In your quest to create a professional image, remember that appearances count towards creating a good first impression. The key is presenting an image that says you are confident, credible, trustworthy and approachable. Pay attention to the company dress code and grow your wardrobe accordingly. Look for acces-sories to complement your ensemble and give you that polished look. Ditch the flip flops and backpack for work appropriate shoes and a smart looking bag.

Dress for Success

Choose a solid color that isn’t distracting. Dark blue makes you seem calm, controlled, trustworthy and secure. Wear clothes that fit. Clothes that are too large or too tight are unflattering and do not belong in the workplace. Pay attention to details! Polish your shoes, iron out the wrinkles, use a lint roller before walking out the door.

Your wardrobe choices might seem like a small factor in the scheme of things, but making a good impression is more important than you think! Nothing suc-ceeds like the appearance of success.

Shopping—The Rule of Three

Do you have three things to wear it with?

Can you think of three places to wear it?

Can you think of three ways to accessorize it?

Be Likeable

Your ability to fit in and work with others will determine the overall presence you project at work. A smile, warm greeting, eye contact, firm handshake, or head not are just a few simple actions you can take to increase likeability. Remember, your attitude determines your altitude!

How to Search Like a ProGoogle

The internet is big—really, really big. And it keeps growing bigger every day. If you want to search it effec-tively you’re going to need to develop a couple of tricks to help you narrow the search. Here are a few real easy ones to integrate into your next search: Using +, - and “ “ (quotes) to narrow your searches:

Let’s say you were looking up apples on Google.com. If you just type in apples you get 22 million returns. A few more sites than you can check in an afternoon so lets narrow the search down. Let's say that what you're really interested in is green apples. To see all the apple websites that also have the word green on them type this: apples +green. Now you will only see those apple sites that also have the word green on them. Unfor-tunately we are still getting almost 6 million returned websites. To narrow the search even more let’s elimi-nate a word. For example, some of the websites are also about Apple Computers so lets get rid of them by typing this: apples +green -computers. That reduced about 1 million of the returns but we still have about 5 million web pages to check out. A final way to narrow the search is to use quotes to narrow the search to an exact phrase.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Try using +, - and “ “ to narrow a search on the internet. This technique will work in most search engines, not just Google. Give it a try today! http://www.180techtips.com

Texas Educational Support Staff Association

TESA is the only national association that represents, serves, and offers professional development for office professionals working in any educational setting, from preschool to higher education and even state departments of education. This association has a rich his-tory, dating back to 1951. Since then TESA has been dedicated to providing outstanding programs for educational office professionals across the state through the STEM Program, locally sponsored TESA Area Workshops, and outstanding Summer Work Conferences.

Reasons for Joining TESA

Responsibility - It is your personal responsibility to see that our profession goes forward in education. Education is changing as our work is. We need to accept this responsibility of adapting to these changes.

Expectation - We can reach our expectations through our united efforts. Our goal to be recognized as professionals can best be reached through our Association.

Advancement - Our advancement in professional status can best be pushed through joint effort. Other associations have demonstrated the need to have a strong association. Only through your efforts can we have a strong Associa-tion.

Satisfaction - TESA creates wider horizons and broader views for all members. The personal satisfaction a member can find in working with such a group is beyond measure.

Opportunity - There is an opportunity for YOU, each and every one of YOU, to help TESA reach its goals. ONLY YOU have the opportunity to do this.

Need - TESA has a very definite need for you, for your help, and you have a definite need for TESA. Never let it be said that you as an educational secretary or office personnel, are allowed to cry and weep over your position and status if you do not put forth the effort to move forward.
