UWC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Linda Asper, President 2017-19 Thank you to our members who attended our special September meeting to
give input about our future as a Club. A special thanks to Roz Howard who
facilitated the session and will be giving us a report to pursue the review.
Pat Scott who has served as our Treasurer has decided to move on to other
challenges. We thank her for her contribution and hard work in chairing
the Finance Committee and serving as a Board member.
We are losing a foot of riverbank each year. Our neighbours have been meet-
ing about a riverbank stabilization project with UWC and FRCH representa-
tion. The goal is to seek government funding with 10% property owner funding to protect the riv-
erbank from the Library to Westgate Mennonite Collegiate.
Support our Club! Join us for a meal! Play Mah Jong, Scrabble, bridge! Enjoy a course or program
speaker and interact with one another! There is a wealth of activities this Fall!

CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (CFUW) Leona MacDonald, Liaison
CFUW Prairie Gathering is in Edmonton, Sept. 29th and 30th with six club members attending. The CFUW 100th Anniversary and AGM is in Winnipeg in 2019. President Linda Asper is attending to
this. The 2018 AGM will be held electronically, with in-person AGMs now held bi-annually. GWI Membership – We are still members of GWI. New fees have been suggested at $30.10 per mem-
ber, starting for us in June 2018, when we renew memberships. When GWI received pushback against the increase, it was deferred and an AD Hoc committee struck to review the issue. Recom-mendations have been accepted by the GWI Board, and a vote on membership fees will be held again. Canada has 10 votes. Because a motion has twice been brought to CFUW AGMs for with-drawal from GWI, President Grace Hollett wishes to consult all clubs about how Canada’s votes should be cast. A CFUW Board’s Special meeting was held Sept. 18th so that the four motions could be discussed and forwarded asap for club consideration. Club voting should be completed by Oct. 16. The CFUW Board vote takes place Oct. 22/23.
A new Advocacy Coordinator has been appointed: Genevieve de Breyne-Gagnon The Way Forward Report included many suggestions on board structure and governance. A committee
has been struck to examine these issues and propose recommendations. With a new mandate, the committee’s work begins early in October for completion Feb. 28th.
Vigils for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women will be held across Canada, Oct. 4th. Clubs are encouraged to view The Native Women’s Association website to plan or to attend a vigil close to home.
A Fundraising Initiative for Clubs, the selling of Gift Cards, will be talked about in an Oct. 26th Webinar. Several clubs have successfully fundraised for club projects. More details on CFUW website.
The Oakville Club introduced a new interest group via MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). They are studying Understanding Violence Against Women. Other courses relative to CFUW initiatives are Indigenous Canada from U of Alberta and Women in Leadership, Inspiring Positive Change. Visit the MOOC site to view all courses offered.
The 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women is March 12-23, 2018 at the UN in New York. If interested in being a delegate, information is online and the application deadline is Oct, 20th. Send to Robin Jackson cfuwed @ rogers.com.
The Library Award 2018 is given to an organization that promotes literacy and learning by supporting innovative approaches. Deadline for submission is Oct. 1 – March 1. Guidelines and nominations are on the CFUW website.
Please look for fuller information in the CFUW binder in the Ralph Connor Room. CFUW NEWS ONLINE: www.cfuwadmin.org; CFUW PHONE: 613.234.8252 or toll-free at 1.888.220.9606.
INTEREST GROUPS Pat Elliott, Coordinator Marathon Bridge needs a new convener. The former convener, Joan Berg, is willing to help a new convener
get up to speed on the requirements of the job and Janice Macdonald has all the necessary computer infor-
mation and programs. If you are willing to organize this activity, which is a fundraiser for the UWC, please
contact Pat Elliott,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STUDIO 54 (DRAMA GROUP) Vicky Armanios, Agnes Collins Coordinators
Our first meetings of the new season will be held on Thurs., Oct. 5 and 19, 1:00-3:00 pm. We will begin planning our trip to The Warehouse Thea-tre to see Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar during the February Mas-ter Playwright Festival. We will also begin our fall drama activities with a tribute to Can-ada's 150th anniversary. Billy Bishop Goes to War is one of the most celebrated and most performed Canadian plays. With its look back to the famous flying ace of 1914 through the eyes of 2017, it provides an opportunity to celebrate and to critique Canadian nationalism. The play's singular tone of sobriety mingled with laughter cre-ates an entertaining and thoughtful dra-matic experience. We look forward to plunging in and hope you will join us!
The Committee reviewed this draft Plan at the meeting and provided several further recom-mendations for changes to the CFUW national office. REMEMBERING CÉLINE MARIE KEAR B.A. Memorial (Nfld.), M.A. Laval September 9, 2017
Céline Marie Kear (née Power), formerly of Branch, St. Mary's Bay,
Newfoundland, passed away at Victoria General Hospital. A vital
force as a teacher at Vincent Massey Collegiate and U of W lec-
turer, Céline also served as our President 2009-2011, President of
the Manitoba Historical Society and Heritage Winnipeg. She is
remembered by many of us for her UWC courses on Jane Austen,
female novelists of early Canada, English and French novels of the
18th and 19th centuries, etc. These were all her passions. For
decades she served with the volunteer sector and charitable non-
profit heritage community serving on the Dalnavert Management Committee, the Board of The
Friends of the Ralph Connor House and Doors Open Winnipeg. It was very difficult to refuse when
Céline had tickets to sell or volunteer positions to be filled! There will be a celebration of Céline’s
life later this month.
COMMUNICATIONS Linda Thomas, Chair
The new website uwcwpgmb.com has many new and exciting features. Under About go to Home. On the bottom right corner of the home page you will find the three most recent Bulletins and the archived ones. Just click on the current one or previous and the issue will just pop up. Under Events & Courses you will find a new heading titled Special Events. This is where special upcoming events will be posted, for example the Home Tours happening in October. On several web pages you will find a photo or poster. To look at back copies, just click on the poster / photo that is showing and back copies will appear. Follow the same procedure with the Photo Gallery listed under Membership where you will find the photos are arranged under different categories. Much of the information under Rentals is brand new. It markets how the house can be used for meetings, private entertaining and weddings. Facility Rental should be useful for members but also to family, friends and business acquaintances and to people browsing the internet. The committee still needs committee members and we urge you to consider coming to a meeting to find out what the communications role is in the club. Or contact Linda Thomas to have a chat about what we do. Your help and input is important to us and the club. A reminder to Conveners and Chairs to please monitor your web page on the website to check for accuracy regarding your activity and that it is updated. Please contact Linda Thomas for any changes or corrections. Our next Communications Committee meeting is Tuesday, October 3 at 1:30.
