Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thank you all for your coming together as the Body of Christ during Hurricane Irma. We are stronger together. You will get a sample of the disciples who worked so hard on our United Meth- odist Church of the Palm Beaches Facebook page. Who are we as a Christian Church? We are United Methodist, grounded in Wesleyan theology. What is Wesleyan Theology? Believers in Jesus Christ who are saved by God’s grace alone. We are methodical about connecting God’s people to God, to each other, and to the world. In October, we will explore who the Wesley family was and how God shaped them to then shape others to be what we know as the United Methodist Church. Each week we will uncover the United Methodist six distinctive marks and four distinctive beliefs about God’s grace. I hope that you will experience Worship + 2 with us. Worship together on Sunday morning, involved in a ministry that feeds your soul and a ministry that reaches out to others. You are created and loved by God and this congregation. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you all for your coming together as the Body of Christ during Hurricane Irma. We are stronger together. You will get a sample of the disciples who worked so hard on our United Meth-odist Church of the Palm Beaches Facebook page.

I am looking forward to sharing God’s love with you as we seek to share God’s love with others.

Joyfully Pastor Patti

LAST OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE IN 2017! Yes, it’s that time again. On Sunday, November 5, new families will arrive as we host Family Promise for the last time in 2017. If you have not previously participated as a volunteer Host, you don’t know what you’re missing. What an opportunity to meet and interact with the families. You will be helping

local homeless children by empowering their families to regain self-sufficiency and get back into a home of their own. These are not hard-core homeless people. They are unfortunate people who, in hard times, lost their homes and need help to get back on the feet. Since September 2011, the children we have served have been as young as 2 weeks to a teenager of 17. Also, single parents with as many as 5 children and 2 parents with as many as 4 chil-dren. The families arriving on November 5 will be new families in Family Promise. The families who were with us in July, Sabrina & Sherwin and their 3 children and Tanika and her 5 children, will have graduated and will be in their new homes by the time you read this October Herald; what an exciting time for those families! For the November 5th Host Week, volunteer on-line signups began in late September and hard copy signups will begin on Sunday, October 8, in The Gathering Place. Please signup early so you can have a better chance to get the position / date you really want. AND, it takes a lot of pressure, anxiety and loss of sleep off the UMCPB Family Promise leadership! 2018 Host Weeks are o February 25 - March 4 o April 29 - May 6 o August 19 - August 26 o November 25 - December 2 Please mark your calendars NOW for the November 5, 2017 AND the 2018 Host weeks! If you have question / comments, please call / text Fred at 561-762-5374 or email [email protected] God Bless you for your support of Family Promise! UMCOR Responds to Current Disasters Around the World

In the wake of recent disasters in the United States and abroad, the United Methodist Committee On Relief

(UMCOR) is working to fulfill unmet food, clean water, temporary shelter, hygiene supplies, and non-food

item needs. UMCOR's work starts when search and rescue operations for survivors is over. We accompany

communities in their long-term recovery. UMCOR works with Conference Disaster Response Coordinators

(CDRC) to assess needs and to design and implement disaster response activities.

FLORIDA Following Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, Cathy Earl visited impacted conferences and United Methodist

Churches in Florida and Texas. Earl met with CDRCs, local churches, and disaster response volunteers while actively engaging

and working with cleanup crews. Florida has ordered 1,000 hygiene kits and 7,128 cleaning buckets from UMCOR Sager

Brown. UMCOR will support its partners and conferences impacted by the hurricanes through grants and technical guidance.

After assessments are complete, UMCOR anticipates granting additional funds to the impacted conferences. Florida is working

with affiliates to begin the next phases of relief and early recovery. UMCOR Sager Brown is sending 3,700 cleaning buckets to

Florida Annual Conference to support cleanup efforts. The cleaning kits will be distributed where they are most needed. More

relief supply kits from UMCOR Sager Brown will be sent to other churches in Florida impacted by hurricane Irma

GEORGIA Following Hurricane Irma, UMCOR’s U.S. disaster response program manager, Scott Tibbetts, and disaster

response consultant, Barbara Tripp, traveled to the South Georgia Annual Conference to meet with conference leadership

and support relief and recovery operations.

SOUTH CAROLINA To address damages caused by Hurricane Irma, the South Carolina Conference organized

assessment teams to develop recovery programming. UMCOR is awaiting completed assessments and is ready to offer sup-

port as needed.

U.S. TERRITORIES Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands suffered major damage from both Hurricane Irma and

Hurricane Maria. UMCOR’s partners in Puerto Rico have invited UMCOR support for relief supplies and other commodities.

UMCOR is prepared to offer additional support through funding, training, and project development once needs are identified.

NON-U.S. TERRITORIES UMCOR is communicating with its partners in the Caribbean and awaiting an assessment

from them to provide effective relief to those affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria.

MEXICO Devastating earthquakes in Mexico killed at least 320 and caused widespread damage to homes, hospitals, and

government infrastructure. UMCOR is in communication with the local Methodist Church and is ready to respond to part-

ners’ requests for relief and recovery assistance. Global Ministries two missionaries, Hector LaPorta and Amanda Cherry, are

serving in Mexico City, Mexico. Both reported they are safe and accounted for. Though the impact of the earthquake was

widespread in Mexico City, the neighborhoods where they live were not as heavily damaged as others in the city. Both mis-

sionaries are actively working with volunteers from the Methodist Church and from local universities to assist with clean

up and assessment. The community is in great need of pastoral support as many people have died because of the earthquake.

There is also need for housing, food, and non-food items for families who have lost their homes.

Hello church! I am excited to begin serving as the Director of Children’s Ministries.

My family and I have been faithful members of UMCPB since 2003. Glen and I entered the fellowship of

this church through the choir. We love to sing and we actually met in a church choir while attending college at

UF! When we had children, I became heavily involved in children’s ministry. I have a heart for children and

moving into this role feels like a natural step in many ways. When I’m in a room full of children, I’m in my

comfort zone. I enjoy their inquisitiveness, their refreshing way of seeing the world, and their contagious joy.

In other ways, I am stepping out of my comfort zone. With adults, I tend to be an introvert. I’m not the first

person to say hello, I like to keep to myself, and tend to get absorbed into my own thoughts. So I’m gonna

have to step out of my box in some

areas of work and I need you to do the same.

The work of children’s ministry takes a lot of volunteer power. We need about 20 volunteers a week to run

the Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday night programming. I am thankful for those faithful

people who’ve served our children over the years. But church, it’s not enough. We need more people to step

out of their box and help to raise up the children of UMCPB and teach them the love of God. Now to be honest, not everyone who wants to help is gifted in teaching children and that’s ok. My priority is to advocate

for the children of UMCPB and place people who have the gifts and talents to serve them. So I do need people

who can lead or help with children’s programming. However, if that’s not your thing, there are lots of other

ways you can serve the children of the church. We need snacks for Sunday School. We are starting a welcome table in the hallway on Sunday mornings and need smiling faces to welcome families into the church.

Maybe you like sending cards and can send them to our children to let them know they are loved.

If God is speaking to your heart, listen and take action. I did! Where He leads me I will follow and I want you

to come along beside me.

In His grace,

Kate
