Get a global perspective by studying business in London, Copenhagen, Barcelona or Amsterdam. Focus on management in Berlin, finance in Frankfurt or international relations in Paris.

Higher education is about broadening horizons. Time abroad, whether a semester or a degree, can certainly contribute to a new perspective. And your my529 account can help cover some of your expenses once you get there. *The applicant is responsible for determining a school’s eligibility, as it is subject to change.

** Snorkeling, skiing and other activities mentioned are not qualified higher education expenses so withdrawals for these expenses won’t be covered by 529 funds; however, you may still participate in these activities while attending school abroad. Qualified higher education expenses include tuition, mandatory fees, room and board and other supplies. Transportation expenses are not qualified higher education expenses even when travelling abroad. For a complete list, see the Program Description.

FAFSA: Short for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a FAFSA is the form used to apply for federal financial aid for higher education. Each applicant must meet certain criteria in order to qualify for financial aid, which includes grants, work-study and loans. The government uses the FAFSA to determine the amount of aid for which each applicant qualifies.

**This fall, many high schools nationwide are holding FAFSA completion events. Check with your school to see if it will be participating.**

When tuition comes due, many colleges and universities offer a way to manage expenses with a tuition payment plan.

A tuition payment plan allows students and families to pay tuition in installments rather than in a lump sum at the beginning of the semester.

Most plans require installment payments over a period shorter than a calendar year, such as three or four payments over the course of a semester, according to FinAid, an online financial aid information website.

Schools have partnered with online resources including Tuition Management Services and FACTS Education Solutions to facilitate the payment of tuition electronically. While payment plans don’t charge interest, FinAid says, many will levy fees or finance charges, usually around $100.

Whether you’re still deciding on a school, or you’re enrolled and looking at your financial situation, check with individual colleges and universities about payment plans.

my529 can distribute funds only to the account owner, beneficiary or the eligible educational institution. my529 cannot send a withdrawal to companies that manage tuition payment plans. However, once the beneficiary or the account owner receives the funds from my529, they can use them in a payment plan.

Utah taxpayers, depending on their tax-filing status, can claim a 5 percent tax credit/deduction per qualified beneficiary

Married couples are not required to have separate my529 accounts to claim the joint tax benefits. However, if both spouses own separate accounts for the same beneficiary, each will receive a Utah state tax form TC-675H for his or her account. Their aggregated maximum Utah state income tax credit is then limited to one joint tax credit per qualified beneficiary.

For UGMA/UTMA accounts, only the account owner, who is also the beneficiary, is eligible for state tax benefits, even if the account owner is a minor.

A nonresident or part-year Utah resident can claim only a prorated amount of the Utah state income tax credit.

The Utah state income tax credit/deduction may be taken per beneficiary. If an account owner with three different

If she contributes $2,000 to each beneficiary, she would qualify for a $100 tax credit for each account (5% of each $2,000 contribution), yielding a total tax credit of $300.

You can contribute beyond the maximum allowable amount, but you receive a tax benefit only up to the limit. If a couple, married filing jointly, contributes $5,000 to an account during the tax year, they would only be eligible for a tax benefit based on the maximum allowable contribution, which is $4,000. They would receive a $200 tax credit. For more information, read the Program Description.
