SePTeMBeR WaS another fan-tastic month at the Clearwater Yacht Club! We had many great events and it was great to see so many of you participating in so many ways.

We started out the month with the Grand Reopening Party to cel-ebrate the success of the House and Grounds Committee’s hard work to refresh the entire upper level of the Club. I hope that all of you are as proud of our facility as I am. A special thanks to Vice Commodore Phil Beauchamp and to member Deb Aune for their exceptional contributions to the project.

Labor Day weekend is always a special time at the Club, with the barbeque and games in the dry dock, Tiki bar and pool. We are always happy to see all our members enjoying all that the Club has to offer.

Past Commodore Hoyt Nichols is spearheading a project to study the capital assets of the Club at the recommendation of the Long Term Planning Com-mittee. We are planning to have a complete report to present to the board no later than January 2019.

Thanks to all for your participation and commit-ment to your Club!

See You at the Club!

HaPPy FaLL aND KICK oFF oF SaILING SeaSoN! SoMe oF ouR boats have already competed in a race or two in September. In fact, a couple of CYC member boats competed in the Dunedin Cup regatta the last Satur-day in September. While the Super Boats were practicing on Saturday, the sailors were competing south of the pass.

Racing continues on Oct 6th, with the first ever Clear-water to Pass-a-Grill run. Designed to encourage more boats to come up our way to compete in the Dunedin Cup, this race provides the sailors that wish to compete for Boat of the Year an additional race in the fall, as we decided to move Clearwater Challenge to the spring. (Remember the great party that member Jim Hannigan’s company, Captain Morgan, helped throw for us this past May?)

At the end of the month, both Club members and Yacht-ing resources will be helping the Sailing Center host two very important regattas: the Kona World Championships and the RS North Americans. Konas are windsurfing boards. And RSs are multihull sailboats. The Konas will be launching off the beach at Sand Key Park and the RSs will launch from the beach north of the Sailing Center. Anyone interested can get a good look at the competitors and their boats, at the beginning and end of their days.

In February 2019, CYC will once again host the Laser Mid Winters East regatta. Past Commodore Dick Bo-blenz is once again organizing this world class regatta. It takes an army to put on a regatta for 160-200 sailors,

plus their coaches and families. We will be looking for volunteers for everything for all 4 days:

l helping register sailors, l safety boat patrol, l offering up your guest room for a judge to stay l generating publicity for the regatta and the club If you have a special skill that can help our club or are not

sure where to help but want to, please do not hesitate to ask. You can talk with any member of the Yachting com-mittee (we all have our favorite way to pitch in to help on this regatta), or specifically PC Dick Boblenz, PC David Billing, PC Ed Proefke, Rear Admiral Pete Chabot, Dave Yoder, or me. We will be glad to discuss the various ways you can pitch in to help make this regatta a resounding suc-cess for the participants and the Clearwater Yacht Club!

Beer can racing will kick off in the middle of the month as well. On Sat, Oct 13th we will have a beer can race - with a start time around noon.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get out on the wa-ter for the Sunset Sails. Reinhard Opitz is coordinating, and has an opportunity scheduled for Sat, Oct 20th. For more information contact Reinhard directly at [email protected].

The weather is about to “break” where we can enjoy our beautiful Florida climate again!

I’ll look for you on the water!

Special mention to the Riva delivery crew of CYC member Curtis Wold and CYC Race Committee volun-teer Larry Steele who, while returning from competing in the St Pete Classic Boat Regatta, had mechanical issues and used the alternate form of power available to certain boats - the wind. They sailed the entire way back from St Pete. Ok, that’s what the boat is designed for, right? But, better than that, they sailed up thru the pass, around Clearwater Point, and into their slip in the CYC marina!!

SePTeMBeR finished off our third quarter of this fine year with lots of 90+ degree weather, a few tropical threats and SOOOOO many compliments of the newly remodeled Club.

We have completed the major part of the remodel with rave reviews from our numerous visitors, transient boaters and most impor-tantly our CYC Members. There are still a few more projects in the works: the kitchen, phone system and Wi-Fi. Each of these projects has many moving parts and we are in the research and discovery phase for these important needs for our Club. We continue to gather competitive bids and information to make the best investment for the Club’s future.

We upgraded the IT system with a new server and

By Phil Beauchamp, vice Commodore

security tower to protect our information and in compli-ance with government guidelines. This installation was completed the last week of September. The Wi-Fi is back up and running. This is the next major upgrade we are working on to provide better service to our members in the club and to our boaters out on the docks.

As we move into the 4th quarter of the year, we look forward to showing off our beautiful Club to our CYC Members returning from their summer adventures, our FCYC Members and all our winter visitors from other re-ciprocal yacht clubs. We have some important meetings and events coming up this quarter.

Carol and I hope to see you at the Annual Meeting and the Change of Watch just to name a few. Also, get your costumes ready! The Haunted House is ready to be built, staff is preparing and it’s our job (however ghoulish) to welcome fall and the ALWAYS fun events at CYC.

Thanks for supporting our Club.See you at the Club!

eveR WoNDeR HoW boats get their names? Creativity abounds.

Below are a few boat names you might recognize by owners and members of the CYC.

Dancing with DolphinsJim and Jeni Donnell

“The first time we went out on her we had dolphins fol-lowing along side of us. We enjoyed the movie “Dancing with Wolves” and the name just sounded right.

SurebetEd and Nancy Proefke

“The name, “Surebet” has been on 6 Proefke family boats since 1970. It must be lucky. It is a result of combin-ing family names: SU for daughter Susan, R for son Rick, E for son Ed Jr., B for mom Betty, E for dad Ed, Sr, and T for family dog, Teddy. “

Next DanceDave and Sherrill Yoder

“After owning a sailboat in Michigan for 30+ years, we moved to Clearwater and bought a power boat, thus the name, “Next Dance” .”

El SuenoDon and Joan Carter“El Sueno” means “The Dream.” Owning a boat has always been a dream we had for travel-ing when we retired. We have been all over Florida, to the Bahamas and down the Tennessee River from Knoxville to Mobile. It truly has been a dream come true.”

ImagineMike and Kiffy Hester

“We always imagined owning a boat when we lived in Colorado. When we moved to Clearwater we bought one. Imagine that! We chose our boat name after the song written by John Lennon. John Lennon had a unique way of writing the letter E with just three horizontal lines. We used that same typestyle. “

A Porpoiseful LifeTom and Terry Brusini“Terry loves dolphins. It’s also a play on words from Steve Covey’s “Purposeful Life. “

BOAT NAMES . . . It’s all in the name By Bob Griffin Satisfaction

Barrie Gustard, Past CYC Commodore“I think the Rolling Stones are the greatest band ever!

Knowing this, my wife came up with the name. We also have a dinghy named, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want. “

Prima Donna IIICliff and Donna Wyatt

“Named after wife, Donna. This is our third Prima Donna. Our first boat, a 24’ Bayliner, was Prima Donna 1. Prima Donna means Special. There may be a Prima Donna IV. “

Woodn’t U Too?Gary and Sondra Newcom

“We used to own a wood flooring business. After retir-ing, we thought it was only appropriate to name our new boat using the word, “wood”. “

Ty One OnTy and Judy Witherington

“Obviously, my name. Judy and my son get credit for naming my last two boats this name. I was a little worried how the Marine Patrols would view it. Ironically, I saw a 50’ fishing boat in the Abacos with the same name. “

Gross ProfitRod and Barbara White

“This is our 4th boat sporting this name. Our daughter came up with it. She said we talk about gross profit all the time. My office finally realized after we named this boat, Gross Profit #4, I was serious about making a profit. Profits paid for this boat. “

Daze OffJohnny and Phyllis Cardosi, Past CYC Commodore

“Before we bought a boat, we were looking forward to boating on our “Daze Off.” Our prior boats were “In Hoc” because we were literally in hoc by buying it. My Grady-White was named “YOLO” (You Only Live Once).”

Second SeaSunBob and Becky Griffin

“Becky wanted a sports related message. Our first boat was “SeaSun Ticket” with a graphic of a ticket and the mes-sage ‘Admit Two.’ Thus, the name. Our next boat may be called “Final SeaSun.”

Family Sailing Fun at the Clearwater yacht ClubFaLL SaILING PRoGRaMS

The junior sailing program continues this fall at the Clearwater Yacht Club. After-school sailing will begin on Tuesday October 9th. Young sailors will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays after school through November 15th. With the program ending around 5:00 p.m., it’s a great op-portunity to bring our sailing families together for dinner after the program in the Grille, where happy hour runs 5-7 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday evening!

The Saturday morning youth sailing program will take place from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. starting Saturday October 13th. This group meets for a 6-week season.

Adult sailing returns this fall beginning Saturday after-noons from 1-4 p.m. The first meeting will be October 13th. The Saturday afternoon class will teach sailing and racing skills for anyone who might also be interested in

joining the Bow chasers. Bow chasers sail at the CYC on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and often have lunch in the Grille afterwards. For more information on how to join the Bow chasers, please contact the CYC of-fice. Remember, Gage has the Tiki Bar open Saturday af-ternoons with the big screen TV showing college football, so there’s something at the CYC for everyone.

You can be a part of any of these small boat sailing opportunities by contacting our program director Ned Covel at [email protected]. Sail for the Hungry

The 4th Annual Ted Irwin Memorial Sail-A-Thon will be held Saturday December 1, 2018 at CYC from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. As in past years, the Sail-A-Thon will benefit the Beach Community Food Pantry. Food donations, sponsorship, and monetary donations will be requested, with 100% of the proceeds going to feed the hungry. This event is a Youth Sailing version of a “Walkathon” and is intended to be a fun event that enables kids who love to sail to take what they love and “pay it forward” for our neighbors in need. Event information will be posted on Facebook at www.facebook.com/indianrocksfamilysailing. Your participation is needed to make this event a success. If you can help, please contact Michael Schulz at [email protected].

As always, we wish you fair winds, following seas, and safe boating!

So MaNy FRIeNDS, SO MUCH FUN, SO LITTLE TIME! Whether it’s bingo, trivia, karaoke, jazz or dancing with your sweetheart we’ve got it, and if we don’t, we’ll make it happen! It’s all part of being a member of our CYC family.

September has come and gone, but we managed to squeeze in a great Labor Day weekend (even though the weather didn’t cooperate!), fill the upstairs for our Grand Re-opening Party while welcoming JR back, and thanks to the ladies of the Entertainment committee, we introduced a new theme in our first “Throwback Bash”, a flashback in time to your favorite decade. Guests were dressed in their own version of that decade’s finest, dancing to the music of the period! Check out the website and see if you can recognize the happy party goers! On a special note, I want to thank the behind-the-scenes efforts of Christy Crist, Amie Crosby, Misha Kelly and Abbey Heimensen. These ladies not only created the concept, they were at the Club bright and early the day of the party making sure all the decorations and final touches were taken care of. Thank you, ladies!

Get your calendars out and mark the dates because October will be another great month at CYC. Fall is in the air and many of our members will be returning from the about to get cold North!

We begin the month with the an-nual Blessing of the Pets on Sunday, the 7th. Father Bob will be here to bless all creatures, no matter how exotic. On the same day the Cruis-ers are planning to display their fish-ing prowess from the day before with

a CYC Fish Fry on the dry dock. Saturday October 13th our GM’s beautiful wife Terry will be hosting a Country & Western night, so get those boots polished, dust off that cowboy hat

and come join us. Two weeks later, on Saturday the 27th, Dan creates his haunted house and the ghosts and ghouls come out to celebrate Hal-loween at the Club. Start thinking about your costumes now!! After

the adult’s party on Saturday night, it’s the younger members (i.e., kids) turn to trick-or-treat for candy and fun Sunday morning. Can we have fun or what!

Your entertainment committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Please come and be part of

making this the great club it is! It’s your Club – Don’t be a stranger!See you around the Club!

CyC annual Blessing of animals: Sunday october 7th 1:00 p.m.

Whether you are a pet parent or not, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Please join us as we give thanks for the wonderful gift of our dogs, cats, birds, and all God’s creatures great and small. Bring your furry friends with you for a special blessing and the good company of your CYC family. By way of a recent cinematic “good feel” reminder of all the great things our dogs do for us, below is a film suggestion (and online review) you may enjoy: (available on Amazon, Netflix, You Tube….)

Megan Leavey: The true-life story of Megan Leavey, a young Marine corporal whose unique dis-cipline and bond with a military combat dog saved many lives during her deployment in Iraq. Assigned to clean up the K-9 unit after a disciplinary hearing,

Chaplain’s Log

Leavey starts to identify with Rex, a particularly aggres-sive dog that she trains. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex complete more than 100 missions until an improvised explosive device injures both, putting their fates in jeopardy.

Next month, I’ll have a full report covering all the fun and excitement we enjoyed on October 7th. Till then, stay safe, and God bless all our members, families, and staff, and all the amazing animals who bring joy and love to our lives.

Fishing Trip, Fish Fry & Potato Races october 6-7

This fun weekend returns in October. Enjoy a Saturday morning fishing charter trip aboard the Double Eagle with CYC members for $40 per person. Bring your own food and drinks or buy them on the boat. We will have the entire boat, but there is a limited availability, so call Virginia to reserve early. After fishing, we will be host-ing a cornhole tournament with live entertainment on the patio. The cost to play is $10 per person or $20 per team. Prizes will be 50% of the entrance fees. We will also be testing out the potato race track.

On Sunday, after the Blessing of the Pets, we will be hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry, with raffle prizes and a 50/50. The highlight of Sunday afternoon will be the

Second Annual Potato Derby Races, hosted by Gary and Sondra Newcom. For $10, each participant will create a “derby car” from a potato and a few other provided items. The “cars” will race each other, until a single winner emerg-es. There will be prizes for the fastest and most creative potato. Potatoes go on sale Saturday and are limited.

We are still collecting raffle items. If you or your business would like to donate items, please contact our raffle chairman, Linda Dorn, [email protected]. All proceeds from both days will be used to enhance CYC amenities. Last year’s proceeds purchased audio visual equipment used during events and presentations.

The final Cruisers’ event this year will be the Annual Cruise-In November 9-11 at the CYC.

If you’d like to join any of our cruises, make your reservation with me well in advance or you may not get a slip. You can reach me at 813-300-4176 or at [email protected]. Non-boaters are always welcome to drive and join in the fun!

Join the Cruisers on the second Wednesday of the month in the dry dock. Many of us stay afterwards for a group dinner.

General Manager’s LetterBy Tom Brusini, General Manager

being part of this special occasion! Even if you don’t have a pet now, it’s still great fun! After all have been blessed, we have some fun with silly pet tricks!

After that, the Cruisers are hosting a Dockside Fish Fry for all CYC members! Fresh fish, hush puppies, coleslaw for only $15…and they’re also featuring the most fun you can have with vegetables – the Potato Car Race! They’ll supply the potatoes (and one carrot!), axles, wheels…ev-erything you need – just wait until you see the track Gary Newcom made!

Being October, our biggest party must be Halloween! Maintenance supervisor Dan Geis pulls out all the stops with his haunted house upstairs. If you’re a new member reading this, trust me when I tell you this party is not to be missed! This year the party will be on Saturday, October 27th – start planning now! JR returns to play all night…BOO!

On Sunday the 28th we have our usual Sunday break-fast, but we also make it the Children’s Halloween Parade of costumes! Those old enough love going through the haunted house, but some of the younger ones won’t go near it…it’s that scary!

Keep those comments coming! It’s important that we

know how your experience is here – from the taste of the meals to the quality of your service. We want to make your club the first place you choose to dine, and the place you want to bring friends and guests to impress them!

At your service I remain,Tom Brusini

Employee Spotlight

Joyce has been with CYC for nearly four years and when she is not working at CYC, she is working toward her Nursing Master’s Degree at USF – and is the first in her family to attend college! She has two four-legged children, Rocky & Princess, and takes care of her 9-year old sister. Joyce works most lunches during the week as well as our Sun-day breakfast…and invites you to come and see her! Joyce loves reading, jogging and chocolate, and even dog sits for our GM when he’s on vacation!

oCToBeR IS HeRe! Please be sure to check your calendars so you don’t miss out and continue to read the Constant Contact email as well!

Thanks to those of you that came to our Grand

Reopening Party on September 8th! What fun having JR back after many months gone to enjoy our new digs! Fresh new paint scheme, brand-new dance floor and foyer floor, historical pictures, new light fixtures and more!

Join the Cruisers on Saturday, October 6th, as they rent a

big fishing catamaran, the Double Eagle, and go fishing for a few hours in the Gulf of Mexico! Upon returning to the Club they will have some boardwalk games on the Tiki deck!

The annual Blessing of the Pets & Pet Parade will hap-

pen on Sunday, October 7th, at 1:00 p.m. This is an awe-some gathering of mostly dogs, although we’ve had cats, birds, an African tortoise and a pig here before! It’s so cool watching our Fleet Chaplain, Father Bob Wagenseil, as he blesses each and every pet & owner. Please plan on

Membership continues to grow at CYC. The Board of Directors approved 3 full and 3 sum-mer members for the month of September. The summer membership program seems to be work-ing well as summer members are signing up as full or social members going forward. With that said October will be a banner month for new members signing up.

As Membership Chair I am asking for volunteers to sign up for membership committee to help us develop new strategies for future growth at CYC. I am also asking all members to encourage and sponsor family and friends to become new mem-bers. Please don’t forget to welcome and introduce yourself to the new members dining at the club. Look for the Pineapple Flag on their table that will indicate that they are “New” members. Thanks in advance and see you at the club!
