The playgroup would like to welcome the newly built nursery at Broad Haven school and hope many of you attended the open day to see the impressive new facilities.
Our playgroup, which has been open for some 45 years, has seen generations of children from the Havens and from further afield , pass through its doors. We have provided the first experience, for many, of a stimulating learning environment outside of the home.
Over the years Broad Haven Playgroup has continued to move along with education and requirements to try to provide an up to date service, this term is no exception.
We have prided ourselves in giving a quality and welcoming service to our community and this continues with our new hours and the ability to offer wrap around for those who wish to access the afternoon nursery sessions in the school.
This time has been one of great change for our playgroup, and we are keen to continue to provide that care and first foundation phase experience for all the children who join us.
Our numbers are currently low, and for this vital service to continue we need our playgroup to be attended and the resourc-es used.
If you are interested in your child starting playgroup or you believe you can support us in any other way e.g. Fundraising, committee member, please call the number or visit us.
Many thanks for your continued support!
Bonnie, Theresa, Sarah and all the playgroup team.

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT AND GARDENS
FREE to the first 3 callers, red and green Salad Bowl lettuce plants for growing this autumn/winter in a polytunnel or greenhouse.
Let me explain, last autumn I tried growing both green and red Salad Bowl, a cut and come again lettuce. They were a great success and kept us going right through winter and early spring this year.
I let one plant of each colour go to seed. They grew 6 feet tall (!) and produced seed that I planted end of August. They all germinated very well so I have spare plants! Give me a call if you would like some plants or seed. 07920050628
It has been an odd year for me at my allotment. I tried 6 different varieties of new potatoes and was not very impressed by any of them, Orla being the best, but not as good as International Kidney (Jersey Royal) or Maris Peer. An aspect of growing vegetables (for taste) is that you try to find varieties that do particularly well in your soil. I have carried out the same trials with runner beans and Lady Di is consistently the best flavour for my soil.
I have grown main crop Sarpo Mira, which is blight resistant and has almost no blight and the tubers are good. However my favourite maincrop potato for flavour and excellent storage is Pink Fir Apple. Blight has affected the latter and I am having to pick over the tubers as some are blight affected. I grow it because I love the flavour and it is rarely available in shops, I think because it is a very knobbly tuber and is best scrubbed and cooked with no attempt to peel before cooking.
At this time of year people's thoughts are often more on Christmas than they are an allotment plot, however work put in on preparing beds for planting now will be well rewarded next year. Included in the annual fee of £25 is as much manure as you need for your plot AND if you pay now you get next year free, now what could be better than that!
Good gardening, Patrick Hellings THCAG Treasurer.

MATTERS ARISINGTrafalgar Terrace Honesty Box Fund A draft application form for local fund raising groups wishing to apply for the donations from the Trafalgar Terrace Honesty Box Fund for the 12 months commencing 1 November 2015 was circulated for discussion. A notice has been placed in The Havens Diary and The Havens Facebook Page asking applicants to email the clerk for more information and a formElection of Vice Chair Cllr Dai Faulkner proposed Cllr Mary Whitewright and Cllr Lawrence Hughes seconded the proposal. Little Haven Litter Flyer A flyer has been produced for distribution to holiday homes in the Little Haven area advising visitors to check which week they can put their rubbish out for collection. The flyer also highlights Pembrokeshire County Council's rules for rubbish collections and the problems resulting in non compliance.AGENDA ITEMSDirection for Little Haven ConservationThe Direction for Little Haven Conservation was circulated to Councillors beginning of August. The order is a legal mechanism for withdrawing householders 'permitted development rights' to alter windows, doors, boundary walls and to create hard-standings. All householders will now have to apply for planning permission to make the alterations mentioned above. The Point Little Haven Councillors asked the clerk to include The Point in

asked the clerk to include The Point in future Grass Cutting Tenders as this is an important area used by both tourists and residents and no longer gets looked after by the National Trust Volunteers. The Havens Community Website Feedback Giles Howell, who has voluntarily produced the Havens Community Website for a number of years, requested that the Council review the site and give him some feedback on both the content and future development. Councillors appreciated the time he has put in over the years and asked the Clerk to thank him for all his hard work. It was suggested that, instead of listing the individual agendas and minutes, the site should provide a link to the PCC Community Council Website for access to agendas and minutes and also provide links to the Community and Diary Facebook pages. As Giles has an extensive collection of past agendas, minutes and diaries it was also suggested that there be a link on the site to enter an Archive area where these can all be accessed.Casual Vacancy The Clerk advised that she had informed the PCC Electoral Services Officer of the Casual Vacancy and published the required Casual Vacancy Notice in the Diary, on the Council Website and on the Council Facebook Page. As soon as Electoral Services advises whether the Council should fill the vacancy by election or co-option she will re-advertise for applications. Broad Haven Litter Update PCC have

How to attract them to your garden: Jays are relatively infrequent garden visitors, but may be tempted by peanuts and scraps. They are more likely to use your garden for storage of seeds. Aside from seeds they feed on carrion and eggs.
Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern).
BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that, at this time of year, one in ten partici-pants record Jays in their garden. In 2014 I saw a Jay during two weeks of the year, in 2013 it was ten weeks and so far this year it’s been six.
Make Your Garden Count! If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden, and want to help track their fortunes, then BTO Garden BirdWatch could be perfect for you. Please contact me for a free enquiry pack or to book a talk (Swansea and surrounding areas).

BIRD WATCH Welcome to this month’s Bird Watch. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in South Wales. Each month I introduce you to a bird or other animal that you might see in your garden.
Bird of the Month: JayAt this time of year there is generally plenty of natural food around. Birds only have themselves to care for – they have no dependants and, generally, no territories. Mixed-species flocks of birds can often be seen foraging together. You won’t see Jays among these as they prefer their own company – even established pairs spend much of their time apart. Jays are tree seed specialists with a passion for acorns. Although they favour woodlands, at this time of year you may spot them using your garden as an acorn larder, carefully burying their treasure in the lawn or borders. They find a different hiding place for every single seed! Birds can travel up to 2 ½ miles to find acorns, carrying up to nine in their bill and adapted gullet, although three is more usual. Part of the crow family, Jays have a pinkish-brown body and black tail; look out for the dazzling azure flash on their wings and bold white rump as they fly away. Jays are shy birds and tend to see you before you see them. To warn all other birds in the area they issue a loud, harsh screaming call. Did you know?
A Jay will stash up to 5,000 acorns during au-tumn. They have great memories but will inevi-tably forget the location of some, thus helping new oak trees to grow. Our Jays may be joined by cousins from north-ern and eastern Europe if those countries have a poor acorn crop. The Welsh name is Ys-grech y Coed, meaning Scream of the Wood.
How to attract them to your garden: Jays are relatively infrequent garden visitors, but may be tempted by peanuts and scraps. They are more likely to use your garden for storage of seeds. Aside from seeds they feed on carrion and eggs.
Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern).

Our September meeting was held at Broad Haven Village Hall, the guest speaker for the evening was Linda Harrison who gave us a very interesting and informative talk about The work of a Magistrate. Vote of thanks was given by Greta and hostesses were Jane and Linda.
On September 7th for our ""flagship" Centenary event our federation chartered the Waverley paddle steamer. Over 500 WI members and friends had a wonderful afternoon sailing around St Brides Bay. Guiding News October; 2015
Brownies restarted on Wednesday 16th September with a new time and new leaders. Nine girls enjoyed the evening, meet-ing the new leaders and deciding on their new Brownie names. (Squirrel and Deer are the new leaders; Badger and Hedgehog are helping them out this term).
Lots of activities are planned including shoulder bag decorating, badge work, pavement chalking, art workshop and of course learning some new songs plus an opportunity to spend some time at a Pack Holiday.
It is still hoped that Rainbows will restart, keep your eyes open for details (existing rainbows will be contacted by email or text as soon as possible).
Guides will be meeting regularly during this term and will be contacted directly by Dolphin.
Rugby World Cup - On Monday 14th September a signed World Cup Rugby Ball (and banner) were hosted by Pembrokeshire Guiding at Tasker Millward School as part of its journey around Wales. The banner and ball travelled 1000 miles around Wales within 7 days and arrived safely back in Cardiff. The Banner looked wonderful with over 3000 colourful signatures and many personal messages for the Welsh Squad. The final stop for the Banner was when a dozen Guiding members took it to the The Vale Hotel Hensol for the Welsh Squad to see all the good luck messages before they left for their first game. The well-travelled ball looked as good as the day it left and will be part of a Rugby
Exhibition at The National Museum of Wales from Monday 21st September until November 2015. Throughout the last 7 days, the photographs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have been absolutely super and each telling a story of so many members of Girlguiding laughing and having fun. This really is a fantastic organisation to be part of

QUIZ : ANSWERS1.' Red'; When asked originally the band’s name Mick said “Red, simply red’ and the name stuck. Red after the colour of Mick’s hair. 2. 2%; 12% of Welsh people have red hair. It is a recessive gene possessed by 40% of the Welsh and both parents need it to produce a red headed child. 3. They all have natural red hair. 4. ‘Start’ is Old English for ‘tail’, from this came ‘stark’ and ‘stark naked’ means with the rump exposed! ‘Poll’ is Middle English for head, hence ‘poll tax’ or ‘pollarded’. The Red Kite was all but extinct in Wales but there are now 1,000 breeding pairs. 50 may be seen together at the feeding centre at Llanddeusant, (Brecon Beacons). 5. Ramsey Island. 6. A 1990 film from Tom Clancy’s book starring Sean Connery featured a Soviet nuclear submarine ‘Red October’ threatening the USA. 7. In the estuary to Dublin’s River Liffey lies an island, 1 mile long, ½ mile wide where in 1945 were discovered these colonies of ‘monster’ red ants looking just like jig-saws or mosaics, being made up of small fragments of male and female tissue, all jumbled together. This cannot be due to genetic chance because the black ant colonies are the same and radiation studies were negative. No-one can explain this mystery. Their bite contains formic acid (Formica: Latin: Ant) 8. Anglesey, Clocae-nog (North Wales), Tywi Valley in the Cambrian Mountains, Mid Wales where the genotype is the purest in Britain. The Monks on Caldy hope to introduce the red squirrel there.
