Introducing BizLibrary

Greetings! We are very pleased to announce that Foundation is prepared to roll out its new training and development program designed mainly for its full-time employees fi lling supervisory and management roles.

We have contracted with BizLibrary—a top-rated and award-winning organization which provides a wide range of online business related training topics.

BizLibrary has over 3,000 courses available in nearly all business topics, and of key importance are courses in Communications, Team Building, Customer Service, Project Management, Strategic Planning, and Leadership—just to name a few.

While the courses offered through BizLibrary are the main source of content for our training and development

program, we also plan to have live presentations delivered periodically on Foundation-specifi c topics. Of course, one of the key advantages of using an online system is 24/7 availability of the course content.

At this point, please simply wait to receive the e-mail from Angelique, which will be sent out in the next several days. She will be sending specifi c information on how to access the courses within the Learning Management System from BizLibrary, along with identifying specifi c courses that Foundation will suggest our supervisors and managers to experience.

Again, we are very excited about the availability of this new training and development program, and more will follow in the coming days…

A Message from Chief Employment Offi cer Dennis Miller...

The 29th Annual Hot Dog Caper

Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. presented the 29th Annual Hot Dog Caper on Tuesday, September 25, 2012. This traditional celebration welcomed the campus community with free food, music, and entertainment.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., numerous volunteers wearing blue t-shirts helped distribute thousands of hot dogs, chips, soda, and ice cream bars to hungry staff and students. This trend continued until about 1:00 p.m.

Adorned in blue and white decorations, the entire University Park exuded a festive ambiance. Vendors with exciting giveaways, games hosted by ASI, two photo booths, and a live band called 90 Proof added to the celebratory atmosphere.

This was probably the largest Hot Dog Caper to date. With the help of over 300 volunteers, 15,216 hot dogs, 9,600 chips, over 20,000 Pepsi products, and nearly 11,000

ice cream bars were served. In addition, around 400 feet of banner, 250 balloons, 25 tents, 30 tables, and 50 trashcans were placed throughout the park.

This year’s Hot Dog Caper was made possible through the partnership of Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc., Cal Poly Pomona, Pepsi Beverages Company, Associated Students, Inc., Facilities Planning & Management, AT&T, Otterbox, Hoffy, Costco, First Class Vending, and Intercollegiate Athletics.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a grand success!

Change of Administrator for Flexible Spending Account

As you know, Foundation offers its employees a wide range of benefi t programs. One of those benefi t programs is the Flexible Spending Account “FSA” and this program is currently administered by AFLAC.

We recently received notice from AFLAC of their intent to discontinue providing this service and their plan to outsource all of their business related to the administration of FSA’s. That transition will be effective on October 1, 2012, and AFLAC has decided to discontinue directly providing FSA administration services on September 30, 2012.

As a current participant in the Foundation’s FSA program the decision by AFLAC will directly impact you.

In response to AFLAC’s decision to outsource their FSA administration, Foundation has reviewed their new program from their outsourcing partner and compared that program to what is readily available from HealthScope. You might recall that HealthScope is Foundation’s current health benefi ts administrator. Based on that review Foundation has determined the best option is to move the administration of the FSA program to HealthScope.

You will remain covered under the FSA program during the transition and the funds you have allocated to the FSA are safe and available to use. However, the transition of the FSA administration from AFLAC to

HealthScope will require planning on your part.

Several dates are important for you to consider regarding this transition. All expenses incurred up to and including September 30, 2012, will be processed by AFLAC. All expenses incurred on or after October 1, 2012, will be processed by HealthScope.

In order to facilitate the transition from AFLAC to HealthScope, , the following dates apply:

September 30, 2012 Last day to submit claims to AFLAC

September 24, 2012 Last day MasterCard issued by AFLAC can be used

October 30, 2012 Last day any check issued by AFLAC can be cashed

October 1, 2012Claims incurred on or after this date belong to HealthScope

October 8, 2012 HealthScope can accept claims on or after this date

Claims submitted to AFLAC between September 24, 2012, through September 30, 2012, will be received (via fax) and processed manually (check issued) by AFLAC. Claims submitted to AFLAC on or after October 1, 2012, will be returned to

sender. Please ensure any claims you incur on or before September 30, 2012, are submitted to AFLAC on or before September 30, 2012.

Both AFLAC and HealthScope will be sending out notices in the next few days describing the changes. Please ensure you review the material they send you.

HealthScope will mail out VISA cards around the 3rd week of September. HealthScope will process FSA claims using a VISA card similar to how the MasterCard is used with AFLAC. Using a VISA card for FSA purposes is extremely convenient and the preferred method for handling all FSA transactions. However, you may also use the reimbursement method and a Direct Deposit form is included in the email as an attachment. Please complete and submit the Direct Deposit form to HealthScope if you prefer this approach. A manual check is available for reimbursement of FSA funds, although it is the least desirable and the most expensive method to utilize. Unlike AFLAC, checks from HealthScope will be issued only once per week. As such, we strongly encourage employees to select the VISA Card or direct deposit method, or both, for their FSA transactions.

If you have any questions regarding this transition, please do not hesitate to contact either me or Nora Fernandez at 869-4378.

Bringing Sexy Backs cialageBy: Lily Ly & Darren Isomoto

We’ll admit it. This is probably the fi rst time we’ve really talked about Myspace in almost 10 years. It also makes us realize that the last time we thought Myspace was “cool” was back in grade school. Once Facebook and a dozen other major social networks came about, Myspace had merely become a memory of our teenage years.

However, the once dominating social network wouldn’t go down without a fi ght. Earlier this week, Myspace teased its second relaunch in a short preview video. The announcement was made by Justin Timberlake, who recently became one of Myspace’s chief investors. The preview video fl ashed images and clips of the revamped social network in what appears to be a drastic overhaul in design, purpose, and strategy.

...But what do we think of the new Myspace?

[THE GOOD] At fi rst glance, there’s no doubt that the new Myspace has a very attractive facelift. The sleek, hip, new design immerses the user in this visually active media landscape that offers tons of photos, videos, and music clips to experience. While it’s gorgeous on the outside, the new Myspace also has a strong backbone. With music icon and entertainment celebrity Justin Timberlake leading the relaunch on the forefront as one of the chief

investors, you have a renewed sense of faith that this is the relaunch the social network deserves. Finally, let’s face it: Facebook is the dominant social network. The best thing that any social network could do to gain traction and success is to work with Facebook and not against it. The new Myspace offers plenty of ways to relay statuses and postings with Facebook, Twitter, and many other sites. It’s this strategy that makes it a different social network and not a minuscule Facebook.

[THE BAD] On a personal note, the user interface resembles the same style as a social network we both dislike: Pinterest. We absolutely refuse to use Pinterest, so it’s going to take some really strong convincing to get us on there. Also, no matter how often you say the word “new,” the word, “Myspace” may do more harm than good. Let’s be honest, seeing the original Myspace crumble under the rise of Facebook meant more than one business being more successful than the other. To the users and general population, it meant that being on Facebook was cool and more popular while Myspace had become the abandoned amusement park of the internet. In fact, despite the intriguing images in their preview video, Justin Timberlake, and announcements to come down the road before relaunch, one might think that we’d be more excited if it wasn’t called, “New Myspace” but something that was actually new.

[THE UGLY] Again, is this Pinterest Part 2? Really?! We already dislike Pinterest; don’t be unfair to the new Myspace and give us a reason to dislike it before it even offi cially launches. Well, when we set aside our personal distaste, the real question everyone can ask themselves is, “Do we really need another social platform?” That all depends. The new Myspace seems to position itself as a hub for all of your media content. Currently, we have social sites that do this perfectly for us: Photos on Flickr, videos on YouTube, and music on Pandora. Each site does a service to each form of media very well, so it’s an uphill battle for the new Myspace to divert our attention and loyalty away from them.

Is this the relaunch that Myspace will make its big comeback on? Ultimately, even if the new Myspace manages to pull us in with all of the fl ashy new features, every social network’s longevity and success is extremely dependent on the users. We’re only going to join if our friends do and vice versa. We might not be excited about the new Myspace, but we are interested.

Only time will tell to see if Justin Timberlake can bring sexy back to this forgotten social network.

Campus Cafeteria Finds Green Alternative for Food Waste

At Los Olivos, trash isn’t simply trash. It falls into one of three categories: cardboard for recycling, miscellaneous trash, and now, food scraps. All food—fruit, vegetables, bread, meat, bones, and dairy—can be composted by the campus’ trash hauler, Burrtec. Kitchen scraps from preparation, leftovers from diners, and uneaten food are thrown into biodegradable trash bags and a separate outdoor bin. “We’re diverting about 10 yards of garbage a week from the landfi ll,” estimates Aaron Neilson, associate director of Foundation Dining Services. In an average week, Los Olivos produces about 20 to 22 yards of waste—that’s enough to fi ll about seven Volkswagen Beetles. Recyclables take about two cars and food waste takes up about three cars, leaving two cars-worth of miscellaneous trash that goes to the landfi ll. “When the composting program started [around] spring quarter, it took staff members extra time to separate food trimmings in the kitchen, as well as sort through leftover and uneaten food in the dish room. After a while, it became part of the routine,” says executive chef Arnold Zavalza. “At fi rst it was a little confusing and took a little more time, but I think it’s worthwhile when it’s such a noble cause,” Zavalza says. “The composting program has cut down from the actual waste, which will take up less area in the landfi ll.” At its facility in Fontana, Burrtec composts the food waste with green waste, producing nutrient-rich soil in about 45 days. The compost is sold to local farmers and residents. Kellogg West and The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch are expected to enroll in the same composting program this fall. Separating compostable waste isn’t Los Olivos’ fi rst pass at more sustainable operations. In 2008, it eliminated trays from the dining facility to save water, power, and wasted food, as well as to challenge students to avoid overeating. The trayless initiative was estimated to save about 10,000 gallons of water and 125 pounds of food a day.

Orchid Workshop

Foundation IT Manager Randy Townsend demonstrated his planting techniques to a group of curious Foundation employees on Thursday, September 6. Prior to his workshop, Randy walked through the building and casually invited anyone who may be interested in learning about orchids.

Around 12:30 p.m., a group of Foundation employees gathered in the patio area. Randy was equipped with several pots, bark, moss, gardening tools, and of course, orchids. He supplied his spectators with informational packets about orchids, and declared that these fl owers are “different from a traditional plant.” Randy began instructing the crowd on how to repot these unique fl owers.

Randy showed the group how to properly extract an orchid from its pot and remove potting media, bark and/or moss from its roots. Once the plant was free, he showed his audience how to clip dead roots, while

ensuring that the healthy ones remain attached. Next, Randy placed the plant into a new pot, noting that the soil should never be compacted.

“You want the aerial roots to be close to the top,” instructed Randy.

Randy invited group members to the table to try the techniques he had just demonstrated. General Business Manager Haleh Minakary and Accounts Specialist Evangelina Grajeda each attempted to remove an orchid from its original pot, release its roots, clip any decayed parts, and replant it in a new pot.

Randy continued to answer questions and offer advice throughout the session.

Since being repotted, the plants will eventually acclimate to their new homes and blossom into healthy, lovely orchids.

Randy Townsend demonstrated that with a little patience and knowledge, anyone can grow healthy, beautiful orchids…

The 7th Annual Matt’s Run takes place on Saturday, October 13, 2012. Matt’s Run honors Matthew Brent Myers, a Cal Poly Pomona student who lost his life in 2005 while walking across Kellogg Drive. Since the tragedy, Matt’s Run (a 5K run/walk around the Cal Poly Pomona campus) has taken place every year to unite the community and celebrate Matt’s life.

The organizers of Matt’s Run managed a booth at this year’s 29th Annual Hot Dog Caper. With a minimum donation of $1, students got the opportunity to spin a wheel that offered various prizes, including free registration for the run, Cal Poly Pomona products, and Matt’s Run items. Four lucky participants received free registration for the event.

In addition to the exciting giveaways, the Matt’s Run table also offered students pertinent information about the event. A route map was positioned near the table, so new and curious visitors can visualize the distance. For those with ardent spirit, the Matt’s Run booth also offered details about the Myers Cup—an award given to the party who showcases the most enthusiasm on the day of the event.

Matt’s Run staff also traversed the University Park during the Hot Dog Caper to distribute small business information cards with their website and additional information about the event. Approximately 700 cards were handed out.

“…it was lots of fun and we had great exposure at the Hot Dog Caper like we always do,” expressed Rachiel Lucero, Director of Events and Special Projects.
