Headmistress’s Message

There has been much to celebrate this term, which has been filled with many events, trips and exciting lessons, as you can see in the newsletter. One of the biggest events was our October Open Day, which was extremely busy with a record number of prospective families visiting the school. It was lovely to hear their appreciative comments about the school and about the pupils, who were helpers and guides on the day. It was also an excellent opportunity for the pupils to showcase the great work that they have been doing this term.

The school sites are developing and changing on an almost daily basis: we now have a beautifully re-surfaced netball court, a lovely outside play area for the Early years’ pupils and new furniture in the Music and Drama studio. By the end of half term, the science block improvements will be complete with a new prep room and a lift fitted. We look forward to seeing the finished results!

Whilst I hope you enjoy a restful and happy half-term break, the builders will continue to work hard on site building our new kitchen development.

Ancient Egyptians at Open Morning

Visitors who came to the Open Morning saw our Year 4 class engaged in their favourite topic: The Ancient Egyptians. The Ancient Egyptians loved to wear a variety of necklaces and collars made from a huge range of materials. Of course, only the wealthy could afford gold, silver or precious stones. Shells, wood and bone were more readily available to those on a budget. Collars made from precious metals were often given as gifts by the pharaoh to loyal supporters and so were a source of great pride. Children enjoyed making their collars and enthusiastically shared what they had been learning with the visitors.

New additions to the Senior Site

There have been some new additions to the senior site this month, with work still being done towards the facelift of the school. The playground has now been resurfaced and work has also started on the kitchen extension!

Walton-on-the-Naze Trip

The GCSE Geography group had a great day out and we were extremely lucky with the weather, ideal for Fieldwork. The purpose of the day was to collect data for the girl’s GCSE Geography Controlled Assessment question. “Investigate the difference in gradient and sediment characteristics along your chosen stretch of coastline”.

The girls worked hard, measuring the angle of the beach, height of the cliffs and collecting beach sediment. We walked along the new Crag Walk beneath the Naze Tower to study the new methods of coastal protection being used in the area.

Oak-Tree Group Parents’ Associations Fireworks Display

The 2016 Group Fireworks Display will take place just after the October half term. As with last year, tickets will be available to families from the four Oak-Tree Schools.

The display will take place on Sunday 13 November 2016 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and will be held in the grounds of Oaklands School in Loughton.

Due to the enormous demand (over 1000 tickets were sold last year), tickets will only be available to purchase before the event. It will not be possible to buy tickets on the night and ticket sales will be limited to 1050.

The tickets will cost £5 per child or £10 per adult, with a discounted price of £25 for a family of 2 children and 2 adults. The ticket includes a hot dog and the children will also be given a soft drink and a cake. As usual there will be the opportunity to purchase mulled wine, beer, hot drinks and various children’s goodies during the evening.

All profits from the evening will go back to the Parents’ Associations, with the teams from Oaklands, Normanhurst, Coopersale Hall and Braeside joining together to help run the event.

History Workshops on the Victorians and Tudors

On Tuesday 18 October, Catherine Hammond, from The Epping Forest District Museum, came in to Braeside School to run two interactive workshops with the pupils. Year 6 were treated to an informative session involving Victorian artefacts, ranging from household objects through to Victorian schooldays. The pupils were able to handle the artefacts in small groups, and prepare short presentations on them for their peers. This session was much enjoyed by the Year 6 pupils, and it helped to underpin aspects of their Autumn Term History curriculum.

Year 7 were enthusiastic participants in the session which focused on the life of a middle-class Tudor tailor, and his wife, who actually lived in the residence which currently houses The Epping Forest District Museum! The girls handled some of the Tudor artefacts, which were discovered in the Sun Street house, such as eating and drinking utensils, and learnt about their daily uses. In addition, several of the pupils were able to dress up in the costumes of the time, as befitted the status of a tailor and his wife. Once again, The Tudor curriculum, as studied by pupils in Year 7 across the academic year, was enriched by this most informative and enjoyable session.

Chemistry at Work Event

On Wednesday 12 October, Year 10 took part in a ‘Chemistry at Work’ event organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Specialist Chemists came from a range of backgrounds including industry, consultancy and universities to give presentations about their jobs and careers. Braeside students particularly enjoyed listening to Mona Sood talk about her career as a Pharmacist and Min Keating’s discussion on modern medicines and their plant origins. They also learned how chemistry contributes to your lifestyle in the things you use, wear, eat and drink; and how large and diverse the number of careers available involving the Chemical sciences are.

FOBS Cake Sale

To celebrate National Baking Week, FOBS held cake sales at the Junior and Senior Schools respectively on Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 October. These proved to be a great success with the girls and an amazing £211

was raised for funds.

FOBS would like to thank all those who so generously baked and bought cakes. We were overwhelmed by the baking skills on offer. Our thanks also to those parents who gave up their time to help at the sales. It is always much appreciated.

Excitement in the Library

Book Trust have selected 10 titles that are exciting and new (some have won the Costa Book Prize) for pupils to read for pleasure. Pupils perused the books today and selected the book that they would most like to read this term.

They will then write a book review which will be displayed in the library for other pupils to see. The most popular genre with our pupils was mystery.

Roald Dahl Day Results

Roald Dahl Day this year was extra special, and the pupils celebrated by either dressing up as their favourite character from his stories, or wearing yellow, his favourite colour. In the process they managed to raise an amazing £140 that goes towards helping seriously ill children and their families live a better life. A huge thank you to everyone who took part.

Netball Development

Under 14 and under 16 netballers have played matches against Debden Park High School and Epping St John’s this month. A tremendous effort was seen from our pupils who played with determination and enthusiasm. The team continues to develop as a team and go stronger at every performance. Well done girls – keep up the hard work!

School Council Elections

Senior pupils at Braeside held their form elections this month for School Council representatives. Their first meeting was also held, where the council members represented the voices of their peers.

These roles help to develop leadership skills and opportunities for self-expression and public speaking. Being a member of the School Council is an important role as they assist the Headmistress and her staff with a variety of tasks and set an example to younger pupils and their peers.

Braeside Juniors New Bridge in Place

After much work over the summer, the finishing touches are being put into place at the junior site. This month the new walkway that joins the ground floor to the playground was fitted into place, creating easier

access to the outdoor space.

Clear Perspex is soon to also be added to the build to create a covered outdoor area for the Kindergarten to use that will not only keep out the rain, but still allow plenty of light. We look forward to this new addition to the school!

Year 11 Biology GCSE Controlled Assessments Year 11 have been working hard on their Biology GCSE controlled assessments over the course of the Autumn term. They have been investigating the process of Photosynthesis in plants. The pupils discovered ways of measuring the rate of photosynthesis and have been comparing these rates when the plant is placed under different lighting and temperature conditions.

Seniors Kitchen Project

We’re very excited at Braeside as the work has now started on the kitchen project at the senior site.

Over the course of the next two months the area previously used as a Studio will be extended and transformed into a suite of commercial kitchens with a servery opening into the School Hall.

The Oak-Tree Group uses Chartwells, one of the largest providers of food for independent schools. All food is freshly prepared each morning, fruit and

vegetables are sourced locally and meat comes from an award-winning London butcher that is part of the Red Tractor scheme. We will publish menus towards the end of this term.

Food will be prepared on the senior site and transported daily to the junior site by the Chartwells team. The new servery in the junior hall will be equipped with commercial equipment and we have created a separate entrance to help with the transportation.

Harvest Festival

Harvest is always such a nice time of year, and the Harvest Festival topped it off perfectly. Pupils from the Junior Site performed a variety of Harvest songs to a large audience of family, friends and staff. The children enjoyed singing songs such as ‘Cauliflowers Fluffy’ and ‘Vegetable Samba’. The afternoon took place at the United Reformed Church in Palmerston Road and the crowd filled the hall! Well done everyone!
