As Winter approaches and dark morning and even darker nights descend upon us the school is as busy as ever.
As range of wonderful events have taken place with more to come in the next few weeks as the onward march to
Christmas becomes even more hurried. Our annual Celebration of Success ceremony took place last week and was a
great success. I am sure we were all thrilled as we watched more pupils than ever receive a certificate of
achievement. My thanks to all involved and especially Ms Michaela Hinchin for her inspirational talk.
Recently, our Nursery held a stay and play session for our parents and we were delighted with the participation of so
many parents and their very positive feedback. As always the school became the residence of witches and werewolves
in the lead up to Halloween with a very successful Halloween dress and cake competition as well as a disco.
Just this week the school received its certificate for its participation in the Guinness Book of Records Big Smile event
and pupils who took part received their own certificate in commemoration of the event.
Nevertheless, the focus on teaching and learning is key to everything we do as the senior school prepares for the SQA
prelims in the near future and pupils in the junior school and primary work on the various assessments of their
learning.
Some key dates for your diary are the Parent Council AGM on Monday 13th November to which
all parents are welcome. The PTA Christmas Fayre on Saturday 25th November and the One
Heart One Mind Ladies Night is on 2nd December, which is set to be a great night. Dr Laura J Murphy

Fernhill School is renowned for celebrating the success of its pupils and this year’s Celebration of Achievement Event in Hamilton Town Hall was one of the finest displays of talent the school has ever seen.
Pupils from Primary 4 to S6 were congratulated for their achievements and endeavours in academic, musical, religious, sporting and other extra curricular activities.
As well as sharing in the pupils’ success, parents were entertained by a host of talent including both the junior and senior choirs, solo instrumentalists, singers and our very own Fernhill Factor winners, St. Joseph’s, who sang their own remix of several popular songs. Thank you to Michaela Hinchin who gave a wonderful and inspiring speech to everyone, sharing her memories as a pupil at Fernhill School and providing words of wisdom to our pupils. A wonderful evening which we were delighted to share with so many of our parents.

Our Secondary Pupils got into the Halloween Spirit at the House Halloween Cake and Costume Competitions. They also en-
joyed a great night at the Secondary Disco! A wonderful effort was made by everyone involved.
Our Primary and Nursery Pupils also got into the Halloween mood with dressing up, dancing, playing games and paraded costumes.
Primary 1 invited their parents to lunch on Friday and also brought them into their class to let them see the great work they've been doing. It was a fantastic afternoon and the boys and girls loved having you with them.
Our Nursery pupils welcomed parents, grand parents, friends and other family members to join and play with them. We were delighted to see so many people take the opportunity to come and look at our wonderful learning environment and to join in the fun. Everyone had a terrific morning and we look forward to opening our doors again on Friday 23rd February.
Fernhill School Head Teacher, Dr Laura Murphy, was delighted to attend an educational forum at
Buckingham Palace.
Muminah Koleoso of S5 attended the 'JP Morgan Generation Tech' event at the weekend. The event was aimed at S5 and S6 girls with a view to encouraging them to dip their toe into the world of computing. Pupils took part in a Hackathon (this is an event which takes place regularly across the country, usually aimed at university students - coders get together to find a solution to a world problem like hunger, poverty, poor education etc). Pupils were given the challenge of designing an
app which would do exactly that! Muminah worked in a team with two pupils from Cathkin High School and together they designed an app which would improve education, making their way
through to the finals to eventually emerge as overall winners!
Well done to Muminah for representing the school and for such an outstanding achievement!

What an adventure Primary 2 had at the Sea Life Centre in Loch Lomond when they participated in lots of 'under the sea' activities with the centre leaders. Having studied sea life as their inter disciplinary topic this term, the boys and girls were able to impress the experts with their knowledge of all matters sea related as well as some very interesting food chain facts. They had clearly been engaged in their learning over the past few months and were complimented for their knowledge, their behaviour and their enthusiasm.
As part of their Space topic Primary 3 visited the Glasgow Science Centre and took part in some fantastic workshops which helped to consolidate all of their learning so far. Their first workshop saw them working together to investigate the forces needed to put a rocket into space. Later on at the Planetarium, they had a chance to experience the night sky and even had a 'trip' to the moon and Jupiter! It was a wonderful, fun-filled day and is certain to have inspired some future astronauts...watch this space!
Fernhill students were commissioned to celebrate interfaith week this November by Archbishops Fitzgerald and Conti at the Interfaith Conference.
S6 pupils Monica and Siobhan represented Fernhill School at a Caritas Awards Commissioning Service at Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral in Motherwell. It was a beautiful service led by Bishop Joseph Toal.
The Parent Council AGM is being held in the
School Hall on Monday 13th November at 7pm.
All parents are very welcome to attend.
