From the Chairman...Ladies and Gentlemen!

I am delighted to welcome you to this evening’s performance of 'Gypsy'. This has always been a

favourite show of mine. It has such a wonderful score and I am sure that those of you who are not so

familiar with the show will recognise many songs this evening. I am often in the limelight at Thespians and

it has made quite a change for me to play a supporting role to my wife who takes on her first major role

as Mama Rose in this production – and what a role! Mama Rose is at the heart of our story. She appears

to be the archetypal, pushy stage-mother. But by the end of the evening we understand that she is only

trying to achieve things for her daughters that she never had the opportunity to do herself. This is the first

show with Thespians for our Musical Director, Julie Davies, but I am sure it will not be her last with us. In fact I

know it won’t be because we’ve already asked her to come back next year! The production has been in the

very capable hands of Jim Snell who has been ably supported by choreographer Sarah Bailes. We hope you

enjoy this evening’s show and look forward to seeing you at future Thespians shows and concerts.

Determined to make her young and beautifuldaughter June a vaudeville headliner, willful, resourceful, domineering stage mother RoseHovick will stop at nothing to achieve her goal. Shedrags the girl and her shy, awkward, and decidedlyless-talented older sister Louise around the countryin an effort to get them noticed, and with the assistance of agent Herbie Sommers, she managesto secure them bookings on the prestigiousOrpheum Circuit.Years pass, and the girls no longer are youngenough to pull off the childlike personae theirmother insists they continue to project. June rebelsand elopes with Tulsa, one of the dancers whobacks the act. Devastated by what she considersan act of betrayal, Rose pours all her energies intomaking a success of Louise, despite the youngwoman's obvious lack of singing and dancing skills. Not helping matters is the increasing popularity ofsound films, which leads to a decline in the

demand for stage entertainment. With bookingsscarce, mother and daughter find themselves inWichita, Kansas, where the owner of a third-rateburlesque house offers Louise a job. When one of the strippers is arrested for shoplifting,Louise unwillingly becomes her replacement. Atfirst her voice is shaky and her moves tentative atbest, but as audiences respond to her she beginsto gain confidence in herself. She blossoms as anentertainer billed as Gypsy Rose Lee, and eventuallyreaches a point where she tires of her mother'sconstant interference in both her life and wildlysuccessful career. Louise confronts Rose anddemands she leave her alone. Finally aware shehas spent her life enslaved by a desperate need tobe noticed, an angry, bitter, and bewildered Rosestumbles onto the empty stage of the desertedtheatre and experiences a moment of truth thatleads to an emotional breakdown followed by areconciliation with Louise.

Gypsy is a 1962 American musical film produced anddirected by Mervyn LeRoy. The screenplay by LeonardSpigelgass is based on the book of the 1959 stagemusical ‘Gypsy: A Musical Fable’ by ArthurLaurents, which was adapted from ‘Gypsy: A Memoir’ by Gypsy Rose Lee. StephenSondheim wrote the lyrics for songs composed by Jule Styne. The film wasremade for television in 1993.The Broadway production of Gypsy hadbeen a triumph for Ethel Merman for whosevoice its songs were specifically written byStephen Sondheim and Jule Styne. Merman, like most Broadway performers who create a role, believed she owned the part of Madam Rose.Although Mervyn LeRoy reportedly saw her in theshow numerous times, it was never likely that shewould recreate the role on film, given her lacklustertrack record as a movie draw (Call Me Madam andThere's No Business Like Show Business).

At approximately the same time, Rosalind Russell andher husband, theatre producer Frederick Brisson, werehoping to do a straight dramatic version of the story

based directly on the memoir by Gypsy RoseLee, but the book was irrevocably tied up inthe rights to the play. Her own gravelly singing voice was artfullyblended with that of contralto Lisa Kirk.Kirk's ability to mimic Russell's voice isshowcased in the final number ‘Rose's

Turn’, which is a clever blend of both of theirvoices. Kirk's full vocal version was released

on the original soundtrack, although it is not the version used in the finished film. In later years,Russell's original tryout vocals were rediscovered onscratchy acetate discs and included as bonus trackson the CD reissue of the film's soundtrack.Marni Nixon had dubbed Natalie Wood's singing voicein West Side Story the previous year, but Wood did herown singing in Gypsy.

Alex is thrilled to be playing such a strong musical theatre character as Mama Rose, but is nervous as this role is a departure from her normal ‘comedy/tart minor cameo principal’ roles.Alex has been an active member of Hitchin Thespians for over twentyyears, both off stage (as Secretary and Production Manager) and on. Herfavourite roles with Thespians have been Mrs. Mullins in ‘Carousel’ andEulalie Shinn in ‘The Music Man’. She has recently had the opportunity toperform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as part of a highly acclaimed ‘ByInvitation’ production of ‘Nine’, where she played the part of ‘Saraghina ‘- yes,you guessed it… another tart!!By day, Alex is a Headteacher at Pixmore JM School and by night tries to be a wife to Tom and mother to Isaac (who is also in this production) andRuben. She would like to thank ‘the boys’ for putting up with her incessantsinging and reciting of lines over the last few months and promises Rubenhe can change the CD in the car …after Saturday night!
