Ask a Tech: What is the lowest temperature I can leave my house, when I leave for the winter?

With heating costs at the current levels, it is tempting to keep inching down that thermostat. Too often, we find out the hard way, how much keeping the temperatures low for utility savings can really cost.

In general, I do not recommend setting the heat below 50° for gas, oil, or electric heating units. For geothermal units, it is recommended not to

set the thermostat below 60°. There is the possibility with a setting below 50° of pipes freezing in windy conditions or quick freeze ups if the

power were to go out. Geothermals and heat pumps are not designed to work under 60° and can lock out on safety devices, leading to a possible freeze up.

While some owners choose to winterize their homes and turn off the utilities, although acceptable, it is not the best recommendation for the

structure and items in the house. However, should you choose to close down your home for winter, contact a professional to complete the draining/winterization of your homes pipes & fixtures. The optimum is

to maintain a year round controlled atmosphere. One of the often over looked victims of temperature swings, are the electronics located in your

home. Today’s electronics do not like the wider temperatures, and or humidity swings, and can affect their performance and life span.

At Kozon’s, we also recommend that you should have someone periodically check your home or have the property monitored by a

security company. Simple solutions range from a device called a Winter Watchman, which turns on a lamp when the house gets too cold-

alerting neighbors of a possible problem. Kozon Plumbing & Heating also offers a product called Water Cop, which is designed to shut off the water in the home when it detects water from broken pipes or leak. “A

Water Cop automatic water shut-off valve system will provide your home with round-the-clock indoor flood protection and works with wired and

wireless flood sensors, wall switches, and most home security and home automation systems.” Remember to also have a designated person authorized on your account to call for repairs locally, to be able to handle

emergencies on your behalf. –Mike Doub, Service Manager

South Bend. Working alongside sister & brother-in-law combo, Jess & Josh

Michael, allows Brandy to keep true to the family run and operated values that

Tips of the Trade

Draining your home for the winter or turning off the water to your home for another reason? Make sure to always shut down the water heater prior. Making sure your water heater is not running with a less than full

tank is critical. Under filled tanks can lead to burned out water heater elements and essentially “fry” your water heater.

When heat rises…push it down! “Since the warm air from your heater

rises to the ceiling, your heater must run more often for you to feel warm. By reversing the direction of your ceiling fan you pull cool air up from the floor; that cool air mixes with the hot air near the ceiling and

circulates down. This increases the efficiency of your heater, causes the room to be warmer and saves on your heating bill. Operating your fan in the reverse position in the winter causes the fan to blow away from

you, creating less draft. If you do not have a reverse switch on your fan you can turn it on in the low setting, while this is not as effective you will still gain some of the benefit of reduced heating costs.” (courtesy of ehow.com)

A bus driver was heading down a street in Colorado. He went

right past a stop sign without stopping, he turned left where

there was a "no left turn" sign and he went the wrong way on a

one-way street. Then he went on the left side of the road past a

cop car. Still - he didn't break any traffic laws. Why not?

Pumpkin Spice Roll (courtesy of allrecipes.com)

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

1 cup pumpkin puree

3 eggs

1 teaspoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup confectioners' sugar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch jelly roll

pan or cookie sheet. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, and

pumpkin pie spice. Stir in pumpkin puree, eggs, and lemon juice. Pour mixture into

prepared pan. Spread the mixture evenly. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 15

minutes. Lay a damp linen towel on the counter, sprinkle it with confectioner's sugar,

and turn the cake onto the towel. Carefully roll the towel up (lengthwise) with the cake in

it. Place the cake-in-towel on a cooling rack and let it cool for 20 minutes. Make the

icing: In a medium bowl, blend cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and sugar with a wooden

spoon or electric mixer. When the cake has cooled 20 minutes, unroll it and spread icing

onto it. Immediately re-roll (not in the towel this time), and wrap it with plastic wrap.

Keep the cake refrigerated or freeze it for up to 2 weeks in aluminum foil. Cut the cake in

slices just before serving.

Plug Into Innovation Cell phone cord, iPad cord, digital camera cord…oh

my! With an app for this and an app for that, today’s

family is practically connected to one electric device or

another at all times. Multiply that by several family

members and several devices later, and instantly your

countertop is cluttered with usb cords and their

specific recept adapters. Seeking a little more control

in the chaotic technology jungle, Pass & Seymour

have introduced a 2-Port/ Standard Receptacle

combination outlet. “The Pass & Seymour USB

Charger / Receptacle offers a clean uncluttered

solution to charging your favorite electronic devices.

Features two USB ports that charge USB 2.0 and 3.0

compatible electronics. Charges 3X faster than other

USB receptacles by providing a 2.1 amp charge.”

Available in white, ivory, black, light almond, and even

nickel these cool little guys can replace a normal outlet in no time at all.

Compatible with iPad, iPhone, iPod, Tablets, Cell Phones, Smartphones, Nintendo 3DS, Sony Playstation Vita, Digital Cameras, Kindle, and GPS units, there’s never a need for anymore wall adapters. Have a Kozon team member install one on your next service call and enjoy a life with fewer wires.
