Traditional Service of Worship - 9:30 a.m. October 2 Rev. Paul Phillips October 9 Rev. Diane Christopher October 16 Guest Rev. George Pike October 23 Rev. Paul Phillips October 30 Rev. Diane Christopher

I shared this message at The Source a couple of days before Larry died. I feel it is appropriate to share it again at this me with all of you. During my sabba cal, I read a book about various birds in the Bible. One of the birds is the vulture. Do you know where the vulture shows up in the Bible?

Here in Arizona we have the turkey vulture. If you look up in the sky and see a large bird cruising the airwaves, how can you tell if it is a hawk/eagle or a vulture? There are two ways to tell. A hawk or eagle’s wings are straight out. A vulture’s wings go up into a slight V. Another way to tell the difference is that vultures wobble when they fly. A hawk or eagle flies straight.

Now, where do you find vultures in the Bible? The Hebrew word nesher is o en translated as “eagle,” but most scholars agree that “vulture” is perhaps a more fi ng transla on. So think about your favorite eagle verse: “They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles…” (Isaiah 40:31) Now, read this verse again and replace “eagles” with “vultures.”

Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, does it? But think about this: There are mes in our lives when we don’t feel like we are moun ng up with wings

like eagles. Doesn’t faith at mes feel more like to ering or wobbling? “Faith for me is not like the strong, smooth, sure-of-itself eagle soaring; but rather the wai ng, wobbling, awkward circling of those blown-by-the-merest-whiffs-of-wind turkey vulture” (From Consider the Birds by Debbie Blue)

Our church is wobbling. Your faith may feel that way, too. But next me you see a turkey vulture cruising the airwaves remember it teaches us when our faith is wobbly, we can s ll soar.

Peace,

Rev. Diane Christopher, Pastor of Discipleship

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Ma hew 11:28 Presbyterian Disaster Assistance grief counselors came to us

immediately a er Pastor Larry’s death. They were suppor ve and helpful. They listened to our ini al shock, pain and suffering. We needed them and I, for one, am glad they were here.

One of the grief counselors explained to me that a er a natural disaster, usually 6, 7, or 8 weeks into the recovery, PDA goes in and offers a retreat on spirituality of life. The retreat is designed to help the caregivers, who by now are ge ng really red and burned out, pay a en on to their personal needs. It is a reminder of the need to replenish and renew their strength and purpose.

PDA teaches three cri cal areas of spirituality in life: Sense of Purpose Sense of Connectedness Sense of Awe

There are three ques ons I have been asked repeatedly by PDA as we move forward at VPC. I share them with you as a way to check in with yourself, process the grief, and begin to look at the spiritual prac ces you may be doing at this me.

Sense of Purpose – We all want this in our life. God created us unique and having different gi s. God calls us to be something special within his kingdom. Do you have a sense of purpose in your life?

Sense of Connectedness – A spiritual life is a life in rela onship; with God and with others. Rela onships are vital and important ways we stay connected to one another. Do you feel a sense of connectedness in your life?

Sense of Awe – This is the one area we usually forget. PDA recommends walking; taking a “Walk of Gra tude” and making mental notes of all the things around you that you are grateful for. It is a way to look at the world and know that God, in his infinite wisdom, is here to support those of us who are weary and carrying heavy burdens. Do you have a sense of awe about God’s presence in the world? God has not abandoned us. We are not alone. Praise God!

The peace of Christ be with you,

Rev. Paul Phillips, Pastor of Care

Remembering Pastor Larry What do you say about a pastor who was known for his colorful socks and es? How about his loud, enthusias c singing voice? Or, his love for his family? For his country? The Church? The Bible? For God? Larry DeLong was passionate, scholarly, faithful, responsible, gi ed, selfless and kind, crea ve and whimsical. He was full of evoca ve ideas and had a mind that was always thinking wonderful and deep theological thoughts.

He loved this church and its people. He li ed up his associates and called them friends. He did not call himself “senior pastor,” but simply “pastor.” He did not call his colleagues “associate pastors,” but simply “pastor.” He made sure they were honored and valued in this church.

Larry walked alongside people of this church. He visited the sick, sat by the bedside of the dying, made many phone calls, and visited people in their homes.

Larry’s love for God and his great desire to serve God to the fullest was evident in all that he did. His faith was strong and sure, and made sure ours was, too. He was devoted to the Bible, o en stopping one of us to share a special gem from scripture that touched his heart. His scholarly mind went in so many direc ons that at mes, we must admit, we couldn’t follow. But it didn’t ma er, he was happy in that new thought about God.

A er Larry died, one of our members had a dream about him. Some people were in one of our classrooms discussing how to hang a poster about a Bible Study on a wall. Tape could ruin the paint job; tacks would put

holes in the wall. As they debated the issue, they heard Larry coming down the hall, whistling. He stopped in the classroom, noted what they were doing and said, “It’s not about the wall; it’s about the message on the poster.” This is what Larry taught us. It’s all about God!

We will miss you, Pastor Larry.

All our love,

The Congrega on of Valley Presbyterian Church

Valerie, Sadie, and Seth want to personally thank everyone for flowers, cards, food, and gi s. The feeling of remembrance of Larry is heartwarming to us all. Thank you for being so suppor ve of us at such a horrible

me. Also, we want the congrega on to know that the help that we received from our personal friends, most

of whom are members of the congrega on, was immediate and constant. Valley Presbyterian Church has certainly brought valuable people into our lives.

The local Presbytery Execu ve and pastors of the Presbytery, as well as the na onal Presbyterian Church have been showing, and con nue to show, support to us as well (as they have our congrega on). More than ever, we appreciate the connec on we have to the greater church.

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study

Sundays at 8:45 a.m. in Classroom 5

The Sovereignty Nature of Jesus

As Americans we pride ourselves on being independent. As self-made men and women, we strive to achieve greatness based on our own hard work and talents. We reject the idea that we “have to” follow the dictates of any king or emperor. Yet, as Chris ans, we willingly and joyfully choose to follow the dictates of God through the teachings of Scriptures and the life of Jesus.

This month the Adult Sunday Bible Class will focus on the book of Hebrews and how it’s author upholds Jesus as both the great High Priest and the perfect person of faith. The class meets every Sunday morning at 8:45 and is done in me to join worship. All are welcome! Come, enjoy, learn, and grow in your Bible knowledge and faith with a caring group of people who travel with you.

Men’s Weekday Bible Studies Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m.

Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m.

Two church-sponsored men’s groups mee ng during the week would be glad

to have you join them! The first one meets on Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. They are currently discussing the Warren Wiersbe series of books on Colossians. A group of six to twelve men meet at the Old Chicago Deli in the Green Valley Mall for one hour. The group meets for fellowship, food, study and an all-around lively discussion. Dave Tompkins is the leader (399-3500).

The second group, with about seven to thirteen men a ending each week, meets Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m. This group meets at the church for one hour in classroom 1. The group is facilitated by Larry Phillips (777-8027), but focuses on group discussion. They are studying Proverbs using the NavPress Life Change Series study guide. Join the group any me to par cipate in the discussion or just to listen. In either case, your presence will be welcomed. Lessons are self-contained so feel free to join the group when able.

The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem Coming in Advent

We know it is a bit early to think about Advent, but we are looking forward to this All-Church Event that begins the end of November. For five weeks in Advent, as a whole congrega on we will follow the footsteps of Mary and Joseph as they travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, thereby gaining insight into our own journeys with Christ.

You will have an opportunity to study with others in small groups or in a class, read a devo onal, and then hear a sermon on what you have studied. We believe this opportunity to come together as a whole Body of Christ will be healing for our hearts, souls and mind. Sign-ups begin Sunday, October 23. Check the November Valley Voice for more details.

Our discussion leader for our October mee ng will be our own Pastor Paul! He will lead us in a discussion of the mystery WICKED AUTUMN: A MAX TUDOR NOVEL by Agatha Award-winning author, G.M. Malliet.

What could be more dangerous than cozy village life in the English countryside?

Mr. Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold’s in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip.

The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. Now he has found a measure of peace among urban escapees, yoga prac oners, ar sts, cra ers and New Agers. But this new-found serenity is quickly sha ered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women’s Ins tute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max’s training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play.

Join us for a lively discussion. If you have ques ons, please call Anne Morrison at 399-0762.

The History of Christian Theology Continuing in October on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the Spiritual Life Center

The Inquisitors will con nue studying The History of Chris an Theology. All of us have been exposed to various por ons of Chris an theology, but our knowledge bases have gaping holes. Most of us come from varied Chris an tradi ons and now we worship together in our current se ng. We communicate regularly with other Chris ans of other denomina ons and yet we do not understand where each other are coming from. Join us as, with Professor Phillip Cary, we examine intriguing insights from a wide range of intellectual disciplines, including religion, history, and philosophy. Through this course, we will gain these benefits:

An understanding of the meaning of faith for today's Chris ans. The best way to understand one's own faith is to understand the faith of others. In this course, you explore how the differences among today's Chris ans first arose and why these differences ma ered so much to previous genera ons of believers that they have le their mark on Chris an life to this day.

A fascina ng overview of the history of the Chris an church. From the Nicene Council to the Reforma on to Va can II, this course highlights the major events of church history and provides a valuable and enlightening complement to other courses on Western history.

An apprecia on of the philosophical depth of Chris an thought. Professor Cary examines the intellectual rigor that underlies Chris an theology and explores the some mes frui ul, some mes conten ous rela onship between religion and philosophy. Through this course, you gain a deeper grasp of the role of Chris an theology within the larger intellectual history of the West.

Dr. Phillip Cary is a Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, where he is also Scholar-in-Residence at the Templeton Honors College. He has also taught at Yale University, the University of Connec cut, and the University of Har ord. As a scholar, Professor Cary's specialty is the thought of Augus ne, but he has also published scholarly ar cles on Luther, the doctrine of the Trinity, and personal knowledge. This is just one of the Great Courses that Professor Cary has taught.

Grief Recovery Workshop Wednesdays: October 5, 12, 19, 26 and

November 2 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Some mes we are overwhelmed by feelings of grief – to the point where we just can’t get ourselves going again. The loss of a loved one can stop our forward momentum. Don’t be confused by your strong emo ons; you will survive, build a new life and find happiness!

When we lose a loved one, we grieve. The grieving process is normal and restora ve, yet we o en struggle in our grief. To help facilitate the grief process VPC offers the Grief Recovery Workshop.

Come, learn to heal and find hope in the Grief Recovery Workshop here at Valley Presbyterian Church in Classroom 5. Our next class will run five Wednesdays, October 5 through November 2, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Workshop facilitators will be Pastor Paul Phillips and Jeannie North, BSN, MC Bereavement counselor for 20 years.

The purpose of this workshop is to help par cipants:

· Understand the grief process involved a er a significant loss. · Recognize the unique pain and feelings triggered by their loss. · Reintegrate their lives as they heal and learn to cope.

If you or a friend have recently lost a loved one, are struggling with lingering grief issues, or have found difficulty in moving forward, come and join us. There is no charge, but par cipants need to pre-register with the church office (625-5023).

The Orff Angels Will Continue! The Orff Angels, founded and inspired by Kay Albrecht, will con nue on Tuesday a ernoons at 3:30 p.m. in the Sweet Family Room, beginning October 11. Joan Bell Dakin will lead and teach.

Who are the Orff Angels and what do we do? We are a group of musicians and non-musicians singing, drumming, and playing pitched and non-pitched instruments. We explore rhythms, melodies, and harmonies through ac ve par cipa on. The main body of instruments is made up of xylophones and metallophones, which are barred melodic instruments similar to marimbas. They are easy and fun to play! No experience is necessary – nor do you need to read music. You just need a desire to learn, to play, and to be open to a non-tradi onal way of making music. Go to Valley Presbyterian’s website to hear our music and to see pictures of the instruments.

You can contact Joan at [email protected], or call 520-625-9374.

We Heard it at the Grapevine About 100 persons gathered in the sanctuary to ask ques ons on Wednesday morning, September 21, to make comments and learn more about what’s going on at VPC. The two major areas of discussion were 1) addressing rumors and 2) our next steps.

Almost all rumors presented were false, and we discussed ways to respond to them and stop them.

The Presbytery will pay for a professional counselor to be at the church – one with a stronger skillset in counseling than our pastors (who are also grieving). This person will be available to meet with members at no charge.

At the Pastors’ request we will hire a temporary, part- me Execu ve Pastor to help in the coming few months. Diane and Paul will share the preaching.

No permanent changes to our pastoral staff will be considered un l we are much further along – definitely not before the new year. The Administra ve Commission from Presbytery will con nue to walk by our side, possibly for up to a year, providing advice, encouragement and support.

The termina on of Kay Albrecht as our Director of Music was a Session decision upon the recommenda on of our Personnel Commi ee.

A member from the congrega onal financial review team affirmed that the church’s financial posi on is strong. We have solid accoun ng procedures in place.

We are a grieving community. Pa ence is needed as we accept each other’s anger, fear, disbelief or hopelessness. Together, let us be the body of Christ, doing the best we can with the help of God.

Session Notes The leadership retreat for elders and deacons will be Thursday, October 13, beginning with dinner at 5:00 p.m. Rev. Rachel Srubas will lead a workshop on Building Rela onships: Self-Care and Healthy Rela onships.

A temporary, part- me Execu ve Pastor posi on was approved by Session. This posi on has been created to assist the two Associate Pastors in mee ng the Administra ve ministry needs in the near-term (4-5 months). The descrip on of this posi on follows:

Serve as pastoral support in the areas of personnel, budget and finance, stewardship, building and grounds.

Resource the commi ees involved in those areas. Provide pastoral care for staff, lay and clergy. Coordinate internal office tasks with the Associate Pastors. Serve as a relief and a resource for the Associate Pastors, administra vely Coordinate session reports, documents, and agendas for the co-moderators, in consulta on with the

Clerk of Session. Oversee the training of recently installed elders and deacons. Other du es as assigned by the Associate Pastors in consulta on with the Administra ve Commission

and the Personnel Commi ee. This posi on will have no involvement in worship leadership.

A mo on was approved from the Mission Commi ee to raise funds for an outdoor classroom (Art and Paint Sta on) for Los Niños del Valle Preschool, part of Casa Community Services. (con nued on next page)

Stephen Ministers Training

Begins January 6, 2017

Stephen Ministers are caring, loving, and healing. We care about each other; we share the love of Jesus Christ with our care receivers; and we are instruments for God to heal our souls and spirits.

If God is calling you to this kind of caring ministry, please contact Pa Bright, Recrui ng Chairman (520-305-3275), or any of our Stephen Leaders.

MAKE DISCIPLES AROUND THE WORLD

Yes, it’s that me of year again – the me when we begin to think about Christmas. Many of you are already thinking about the Opera on Christmas Child shoebox to fill with li le presents for a needy child in some part of the world. The Tucson collec on center for Opera on Christmas Child collected 14,784 shoeboxes last November. WOW!!

For the past thirteen years, VPC has generously par cipated in Opera on Christmas Child. The shoeboxes contain not only gi s for children throughout the world, but they also contain a booklet en tled The Greatest Journey. That booklet introduces children to Jesus Christ and invites them to return for a 12-week Bible Study. Samaritan’s Purse has already trained over 144,000 teachers around the world to lead these classes. These lessons are provided in over 70 languages. You can par cipate in this wonderful project by remembering the following dates.

THREE IMPORTANT DATES COMING SOON!

Sunday, October 30: pick up your shoebox

Sunday, November 6: pick up your shoebox or return the one you picked up on October 30

Sunday, November 13: return shoeboxes

ALL SHOEBOXES MUST BE RETURNED BY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13. For further informa on, contact Janice Po er at 505-9944.

In the wake of our recent tragedy there was a sudden burst of people subscribing to

our E-blast and newsle er, which only makes sense. Communica on, in whatever form, is a way for us to be together in a difficult me. Remember, though, that the E-Blast only comes out once a week, and of course this newsle er only comes out once a month. For up-to-the-minute informa on from our church, you might want to “like” the VPC Facebook page. Not only does Facebook allow you get the latest news from the church, but this past month it has been a place for people to come together and share memories and send each other messages of love and hope. Beau ful stories about Pastor Larry can be found under the original post about his passing on our Facebook page, and the photo to the right, taken this monsoon season by our own Bob Campbell, and including the comments received on Facebook, shows how people can find comfort and hope there as well. You can get to our Facebook page by going to our website, www.valleypresbyterian.net, and clicking on the “f” in the very upper right corner of the page, next to our mailing address.

Many members of our church are already on Facebook, but I know there are a lot of you who are holding out, maybe because you don’t want to take the me to learn how. If you are the least bit tempted to try it, please come to the church at noon on Thursday, October 13, In classroom 5, where I will be teaching a class called “Learning to use Facebook”. I’ll help you set up a Facebook account, and teach you how to add friends, like pages, send messages, and post comments, pictures and even videos. By the end of class you will know all the basics, and you’ll all be able to see the latest news from the church!

Grief By Parish Nurse, Chris Erickson

Grief, where are we? When someone throws a whole bucket of balls into the air, they come down to the ground bouncing all at different levels. That’s the picture I can see when I think of grief, people at all different levels of grief, different levels of emo ons, and it’s not all the same for everyone. It can come in waves, as the picture resembles.

Pastor Paul talks about three cri cal areas of spirituality: Values and plans, rela onships, and taking in what is around us. These are also very important in grief. Be present as a friend to listen and to talk about grief in a support group at VPC or at the group discussions on Tuesday or Thursdays, walk outside and just enjoy what you see, or exercise. Find a sense of purpose. These are some of the things we can do right here at VPC to enhance our spirituality.

Here are some resources to be aware of in our community:

Survivors of Suicide Tucson 520-323-8660

Na onal Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI of S.AZ) 520-622-5582

(educa on, advocacy and support to those affected by mental illness)

Renewal Centers counseling 520-791-9974

Casa Community Services (Behavioral Health/counseling) 520-393-6839

I always remember the words Jerry Lewis said and sang on his Labor Day telethon, “Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone.” This is so true. God is always with us and even in the difficult mes his feet are seen not beside ours but the only ones in the sand as He is always carrying us through.

Free Counseling Services Available In the past weeks since Larry’s death, your pastors have discovered that we are not trained to handle some of the issues that have come up in our church members’ lives. As a result, our Presbytery has extended to us a grant that allows us to hire professional counselors to come and be with us for a limited me period. Brad Munroe, the Presbytery’s pastor to the pastors, has suggested Jewish Family and Children Services (JFCS) from Tucson. Their therapists are licensed, expert and compassionate, and the counseling sessions are free to you (up to two sessions).

Here are the schedules of the two counselors who will be with us:

Sept 28 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Oct 5 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Sept 30 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Oct 7 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Please make an appointment. You can make an appointment in one of two ways: By emailing [email protected], or by calling 520-795-0300 (the office of JFCS).

When you contact JFCS, iden fy yourself with this church. This is open to church members, regular a endees, and staff.

We pray this will be of help to you as we con nue to grieve and heal.
