Progress Report

A Message to Our Community

Environmental sustainability requires that all of us, not just a few,

commit to the cause and own the solutions.

Experience has demonstrated that action at the local level is the

most effective path to change. In our community, Bedford 2020 and

our partners, collaborators and volunteers are making this change

happen. We have already made a measurable difference right here

at home.

We are tackling climate change at the grassroots level. Our goal

is to offer a bold vision of a sustainable future, backed up by hard

work, enthusiasm and a willingness to take risks. We leverage

strategic partnerships with individuals, businesses, institutions and

governments to raise awareness, find solutions and drive positive

change.

Along the way, we have learned that our projects can be

replicated successfully throughout Westchester County, and other

communities in New York State, thereby extending the impact of

our successes well beyond the borders of Bedford.

Thank you to all of you who have joined the journey — as grassroots

activists and partners — committed to creating real change in our

environment.

Together, we are making things happen.

Sincerely,

Ellen Rouse Conrad, Co-President

A Year of Impact

Engaging School CommunitiesBedford Central School District and Bedford 2020 collaborated to pilot the Greenlight Award Competition, challenging local students to dream “big green ideas”. Over 30 students submitted projects to reduce green-house gas emissions, adopt renewable energy measures, or preserve land and water resources. The winners were impressive, but all the project ideas benefited the entire Bedford community by increasing awareness and intro-ducing creative solutions generated by tomorrow’s en-vironmental leaders. Plans are underway to expand the competition to 4 schools in the 2016-2017 school year.

This year, Bedford 2020 partnered with Sustain-able Westchester to build and launch New York State’s first Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program to transition to a state-wide clean energy economy. As a result, 14 communities in Westches-ter County, including Bed-ford, have adopted a 100% renewable energy supply, including solar, wind and hydro, as an alternative to fossil fuels. Bedford 2020 is work-ing to educate and engage communities in support of Community Choice Aggregation projects throughout Westchester County, Long Island and Mid-Hudson, New York.

Reducing Landfill WasteIn partnership with the Town of Bedford, B2020 launched a pilot program in the 3 downtown business districts to create recycling bins that would improve participation by residents and shoppers. Alternative waste and recy-cling bins are being tested to determine which are most effective in reducing materials from the waste stream and re-directing them to the recycling stream. This is part of the overall goal of the Task Force: to increase the amount of waste that is recycled to keep it out of landfills and incinerators that pollute air, land and water.

Removal of invasive species is a critical part of land management to protect our land and water resources. Bedford 2020 joined the Town of Bedford, the Bedford Conser-vation Board, the Bedford Audubon Society, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Westchester, and Trillium Invasive Species Management, Inc. to eradicate the insidious, invasive, hardy kiwi vine from the Town. Bedford 2020 funded the pur-chase of tools and safety equipment for vine removal projects throughout the area.

Volunteers learn about invasive species management before putting the new tools to use to help the Town eradicate invasive kiwi vines.

Bedford 2020’s success is a result of collaboration. Envi-ronmental sustainability requires all of us, not just a few, to commit to the cause and to own the solutions. This is how grassroots organizations make change hap-pen: together. Thank you to everyone listed throughout this report, for your enthusiasm, your willingness to work hard, be creative, take risks and make a difference.

Panelists at the Bedford 2020 Power Up event, Micha Kotch,

former Director of NY Prize and Strategic Adviser for Innovation

at NYSERDA and Kate Burson, Northeast market development lead at Tesla Motors and former

Leading the FightBedford 2020 was the 2016 non-profit winner of the Morris Media Green Award that “recognizes businesses, non-profits, and individuals that are leading the local fight to protect the environment while also creating a sustainable social and economic community” in West-chester and Fairfield counties.

All That TrashMost of the waste coming out of the Fox Lane High School cafeteria is recy-clable, but not recycled. Working with the FLHS Garden Club and school administrators, Bedford 2020 held an assessment and education day to substantially redirect the waste into recycling bins and out of landfills or incinerators.

A Force of NatureBedford 2020’s founders, Ellen Rouse Conrad, Olivia Farr and Mary Beth Kass were honored at the Katonah Muse-um of Art 2016 gala, “Forces of Nature,” for their “creativi-ty, energy and commitment to our community and world.”

Waste and Recycling Task Force Chair Peter Kuniholm works with students to weigh and record the amount of waste, recycling and compost collected in the Fox Lane cafeteria.
