Dear Friends,

One of the places we visited this Summer was the picturesque town of Honfleur in Normandy. As we walked along the quayside it seemed like we had been here before. It occurred to me that it was just the sort of picture you would find on a jigsaw puzzle, perhaps that’s where we’d seen it. Pretty seaside towns make good puzzle pictures and if you get stuck with that tricky shaped bit of sky or sea you can always refer to the picture on the box.Life can be a bit like collecting pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and building them into a completed picture. However, we don’t have the benefit of knowing what it will look like when it is finished and have to allow God to build each of our lives into a coherent picture. Of course we don’t hold the finished article so it doesn’t always make sense and we have to trust that the picture is beginning to form. When we’re looking for the next piece, the piece we were sure would fit doesn’t always turn out to be the right one, and the piece we had discarded may be the one we’re looking for.Finding guidance on any next step is a bit like this; a new job, a new place to call home, any next step for that matter. God can use us in whatever walk of life we find ourselves. He can use even the dark pieces to build the complete picture. The prophet Jeremiah (29.11) says “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”I have been a curate here in the Maghull and Melling Team for over three years and over the summer we began to explore our next step. As a result, we will be moving on to the parish of St Ann’s Rainhill to be their new vicar. My last Sunday here will be on 2nd November and I will be licenced there on 23rd of November at 2:30pm and it would be great to see you there if you could make it. This is the next part of the picture for us and as we move on, we will all appreciate your prayers. My prayer for you is that you would know where God is leading you and trust that he has good plans for you.Au revoirAlan

Ready to get your feet wet?Martin spoke to us recently at Keystone and challenged us to be more like Peter and step out of the boat. (Matt ), to engage with Jesus and take up the challenge laid down to us all. We need to act to help our church grow, not just St Andrew’s Maghull, but, as Martin said, the whole of the Church of England. So what is your challenge? Have you opened your heart to listen to Jesus to accept his challenge and indeed his help to fulfil that challenge? Are to tee-tering on the edge of making a decision, maybe not a monumental one, no is expecting you perform a back flip dive off the edge of the boat, but maybe you dip you toes in, take on a role within our church. There are many to choose from, you could join a prayer group, Bible Study, become a sidesperson, read the lesson at a service. Not all jobs involve being the “star of the show” if you are uncomfortable with being in the limelight. There are so many supporting roles that you could un-dertake, all so valuable. On very important task which we can all undertake is prayer. Pray for guidance, strength to change what needs changing, courage to leave what does not and faith to follow the path we are being led along. So go on, step out of the boat, get your feet wet. And remember, those who cannot swim, Jesus is always there to catch you.

ERRANT VICAR: From AlanOne Sunday, a vicar felt he couldn't face conducting the morning service. He phoned his churchwardens, and said he was sick. Then he drove 50 miles to a course where no-one would know him and played golf. Peter brought this to the Lord's at-tention. "He will be punished," said the Lord. The errant vicar then proceeded to get a hole in one, not once, but twice. "I thought you said he will be punished," Peter said to the Lord. He replied, "Oh, he will suffer—who is he going to be able to tell?"

(Thanks to Brian Shersby for this one)

AUTUMNAutumn is one of the four temperate seasons, it marks the transition from summer into winter. In September, when the arrival of night comes noticeably earlier and the temperature cools considerably. One of its main features is the shedding of leaves from deciduous trees as they pave way for further growth. The leaves on some trees begin to change colour, red, orange, and gold colours giving us a wonderful display as the trees prepare for winter then new growth in the spring. This is the wonder of nature in action.Sometimes our faith is like a tree, Strong, powerful and glorious, however sometimes we can withdraw and wait for the lighter nights and the warm weather so we can spring back to life. Why wait for spring? Let Jesus into your life every day, feel the renewing power of the Holy Spirit as he refreshes and recharges us every day.So like a tree sheds leaves to allow new growth, let us shed all our old ways and habits and let Jesus renew and refresh through the power of the Holy Spirit.Be willing to soak up some light and bask in God’s Word, allowing it to expose, correct and heal Leave the darkness behind and bask in the glorious light of the Lord."Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

This is the power of the Lord in action.Phil Simpkin

THE BRICKA young and successful executive was travelling down a neighbourhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down, when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, 'What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?' The young boy was apologetic. 'Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do,' He pleaded. 'I threw the brick because no one else would stop...' With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. 'It's my brother, 'he said 'He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.'

Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, 'Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me.' Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. 'Thank you and may God bless you,' the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy!push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home.

It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: 'Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!' God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not.

Thought for the Day:If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.He sends you flowers every spring. He sends you a sunrise every morning Face it, friend - He is crazy about you!

an elderly couple had just learned how to send text messages on their mobile phones. the wife was a romantic type and the husband was more of a no-nonsense guy.

one afternoon the wife went out to meet a friend for coffee. as she waited for her friend, she decided to send her husband a romantic text message and she wrote:

"if you are sleeping, send me your dreams. if you are laughing, send me your smile. if you are eating, send me a bite. if you are drinking, send me a sip. if you are crying, send me your tears. i love you." the husband texted back to her: "i'm on the toilet. Please advise."
