What DKE Means to Me

Eight brothers of Omega Mu graduated this spring. We are confident they will go on to do great things and solve great problems, and we wish them the best of luck in the real world! I asked them to share some insight on how their experience with Delta Kappa Epsilon helped and shaped the way they interact and work in professional environments. One theme I noticed both in their responses and my personal experience with DKE is the impact of diversity. Each one of our graduates has moved away from Stillwater to pursue different careers in different places. As Matt Hester noted from moving to Denver, CO, “I’m really happy how much I learned through my interactions with so many diverse people. Diversity of all kinds; class, culture, and background, help me to relate and open conversations with anyone I meet living in a new city.” Brian Andrews is currently applying for an MBA graduate program. He said that he found the opportunity to meet and get along with so many different people from various backgrounds very important in professional settings.

A second equally important theme was that of brotherhood. Ayman Janbi moved back to Saudi Arabia to work for Saudi Aramco, but he noted that DKE taught him the importance of always having a brother’s back. Brotherhood isn’t just some word thrown around to stand for friendship. As Bob Laub noted, “DKE really helped me transition into the real world because I always knew I had a group of brothers that I could always go back to and still feel at home even though I had graduated.” This comfort was echoed by Connor Dickerson, who mentioned his “friends across the country, and even in Saudi Arabia.” Brotherhood is something that we stress to old and new members alike. It means that no matter how well you get along with a brother, you know you can trust him. You know he will be there when you need help. Nick Jacobsen noted that his experiences with DKE taught him to always keep the goal in mind, highlighting that same sense of camaraderie. “Especially early on in deke, we had a lot of fun but at the end of the day we were always still working towards that goal. The same way for me in the workplace. I enjoy the day-to-day, but there’s always that goal in mind to get the job done and do it right. In the end that takes priority.”

Finally I think Brian Dorey really stated the heart of what DKE is about: “Delta Kappa Epsilon has taught me to be more confident in my life. I had a real connection with my now coworkers. The same way I had an instant connection with my fraternity brothers. Making the transition from university to my career field was a daunting experience. Not knowing where I would be in a few months really scared me. But, upon graduating, I took some time to myself and backpacked through Europe. The couple months to buffer the awkward transition helped. But, it wasn’t until I met up with my fraternity brother Daniel Lyon that my mindset began to change. He helped me see the coming months not as a scary unknown, but as a chance to go anywhere, and start my new story. The diverse minds of Omega Mu Delta Kappa Epsilon helped shape who I am today. I’m incredibly grateful to the many friends I have made because of being a Deke. My experience at OSU was invaluable because of it.”

As I get more involved with DKE and move closer to graduation, these responses hold a tremendous amount of weight. DKE is more than a social club; it is a safe microcosm of life after college where our members are challenged and taken out of their comfort zones to truly learn more about the world. I wish the best to all of our graduates and thank them for helping to make Omega Mu what it is now.

As you have read, our young chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon is already providing tangible benefits to its members. In addition to the intangible bond that each of us has formed with one another, these benefits get us extremely excited about recruitment. This fall’s pledge class is comprised of 11 promising young gentlemen. We are excited to teach them about our valued Objects and the importance of gentlemanship, scholarship, and jolly good fellowship. Landon Botchlet, Jack Barnes, Chad Kenkel, Noah Ballew, Logan McMurdo DT Williams, Kolton Hall, Renn Oubre, Justin Gomez, Tyler Schmidt, and Aaron Wenger (pictured above, left to right) will be initiated in the coming weeks if they complete their pledgeship successfully and prove themselves to hold and value the objects of our fraternity. Pledge educator Philip Woods is working diligently to instruct them on the objects and core beliefs of Delta
