LET’S CELEBRATE OCTOBER 2-8 2016

4-H is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a com-munity of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. Kids complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and citizenship, in a posi-tive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Kids experience 4-H in every county and parish in the country—through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and 4-H camps.

4-H’s reach and depth is unmatched. 4-H reaches kids in every corner of America - from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farm-ing communities. Our network of 500,000 volunteers and 3,500 4-H profes-sionals provides caring and supportive mentoring to all 6 million 4-H’ers, helping them grow into true leaders and in life.

Youth to Explore Drones in World's Largest Youth-Led En-

gineering Design Challenge

4-H NYSD is the world’s largest youth-led engi-neering design challenge, drawing nearly 100,000 participants in 2015. This year’s challenge, called Drone Discovery, will teach youth a wide variety of topics related to unmanned flight including flight dynamics, aircraft types, safety and regulations, remote sensing and flight control. Designed by Cornell University Cooperative Extension, the hands-on, three part engineering design challenge will allow youth to experiment with fixed and rotary wing designs, explore the concept of remote sens-ing and dive into the world of coding for real-world drone applications.

Youth will conduct the experiment at hundreds of local events taking place in all 50 states, and in countries around the world. National 4-H Council will host the flagship national event, with hundreds of youth participating in the challenge on October 5 in Washington, D.C. The national sponsors of 2016 4-H NYSD are HughesNet®, Lockheed Mar-tin and U.S. Cellular.

October Yard & Garden Calendar

Rake or shred large, fallen tree leaves such as maple, to prevent them from matting down and smothering grass.

September and October are good months to apply broadleaf weed killers. Be sure to follow all label directions.

Continue mowing lawn as needed.

Harvest pumpkins and winter squash before frost, but when rind is hard and fully colored. Store in a cool location

Remove plant debris from the garden to protect next year's plantings from insect and disease buildup. Compost plant refuse

by alternating layers of soil, plant material, and manure or commercial fertilizer.

Have garden soil tested for fertilizer needs every three to five years.

Plowing and incorporating organic matter in fall avoids the rush of garden activities and waterlogged soil in spring. Soils pre-

pared in the fall tend to warm faster and allow earlier planting in spring.

Dig tender garden flower bulbs for winter storage. Gladiolus corms should be dug when leaves begin turning yellow. Caladi-

ums, geraniums and tuberous begonias should be lifted before killing frost. Dig canna and dahlia roots after a heavy frost.

Allow to air dry, then pack in dry peat moss or vermiculite, and store in a cool location.

Complete planting of spring-flowering bulbs.

An interview with Debbie Schnapf ~ 2016-2017 County President

Debbie Schnapf and I had the pleasure of riding together to attend the Evansville District Fall Meeting in Posey County. During the drive through the beautiful countryside, Debbie shared stories about how she became a Homemaker and what the organization means to her. Her mother, Lula Schnapf, was a charter member of Oak Grove Homemakers Club. There were times her mother would find a baby-sitter to watch her and her brother (Tim) in order to attend Club meetings and activities. When she couldn’t, Debbie would go along with her and there were always other children she could play with. I asked Debbie what her favorite memories from childhood were. She recalled a time when all of the ladies dressed up for a Halloween Party hosted in the basement of Norma Collin’s house (my beloved grandmother). She laughed at the memory of Theresa Schuble wearing a baby costume with mustard stains on the diaper because she was surprised to see it; the la-dies were had so much fun. Then, Fannie Henshaw hosted the messiest craft lesson in her living room; she recalled the ladies having so much fun making straw wreathes. There was straw everywhere, but the ladies didn’t mind the mess it made and just laughed while they fin-ished their project (naturally, everyone pitched in to clean up). Lula so loved being a Club member that Debbie continued to drive her for several years be-fore joining herself. Debbie cherishes the many wonderful memories made over the years. I was curious if she had a favorite lesson; there were many she enjoyed learning and valued, Organized educational tours seemed to top the list. She enjoyed serving as Oak Grove Club’s Treasurer and President. Not only does she enjoy being a Homemaker, she also cherishes the years she’s spent educating youth at Gateway Baptist Church in Newburgh. She is devoted to her family and looks forward to family reunions and holidays each year. Her first board meeting took place on September 8th and the County Officers are looking for-ward to sharing their work with members at the next Council meeting on October 13th.
