October 2016
October Newsletter Our Lady of Wisdom CES|| 10 Japonica Rd, Toronto, ON M1R 4R7 416-393-5273 F: 416-393-5434
Dear Families:
It is remarkable how quickly September has come and gone, as we brace
ourselves for the colder weather that October ushers in. On a very sad
note, on behalf of everyone at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School, it is to
Mlle. Christine, one of our best, that I would like to wish every success at
her new school this year, as our school will always remember her dedication
to her students and her optimism and professionalism above all.
October is the month of the Holy Rosary. We look forward to having Mrs.
Morin, Mrs. Mendoza and their colleagues from the Rosary Apostolate back
at Our Lady of Wisdom CES to remind our students of the importance of
“Rosary Devotion” as a prayerful means which brings much peace and
reconciliation, but more importantly helps us to communicate with God. Pope
Benedict XVI once stated that “Without a doubt, this is one of the most
eloquent signs of love that the young generation nourish for Jesus and his
Mother, Mary.”
October is also a time for expressing our thanks to God for all that we
have. As we enter the thanksgiving season let us remember those who
are less fortunate and offer our prayers and our actions to help those
in need. As the TCDSB celebrates the second phase of its new pastoral
plan: "Together With One Voice--Harmonizing Faith in our Families,
Parishes and Schools,” let us always count our blessings. We look
forward to strengthening our relationship with our Parish and may we
always remember and appreciate that the Church is always there for us
as a constant source of knowledge, spiritual guidance and fortitude.

DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP STUDENTS
For the sake of safety, we ask that in the mornings you drop
off your children in the appropriate sections of the school yard

develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe
school yard. We kindly ask that parents do not enter the
Kindergarten yard, most notably the anchored fenced area at
the north east side of the JK/SK yard to maximize visibility
for our staff during morning supervision.
The bell rings at 9 a.m. Please ensure that your child is
dropped off no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Parents should be
aware that the supervision of the children remains their
responsibility before and after school. Kindly note: There is
NO SUPERVISION in the school yard before 8:30 a.m. and
after 3:45 p.m. Supervision in our school yard begins at

OLW HEALTHY SNACK PROGRAM
In conjunction with the non-profit Angel Foundation at the
TCDSB, thank you to everyone for supporting Our Lady of
Wisdom Catholic School’s universal nutrition and healthy
snack program. The program will continue for the academic
year, 2016-2017 and has as its aim the provision of healthy
snacks for all students which adhere to Canada’s Food Guide
and incorporate 3 food groups. The program is a non-profit
initiative which is monitored by Toronto Public Health.
Snacks are delivered to classrooms daily. Should you have any
additional questions or concerns, please direct them to Mrs.
Shirley who is the nutrition program coordinator. Again, we
would like to emphasize that the administration and the
program coordinator are well aware of allergies that students
have and will take appropriate measures to ensure that the
program reflects these needs. This program plays an integral
part in giving our students a healthy boost to their school day,
every day!

Curriculum Night 2016
Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School’s gymnasium once
again transformed into a bustling center of community
involvement during our “2016 Curriculum Night.” Thank
you to the many families who came out on a typically
busy Monday evening to meet with our staff, learn
more about their children’s diverse programs of study
and gain a better understanding of class and grade
specific expectations and the parents’ role in
supporting their children’s education. It was a
phenomenal turn-out and an opportunity to meet many
new families and re-connect with the many stalwart
families that make Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic
School such a strong and vibrant school community.
Thank you to all of the teachers, homeroom, French
Specialty, our early childhood educators, special
education and support staff for welcoming the parents
of new and returning students, engaging them and
opening up their classrooms throughout the night to
give a macro view of what Catholic education within a
French Immersion model entails.
I would also like to thank our special guests, Ms.
Denise Lobo, Tutor Ambassador from TVO/ILC
Homework Help, Megan Coleman, Program Director of
Voila Learning and Alanna Barr, Liaison Public Health
Nurse-Healthy Schools Substance Misuse Prevention
Team from Toronto Public Health, for the wealth of
information and outreach that they all provided to our
families.

TVO/ILC Homework Help at OLW
Thank you to Ms. Denise Lobo from TVO/ILC’s Homework
Help for visiting with our Grade 8 and 7 students to do a live
demonstration of the www.homewrokhelp.ilc.org free math
tutorial platform. Students registered simultaneously in real
time and engaged in an informational scavenger hunt to
navigate the various components of the application and learn
more about the “locker” an archive of saved tutorials for
each respective student, the various student resources, like
the glossary and calculator and access to “Best Sessions.” All
in all, it was of great benefit for these students to get a
refresher on what benefits the application can provide and
the times of operation, as well as, experiencing first-hand
how this web-based application can provide valuable and
timely assistance with math homework, leading to greater
fluency in problem solving and computation.

Safe Schools/Student Well-Being
Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School is very pleased to
continue our partnership with Covenant House, “a
national leader in the issues of at-risk, homeless and
trafficked youth.” On October 25th, Ms. Fiona Jack
will be visiting with our grade 6, 7, and 8 students to
educate and advocate for much needed change to
address current issues facing youth in our province.
Specifically, the “Before You Run” and “Reality Check”
workshops greatly support the Ontario Ministry of
Education’s Student Success, Safe Schools and Equity
and Inclusive Education strategies and will equip our
youth with timely information to make informed
decisions and seek assistance when necessary.
Specifically, “Before You Run,” a presentation geared
towards students in grades 6 and 7, focuses on the
risk factors that can lead to youth homelessness, and
“students are given information and resources to help
them make better choices.” The “Reality Check”
presentation, geared for students in Grade 8,
emphasizes a de-glamourization of street life, looks at
empathy, identifies key resources where youth can
obtain assistance, and encourages students to lead,
volunteer in their communities and give back.
Our community liaison office, J. Wilson, will also
be visiting with our intermediate students in
grades 7 and 8 on Nov. 16th to engage students in
discussion and strategizing on the topic of the
dangers of online activity, social media and
identity theft. Our hope is that students will be
better prepared to use the technology that is
available to them prudently and safely with a
greater appreciation and awareness of the
dangers that accompany the tech that that use,
as well as, the importance of communication with
their parents.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP Thank you to Mrs. Nardozi, Mme. Bangala and Mlle. Christine
and the newly minted student members of our Me to We
student leadership team. This year has gotten off to a very
focus and benevolent start in terms of supporting our most
vulnerable members of society through our Thanksgiving/Fall
Food Drive. Thank you everyone for the many generous
donations of non-perishable and canned food items which the
students have collected since September 26th. All proceeds
will go to families in need via St. Francis Table, “a ministry of
the Capuchin-Franciscan Friars and friends committed to
creating a Faith Community with the poor through direct
services that preserve and enhance human dignity.”
This Wednesday, October 19th, 2016, a delegation of
students, excited about how they can put into action
their brand of social justice locally and globally, will go
to the Air Canada Centre for We Day! Me to We is a
year-long program dedicated to empowering students to
take action to help local and global communities in
need.
With this unique experience, we hope to inspire in these
students and in the entire school, a sense of hope and
leadership. This year, initiatives will continue to focus
on furthering the cause of social justice at home and
abroad with attention given to our most vulnerable
members of society.
Junior Achievement 2016 “JA Central Ontario is committed to engaging students and

TCDSB Acknowledges World Mental Health Day Oct.10, 2016
Each year the World Health Organization Acknowledges and Celebrates “World Mental Health Day” in October. World Mental Health Day provides us with an opportunity to reach out to those who may need support, raise awareness, and decrease stigma, or to learn more about mental health and mental illness. This year’s theme is focused on Crisis Response. Resources from the World Health Organisation can be found at http://www.who.int/mental_health/world-mental-health-day/2016/en/ World Mental Health Day also provides our TCDSB community with an opportunity to review our own TCDSB Mental Health Crisis Response Guidelines which are found on our TCDSB Mental Health page https://intranet.tcdsb.org/Departments/SpecialEducation/mentalhealth/Pages/Resources-for-Teachers.aspx Developed by TCDSB Psychology and Social Work Staff in consultation with school administrators, the TCDSB Mental Health Crisis Response Guidelines offer excellent , evidence based strategies and procedures for schools to consider when experiencing the aftermath of an event that results in mental health upset. For our students, staff, and parents, World Mental Health Day provides us with an opportunity to check in with each other and reflect on how we might be able to make our schools Mentally Healthy and Well. For more information on programs and resources supporting student mental health and well-being see https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SpecialEducation/mhs/Pages/Mental-Health-Strategy.aspx If you have questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] Sincerely, Patricia Marra-Stapleton , C.
