Bump I t Thump I t September 20th, 2013

On what started as a very rainy day, AXiD sisters crossed their fingers that our annual volleyball competition would go on without a hitch. Thankfully for everyone involved, the sky cleared up just in time for competitions to begin! Theta Nu sisters coached nine fraternities in our annual Bump It Thump It tournament. Fraternities were so eager to participate that some signed up with multiple teams, totaling 11 teams on the rainy Friday afternoon. With more teams than usual, it made the day and the competition even more intense. Sisters had an amazing afternoon coaching and cheering on the different teams with posters, t-shirts and freezy pops. The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon, coached by sisters Josie McKinnon, Chiara Posati, Erin McGuiggan, Jenn Brouder and Maggie LaRonde beat Sigma Chi in the final competition to take home the win. At the end of the day, Bump It Thump It 2013 was a huge success and we raised $3,100 for Autism Speaks! A special thanks to all the Fraternities who participated and an extra shout-out to our Programs Vice President Allie Wheeler for putting together another successful year of Bump It Thump It!

The last weekend of September was not only Elon’s family weekend, but also our annual Xi Boutique! Xi Boutique has been wildly successful in the past and drew in even larger crowds at the Elon Community Church on September 27th. The event lasted from 2 pm to 6 pm with a steady line of young ladies trying on clothing from vendors throughout!

Special thanks to ABAN, Lilly Pulitzer, Frill, Hadley Emerson, Stella & Dot, All that Jas, Origami Owl Living Lockets and Vida pour Tea for participating in this event. These eight vendors set up eye-catching tables and booths to showcase their latest items for this fall season. Items ranged from trendy statement jewelry, clothing, candles, and home goods from businesses located right here in North Carolina. Not only does Xi Boutique help support local companies, but also more importantly a portion of the proceeds

acquired during this event will go to Autism Speaks. We cannot wait to bring even more vendors to this event next fall!

Xi Candyland was such a success. Our lovely VP of Programs, Allie Wheeler, set up various different types of candy for students and staff to create their own goody bag. Half of a bag was sold for $2 or a full bag for $5. Many people loved this idea and filled their bags with all the delicious treats. We also raised about $285 just off candy for Autism Speaks!

At Elon’s annual Organization Fair, a wonderful spot on Young Commons led a great deal of potential new women to come visit the AXiD table. Jessica Bova, Emily Schuett and executive board members greeted these new students as the faces of our organization, passing out autism fact sheets and fliers for upcoming AXiD

events. Our chapter hopes to recruit some amaxing new women in January to continue to grow our sisterhood. Special thanks to our Lilly-inspired trifold artist, Lizzy Lykens!

Kicking off Xi Week this year was a new tradition that AXiD hopes to continue for years to come. In the center of Young Commons outside of Moseley, a memorial tree was covered in blue ribbons to symbolize the effects autism has had on the Elon Community. A basket of ribbons invited any who passed by to tie their own ribbon to signify their tie to autism. It was a beautiful sight to see all the lives that have been touched by Autism here at Elon. Throughout the rest of the week AXiD hosted Xi Candyland, FreeXi Friday, and a profit share at Mellow Mushroom all to raise money for Autism Speaks. We also sold tickets for Xiti Dinner, which is planned for this Wednesday, Oct. 30th from 5-8pm at the Elon Community Church!

Mother’s Initiation On the Sunday of Elon’s Family Weekend,14 new members were initiated into the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta. These new members are the proud mothers of current AXiD sisters at Elon. The formal ceremony took place at 10am at the Alpha Xi Delta House in the Loy Center, Elon’s Greek Courts, where the initiates were fully welcomed into the chapter and learned the values and ideals in which their daughters hold dear to their hearts. After the ceremony, our new initiates went outside to take pictures with their daughters, and now sisters! They also took a “pledge class” picture on the steps of the AXiD house with their new sisters. They even threw their first the “Xi” hand symbol! It was truly a momentous occasion to celebrate and honor the special women in our sisters’ lives, and a great end to a wonderful Parent’s Weekend! -Alison Doherty
