In April 2017, W+D acquired Halm
Industries, the leader in offset
and digital printing machines
for envelope overprinting. The
integration of the Halm employees
as well as the adaption of its
products and work processes have
gone smoothly. At PRINT17, held this
past September in Chicago, W+D
introduced the W+D Halm i-Jet
inkjet envelope overprinting press,
which was a perfect complement
to our W+D BB700 S2 and W+D 410
Easy Enveloper and received very
strong recognition and appreciation
Challenges as “door openers”

from the many visitors to our booth.
The W+D Halm i-Jet received special
recognition even before the show
started when a 30-member selection
committee recognized this product
with the “Must see’em” prize that is
awarded for innovation, ease-of-use
and high throughput.
This is yet another incentive for us
to be active and creative so we can
achieve our very best results for
you.
We look back on an exciting year in which many new doors opened for us. We were able to approach new customers at trade fairs like Hunkeler Innovationdays and MIAC in 2017 and even introduced our own new series of events, Direct Mail Days.
Thanks to the many customers
and exhibitors who participated in
Direct Mail Days. What started out
as an idea and experiment in 2016 to
promote “Creative Direct Mail” will
be continued next year and you will
find more information on this event
on pages 4-5. So save the date, the
next Direct Mail Days will be held on
June 13-14, 2018, in Neuwied.

Our ENVacard™ sample is no longer glued on here?
Then please contact the person you deal with at
W+D and ask for a sample.
ENVacard™, our new type of mailing which is included in this edition, offers envelope manufacturers a further option for producing innovative direct mailings with their existing W+D envelope machines because ENVacard™ can be produced on the W+D models 320, 326, 410 and 627*.
The result looks like a conventional postcard,
but offers manufacturers and marketing
specialists new, interesting functionalities
and design possibilities. Windows from
transparent material or metallic paper,
perforation and form cuts are just
to name a few. Adding an NFC tag
is also possible, especially since
Apple has now opened its APIs
(additional equipment modifi-
cations required). The ENVa-
card™ provides an excellent
way to catch the receiver’s
attention, increasing re-
sponse rates in turn.
ENVacard™ lets you
personalize your
mailings in-house
and out-of-the-
box, without
having to
show any-
one any
personal in-
formation, just
like with tradi-
tional postcards.
Information is only
visible when the re-
ceiver opens it.
A special ENVacard™ kit
is available to produce the
ENVacard in both maximum
first-class postcard size and
maximum letter size depen-
ding on machine capacity/con-
figuration.
The ENVacard™ fulfills all the auto-
mation requirements of a post office
and therefore makes a decisive contri-
bution to saving postage costs.

Direct Mail Days: Exciting discussionforum on direct mail
Direct mail continues to prove it has significant advantages over alternative, mostly digital commu-nication channels when it comes to getting the envelope opened. Trust, durability and various design possibilities give direct mail a solid position within the omni media or cross-media mix, at a time when digitalization is forging ahead. Physical direct mail can represent a welcome change for the addressee as creative and well executed direct mail stands out from standard forms of communication.
But where can market participants
obtain an overview of the latest
technological possibilities and con-
cepts? W+D has already been asking
itself this question for some time. For
this reason, W+D cooperated with the
European envelope manufacturers
association FEPE to establish Direct
Mail Days, an event that took place for
the first time in Neuwied from June
28-29, 2017. The event turned out to
be an exciting and diverse discussion
forum and aroused great interest
among the roughly 110 participants
from the envelope, printing and
supplier industries.
Variety of trends and developments in direct mailing
Select speakers from the industry
and associations examined the topic
from the market’s point of view as
well as with regard to current trends
in Europe and the US. The focus of
the event was on the possibilities
envelopes offer to create added value
for mail through their feel, layout and
personalized nature.
As keynote speaker, Dr.
Sean Smyth of Smithers Pira
explained the “Direct Mail Trends
in Europe” on the first day and Lisa
Kretschmann complemented
this information with the
latest market figures.
By presenting many
different examples
of creative cam-
paigns, Klaus
Schulz from Verband der deutschen
Briefumschlag-Industrie e.V. (The
Association of the German
Envelope Industry) showed
how direct mailings can
support e-commerce.
Ulbe Jelluma and Stefan
Küchler from Print Power also
presented campaigns that were
able to increase response rates
through creative and thus attention-
grabbing direct mailings. Heike
Industry trade magazines also assessedDirect Mail Days positively

Barjenbruch, Head of Deutsche Post’s
Direct Marketing Center in Koblenz,
on the other hand, highlighted the
latest findings on advertising
effect principles and proved
that advertising that appeals
to as many human senses
as possible is guaranteed
to create more attention, as
eye tracking results, among other
insights, have shown.
Andy Schipke of W+D presented the
latest US market trends and brought
examples of successful direct mailings
and creative envelope solutions. With
his presentation, Reinhard Glade
showed how to put these solutions
into practice and how they can be
inserted.
Andreas Rossbach
of Novadex built the
bridge to the digital world
and explained the potentials
of individualized cross-media
marketing communication that
a cloud service offers.
Furthermore, a live demon-
stration of personalizing the
participants’ addresses online with
certain visual attributes (e.g. gender,
city) and then directly printing them
onto envelopes with the W+D 234 dL,
which was also on exhibit, proved to
be a highlight as visitors were clearly
fascinated. Practical applications
were a main focus at Direct Mail
Days and were in no short supply, as
the respective W+D machines were
demonstrated here too.
Practice complements theory perfectly
The W+D 410 Easy Enveloper, now
with two window gluing sections
and a hot-melt pressure-sensitive
adhesive station, showed how fast
and easy it is, not just to change
envelope sizes, but also to make
a printing change to the newly
developed Inline-Flex blank printing
unit thanks to the sleeve technology
for inside and outside printing of the
envelope.
Comments on Direct Mail Days
The combination of theory and practice went down well with participants:
“What we really appreciated at
Direct Mail Days was the quality
of the presentations and the
important impulses we received
for our future envelope program/
portfolio,”
said Markus Molch, Authorized
Signatory / Site Management at
MEILLERGHP.
“The W+D 410 Easy Enveloper
envelope machine on display
demonstrated that there are
already technical solutions that
can put those ideas into practice
economically. Direct Mail Days
were a complete success for us.”
Finally, Walter Retz, Operations
Manager at Wolanski GmbH,
summed it up nicely:
“As a shipping service provider, it
was great to get to know the new
possibilities of direct mailings.
With the knowledge we gained at
Direct Mail Days, we will be able to
make innovative suggestions to our
customers. Essentially, all parties
stand to benefit from this.”
Save the Date:Direct Mail Days 2018Due to the numerous positive
responses from customers and
exhibitors, we have decided to host
the event again next year:

W+D Halm i-Jet digital printing machines arein demand in the US
Data-Mail, one of the largest full-service direct mail companies in the US, has purchased its first new envelope production system, a W+D Model 627RC equipped with a W+D 201 4/1 Flexo common impression (Ci) press. Data-Mail invested in the 627RC/201CI production line because it was an easier to operate, faster to change production line that will also produce up to 1,200 high
Demand for the new W+D Halm i-Jet printing systems is high in the United States and one of its first customers, Northeastern Envelope Co., has now just completed the installation of its second W+D Halm i-Jet press.
These digital printers, which can print
up to 32,000 envelopes per hour,
combine Memjet printing technology
with the familiar reliability of the
Halm Jet Press and also utilize the
Harlequin Navigator RIP, which is
quality envelopes per minute.

graphic and variable data.
The Halm i-Jet is characterized not
only by its incredibly high printing
speed, excellent quality and low
maintenance costs, however. Thanks
to its versatility, Northeastern Enve-
lope can now seamlessly print and
produce smaller and larger orders
with a special color or four colors
with the shortest changeover times.
Variable data processing also allows
customers to individually customize
mailings.
Terrence Burke Jr., VP of Northeast-
ern Envelope Co., comments on the
new additions: “The new technology
is perfect for our everchanging
industry and gives us the opportu-
nity to open up new areas and
markets.”
The full-service provider, which
has been active on the market for
more than 60 years, currently has
the largest machine park of printing
systems for processing envelopes in
the US thanks to the installation of
the two inkjet printing machines.
W+D North America is in talks with
many other US customers and has
already received orders for the
W+D Halm i-Jet, meaning produc-
tion of these products can continue
successfully. PRINT17 in Chicago
even honored the machine exhib-
ited there with the “Must see ’em”
award.

W+D exchange modules can save production
W+D Online Training – for optimal usage and upkeep of your machine
For some time now, we have been offering our tissue customers module exchanges such as folding and tray cylinders or cutting modules to prevent unexpected machine breakdowns due to wear. As an alternative to a new spare part, customers receive a completely overhauled exchange module as a new value repair at a fixed price. This is pre-assembled, with settings preset as far as possible.
We’re expanding our training program. Along with our tried and tested W+D training courses on site at your company or at W+D in Neuwied, you can now book our location-independent W+D Online training program. We’re starting with the W+D 410 Easy Enveloper and will be gradually extending our offering.

This concept is becoming increasingly
popular. In April, for example, at a
Polish customer’s site, an unexpected
cross cutter failure led to a halt in
tissue production. Since the machine
was booked with orders, the right
W+D exchange module was perfectly
on cue. The customer was able to
independently install the new cross
cutter a few days later. In addition, the
spare cross cutter improved vacuum
supply maintenance. The machine
was fully operational again within a
short time.

In preparing for Direct Mail Days,
60 W+D employees focused
on a health-related goal by
participating in a virtual company
race that is accurately measured
with step counters, called the
Tappa Run where from May to
June, participants amassed an
average of more than 14,000
steps per day.
Competing in the medium-size
company class, the W+D team
won the bronze medal overall
with two of our teams achieving
second and ninth place finishes
and in the individual awards,our

I am W+D
“When you do good, it comes back around sooner or later” – Frans Persoon, the new head of the sub-sidiary in Warmond in the Netherlands (formerly Halm Industries), is firmly convinced of this.
He began his career here 30 years ago
as a technician. He was then named
Deputy Service Manager and, most
recently, Project Manager responsible
for internal technical coordination.
After the acquisition of the printing
machine manufacturer by W+D in
April 2017, Persoon is delighted that
the site can continue its development
in a positive working environment
and that the human factor plays a
central role in the company. After all,
as he puts it, “developing a product
is one thing. It’s the people who
make the difference and lead it to
success.”
Persoon is convinced that the
combined know-how of W+D and
Halm Industries will create new and
exciting solutions for both current and
future customers. Frans Persoon is
married and father to a son who loves
rugby.
It’s often underestimated how important the right usage of an appropriate window gummer in envelope machines is for production. Due to that, you can find some tips for correct storage and installation right here.Prior to installation:Before using the new window gummers, it’s important to pay attention to certain aspects• the gummer shafts should not have any shaft runout • the surface of the gummer should not have any contact to the packaging (this can cause height difference prior to the first use) • the gummer should not be placed on a surface prior to installation to also prevent a height difference During installation:If the gummer can be pushed too easily onto the shaft, this is a sign of deviations in the fitting dimensions, which are attributable to wear. Original W+D gummers are produced with the highest precision and meet these requirements for accuracy.Your advantages:• If all of the above points are considered and there is no problem with the duct roller or the application roller of the adhesive unit, an even transfer of adhesive is guaranteed if the transfer of adhesive is minimal • By that, close to the edge rubberizing now enables minimal adhesive consumption and a high-quality standard – even at high speeds
Feel free to contact your W+D contact person in case you have any questions!
