Historical Colors

Today if you are planning to paint your house or finger paint with your kids you simply take a trip to the store for supplies. But ever wonder how colors came about in prehistoric cave paintings or why in the Middle Ages a painting with a lot of blue would show how rich you are? The comic "Mummy Brown and Other Historical Colors" by Korwin Briggs digs into not only what historical colors were used for but what made them deadly. Here are some of the more interesting colors.

Umber (Prehistory) Cave paintings done with this color were

made from dirt.

Orpiment (Ancient Egypt) Although this

was one of the bright-est yellows it was also

very toxic (being that it contained arsenic).

Lead White (Ancient Greece) While this paint was durable and bright it was also extremely toxic.

Tyrian Purple (Ancient Rome) Strictly only worn by the emperor, ground snail shells created this purple.

Ultramarine (Middle Ages) Made from crushed Lapis Lazuli, this was a very expensive pigment. If you wanted to know how rich someone was, all you had to do is see how much blue was in the paintings they commissioned.

Carmine (Renaissance) If you needed this deep red dye all you had to do was boil some beetles.

This deep red color is still used today to make food redder-not sure if it’s still made from beetles.

Mummy Brown (Early Modern) Just like its name this color was made from Egyptian mummies-Eww! Although it was great for painting flesh-tones, people stopped making it because artists started to realize what their paint was made of (and mummies were getting harder to find).

Scheele's Green (Industrial Revolution) This color from the 19th century was highly loved until it started killing people. Full of

arsenic, it released toxic particles and vapors into the air.

Anise Blue (Industrial Revolution) Some colors come about by accident. This blue color came about when workers messed

up making Magenta.

With a purpose of catching splatters and splashes from the sink and cooktop, backsplashes follow one rule–they can easily be wiped down. Other than that, there are no rules! A unique backsplash is a creative way to add your personal style and touch to your home.

There is no reason the backsplash needs to stay between the countertop and the bottom of the wall cabinets, and behind the cooktop up to the vent. Extending the material all the way up the wall will not only be eye catching, but kitchens with low ceil-ings will give the impression of more height.

Subway tiles–a classic choice–are known for their clean lines and flexibility. Available in many materials and colors, subway tiles can be laid out in the traditional “running bond," chevron pat-tern, or neatly stacked, allowing you to customize the look.

Bring the kitchen together and choose a backsplash out of the same material or color as the countertop. Have a leftover piece of stone slab such as marble or granite? Leave the top edge natural or broken off and construct an organic-looking backsplash.

Pebbles, leather, wood strips, broken pottery, and pennies (see image at right) are all non-traditional materials that make an original backsplash. Make sure if you are using a non-traditional material that you seal and caulk correctly.

Cabinets aren’t just for the kitchen and bathroom anymore. There are many opportunities to utilize custom cabinetry throughout your home.

Laundry Room: Extra linens and cleaning supplies are often stored in the laundry room. By adding cabinets these items will have their own space and be easily found next time you need to use them. Make life even easier by adding a utility sink to the laundry room—no more carrying wet clothes around trying to prewash muddy uniforms or get stains out of your favorite outfit.

Mudroom: Tired of tripping over shoes and coats whenever you leave? Have cubbies installed in your mudroom or entryway. These nooks will be helpful in making sure everyone has their own space to put their coats and shoes when they get home.

Craft Room: A room with drawers, shelves, and peg boards is a serious crafter's dream! Finding what you need for a particular project is easy when custom cabinets are installed that match your storage needs.

Entertainment Room: Being a focal point in any house, the entertainment room is a perfect place for personalized cabinets. Not only can you create an entertainment center that fits your space and storage needs, but you can make sure it flows well with the other cabinets and furniture in your home.

Create An Elegant Bathroom Sick and tired of your outdated bathroom? Revital-ize your old lavatory by adding an elegant twist with a vintage tub, custom cabinets and new room décor.

With its deep sides and elaborate feet, clawfoot tubs will give a classy, polished look to your space. Keep essential soaps and candles nearby on a small stool or table to enjoy during your relaxing soak.

Not only will vanity cabinets enhance the appear-ance of your bathroom, but they are crucial for storing bathroom products you don’t want sitting on your sink. Choosing rustic alder or maple for your cabinet design will allow for a more traditional feel.

Updated room décor is a great way to round out the overall look of your elegant bathroom. Mono-grammed towels, small bouquets of fresh flowers and stylish wall art are all easy additions to help you achieve an elegant new space.
