LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

KEY CLUB

THE BEAVER TREE 03

HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUB, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

It’s October! Our biggest project this month is raising funds for the Eliminate Project through the

Trick-or-Treat for UNCIEF campaign. Pick up a box when you pay your dues in the SGO store from

October 15th through October 19th, excluding the 17th, or you can contact Treasurer Alex at

[email protected] for one if you haven’t already gotten a box. Many things happened this

month, including one of the most anticipated events: the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Walk. Read all about the fun our members had on pages 6-11.

What about next month? There are lots of Key Club activities coming up, namely Key Club Week

and the Fall Rally. If you don’t know what they both are already, learn more on pages 12 and 13. I

guarantee that you’ll have tons of fun if you participate! Lastly, the executive board is launching

the 2012-2013 club T-shirt design contest. Send in your design for a chance to get it printed on

dozens of T-shirts and for it to be sported around school and to events. This is your chance to make

sure we have an awesome T-shirt! Check out the requirements on page 14.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate seeing articles and pictures in my inboxes. Without your

contributions, The Beaver Tree can’t exist. I rely on you guys to supply the newsletter with images

and articles because this is YOUR Key Club experience and you should want to share it with every-

one else. Plus, I am always open to ideas about what to put in the newsletter. You can e-mail me

at [email protected] and send pictures to [email protected].

Thank you for reading!

Yours in the spirit of service,

OCTOBER 13, 2012

Did you know that over 398,000 Americans rely on a

dialysis machine to keep them alive or that over

92,000 are on the waiting list for a lifesaving kidney

transplant? The National Kidney Foundation, started

in 1950, has since become the leading organization

dedicated to fighting kidney disease. Diabetes and

high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney

disease. The statistic of being at risk is 1 in 3, and it is currently the 8th leading cause of

death in the United States. Many people don’t know they have it until it’s nearly too

late. Learn more about what you can do to help and how to check the health of your

own kidneys at http://kidney.org.

RUGGED RUN FOR RESPECT

On October 13th, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers gathered to help out with the Rugged Run for Re-

spect at the Aviator Sports and Events Center. It was an EXTREMELY chilly day and I could feel all

my fingers and toes go numb before the event even started, but I loved being there to support all

the runners :D! I found the run particularly interesting because I've never seen or heard of a run

with obstacles. I felt really bad for the runners actually because of all the mud and water they

had to go through to finish the race. My task was to cheer on the runners at one of the last obsta-

cles and they smiled at me as I told them "You're almost there!" After all the runners finished, the

event coordinators provided us with free lunch and T-shirts. I thought that the event was really fun

and I hope the runners got the respect they deserve!

— Sandy Mui

Rugged Run for Respect is a 5K out-and-back course on paved roads and dirt trails that includes

hills, water, a low crawl, and a five foot wall to scale, a mud pit, and much more. It is designed to

challenge athletes of every level with mud and obstacles: the very meaning of “getting down

and dirty.” Thousands were in attendance at the first annual Rugged Run for Respect event at

Aviators Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn. Proceeds benefit the 55,700 athletes of Special

Olympics New York. Athletes 16 and up can participate, so if you’re interested check back next

year! Find out more at http://ruggedrunforrespect.org/.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER

On October 21st, Brooklyn Tech Key Clubbers gathered in Central

Park to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Walk. Lots of people came out to participate in the five-mile walk

and it was great to see the flood of pink. When started walking,

we ended up straying away from the path and reached many

“dead-ends.” We jumped over obstacles in our way to get back

into the route of the walk. The best part of going to these big

events is meeting up with other Key Clubs from around the city. I

was reunited with some of my old friends from elementary school

who are now in Stuyvesant Key Club and it was great to see

them again (shout out to Bonnie Lee and District Governor Daniel

Lin)! When I finally finished the walk, I felt so accomplished even

though my legs felt numb. It was a great opportunity for exercise,

but it’s even better to be out there supporting a great cause!

— Sandy Mui

The American Cancer Society is the leading organization in the fight to end breast cancer,

the most common cancer among women in the United States other than skin cancer, and

is the second leading cause of cancer death. Currently there are 2.5 million breast cancer

survivors in the United States. Every walk is meant to honor survivors, raise awareness, and

raise money for research, information and services, and access to mammograms for

women who need them. By attending an event, your strides can help save lives. Learn

more about what The American Cancer Society is doing to eliminate breast cancer at

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP

As part of Assemblyman William Colton’s “Speak Up and Clean Up” campaign, volunteers

gathered to clean up 86th Street and Bensonhurst Park in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. Vol-

unteers were rewarded with free pizza and a special NYS Assembly certificate as well as ser-

vice hours. Check out the pictures from the event below and read what Key Clubbers had to

say about it on the next page!

OCTOBER 27, 2012

The Bensonhurst and Bath Beach Clean-up attracted many peo-

ple from several high schools, but Brooklyn Tech definitely had the

hugest turnout. This clean-up was different: volunteers weren’t

only cleaning up the streets to maintain a clean neighborhood

but to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. We were in charge of clean-

ing up Bath Avenue from Bay 14th to Bay 25th, but surprisingly

there was little garbage and litter on the ground. We mainly

raked leaves and made sure that the street drainage grates were

unclogged. By doing so, we would lessen the chance of flooding

following the arrival of the hurricane. We were potentially saving

lives and property this way. Along our route, we encountered a

middle-aged man who was clearing the sidewalk with a leaf

blower and were quick to offer him some help. At the end, the

block was almost completely clean. The man was very grateful

and thanked us. It felt very good to help someone out and clean

up our community at the same time. Many people who walked

past us on the street praised us for our efforts. An elderly woman

came up to a Key Clubber and actually said, "If I see William

Colton, I will tell him what a great job you kids are doing to clean

up the neighborhood!"

— Olivia Chen

William Colton's "Speak Up and Clean Up" campaign has really gone far since it first started last

summer. This focus for this clean-up was preparing for Hurricane Sandy by cleaning up the streets

and drains. Brooklyn Tech Key Club cleaned up areas from between Cropsey Avenue & 20th Ave-

nue to Cropsey Avenue & Bay 14th Street. We picked up mostly leaves, probably because it was

particularly windy that day. Although quite breezy, the weather was just right to be out and clean-

ing the streets! On the way back to the meet-up location, we bumped into a man who was clean-

ing his front yard using a leaf-blower and we offered to help him clean up. He was really grateful,

and it made me feel good to be able to provide aid. Sadly Hurricane Sandy wound up doing more

damage than expected, and I’m still praying for everyone out there.

T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST

Every year the executive board launches a contest to encourage our most creative, artistic, and

imaginative members to design a shirt that represents Brooklyn Tech Key Club. Will you be one of

them? It’s a great honor to be able to say you created a T-shirt that dozens of kids wear to school

or to events. This year, we’re looking to get our club T-shirts much earlier, and we’re hoping to get

a record number of designs sent in. Didn’t really like the designs in the past years? Well, this is your

opportunity to submit your idea!

Members who submit designs will receive +5 points per entry (max +10pts) and the contest winner

will receive +10 points and a free t-shirt! Send all scanned or screenshot submissions to Webmaster Tina at [email protected]. Paper submissions can be placed in Webmaster Tina’s mailbox in

7C1.

Deadline: Friday, November 30, 2012

Shirt Requirements: 1. There can only be a maximum of 3 colors excluding the shirt color.

2. The T-shirt must include the words “Brooklyn Tech” and “Key Club.”

3. There should not be any designs on the sleeve. You may have designs on

both the front and back of the shirt (it’s encouraged!)

4. You must either have a beaver and/or a key.

5. Core values (leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness)

and/or the motto “caring-our way of life” is optional.

6. Think before you submit. A haphazard design with little thought will NOT

receive points. Profanity will not be accepted.

The winning design for last year’s T-shirt!

What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month?”

Each month, we award a specific Key Clubber(s) who has made the most

impact on our club for that month. To receive this award, a Key Clubber

must not only attend most events that month but must also actively partici-

pate and contribute to Key Club and their community. We want a Key

Clubber(s) who is fit to represent Brooklyn Tech and serve as a role model to

others. For the month of October, this honor goes to …..
