The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7 Dear Friends, David’s story very nearly started with him being overlooked, his oldest brother nearly receiving the blessing from the priest, Samuel, in his place. Samuel was enamored with the appearance of Eliab, David’s brother, before the Lord told him to consider something else – the heart. It’s human nature, really, to look at the surface. To go just skin deep and stop there. However, that’s not how God judges. He looks at the heart, not the surface. We are called to be discerning – to look beneath the surface to see what’s real, what’s genuine, what’s worthy. Something might look attractive at first, but what does it actually lead to? Someone might be charming on the surface, but what is their lifestyle, what is their heart like? It takes extra work to be discerning instead of a blanket acceptance of all that looks or sounds good. And it takes real effort to seek out what is truly good and godly, instead of just settling for what seems good enough. As we take a look at David’s life this month and a life “After God’s Heart”, may we be people who would truly pursue God’s own heart, as well. May we seek the best, may we be discerning, may we be wise, may we seek God and his will for us, above all. A Word From Our Pastor “But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. War Room is a movie that serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that prayer can have on our everyday lives. It is a poignant example of God’s willingness to extend grace and mercy to us even when we feel like we don’t deserve it. This movie is about faith, family, and the power of prayer on the big screen. Movie Times:

Sunday, October 2nd following fellowship time Saturday, October 8 at 6:30pm

Every Sunday Night

ALERT!!!! ALERT!!!! ALERT!!!! A very famous person is coming to CPC in October!!!

Let's see if you can guess who it is... As a kid he loved to use slingshots and was quite good at it! He used to be in charge of a large herd of sheep. He was not a giant fan! And he later became a king—becoming a man after God's own heart.

Did you guess who it is??? You are correct: it is DAVID!

We'll begin a 6 week study entitled: “David, Developing a Heart for God”

We’ll start the second week in October. Options are: Sunday at 11 AM,

Women's 7PM Monday night women’s Bible study at Judy Walton’s home, 2 PM Tuesday afternoon and 10 AM on Thursday (Both at church) & 7:00pm Thursdays @ Sarah

Van Buskirk’s home. Call the church office (448-5055) for home addresses & more information on the locations.

Come and meet David through the study, and see how each of us can further develop a heart for God.

You just can't miss it!!! Sign-ups after the worship service.

PEP School News

We had a very productive PEP School Work Day in August and greatly appreciate the parents and staff who came to help us prepare the classroom and playground for our new school year.

We had orientation for all students and their families and got off to a successful start for our first days of school on September 6 & 7. We started our school year with some very special days: water play day and Family Picnic Days at North Orchard Park where the students and their families got to know each other.

Our Bible story time with Brendan Kavanagh will begin in October. You are always welcome to join us in the classroom on Tuesdays at 11:15 and the Sanctuary on Wednesdays at 11:15 and 3:15.

October is Fire Prevention month. Our M/W/F classes will take a field trip to Fire Station #71. For our Tu/Th a.m. class, the fire department will bring one of the fire trucks to PEP, and talk to the students about fire prevention in the classroom. Both classes will enjoy the presentation designed especially for very young ones to learn about fire prevention. We will end the month with Halloween parade and parties in each of the three classes. Our school year is well under way under the leadership of Renee Inman, Director, with teachers Cindy Burnett, Karin Hendricks, Cara Thiele, Cindy Thornton and Mary Lou Gantt is our secretary. Stop by the PEP classroom anytime to watch what happens in preschool and see what the children are learning through play.

SESSION NOTES FROM THE CLERK: It is official, we are now part of a new presbytery known as the “Blue Water” Presbytery. At the September 17 meeting, the Northern California/Nevada Presbytery multiplied itself into two presbyter-ies. This is in keeping with the ECO goal of keeping presbyteries small so that we can get to know one another. Thus we leave behind the central Valley churches and join with 16 churches mostly in the Bay Area but also including 1st Presbyterian Church in Honolulu. There are now 299 churches that are part of ECO. The new presbytery includes the counties from Monterey northward up the peninsula, the east bay and Solano County. We are on the far north end of the presbytery and Carmel Presbyterian, also known as CPC, is at the southern end. You might also say that we are on the east end and Honolulu is on the west end. Pastor Wright plus Elders Anne Ruth, Debi Schrader and I attended the joint meeting of the old presbytery and the new one held at Mount Hermon on September 17. The meeting lasted all day, but business took only 45 minutes while the remainder of the day was devoted to worship and to an over-view of Elder Leadership Training. ELI (Elder Leadership Institute) training turns the Elder leadership of the church on its head leading to Session meetings that are less like board-of-director meetings and more like disciples worshiping together, sharing together and serving their church together. Expect to hear more about this as the currently serving Elders discuss how learning to work this way might better serve our church.

Vern Sandusky, Clerk of Session

NEWS FROM THE CHOIR LOFT

We hope you've noticed that the Chancel Choir is in full swing for the season, and is just loving the opportunity to share God's message through song. We are always happy to add new voices to ours! Choir practice is from 7:30-9:00 on Wednesday evenings. If you are just interested in joining us for the Christmas program, we'll be starting earlier as of September 28, practicing Christmas program music starting at 7:00, and transitioning to our "regular" Sunday music at about 7:45. We hope to see (and hear) you there! Nancy Sanchez Music Director [email protected] Notes for Our Children’s Choir:

We've been working on two great pieces for some upcoming services, and we've been having fun singing to the Lord! Our first presentation will be on October 16 - don't miss it! After that, we'll begin working on our special piece for the Christmas program. Children of all ages are welcome to join us! We practice on Sundays, from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. -Miss Nancy, [email protected]
