SPEAKING OUT FOR GREATER DANDENONG The City of Greater Dandenong has

joined forces with the Municipal Association of Victoria and other local governments to lobby political parties in the lead-up to next month’s state election.

Council is calling on all political parties to commit to action on key local issues for Greater Dandenong that impact on local residents, support services, the local economy, public transport and much more.

Lyndhurst landfill: Council is calling on parties and candidates to commit to closing the site and, until this required outcome is achieved, that

further actions be taken immediately to minimise any environmental impact.

Level crossing removals: Calls to remove all five remaining level crossings in Greater Dandenong, with the Abbotts Road crossing a top priority.

Buses: Calls for improved integrated bus services to assist workers in the Dandenong South industrial area and families in the new estates in Keysborough South to have better access to improved public transport services.

Funding squeeze: Pressure is growing on local government due to cost shifting from the state and federal governments

– which has impacted on key community services including libraries, kindergartens and maternal and child health services – reductions in grants and a proposal to cap Council rates.

New arrivals: Extra funding is needed to help local agencies deal with growing demands for help from newly arrived migrants.

Key social issues: Council is calling for a cap on the number of gaming machines in our community, plus extra funding to address the impacts of family violence and alcohol abuse on our community.

Youth skills and employment: Council is calling for increased TAFE funding to help support training for local young people to better prepare them for employment.

Local economy: Calls for greater funding, support and initiatives to support our local industry.

LET’S PUT ON A

SHOW!It’s time to break out the fairy floss, jump on a

ride and celebrate country life at the 143rd annual Dandenong Show.

Mark your calendars for next month’s key community event featuring plenty of farmyard animals, free children’s entertainment area, motorbike stunt riding, fireworks, classic cars and a whole lot more!

The Dandenong Show is on Saturday 8 November and Sunday 9 November at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street Dandenong.

Cr John KellyI am very pleased at the outcome of works that Council has

done at Lois Twohig Reserve in Dandenong North.

The old bitumen road, which was a link to McFees Road, has been removed and replaced with a walking path to improve pedestrian access within the reserve.

Extra seating and mature trees have also been added around the Number 2 Oval to provide shady spots to sit for not only spectators of the sports that are played there, but also for the many residents who use the park for exercising and walking.

Drainage systems in the reserve have also been upgraded.

The cricket wicket on the Number 2 Oval has been repositioned further away from the residential boundary fence to reduce the chance of balls going over the fence and landing in residential properties.

During this financial year Council will also be adding a new higher perimeter protection fence along a portion of this boundary.

I believe this is a win-win situation for both the residents – whose properties are on the boundary of the oval – and for the sporting clubs that use the oval.

This allows us to meet the needs of our residents while also encouraging our community to live healthy, active lives.

The new Council office and regional library has been opened for six months now and I am pleased that they are both well-utilised – especially the library which has seen more people using the library than ever before thanks to this impressive facility.

I encourage residents who have not visited the library yet to come along. You will be pleasantly surprised at not only the range of books available but also the many computers and screens for work-related issues and recreational use, like watching sport on the screens and playing games.

I had the pleasure of meeting with the students, staff and parents of Rosswood Preschool in Dandenong

North recently.

This much-loved community facility is gaining a new lease of life thanks to the dedicated committee of parent volunteers.

The team, led by president Susie Beale, has committed the next two years to improving the pre-school.

Council is pleased to partner with them and is investing significant funds in this year’s Budget to rejuvenate the facility. I’m hoping further funds can also be dedicated in next year’s Budget.

The City of Greater Dandenong is proud to invest in improved early learning opportunities for children in our community.

These works will allow more children to receive a vital head start in the year before they begin formal schooling – which has been shown to improve learning outcomes in later years.

We strongly acknowledge the vital role that kindergarten plays in the learning and development of children.

By providing quality kindergarten services we can ensure our young people are given the best possible start to their education and have a smooth transition to school life.

Rosswood Playgroup is another fantastic local group serving our community thanks to the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers.

Rosswood Playgroup welcomes families of all backgrounds and family structures to join them in a safe environment.

They offer both children and families the chance to build friendships. While the children play parents can join together in a non-judgmental, supportive and collaborative environment.

There are vacancies available at both the pre-school (ph: 9795 6010) and the playgroup (ph: 9701 1411), so why not join in these fantastic community groups.

C arer’s Week will be celebrated in Greater Dandenong from

12 to 18 October.

On Wednesday 15 October Council is celebrating Carer’s Week by hosting a three-course lunch for carers in the civic square from 10am to 2pm.

This event is an opportunity to acknowledge the great contribution our carers make to our community and raise awareness around the important role carers play and the support services available to them.

Not only does this provide an opportunity for carers to come together and share their experiences but Council will also be providing entertainment and information stalls.

This event is free for carers and those they care for, with free parking available.

Mayor Jim Memeti said Council was keen to support carers in whatever way it could. He said the City of Greater Dandenong had more than 300 carers – all of whom dedicated their lives to caring for others.

“Carers play an important role. They know the person they are caring for better than anyone else and can be an invaluable source of information and support,” Cr Memeti said.

To RSVP for the free carers lunch on October 15 please contact 8571 5502.

working FOR YOU

ACCESSIBLE FACILITIES ENSURE COMFORT FOR ALL

The City of Greater Dandenong is committed to being an accessible

and inclusive community for people of all abilities and backgrounds.

This includes ensuring everyone has access to safe and clean toilet and change room facilities when they are out and about in our municipality.

The recent redevelopment of the Dandenong Civic Centre included construction of new bright and modern amenities, which have sparked plenty of positive feedback from our community.

The Civic Centre facilities now include two toilets, a shower, adult-sized height-adjustable change table, height-

adjustable basins and a tracking hoist system for comfortable transfer.

Written instructions are provided inside the toilet facilities for those who need them.

Council’s Quality & Inclusion Team Leader Tania Bernardo said providing these facilities would

improve people’s quality of life, allowing them and their carers to stay out for longer and participate in more activities – which is great news for residents and visitors alike.

Accessible toilet facilities (with varying equipment) are also available at:

• Springers Leisure Centre – 400 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough

• Dandenong basketball stadium – 270 Stud Rd, Dandenong

• Noble Park Aquatic Centre – 9 Memorial Dr, Noble Park

• Norman Luth Reserve – Heritage Drive Springvale

• Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, 18-34 Buckley St, Noble Park.

Residents in Greater Dandenong will be asked to put their walking

shoes on this month for WalkFest – an all-ability all-ages event Council runs to promote healthy living in our community.

Three accessible walks will be held around Dandenong on Friday 31 October.

Each will be a different distance to suit people of varying fitness levels.

All walks finish at Hemmings Park with a free community event featuring live entertainment from talented local performers, food, face painting and sport and recreational activities.

This free community event will run until 2.30pm.

Whether you need to register your dog, pay your rates or ask a question about local services our customer service officers will be able to help.

The Noble Park Customer Service Centre is located inside the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre at 18-34 Buckley Street Noble Park. Opening hours are 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.

Payments can be made via credit card, EFTPOS or cheque – however please note that we are unable to take cash at this site.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARDLocal primary school students will

be walking to and from school more often, as part of VicHealth’s Walk to School month in October.

Council is supporting local primary schools, including Dandenong West Primary (pictured above), to get involved in this fun and easy initiative.

Walking provides plenty of benefits for children including improving fitness, friendships, their confidence and the environment.

Yet the number of Victorian children walking to school has declined dramatically in recent decades and obesity levels are on the rise.

With some great prizes up for grabs, and plenty of fun competitions for students during October, Walk to School is a fun way to help kids get the 60 minutes of exercise they need each day.

More information is available at www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au or you can check out Council’s ‘Walk to School’ video at www.greaterdandenong.com

During the month of October Council will be hosting Safe City

Day at Dandenong Railway Station to celebrate Community Safety Month.

The event will be held on Friday, 17 October from 7.30am to 9.30am.

Council will join forces with Victoria Police, Transit Police, Metro, Neighbourhood Watch and Dandenong Rotary as part of the Safe City Day.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said Dandenong Railway Station was a major commuter hub for people travelling to and from the City of Greater Dandenong.

“The focus of the Safe City Day is to engage with railway precinct users, provide information on a range of community safety measures, as well as broader messages around health and wellbeing.

“It is also an opportunity to improve perceptions about Dandenong Railway Station by supporting a range of place activation initiatives, as well as a chance to get direct feedback from people that use the railway precinct.”

Dandenong Market’s Kitchen chef Russell Bald will also be on hand to cook a healthy morning tea for commuters to sample while Dandenong Rotary will provide free tea and coffee.

Community safety month is celebrated this month. It is a chance for the whole community to reflect on what role they can play in making our city safer.

T he Garage Sale Trail is coming to Greater Dandenong and local

residents, schools and community groups are invited to get involved.

Join thousands of households across Australia and hold your own garage sale on Saturday 25 October.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said 2014 marked the first year the City of Greater Dandenong would take part in this fantastic community initiative.

“The Garage Sale Trail provides a unique opportunity for local residents and organisations to repurpose their unwanted belongings, live in a more sustainable way by reducing waste, connect with their local community and raise money for themselves or others,” Cr Memeti said.

Since the Garage Sale Trail was launched four years ago it has attracted 10,000 garage sales each year and has made households an average of $270.

To register a sale for free – or see what other garage sales are planned for your area – go to www.garagesaletrail.com.au

Council’s own Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens will be joining in the fun with its own Garage Sale Trail event.

Join us to pick up some bargains, or host your own stall, 11am-3pm Saturday 25 October.

If you are interested in having your own stall at Heritage Hill, please contact 9793 4511.

TACKLING DUMPED RUBBISHAs Greater Dandenong residents know, our city is a positive, enjoyable place to live, work and visit. We rely on your help to keep it this way, especially when it comes to keeping our neighbourhoods and streets neat, clean and free from dumped rubbish.

Dumped rubbish is becoming an increasing problem for councils across Victoria.

Mattresses piled up on vacant blocks, loads of building rubble left on the side of the roads, or stacks of rubbish left on nature strips after someone moves house are just a few examples of the many complaints Council receives throughout the year.

During 2013–2014 reports of dumped rubbish have skyrocketed with 3064 complaints received compared to 2282 complaints in 2011–2012 and only 771 complaints in 2009–2010.

Dumped rubbish is not only unsightly, but also poses a number of safety hazards. Council is serious about taking action to prevent dumping and deal with offenders.

Council has implemented a range of measures to prevent, detect and investigate dumping.

Local laws officers are maintaining a visible presence throughout the city, providing information, education and encouragement for people to do the right thing. Portable surveillance cameras are also being deployed to capture evidence of illegal dumping, particularly at well-known ‘hot spots’.

People who dump rubbish face penalties which exceed $5000. Don’t risk a fine – dispose of your rubbish the right way.

There are many ways to legally dispose of your unwanted items:

• Council offers residents one free ‘at call’ hard waste collection service each year and extra collections are available for a reasonable fee. To organise a collection, phone 9721 1915.

• Local charity stores accept donations of unwanted items in good condition during business hours.

• Waste transfer stations – such as Outlook Environmental (274 Hallam Road, Hampton Park) – often accept items that can be recycled or re-used, at no charge.

October marks the 25th anniversary of Greater Dandenong’s Interfaith

Network.

To mark the milestone, faith and community leaders will come together at the network’s Annual Gathering to renew their commitment to promoting peace and harmony with the theme of ‘celebration’ in mind.

Established in 1989 as the first in Australia, the network has worked closely with the community to promote respect, harmony, faith and spiritual diversity in our community.

Over the years it has organised many successful events and initiatives to

engage in interfaith and intercultural conversations between members of the Aboriginal, Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish and Sikh faiths and the spiritual organisations of Sathya Sai and Brahma Kumaris.

The Interfaith Network’s Annual Gathering is on Wednesday 22 October at the Drum Theatre and interested members of the public are warmly invited to attend.

Places are limited and bookings are required.

For further information phone Agnes Kean on 9546 5162.

CELEBRATING FAITHS

The Interfaith Network has much to celebrate.

T he City of Greater Dandenong is hosting a youth film festival to raise

awareness about mental health issues and how they impact on young people in our community.

The film festival Self(y) mental health starts with me will be held during Mental Health Week.

Council’s youth services team is leading the project and is encouraging young people from across Greater Dandenong to be involved.

Youth and Family Services Coordinator Katharina Verscharen said Council recognised the importance of educating young people and

encouraging them to take an active role in caring for their mental health.

She said a Youth Needs Analysis conducted by the City of Greater Dandenong in 2012-13 identified mental health as the main area of concern for young people.

“This innovative project involves young people from both secondary schools and the wider municipality and aims to increase mental health literacy,” she said.

“It also promotes help-seeking behaviour among young people through the creative medium of film.”

Young people have been asked to create a short film depicting positive mental health based around the theme “mental health starts with me.”

All films must also include information about where young people can go if they need support and be filmed in the City of Greater Dandenong.

The Self(y) Film Festival will be held on Thursday 9 October at the new civic square, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. All films will be shown on the big screen.

TAKE A SELFY ON MENTAL HEALTH

HAVE YOUR SAY Council wants to create a

healthier and more sustainable environment for our community. Residents and businesses all have an important role to play in shaping the Environment Plan. Your input will help shape the new Greater Dandenong Environment Plan.

We rely on the environment for our air, water, food and fuel. Using our environmental resources sustainably can save money and time, as well as ensuring that we all have a great place to live, work and relax both now and in the future. We have recently consulted on our Draft Green Wedge Management Plan, and now Council wants to know what you think about matters that affect the environment including travel and transport, waste and recycling, parks, plants, animals and new ‘green’ buildings.

Have your say by finding out more at www.greaterdandenong.com emailing [email protected] or phoning 8571 1000.

business NEWS

Greater Dandenong is home to a host of transport manufacturers

that are keeping our country moving.

Although facing tough market conditions, transport-related companies around Greater Dandenong continue to flourish.

Here are just a few examples:

The State Government is spending an extra $17m on VLocity trains on top of its existing order of 40 new carriages with Dandenong train manufacturer Bombardier, as announced by Premier Denis Napthine in late March.

Keysborough-based TriMas is now one of the world’s largest suppliers of engineered towing and occupant protection solutions for the motor vehicle industry.

It has recently expanded into Europe, China and South Africa in addition to Thailand and New Zealand.

Vawdrey, Australia’s largest independent truck trailer builder, is investing in a new purpose-built panel plant and warehouse in Dandenong.

IVECO Trucks Australia employs over 290 people from more than 20 different nationalities and produces 1,200 trucks from its Dandenong plant every year.

Jayco caravanning company has a purpose-built 60,000m2 undercover manufacturing complex in Dandenong South where all Jayco RVs are made – with a new RV rolling off the line every 12 minutes.

TransGlaze, a local specialist supplier

of mass transit glazing systems, now employs 18 staff in Dandenong and exports to the USA, China, Austria, Czech Republic, Fiji and Malaysia.

Bar Crusher, which manufactures innovative plate aluminium boats in Dandenong South, recently introduced a new series of custom-designed alloy trailers 150kg lighter than the average tow weight on larger models.

Also keeping people moving is unique and local manufacturer of tailor made wheelchairs, Magic Mobility.

So with trains, trams, trucks, boats, wheelchairs and their many components still being manufactured here in Greater Dandenong, the future looks set to stay ‘on the move’.

Local artists are being invited to enter their work in the ninth annual Noble

Park Community Centre Art Show, to be held this month.

The Art Show is a great chance for both emerging and established artists to exhibit their work to the public in a professional, but supportive, setting.

Organisers hope that this celebration of community art will also encourage first time exhibitors – young or old – to share their work.

A range of prizes and awards is on offer, including the first open prize of $500 cash, a runner up prize of $250, a first junior prize of $150 cash and $100 cash prize for the first junior runner up.

The exhibition will be held on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October from 10am-4pm. Entry for each artwork is $5 and patrons are asked to make a gold coin donation upon entry, which will go towards the running costs of this non-profit community event.
