President Jon Bednarski

After a relaxing overnight stop on the Columbia River, Syl-

via and I headed northeast toward Spokane, Washington. We

passed through the beautiful town of Coeur d’alene, Idaho

and into the state of Montana. Just north of Missoula, we

stopped at Madden’s Mountain Galloway Ranch in Ronan,

MT. Montana has seven

members and 13 registered

cattle.

New to cattle and Belties,

we met Ted and Carol Mad-

den (left) at their ranch lo-

cated just outside of

town. Ted is an elementary

school principal and Carol is

an elementary school teach-

er. The Maddens recently moved into their home that they

built by themselves. They were also finishing their fences on

their rolling 10 acres. Ted and Carol have use of an adjoining

120 acres which they were just starting to hay. The magnifi-

cent view of the mountains behind them would make you

want to stay there forever. Along with their four horses, they

have a small herd of Belties, which they acquired in 2012

from Candy Brown (CA).

Their excitement for the breed, and their new calves, re-

minded me of when we started our herd. With their smaller

acreage, the Maddens have decided to forgo buying a bull

and will artificially breed their cows. It’s fun for me to meet

new members who are jumping into farming with both feet,

learning as they go, and seeking help from other local men-

tors. Ted and Carol thanks for being Beltie members!

South Dakota – The Mount Rushmore State

A trip to Mount Rushmore and The Badlands would not be

complete without a visit to Gayle Cerullo and Leroy Kin-

dler’s ranch in Newell, SD. South Dakota has five members

and 16 registered cattle. We saw beautiful, rolling green

grassland. If we didn’t know better we easily could have

been fooled, because they typically experience hot, dry sum-

ing Belties in 1998

when she lived on

She has been a real

Nominations for Council

OCTOBER 2013

The following candidates have been selected by the Nominating Committee to serve on the Council of the Belted Galloway Society, Inc. Council members work on a volunteer basis and we are very thank-ful for their readiness to volunteer. Regular and Lifetime members are eligible to vote, either by mail prior to the deadline set forth on the ballot, or in person at the Annu-al General Meeting. Each membership number is allowed one (1) vote. A ballot is provided below. Jane Hemmer lives in north Georgia on White Sulphur Farm with her husband, John, a local orthopedic surgeon. Their son, Lee and his family, also call White Sulphur Farm home. Daughter Mary, and her family, reside locally in Toccoa, Georgia. The family-run farm has been in Jane's family for 200 years. Besides their Belted Gallo-

way cattle, the Hemmers also are hosts to other livestock, including Tamworth pigs, Plantation Tennessee Walkers, miniature horses, chickens and peacocks. Jane and John have raised Belties since 1998. Through accurate record keeping and a selective genetic pro-gram, the family is proud to offer a quality product. She is the presi-dent of White Sulphur Properties, Inc., a property management com-pany, and she is a former Hall County Commissioner and Georgia State Senator. Jane is also a sculptor and certified forensic artist. Her sculptures are featured in art exhibits and galleries throughout the area. In addition, she assists with identification for law enforcement and teaches forensic art. Other pursuits include Hemhocks, LLC, a family endeavor which produces a barbeque sauce called "Janie's Cherry Jam", and on occasion the company cooks for charity in Gainesville. Jane's greatest pride and joy are her six grandchildren, over whom you will generally find her doting. Jane is delighted to be joining the board of the Belted Galloway Society Inc. Greg Hipple and his wife Pat own Sutliff Belties, of Solon, Iowa which is located at the west end of the Historic Sutliff Bridge in Eastern Iowa. Sutliff Belties is a family farming operation consisting of 350 acres of row crops and hay ground, along with a herd of Belt-ed Galloway cattle, and a commercial cow herd. Foundation stock for the Belted Galloway herd is from a few of the oldest herds in the Midwest. The first Beltie was a gift for Pat, which fulfilled a lifelong wish to have some of those “someday”. Greg has just completed two terms as a Director with the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Associa-tion, four of those serving as Secretary. He has served one term as a member of Council, and currently serves as Treasurer. Greg also serves on the Sale & Show and Scholarship Committees. To support his “farming habit” Greg has served 27 years with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, in Iowa City, Iowa. He is an Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Radar/Lidar Instructor, D.A.R.E. Instructor, Hostage Negotiator, currently working in the Patrol Division. Greg

and Pat have two grown children, Janeen and Gary, and are expect-ing their first grandchild this fall. Brice Jackson has just finished his first term on Council, and has been active on the Show & Sale and Promotions Committees. Brice is Chairman of the Belted Galloway Junior Association which was newly named in 2012 and formerly called the Belted Galloway Youth Group. Brice graduated from Purdue University with a de-gree in animal sciences, focusing on animal health, genetics and nutrition. For several years, he was an animal health consultant for Anchor Laboratories, and later he founded a veterinary farm supply company that distributed vet supplies and customized minerals for individual farms. He also served as the information systems manager for Lear Automotive. Brice and his family have raised cattle since he was a youngster, first Polled Herefords and later Simmentals, show-ing nationally for many years. The Jacksons own B&J Cattle Com-

pany and live on a farm 30 miles west of Indianapolis, near Green-castle, Indiana. They currently run a herd of 100+ Belted Galloways. They, with the help of their son Jeff, raise and sell Belted Galloway and Simmental cattle, offer hoof trimming services, and sell show supplies breeding semen and specialty feeds. Over the years, Brice has been active in his community, coaching, mentoring youngsters, and promoting cattle in the 4-H program. He is committed both to promoting Beltie cattle and also to working with Belted Galloway breeders to increase awareness and enthusiasm for the breed. Brice has been collecting inputs and information about the benefits of us-ing Belted Galloway cattle in main stream cattle and show cattle operations, and has been a proponent of bringing Appendix Belted Galloways back into the show arena in Louisville to emphasize these benefits. Chuck Neely has spent close to twenty years juggling his sales ca-reer in information technology along with his love for farming and the outdoors. Chuck, and his wife Lou Ann, started raising commer-cial cattle and sheep in 1996 on their Highland County, Virginia mountain farm. After reading the works of Wendell Berry and books by Allan Nation and Joel Salatin, Chuck knew this type of farming was going to be a family business and second career. After considerable research on old world grass genetics and cattle, Chuck and Lou Ann bought their first Belties four years ago and have not looked back. They now own and operate Riven Rock Farm, a grow-ing, 600-acre, holistic farm that features heritage breed, 100% grass-fed Galloway beef and Katahdin lamb. They manage a growing herd of registered and commercial Belties, along with American Gallo-ways and Katahdin sheep. Their son Matt, a recent James Madison University graduate, still plays farm hand part-time. Chuck serves on the Economic Development Authority board in Highland County. Chuck has also served on the Shenandoah Valley Partnership board, an economic development alliance for several counties in western Virginia.

Ballot VOTE FOR FOUR (4) candidates for 2-year terms on the Belted Galloway Society’s Council. Additional names may be written in if you wish. The Ballot (or a clear photocopy) must be mailed to the office postmarked November 8 or earlier in an envelope marked “Ballot,” may be faxed by November 8, or submitted at the Annual General Meeting.

Jon Bednarski, Annual Meeting Committee Chairman

The excitement is building for all the events

planned for the National Belted Galloway Show,

The Belted Galloway Premium Sale and the Annu-

al General Meeting.

The meeting and banquet will be held at The Hilton Garden Inn

Louisville Airport, 2735 Crittenden Drive, Louisville, KY. The hotel

is located just a short walk from Broadbent Arena where the Nation-

al Belted Galloway Show is held and approximately one mile from

the Louisville International Airport. Complimentary shuttle service

to and from the airport is available. That same shuttle can transport

members to and from Broadbent Arena when available and at no

cost.

We currently have 35 rooms blocked for three nights at the Hilton

Garden Inn: Monday, November 18 through Wednesday, November

20, 2013 The rooms are $159 per night after October 19, 2013. We

also have six rooms available for any early arrivals on Sunday, No-

vember 17.

For reservations please call (502) 637-2424 or go to our website

www.beltie.org for the link to make reservations online. Ask for the

code BGS. Discounted rates were offered through October 19.

Many of the folks attending our event in 2012 asked us to find a

hotel that was close to the fairgrounds and had facilities for our

meeting, dinner and socializing. We listened! It is our hope that the

membership will support attending the venue and the event.

The Annual General Meeting and Banquet will be held at the hotel

on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 7-10 p.m. A cash bar will

open at 7 p.m. and the buffet will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The cost for the dinner buffet is $35 for adults and $15 for kids

under 12. Please complete the reservation form below or call or

email Executive Director Vic Eggleston, with your dinner reserva-

tions. Contact Vic at (608) 220-1091 or executivedirec-

[email protected]. We now accept Master Card and Visa.

On behalf of the Society and the Officers and Council, we look

forward to a great event!

Montana — The Mount Rushmore State

breeder, and she moved the ma-

jority of her herd to South Dako-

ta. Gayle served on Council for

four years. She has always been

passionate about the Belted Gal-

loway youth program and has

participated in many shows and

events. Gayle still gets excited

about showing her animals! Dur-

ing 2012, Gayle and Leroy made

the long trek to the NAILE in

Louisville, KY to show their ani-

mals and support our breed.

As we toured the ranch of 180

acres of owned property, and an additional 80 acres of leased

ground, it was easy to see how much they enjoy their cat-

tle. They each have their own flock of sheep which total

about 40 head. In their region, snow can arrive as early as

September. The couple’s single cut-

ting of hay will be all they have to

feed in the winter months unless they

irrigate the land during the summer.

Gayle and Leroy feel that for the

Belted Galloway breed to expand in

the western states there is a need for

better trucking and communication

between breeders. In a previous is-

sue, I addressed the need for options

regarding trucking and long-haul

transportation of Belted Galloway

cattle to western states. My hope is

that farms and individuals who haul

cattle long distances will come forward, so that we can put

together a networking program to benefit new and existing

members in our western states. If you have thoughts or sug-

gestions on this please contact me at [email protected].
